And good morning, Roger, WB7VZL. How are you and Daylene doing? How did the memorial service go yesterday?

Well, actually, she was the service speaker. She talked about the fascinating history of Guam, where we were when my wife was pregnant with our daughter. and the spiritual parallels of that, of thinking that the enemy was still at war with you and didn't realize that the surrender had already happened.

He couldn't imagine that his Emperor would surrender. So it was just against all paradigms in his thought-thinking process. So anyway, yeah, his name was Yokoi.

Yokoi, he was famous in Guam, I think was the last Japanese soldier to find out that the war had ended. So I guess that's the Gospel Commission, isn't it, Max? Over.

Yeah, amen. It's time for us to surrender to the Lord Jesus Christ. He's defeated Satan, and we need to give up the fight against Christ, and we need to yield ourselves to him.

All right, Roger, thank you for that. I'm glad the service went well and the message was communicated. and we appreciate you being here.

All right, WB7MAX, looking for check-ins in West Coast. Oh, there's Peter, KJ7BA. Good morning, Peter.

What we want to do now is we want to open in prayer. And so, Ed, in 6XOH, if you could open in prayer for us this morning, that would be great. Go ahead, Ed.

All right, let us pray. Dear Heavenly Father, we just come to you this morning. We ask that you bless our Bible study this morning here.

And we just ask, Lord, that you touch each heart here that's listening today, that we can learn more about you. Watch over each and every one of us, Lord. Amen.

You know all our needs and all the things that we, you know, the special prayers that we ask for each day. We just ask, Lord, that you continue to bless us and answer these prayers. Watch over Pastor Max as he's leading out today.

Just ask that you give him travel and mercy as he's making his way back home. Just ask, Lord, that you guide and protect him and just put a special blessing on him today. Watch over us each, Lord.

Most of all, help us all to be ready when you come to take us home. I pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

Amen. Thank you for that prayer, Ed. Really appreciate that.

Thanks for leading us to the throne of grace. All right, we are in Psalm 86 today, and before Will reads to us, I want to give us a little background on this psalm. Psalm 86 contains some of the most precious promises of God that are known to the Christians.

In this psalm, David reveals the depth of his understanding of the greatness of God. of the goodness of God, of the forgiveness of God, of the grace of God, of the patience of God, of the mercy of God, and of the power of God. Needless to say, this psalm is all about God and all the wonderful attributes that God has that he employs for our benefit and for our blessing and in the way in which he deals with us.

You know, it's a wonderful thing that we have a God who is great and good and forgiving and understanding and gracious and patient and merciful and powerful. And so this psalm has brought a great deal of comfort to troubled souls who are burdened with sin and with guilt. and/or who struggle under difficulties and dangers.

And the comfort that these promises in this psalm bring is due to what they reveal to us about the nature of God. The degree of comfort we have is in direct proportion to the nature of the God that we serve. And so it is who God is and not who we are.

It's what God has done, not what we have achieved, that brings us comfort and peace in the midst of the guilt and the turmoil and the difficulties that we face in our circumstances in life. So as we think about God... and for who he actually is, we realize there's no need for anxiety and worry and fear about our circumstances and about our future.

There's a passage in Daniel that says the people that do know their God, shall be strong and do exploit. And so the more we know about God, the more all of our problems are put into perspective and handled with peace. So we need to be people who think much on God and think little.

about our problems. And it's interesting in this psalm, David only mentions his problem in one verse in this psalm. All the rest of the psalm is focused on God, and that's how it should be.

And so let us think much on God and little on our problems And that's the pathway to peace. So that's a little introduction on Psalm 86. Will, KB5 Foxtrot, if you could read for us Psalm 86, I'd appreciate that.

Go ahead there, Will. KM5F, I'll be reading it in the NASB 95. And a couple of verses I will also add to EOS.

NLT for that verse. Verse 1, "A prayer of David: Incline your ear, O Lord, and answer me, for I am afflicted and needy." NLT verse 1, "Bend down, O Lord, and hear my prayer. Answer me, for I need your help." NST 95 verse 2, "Preserve my soul, for I am a godly man, O Lord my God, Savior, servant who trusts in you.

Be gracious to me, O Lord, for you For to you I cry all day long. May glad the soul of your servant. For to you, Lord, I lift up my soul.

For you, Lord, are good and ready to forgive and abundant in love and kindness to all. who call upon you. Verse 6, give ear, O Lord, to my prayer and give heed to the voice of my supplications.

Verse 6 in NLT, listen closely to my prayer, O Lord, hear my urgent cry. Verse 7 in NESB, in the day of my trouble, I shall call upon you. Verse 7, in the day You will answer me.

There is no one like you among the gods, O Lord, nor are there any works like yours. All nations whom you have made shall come and worship before you, O Lord, and they shall glorify your name. Verse 10: For you are great and do wondrous deeds.

You alone are God. Teach me your ways, O Lord. I will walk in your truth.

Unite my heart to hear your name. I will give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with all my heart and will glorify your name forever. For your loving kindness toward me is great, and you have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.

O God, arrogant men have raised up against me, and violent men have sought my life, and they have not set you before them. But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness and truth. Verse 16: Turn to me and be gracious to me.

O grant your strength to your servant and save the son of your handmaid. Show me a sign for good. that those who hate me may see it and be ashamed because of you, O Lord, have helped me and comforted me.

That prayer exists to the end of Psalm 86. KM5F. Well, thank you for that reading.

Appreciate that. All right. Any comments on Psalm 86?

Please come now to your call sign. KM5F, comment. Now, KM5F, call me.

Go ahead, please. Yeah, this is kind of a rare occasion in this psalm where, well, this is actually David. He's actually asking God to listen to him twice in the psalm.

Most of the time when that happens, it's just one verse, and it's usually a verse down in the middle of the psalm or the book or whatever chapter it is in. When we were back in the Psalms 71, 77, those, they also had calls for God to listen. The verse in Psalm 85, get right here in a second in Psalm 84-8 Korah also cried out to God as you mentioned about Daniel earlier three times actually six times in Psalm or in Daniel 9 17-19 he cried out for God to listen to hear KM5F Yeah, well, thanks for that observation.

Yeah, in verse 1 of Psalm 86, And then in verse 6 of Psalm 86, Yeah. and attend to the voice of my supplication. And what Will is pointing out here is that in numerous passages where we have prayers in the Scripture, we have the one who is offering the prayer, asking God to listen to the prayer, before he expresses the prayer.

So he starts out by saying, Lord, bow down your ear, listen to my prayer, let your ear be open to my cry, and then after that he expresses his prayer request. So, Will, appreciate you pointing that out. I think what this is is it's an expression of humility.

It's a recognition that God doesn't have to listen to our prayers. He's not under any obligation to us to respond. I mean, from time to time people will ask you to do things, and it's like, no, I'm not doing that, right?

Because we don't have any obligation to answer their request or to fulfill it. Maybe the request is entirely inappropriate, but you know the one who's doing the praying is at the mercy of the one being prayed to and I think that these expressions will are a clear declaration that God doesn't owe us anything and God doesn't have to listen to us and so we take the position of humility and We take the position of meekness. We take the position not of someone who is demanding, but someone who is suppliant and is on his knees and saying, "Oh Lord, please condescend to hear the prayer that I have to offer." So what we have here is an expression of humility.

and a recognition that God owes us nothing and we are at his mercy. Will, thank you for pointing that out. All right, WB7MX, any other comments, please?

Okay, I'm glad to answer. Good job, Will. Yeah, as you said, this one is where he's asking out of humility.

But several of the other ones that I read and looked up, it seemed that they were asking him to listen out of frustration with God. Can you imply that? Okay, thank you for that, Will.

Appreciate that. Okay, I think somebody else had a comment in there. Other station, come forward.

WB7VZL. Roger, WB7VZL, go ahead. Yes, I noticed that David quotes Exodus 34.6.

That is God's, in fact, I think that's the first time God uses his favorite phrases, his favorite description of who he is in respect to who we are. And so he quotes this. in the psalm.

And these are wonderful moments when we see the older passages of Moses inserted into David's prayer. and describing the character of God. And thank you for that intro very much, Max, for pointing out that this is about God.

This is about God and how appropriate God uses His favorite way of describing His character to us in that very wonderful passage that we have before us. and especially verse 15, that's the one I'm focusing it on. And then the reluctant prophet is frustrated by this character.

He's totally frustrated, and he's also in prayer. He's also in prayer, and you'll find this in Jonah chapter 4. And I'd like to read this here for the setting.

But it greatly displeased Jonah, and he became angry. And he prayed. He's praying to the Lord and said, "Please, Lord, was not this what I said while I was still in my own country?

Therefore, in order to forestall this, I fled to Tarshish, for I knew that thou art a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and one who even relents concerning calamity. I'll tell you, he didn't like the God that loved his enemies, Max. Back to you.

Yeah, Roger, great comment. Thank you for pointing that out. You know, what Roger's talking about here in Psalm 86 and in verse 5, this is a quote of Exodus 34.6.

So notice Psalm 86, verse 5. For thou, Lord, art good and ready to forgive, and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee. Then notice verse 15.

But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and in truth. And of course, that's also very parallel to Exodus 34 and verse 6. And then Roger pointed out very similar phraseology in the book of Jonah.

And so this is a wonderful way to pray. And that is take God's... and God's promises and God's revelations in his word and then plead them before the throne of grace.

There's nothing that God likes to hear more than his own word. and his own promises. And so when you have a need, grab a promise in the word of God and use that and plead that before the Lord.

For example, let's say that you need a job. And so you're praying, Lord, I need a job. You have said in your word that you will supply all of my needs according to your riches in Christ Jesus.

And so, Lord, fulfill that promise in meeting my need for employment so I can feed my family. And so that's just a little example of what David is doing here. and that is that he is pleading the promise of God, the character of God, the self-revelation of God that's contained in a previous book of the Bible, namely the book of Exodus, and even Jonah, as Roger's pointing out, and then using that as the foundation for the request that we make.

So what an effectual way to pray is to use the word of God itself to form the foundation for the request that we're making to God. And yeah, Roger, Jonah didn't like the God that showed mercy to his enemies. That's kind of sad, actually.

Jonah didn't have the greatest character in the world. And it's amazing how God used him. the reluctant prophet, and even the prophet without compassion, to accomplish his work.

So, to God be the glory. It certainly doesn't go to his instruments. Roger, back to you there, brother.

Yeah, well, I've probably taken up enough time at this moment. But it's just one of those bright spots in Jonah after he's kind of depressed, obviously, that he's depressed about the plant that was shading him, and now he's getting sunburned. that he prays for us and he reminds God, as you so beautifully put it, of his character and quoting the words from Moses that God quoted to Moses.

So anyway, I just... It was refreshed to see 86. And thank you for reminding me that verse 5 had a segment of that as well.

Appreciate that. Over. All right.

Real good, Roger. And now we'd like to acknowledge Dave, KT7WKI. Dave, see you there on the Utah FDR.

And I would also like to acknowledge Joe, KD7WBV up there in Battleground, Washington. Good morning, Joe. Good to have you with us.

See you there on the Utah FTR as well. All right. Any other comments on our song, please come now to your call center.

Bye, Yankee. 580, please go ahead. Yeah, I'm reading this, and I feel like David thinks that God's not listening to him.

And the reason why I say that is in verse 1, Now down your ear, O Lord, and hear me. And then in verse 6, it says, give ear, O Lord, to my prayer. And then in verse, bear with me for a second, 16.

Oh, turn to me. 5 Yankee, back to Ned. Yeah, you know, it's not that David thinks God isn't listening to him.

It's that David is taking a position of intense pleading and of personal humility and of really a situation where he's completely desperate. You know, if God doesn't help him, he's done. If God doesn't answer his prayer...

It's over. And the reason why, of course, is because his enemies, notice verse 17, "...show me a token for good, that they which hate me may see it and be ashamed, because thou, Lord, hast helped me." and comforted me. So he's got some people that are hating him, and apparently they intend a tremendous malevolence toward him.

We don't know for sure when this was written, but he may have been hiding from Saul at this point in time, perhaps surrounded by Saul. I don't know, but we know that David had many desperate situations in his life. when his life was just hanging by a thread, and if God didn't intervene, he was going to be killed.

So I think what we see here is intensity. I think we see humility, and I think we see the recognition that God is his only hope, and that's the reason for the repetition. You know, Beck, if we listen to our own prayers...

or the prayers of those around us, very oftentimes we hear repetition in prayers. And we see even the Lord Jesus doing this in the Garden of Gethsemane, right? It says three times he prayed the same prayer.

Lord, if it be thy will, let this cut pass from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but thine be done. And we're told specifically in the Gospel that he prayed those same words three times.

So I think repetition is a sign of humility. It's a sign of intensity. It's a sign that we have no other hope at all except the God to whom we're praying.

All right, back to you there, Beck. Go ahead. Okay, thank you for the in-depth answer and understanding.

I appreciate it. I'll pass the five Yankee back to them. All right, real good.

Okay, any other comments on our song? Please come now. Roger, WB7VZL, please go ahead.

Yeah, Max, I'm so glad that you mentioned Gethsemane. I think of the temptations of Christ. And when we think of David as...

Well, think of Christ as the son of David. And basically, David is experiencing a similar crucifixion. He went through...

His old nature was being crushed... in contrast to Christ but he still went out into the wilderness where Satan Satan was there trying to do everything possible to crush David and to kill him because he was the representative of Genesis 3.15 the seed he was the seed bearer and it was nothing that Satan would have loved to do than to get rid of David. WB7 VZL.

Yeah, Roger, thanks for drawing the parallel. That is interesting. I never thought of that before.

Now, Roger's referring to the fact that Jesus, in Matthew chapter 4, remember right after his baptism, he goes out in the wilderness, right? He's out there for 40 days and 40 nights, and he's fasting and he's praying and you remember Satan shows up and does his best to tempt him to fall into sin and thereby destroy him. Well, David was having to run around out in the wilderness fleeing from Saul, who is, of course, a picture of Satan.

And just like Saul tried to destroy David in the wilderness, Satan tried to destroy Jesus in the wilderness because, of course, David was the foreshadowing of Jesus in many respects in his life. Not in every respect, but in many respects. And so, yeah, that's an interesting parallel.

Roger, thank you for pointing that out. All right, any other comments on Psalm 86? Please come now.

All right, while you're thinking, I just want to make a comment on verse 2, okay? So verse 1, Verse 2, Verse 3, O thou my God, save thy servant who trusts in thee. Now, when he says here that he is holy, he's not saying he's sinless, okay?

The word holy means to be set apart. And what David is saying here is, Lord, I have been set apart to you for your service. Lord, I'm one of your saints.

I belong to you. And so when he says I'm holy, he's just saying I'm yours. I belong to you.

I've been set apart from the world. And I've been set apart for your kingdom and your service as your child. So he's not saying, God, answer my prayer because I'm a super sinless person.

He's saying, Lord, answer my prayer because I belong to you. So just wanted to clear up any misconceptions that may have been there about that phrase. All right, other comments on our text.

Please come down to the call sign. All right. I'm curious as to whether we have any centers on this net.

Your net control is certainly a sinner. And I probably wore out verse 5, using it so many times before the Lord. Verse 5, for thou, Lord, are good and ready to forgive.

and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee. And, of course, verse 15, But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion and gracious, longsuffering and plenteous in mercy and in truth. And, you know, those two passages are a huge comfort as you struggle against sin and you think, you know, God must be really mad at me and he must be tired of me coming again and again and again with the same sin, asking forgiveness for the 400th time.

over the decades because of what I'm struggling with and my besetting sin. And the good news is that my sin is great, but God's compassion and mercy and forgiveness is greater. And while my sin is finite, His atoning sacrifice on the cross is infinite.

And so, what a wonderful verse to memorize. and to use in your prayers. Verse 5, So this is the God that you're coming to when you pray.

This is the God you're bringing your sins to. And this is the God that we're dealing with. And so don't ever be afraid to come to God.

with your sins because the Bible tells us that he's plenteous in mercy to all them that call upon him. So take comfort for verse 5 as you struggle with your sanctification and your walk just like I do. All right, any other comments?

Please come down. KD-7. AK-6, OK.

All right, we have a double there. We had Eric, 8070F. Eric, you go first, and then Jeff, AK6OK will pick you up.

Eric, please go ahead. Yeah, you were just talking about verse 5 and I was thinking of 1 John 1:9. "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness." And so I was thinking of that one.

That's what I have memorized and it's a go-to for me, for sure. I just wanted to throw that out there. Back to you, Max, KD70S.

Yeah, Eric, KD70S, well said. That goes right along with this verse. 1 John 1.9, if we confess our sins, he's faithful and just to forgive us our sins.

and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. You know, another one I really like a lot, Eric, is Romans 521, where sin abounds, grace is much more abound. And what a wonderful promise that is as well.

Okay, we're back over to Jeff AK6, okay? Jeff, please go ahead with your comments. Okay, Max.

Thanks so much. I finally woke up after drinking a cup of coffee and a half here. A couple things.

Some themes here. And I've looked this up. This is not my brilliance.

But. David begins by calling himself poor and needy, and we're all this way. And this doesn't mean lack of money.

It's recognizing that you can't save yourself, and you're completely dependent on God. And... he also recognizes he focuses on who God is describes God is good forgiving and full of love and mercy of course and David asked God to teach him truth and give him undivided undivided heart give him an undivided heart which means he wants his whole life focus in worship to be in God's ways.

And then he ends this with a look forward for a time when all nations will come and worship God because he alone is supreme. But one thing that caught my eye here that is interesting is, You can read this psalm when you feel sacred, weak, or overwhelmed by life. And it teaches that you don't need fancy words to pray.

I have thought with this for my entire life. There are people like you, Max, there's many others who just have this. I'm not eloquent in my speech.

And we don't need to be worried about that. I can share that Patty laid me with a couple things that have happened to her, from pneumonia to sepsis that she's had in the last year. and then this thing with her arm, you know, her wrist being broken.

She's asked many times, asked me, why did God allow this? Very, very frustrated. Not that she's willing to walk away from God at all.

My wife has been a believer since she was born, she tells me. But she asked this question repeatedly. And sometimes we don't even know how to pray.

Sometimes it's just flat impossible. Not that you're not recognizing God, but what words do you say that are appropriate? And it's great to understand you don't need fancy words.

Even your utterances are acceptable, over. Yeah, well said, Jeff. You know, it's not the eloquence of the language.

It's the attitude of the heart, you know, that God hears. And, you know, I think of Peter, right? He gets out of the boat to walk on the water, and he starts to think.

And he says, Lord, save me. Like, how eloquent is that? And Jesus immediately reaches out his hand and grabs him right, gets him back in the boat.

And, you know, the Bible talks about praying with groanings which cannot be uttered there in Romans chapter 8. And sometimes, you know, we don't even have words. We just are before the Lord and, you know, we're just...

almost speechless with the agony that we're having regarding the situation that we're in but God hears our heart and he knows our heart whether we articulate what's in our heart perfectly with our mouth or not isn't the issue. You know, the issue is, are we looking to God for help and how can we express that need? You know, the selfless prayer, 7th phase, is so much more effectual than the most eloquent prayer said with a cold form of heart.

And so, you know, it's really important that we not compare ourselves among ourselves and say, "Oh, I'm not as articulate as that guy, and so therefore, you know, my prayers aren't as valuable as his." God isn't looking for how articulate we are, He's looking for how sincere we are. And so we worship the Lord in spirit and in truth, that is, with the truth of His Word, and with the engagement of our heart. And so the other thing, Jeff, is I find myself speechless at times in my prayers.

So I'll just grab a psalm like this one, and I'll make that my prayer. And I'll say, bow down thine ear, O Lord, hear me. That is Max.

I, Max, am poor and needy. Lord, preserve my soul, et cetera. And so, you know, as far as the question of why, you know, We very seldom have an answer to the question of why.

What we do have is an answer to the question of who. Like, who is doing this? Who is this person that allowed me to experience this terrible situation in my life?

Well, that person is God, right? We know He's sovereign, He works all things after the counsel of His own will. And so I don't need an answer to the question, "Why is God doing this?" What I need to think about is, "Who did it?" And, "Who is this person?" Well, the person who did it is good, The person who did it is ready to forgive.

The person who did it is plenteous in mercy. This person is someone who is gracious and kind and compassionate. And so if he saw fit to do it or allow it to come to pass in my life, as the case may be, then I can trust him even when I don't understand it.

And so, you know, there's the who. And then there's the what. What am I supposed to do?

in relationship to this. Well, I'm supposed to just keep trusting him, keep serving him, keep sharing his gospel, keep reading his word, keep going to church, keep praying. So instead of asking why God allowed this, ask who allowed it, number one, and number two, what am I supposed to do in light of the fact that this God allowed this thing, or caused it, as the case may be, to come to pass in my life?

And so the answer to the who and the what is really clear, even though we don't have a clue as to the why. So that's how I manage it. I learned to quit asking why a long time ago unless it's really obvious.

I mean, if I stick my finger in an electric socket and get shocked, yes, I know the why of why I got shocked, right? But most of the time, we don't really know why. But we do know who did it, and we can trust him, and we know what we're supposed to do in response.

and that is continued exercise faith. Jeff, AK6OK, back to you. Yeah, thank you, Max.

You know, it's a great thing to use a psalm like this to pray. You're absolutely right. Put your name in place of David's.

I think that's a tremendous idea. Sometimes when we are in the middle of a major problem in our life, we can't come up with the words. It just doesn't come out.

So great to go to the psalms and pick the one that applies and use it. Dover. Yeah, well said there, and I appreciate that.

The words of God can be our words in our prayers. You know, there are some printed prayers out there. Some of them are quite good.

I have a book of Puritan prayers called The Valley of Vision. And sometimes when I don't know how to pray, I'll grab one of those prayers and make that prayer my prayer. Sometimes, you know, we're able to pray really well.

Other times we're not. But we can always pray by using the words of God or perhaps the words of others that go to our biblical prayers and use those. All right, WB7MAX here.

The net would like to acknowledge Phil Kasich HSV. Good morning, Phil. Good to have you with us there on the SDR.

Alright, we've got Phil checked in, K6HSV. Alright, any other comments on our passage, please come back to call. KM5S, we use it, Al.

Foxtrot. Alright, we had a double there. First we'll go with Will, and then we'll go with Roger.

Will, KM5S, please go ahead first. Yeah, in Acts 13.22, it says, I found David, the son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, which shall fulfill all my wills. David not only prayed from the heart, but he prayed in God's will.

And he also said in Psalm 5110, create in me a clean heart. So he asked with a clean heart when he prayed as well as being in God's will. I can't even find this.

Yeah, and I think that's important. I mean, you know, if we ask God to help us rob a bank, you know, God's not going to answer that prayer. It's not according to God's will, right?

And so that's one of the reasons why we need to according to the Scripture, according to the promises, according to the self-revelation of God, like we find in this passage, because then we are praying in the will of God. And it says we ask anything according to His will. We know He hears us.

And if he hears us, we have the petition that we ask of him. Now, a lot of times we don't know what the will of God is in terms of unfolding providence. For example, we pray for God to heal someone with cancer.

And sometimes God heals them, and sometimes he doesn't. Okay? And so however providence unfolds reveals to us what the will of God was in that circumstance.

But in many situations, we know exactly what the will of God is because he's declared in his word what it is. And so we can pray according to that. And then the other thing is that oftentimes God does answer our prayers, just not in a way we expect it or in a time that we expect it.

So yes, well, to be someone who is after God's heart and someone who prays according to the will of God, makes those prayers not only pleasing to God, but also prayers that he grants to us in his way and in his time. All right, over to Roger, WB7BZL. Roger, please go ahead.

Well, this discussion on our hearts is certainly a good way to wrap up our Bible study, and that's what I was going to underline it. in the NASV, it says in verse 11, Unite my heart to fear thy name. And then the verse following is also, With all my heart.

So our emphasis on heart for the last few minutes have been certainly appropriate. Back to you, Matthew. Yeah, Roger, WB70ZL, thank you for that.

Well said. Prayer comes to the heart. Well, we have the Vintage Military Radio Network following us at 6.50, so we need to go ahead and pray.
