Let us bow in prayer. Lord, to share in fellowship together. Lord, we thank you so very much for this wonderful psalm that we are reading about the deliverance of David.

And Lord, it reminds us so deeply of... the great deliverance from our enemies that you provide for us, especially the most important great deliverance from the great enemy. Father, we thank you for the wonderful soaring worship of this psalm.

And Lord, we also pray for Roger as he oversees the service today, where you're... glory, your deliverance is celebrated. Father, we just ask that you be to each and every one here today in their particular needs.

Lord, we also would ask that you would move us to walk closer to you and be mindful of the needs of others. Jesus, we thank you for all you do, for your most blessed grace. In Jesus' name we pray.

Thank you so much for that prayer. Much appreciated. All right, we are in Psalm 57, Psalm 5-7.

And this psalm is very similar to Psalm 56, which we looked at yesterday. You know, it's quite amazing to note how often... the people of God encountered bitter and relentless foes who tirelessly assaulted their characters through slander and vicious lies.

And, of course, we see this happening in the life of David. Numerous psalms speak to this theme over and over again. And, of course, the reason, I think, is obvious.

Slander and character assassination is something that frequently happens repeatedly happens to the people of God and therefore it's frequently mentioned and the psalms of God Satan is a murderer and Satan is a liar and we would all expect that he would murder the reputation of godly men through the use of lies that's his stock in trade such tactics lie at the very center of who Satan is and and what he does through his people here on earth You know, you recall all the accusations that were brought against Jesus. They said of Jesus that he was demon-possessed. They said of Jesus that he was a glutton and a wine-bibber.

They said of Jesus that he was stirring up a rebellion against Caesar. And of course, all those were lies. But if they slander the Lord Jesus, then it's no marvel that they would slander his servants also, because the servant is not above his master.

So if they sought to destroy the reputation of Christ, it should come as no surprise that they would seek to destroy ours as well. So this is what David was experiencing, and it's what we experience as well. And not just once or twice in a lifetime.

It's a regularly occurring event throughout our lifetimes. But in spite of that, we can be of good cheer. All these slanders are doing is increasing our reward in heaven.

You remember Jesus said in the Eighth Beatitude in Matthew 5, 11 through 12 blessed are you when men revile you and say all manner of evil against you falsely for my name's sake rejoice and be exceeding glad for great is your reward in heaven and the point of that beatitude is the more people falsely revile you the more God rewards you and so instead of harming you with their slander they're actually increasing your blessedness it's hard to wrap your brain around that but it's true And it's also ironic. Through the wisdom of God, they're working against the very goal they're trying to achieve. They're trying to harm you.

All they're doing is increasing your reward. And so God is good and God is wise to use the worst people can do against us to result in great blessing for us. And so we see that he that sits in the heavens laughs in Psalm 2, and in particular he laughs at the slanderers and has them in derision.

This psalm, as a result, has a very triumphant note in it. The psalmist identifies the evil of the conduct of his enemies. Their attacks on his character and person are not a small matter.

But as soon as he goes to prayer and starts spreading out these slanders before the Lord, all anxiety regarding those slanders disappears. And it's replaced with a spirit of joyful praise and worship. Because David has no doubt that through God he's going to triumph over these evil attacks on him.

and that God will protect him from the calamities that these wicked people hope to bring upon him. So we need to have that same kind of confidence. God knows our character.

He knows what we did or didn't do. And he'll defend us against those who would consume us with their lies. And he will vindicate us and condemn them in due time.

And in the meantime, while we're waiting for him to act and vindicate us, we can give ourselves to his praise and to his worship because that's where our focus should lie not on the slanders you can spend endless amounts of energy focusing on the evil people have done to you instead redirect that energy to giving praise and thanks to god for the goodness he's shown to you knowing that he'll take care of these people in his way and in his time so that's a little overview of our psalm and the attitudes that are being expressed in it uh before we uh go any further we want to read this psalm and so Steve W6YSI if he could read for us Psalm 57 I'd sure appreciate that go ahead Steve Psalm 57 and I'll be reading again from the American Standard Bible Be gracious to me, O God, be gracious to me. My soul takes refuge in thee, and in the shadow of thy wings I will take refuge, till destruction passeth by. I will cry to God Most High, God who accomplishes all things for me.

He will send from heaven and save me. He reproaches him, trampled on me. Selah.

God will send forth his loving kindness and his truth. My soul is among lions. Lions?

I must be, or I'm, I'll get it going here. My soul is among lions. I must lie among those who breathe forth fire.

Even the sons of men whose teeth are spears and arrows and their tongue a sharp sword. Be exalted above the heavens, O God. Let thy glory be above all the earth.

any comments on psalm 57 please come down to the console what was that action Kevin, please go ahead. I'll just get started. But yeah, it, you know, yesterday, it's really a psalm following Psalm 56 in both context and events as well.

And here, you know, yesterday we looked at David. who was surrounded by his mortal enemies as he escaped to Gath in you know the city of Philistine and was recognized and but God had helped him find refuge here now he's escaped the Philistine city and he's found himself, as we know, in the cave of Adullam. And yet, here we see the anointed king of Israel hiding in a cave with a ragtag group of...

men, misfits you might say, but yet despite his circumstances and recognizing the deliverance of God, David presents one of the most wonderful things. expressions of praise that far surpass his circumstance. And it's quite impactful, I think, just the contrast of his current situation and location But yet he's recognizing and praising God.

I was just thinking of how many times did Jesus step away, go to the garden and spend time praising and praying to God. and knowing that he was facing the cross ahead, the challenges ahead, but nevertheless, despite his circumstances, giving praise to the Father, recognizing the mission ahead of him. But this is just a wonderful praise of God.

Glory above all the earth to God. And it's just the expansion of the praise really touched me. KB7, is that acceptable?

Yeah, Kevin, great comments. Thank you for that. You'll notice the heading on this psalm.

It says, to the chief musician. of David when he fled from Saul in the cave. So here's David sitting in a cave being chased down, even though, as Kevin well said, he's already the anointed king of Israel.

And so his position... is in quite a bit of contrast to his circumstances. And, you know, we find that in our own life, don't we?

You know, here we have the position of being adopted sons and daughters of God. We're the bride of Christ. We're the body of Christ.

were already seated in heavenly places, as it says in Ephesians 2, and yet here we are being thrashed and trashed and, as it were, having our reputations and persons beaten and battered. And we just have to, like David, be patient and recognize that, as it says here in verse 3, It says, there are those who would swallow us up. I thought it was interesting.

You know, if you look back at yesterday's Psalm, Psalm 56, Be merciful unto me, O God, verse 1, for man would swallow me up. Verse 2 of Psalm 56, mine enemies would daily swallow me up. And then, of course, verse 3 of Psalm 57, Psalm 57, verse 3, He shall send from heaven and save me from the reproach of him that would swallow me up.

So the picture here, right, is that of a lion, right? What does a lion want to do? It wants to chew you up and swallow you, right?

And Satan walks about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. So this devouring that Satan and his people do of the people of God is common, it's regular, And it's completely out of harmony with not only the truth, but also with our position, as Kevin said, of being crowned children of God. And yet, what we have to do is look past our circumstances to the promises and put our trust in the Lord and give him praise and worship, because we know that man cannot harm us.

what time we are afraid, we'll put our trust in Him. In God, if I put my trust, we saw yesterday in 5611, I will not be afraid what man can do to me. It seems like David is really laying hold of that.

I'm not going to be afraid of what these people are going to do to me because I'm putting my trust in the Lord. All right, other comments. Kevin, thank you for that.

Mark, KJ7PVT, you go ahead first. Okay. I just wanted to point out that the first two, 9, 10, 11, 12 songs that are sung at the I'm going to show you the operation.

I'll give you a point on that. Thank you. I'm going to tell you about the operation.

I'm going to tell you about all the areas that are in the site, which after the execution starts with the I'll copy all. Mark, appreciate that. Mark was saying that in their church, they have a hymn that they sing that's made up of Psalm 57, verses 9, 10, and 11.

So, of course, we know the book of Psalms is the hymn book of the Jewish nation. And so we, of course, as New Covenant Christians, have taken these psalms We have put them to music and we sing them in our churches. So here's the song that they sing at Mark's church: "I will praise thee, O Lord, among the people; I will sing unto thee among the nations: for thy mercy is great unto the heavens, and thy truth unto the clouds.

Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens; let thy glory be above all the earth." What wonderful words to a wonderful song to sing in worship at church. Mark, thanks for sharing with us. that this is the hymn that you guys are singing in your church.

You know, I thought it was interesting. If you look at verse 5 of Psalm 57, verse 5, Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens, let thy glory be above all the earth. And then verse 11, Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens, let thy glory be above the earth.

So what we've got here is we've got a phrase and then a refrain, and a phrase and a refrain. So, This repetition, we do that in our own hymnody in our churches where we'll sing the stanza and then we'll sing a refrain. And then we sing a stanza and then we'll sing a refrain.

And the refrain generally captures the essence of what we're singing in all the verses, right? And so when you look at the essence of this song, it's in the refrains. And the refrain is in verse 5, and the refrain is in verse 11.

So what is our job in the midst of being persecuted? Exalt the Lord. I remember when I went to Bible school, Mark, we sang a song, Be Thou Exalted Forever and Ever.

Be Thou Exalted. Be Thou Exalted. with harp and with song.

And I can't pull the rest of it out of my memory right now, but I love that hymn. And I need to find that and introduce that into our church because it's just a great hymn. Mark, thank you for sharing that with us.

All right, other comments. Please come now. Is that Xen?

Is that Xen? Kevin, please go ahead. Yeah, wonderful point.

I just was... reflecting on where David here says he will take, you know, he takes refuge in the shadow of your wings until the danger passes by, you know. And this is really the same thought in principle.

as Jesus wept over the city in Matthew 23, 37, where he wept over the city of Jerusalem, how he wanted to protect them like a mother hen and that they would take refuge under his wings. And, you know, as a loving parent does, want to protect their young. But David recognized where his refuge was and he acknowledged it.

He said, I'm going to just take refuge in you, God, in you, Lord, until the danger, until the destruction passes by here. And And we can do that. You know, the circumstances that sometimes we find ourselves in, if we're surrounded by our enemy and there's hostility around us, that's not a permanent situation, and that's not a permanent circumstance.

And our soul is forever protected in our Lord and His protection, KB7 to that extent. Kevin, thank you for bringing out that metaphor, that illustration. If any of you have ever had chickens or if you've ever had ducks or whatever, you've seen this behavior.

I've seen it. We used to have egg-laying ducks, khaki camels. When they had little chicks, the mom would spread out her wings.

And literally, the chicks would run under those wings, and she would harbor them there and protect them. And that's exactly the picture here that, as Kevin well said, is used not only in Psalm 57, verse 1, "...in the shadow of thy wings will I make thy refuge." BUT ALSO MATTHEW 23:37 WHERE JESUS SAYS, "HOW OFT I WOULD HAVE GATHERED THEE AS A HEN WITH HER CHICKS, AND YOU WOULD NOT." SO JESUS OFFERS US HIS SHELTER. HE OFFERS US HIS PROTECTION.

HE OFFERS US HIS STRENGTH. AND WE JUST SIMPLY NEED TO GO TO HIM AND SAY TO HIM, "LORD, I NEED SOME SHELTER TODAY. I NEED YOU TO COVER ME WITH YOUR WINGS TODAY AND PROTECT ME, DELIVER ME, STRENGTHEN ME, AND GIVE ME some peace and some comfort in the midst of the calamities that are falling down on my head all around me and so that's what's being said here my soul trust in the verse 1 yea in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge until these calamities be overpassed and so you know I know that you as well as I have lots of calamities in our lives now where are we going to go for protection and for deliverance but to the Lord.

And when we do, he shelters us in his wings. And it's interesting, all the analogies in the scriptures that revolve around that particular imagery. Kevin, thanks for pointing out verse 1 there.

Question. Go ahead there, Beck. Sorry about that, but there must be dead air, so I'm going to go ahead and ask it.

Why, in verse 10, doesn't it just say, For your mercies and your truth reaches the heavens. Why is there like a limitation on truth where it only goes into the clouds? To me, the heavens go way beyond the clouds.

Yeah, copy that. You know, when you're using poetic language and you're trying to have some verbal variety, you wind up picking different words that are not meant to be taken, you know, with a wooden literalism. You know, the heavens here can be the atmospheric heavens, okay?

The clouds are in the atmospheric heavens. The idea is that... You know, we these clouds are like thousands of feet above us We're what what five feet tall six feet tall something like that And so it's a matter of comparison not a matter of limitation Okay, it's a matter of comparison not a limitation.

He's not saying well it only goes as high as the clouds and this other thing it goes clear out to the edge of the universe and That's not the idea. The idea here is that both of them are high above, beyond us. We can't begin to measure them.

We can only look up and worship. So we've got to be careful, Bec, about not taking things too literally. Recognize this is poetic language.

Recognize that these are comparisons, not limitations. And when we see that, then we see that there's not a problem here. Back to you there, Bec.

Roger that. Okay, thanks, Pastor Mack. I have a problem with gray area.

Yeah, I copy that. I think that, you know, when it comes to a lot of phraseology in the Scripture, you know, we have to understand what it means, not just what it says. So, for example, Genesis 3.15, right, where it says that, regarding the seat of the serpent and the seat of the woman, right?

And it says that the seat of the serpent is going to crush the heel of Jesus and that Jesus is going to crush the head of the serpent. And none of that literally took place. You know, Jesus didn't have his heel crushed, and Satan didn't have his head crushed, because Satan doesn't have a head, per se.

He's a spirit, right? But the language is used to convey the idea that one person is going to be temporarily harmed, the other person is going to be permanently ruined. So we have to do that, you know, when we read the scriptures and allow the New Testament to inform our interpretation of the Old Testament and the language that it contains.

So, you know, while there's certainly a place to take things literally, there's also a place to have a more nuanced understanding based on how that concept plays out in the New Testament and how it is explained and expressed there. All right, back to any other comments. Go ahead.

Go ahead. Yes, Max, if you can hear me. We also remember that these are written to the children.

Well, these are written by David, and they're probably in Hebrew. And he is a songwriter. And so I know, you know, many of us write songs and you can get yourself into it.

into the idea that this is a song and it is meant to be sung and remembered and the words sometimes need to be fashioned in such a way that it can be sung and that might be what's happening here too if this was not written in English it was written in people that use that yeah I was unable to to copy most of what mark had to say i didn't get over to my quarter lane repeater soon enough uh can anybody give me a summary of what uh what mark kj7 pvt had to say come with a relay trs go ahead cody Yeah, he was just saying, reminding us that these songs are written in Hebrew, so it might not translate quite exact. Yeah, copy that. Okay, good.

Anytime you go from a source language to a receptor language, you know, you're going to probably lose a little bit of nuance, a little bit of perspective. And that's one reason why we study the original languages. We study Hebrew.

We study Greek. And especially ministers of the gospel. Who can explain those things to us?

Mark, thank you for that. And Cody K7TR, thanks for the relay. All right.

Any other comments? Please come down. All right, I'd like to comment on verse 4.

It says, "My soul is among lions." And I lie even among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword. Well, there's a couple of mixed metaphors here. The idea of my soul is among lions, that reminds us of Daniel in the lion's den, right?

where he got thrown down into this pit, right? And God restrained the lions from harming him all night long. And you remember after he was pulled out, his accusers were thrown in there and instantly consumed.

The idea is that we're surrounded by things that we are incapable of defending ourselves against. So God is capable, and God can restrain the actions of lions. He can certainly restrain the actions of wicked people and their wicked tongues.

And then that, of course, is the next metaphor here, is that we have fire and the idea that people would turn up the reputation of another with their words. And then we have this third metaphor, spears and arrows. So we've got lions, we've got fire, we've got spears and arrows and sharp swords, right?

And the idea of all of these metaphors is that they provide a picture, a very powerful picture of the evil that people intend to do towards us. They intend to swallow us up like a lion. burn us up like fire and cut us up like swords and arrows and spears.

And yet, God is able to protect us against all of that. So what happens right after verse 4 is verse 5. Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens, and let thy glory be above all the earth.

Verse 6, they prepared a net for my steps. My soul is bowed down. They dug a pit in front of me.

There's another metaphor. In the midst thereof, they're fallen themselves. And so, you know, what David is doing is he's acknowledging what these people are doing and how evil they are.

and the plans that they have and the destruction they're capable of. But notice verse 7, My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed. I will sing and give praise.

So he's looking past his persecutors and his slanderers and those who would swallow him up, and he's looking at his gods. and he's saying, you know what, in comparison to God, these people are like nothing. And so I'm just going to focus on God, not on my enemies.

I'm going to focus on his word and not what these wretched people say about me. And I'm going to just give myself to praise instead of grinding my teeth over what these folks did to me or what they plan to do to me. All right, WB7MX here, looking for comments on Psalm 57.

Please come down. All right, while you're thinking, verse eight, Wake up, my glory, awake psaltery and harp. I myself will awake early.

That's what we did this morning, didn't we? We woke up early. And we got on the radio here.

We're talking about the Lord. And, you know, verse 8 is talking about music, isn't it? Awake, my glory, awake psaltery and harp.

Those are musical instruments. And so one of the things we can do to overcome the discouragement that so easily assaults us from our slanderers is to sing praises to God. Mark mentioned that verse 9, 10, and 11 are a hymn of praise that he sings in his church, that they, the whole church, sings, right?

And so that is how we overcome discouragement. That's how we overcome discouragement. allowing them to live inside our heads and to create negativity in our hearts is we refuse to think about them and instead we think about God and we sing praise to him.

We spread out in prayer before him the needs that we have and they would go away with joy instead of discouragement. So if you're down in the dumps, put some music on, listen to it, sing along, focus on God and His Word and His promises, and you will find yourself gaining perspective on these wicked assaulters and also encouragement with reference to them. Yeah, Mark was referring to the words in phone 57 on the heading. Alteket means "destroy nothing" and miktetam means "things which are firm and changeless." And so the idea here is that David is offering a prayer not to be destroyed, and he is talking about the permanent changeless fixed truth of the moral governance of the universe that never go away. There are many devices in the heart of a man, nevertheless to count to the Lord.

That shall stand, and that's the encouragement that we have. All right, we are just about out of time. We do have the Vintage Military Radio Network following on our net, but I think we have time for one more comment.

Verse 3, he shall send from heaven. And so the idea there is that God is above. He's over the top of, is the idea.

And you remember the Lord's Prayer, right? "Our Father who art in heaven." Why is that little phrase, "who art in heaven," thrown in there? Okay?

Why is David making this emphasis on how high God is? Well, you know, if you've ever been involved in any kind of fighting or military action, you know the high ground is the good ground, right? And so God has the highest ground.

He has the best position. He has the best perspective. He has the best understanding.

And he has the best ability to, from his exalted position, to be able to survey the entire field of conflict and then, of course, do what needs to be done in order to bring about the protection and the victory of his people. So it's good to know that there's somebody way high up who is looking down, who is observing, and who has the position and the power to be able to take care of us. All right, we are out of time.
