Heavenly Father, we just come to you this morning and we ask that you bless our Bible study, and that each person that's here listening today and the ones that are participating, Lord, just give them an extra special blessing here as we learn more about you through these scriptures. and brings us the bread of life. I over-slurred all these fires, Lord. I just want to ask that you remember the firefighters and protect the people that are in the way of this fire and the surrounding homeless up here.

Please come down. All right, we're looking at Psalm 36 today. And Psalm 36 is about the contrast between the saved and the lost and their attitude toward God.

There's actually only two in two classes of people in this world. There's the saved and the lost. There's the godly and the wicked.

There are those who fear God and those who do not. And between those two classes of people, those who fear God and those who do not, there's a tremendous contrast. And it can be seen most sharply in their attitude towards God.

Those who fear God have a reverence toward God, a love of God, and a powerful desire to worship and serve God. And those who have no fear of God... They despise God, disregard God, and they disobey God.

And so, in a word, those who fear God are God-centered, and those who do not fear God are self-centered. And the result is that one class of people live by God's law, and the other lives in violation of God's law. So our psalm today, Psalm 36, sets these two classes of people in sharp contrast to each other.

In verses 1 to 4, we see that the absence of the fear of God produces wickedness in the life. And then in verses 5 to 12, we see that the presence of the fear of God produces worship and prayer. And so the point is, is that.

Our attitude towards God has a profound impact on the entirety of our lives, our attitudes, our conduct, and our speech. Now, this matter of the fear of God is a major theme in the Word of God. The phrase, the fear of God, occurs over 200 times in the Bible, and it consists both of of the terror and the dread of God's wrath and displeasure, as well as the reverential awe that we have of the infinity, power, holiness, and justice of God.

So what the fear of God is, is that when we become as Christians aware of the majesty and the holiness of God, so that it draws from us this profound reverence, that sees the smile of God as our greatest treasure and the frown of God as our greatest dread, then we can be said to be people who fear God. So what we see is that David is looking at the wicked. He sees their transgressions.

And from that he reasons to the fact that there must be no fear of God before their eyes. So that is the opening statement there, and the rest of the psalm is about that issue. So anyway, Beck, Alpha Alpha 5 Yankee, if you could read for us Psalm 36, I would sure appreciate that.

He derives his wickedness on his bed. He sets himself in a way that is not good. He does not abhor evil.

Your mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens. Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. Your righteousness is like the great mountains.

And I agree with Roger. Boy, what a magnificent psalm here. In the contrast of two conditions, in such a dramatic and a clear way.

I think, too, for me, I see not only the lost here, but really a special category of the lost, those that have given themselves over to pride in a substantial way, but completely over to a debased mind, if you will. They've replaced their conscience with self-indulgence and scheming against the other. They had the thief, you know, basically...

sharing themselves and there's no accountability to anyone. There's no accountability to God, which is what a great fallacy that is. And, of course, that's expressed in the contrast of the beauty and the blessing of walking with God and having that fear of God, having that humility to walk with God.

I mean, I think we see this in, first thing that came to mind was Romans 1.8, but I think in Romans 3.12, all describes this group of people that have given themselves over to a debased mind here. And, you know, I think there's a little distinction between those out there that just think they're trying to do good. and but but leaving God out and haven't had the opportunity to embrace the gospel or have not embraced the gospel but this particular category of lost really has determined in their heart to perform evil because they are the standard that they set, and all despite, you know, in complete, really, aggression toward accountability to God.

KB7 is that example. Yeah, Kevin, you are exactly right. There are certainly degrees of the lack of the fear of God.

You know, you've got the willful, defiant, hateful people who answer to no one but themselves, and their behavior is exceptionally wicked. And then you've got other folks who... you know, really don't see God as their highest source of authority, but at the same time they recognize that there's a general morality and accountability for their behavior, and so they conduct themselves more decently, in spite of the fact that they're still unsaved.

So there are certainly degrees of the lack of fear of God, and David, of course, is dealing with the most extreme case here. Verse 1, the transgression of the wicked... says, "Within my heart there is no fear of God before His eyes." So the degree of the fear of God is going to have an impact on the degree of the behavior and the conduct and the sense of accountability that we have in our lives.

There's plenty of unsaved people who have some fear of God, which is a curb on their moral behavior, but certainly not enough to cause them to trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and as Savior and to take seriously the Bible. and to follow what God has to say regarding his will for their lives. So, yeah, we've got the extreme that's described in Romans 1, as you pointed out.

Thank you for that. And then we've got lesser cases of it. All right, any other comments on this passage?

Really appreciate that. We were all in the category of verse 1 through 4 when we were unfaithful. And it was the grace of God that put the fear of God into our hearts, which wasn't naturally that awakened us to the fact that we have accountability.

You know, Mark, I remember so well when I got saved when I was 17, and that was exactly the thing that motivated me to seek Christ and salvation was the fear of God. I was reading a book about the final judgment, the last judgment. and I realized I'm not ready for this.

And I was afraid that I was going to be cast into hell for my sins. And so out of that fear, I was motivated to seek reconciliation with God. Prior to that time, I thought I was a pretty decent person, and I thought life was going pretty well, and I was a good kid, and all of those things.

So you're right. The lack of the fear of God is what we're all born into. And it's what we can deepen by repeated sin and hardening of the heart.

And it's that which then arises that results in and brings us to repentance of sin and faith in Jesus as our Savior. So, Mark, thank you for pointing out the fact that we are all at one point in time. to one degree or another like those in verses 1 to 4.

We didn't have the fear of God. And so praise the Lord for awakening that fear within us and causing us then to seek salvation as a result. Great comment, Mark, KJ7PVT.

Roger, WB-7VZL, go ahead. Yeah, thank you for these remarks that I've heard. I can't help but think of...

Paul as he deals with the Corinthian church and that they have, as he says in 1 Corinthians chapter 5, when we talk about being prideful, and you have become arrogant. and have not mourned instead in order that the one who has done this deed might be removed from your midst. So there are characteristics, even those that have heard about Jesus and haven't read Leviticus 18, the boundaries here we have the word "the" and the "the" some incestual relationships within the church, and they were saying, "Well, yeah, we're inclusive.

within the confines of the church. And Paul is trying to define some boundaries that were, as I said, expressed by the Lord before He became incarnate. And they were prideful of Yeah, well said.

And, you know, I think what we see here is an erection of the fear of man. We want to not offend anybody. We don't want to make anybody feel embarrassed or feel bad.

Right. So we're going to modify our boundaries so that everyone can feel welcomed and affirmed and included. And as a result, they wind up violating God's boundaries.

And that's especially true in the area of sexual ethics and behavior. As you said, the Bible is very clear about what appropriate sexual behavior is. And when that is violated, as it was in 1 Corinthians chapter 5, then that needs to be called out and rebuked and, if necessary, church discipline exercised.

You know, there's a passage in Proverbs 29, 25. Proverbs 29, 25, it says, brings a snare but whoever puts his trust in the Lord shall be safe and so we have this contrast between the fear of God and the fear of man and what the problem in the Corinthian church was is that they feared what people thought more than they feared what God thought and so the opposite side of not fearing God is that we do fear men and then men become the standard by which we judge behavior and actions and words And that, of course, leads to the embrace of the worst kind of perversion. And so it's imperative that if we fear God, then we're not going to fear what other people might think or say or do as we stand with God and for God.

So, Roger, thank you for pointing out that contrast. between the fear of man and the fear of God. All right, other comments, please come now.

KD-70S. KD-70S, sir, please go ahead. Yeah, just listening to the conversations here recalls scripture when Jesus said, "And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul, but rather fear which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

So I don't really have any further comment on that, but just that verse kind of brings to my remembrance. Yeah, and that's a great passage. And one more example of the fear of God in the New Testament of it.

A lot of people say, oh, the fear of God, that's an Old Testament doctrine. Now we talk about the love of God in the New Testament. Well, it's amazing the number of passages, both in the Gospels and in the Epistles that talk about the importance of the fear of God and living in that And so what Jesus is saying there is don't fear men, fear God.

No man is able to cast you into hell, but God can cast you into hell. And so therefore, our highest concern needs to be what does God think? I mean, the worst people can do is kill us.

And we see that when unbelievers kill a Christian, all they do is promote him to heaven. And so it increases his blessing, so they failed in their goal to bring actual harm. And so, yes, only God has the power to dispose of our souls either into heaven or into hell.

And so he's the one that we need to have the greatest concern about with reference to what does he think about it? And what is my relationship with him? And you know, if we fear God, it casts out the fear of everything else and everyone else.

And so it brings a tremendous liberty from being afraid of anything else because we know that we're right with God. God is protecting us. God is providing for us.

And therefore, we don't need to worry about what people might do in regard to anything because they have to go through God first to get to us. That's a great passage, Eric. Thank you for bringing it out.

Yeah, I just wanted to unpack the contrast here just a little bit more. You know, in the first floor, I think it is there, where, you know, it plots wickedness. on his bed, but here he rejects evil.

This denotes that he does not have, this person does not have the capacity or the capability to even have his conscience recognize or respond to evil. In fact, he's in his bed plotting wickedness. And this...

This really gives the idea that his conscience has been feared, that he doesn't have the capability to even recognize at this point the extent of his evil. But yet then the heights of God's love immediately contrast, and I appreciate Mark's comments, it kind of shows us the idea of what we read in Romans 5:8. "For while we were yet sinners, God commanded his love toward us." And we see this here.

And then you think about some of the most depraved and evil people that we've seen in the Bible. and many of them never turn and repent. I wrote a little book on a sermon called Not Beyond His Love about Manasseh and King Manasseh who took reign at 12 and he became an extremely...

horrific, wicked king and sacrificed his children, other children, Baal worship, some of the worst of the worst. He'd be up there with Hitler or Attila the Hun and some of the most depraved yet. We read in 2 Chronicles that he was saved.

He did repent and God rested in him. Even from the depths of his depravity, So there is a tremendous contrast. But even God's love, the heights of his love can reach down and transform and save the most depraved when there is true repentance.

KB 7 is that exact. Yeah, Kevin, thank you for that. You know, a hard heart, a feared conscience, a rebellious spirit, a defiant attitude, all of those things mark a person who doesn't have the fear of God.

And of course that certainly marked Manasseh, as you said, that king of the Old Testament. And yet, when God's judgment was brought on him, he did repent. At the end of his life he got saved, and we expect to see him in Heaven.

you know, but what he did is he came into an understanding of The fear of God and he realized that he was a fool to live in defiance of God and in the absence of the fear of God and so I That's the nature of conversion, is we go from treating God with indifference, and treating Him with contempt, and treating Him with neglect, to now God is at the center of our lives, and He is the focus of our concern as to what He thinks about who we are, about what we believe, and about how we behave, and about the words that we speak. And so thank you for bringing up that example of Manasseh who went from not fearing God to being someone who feared God. And that God broke through that feared conscience and brought the light of salvation to him.

What a wonderful gift that was. All right, any other comments? Please come down to the call sign.

Yeah, I was just pondering the text that Eric highlighted. in Matthew chapter 10, verse 28. And I can understand why the theologian John Scott came to the conclusion that the soul is not immortal.

It is presented that way. But Jesus... will ultimately destroy the soul and the body, the soul and body in hell.

So he came to the conclusion that there is an annihilation moment, and that moment is in Revelation chapter... chapter 20, where he recognized that hell does not go on forever and ever, because there is an annihilation to destroy both soul and body, as Jesus says here in Eric's passage, over. Yeah, Roger, I have to say I completely disagree with that analysis.

The soul is eternal. The word "destroy" there doesn't mean to annihilate. It means to ruin as far as its original purpose goes.

If I have a light bulb and I drop it on the floor and it breaks, it's destroyed, but it's not annihilated. All the parts are there. It just ceases to carry out the function.

that it was originally designed for. That same book of Revelation, in chapter 14, verses 10 and 11, they talk about those that are in hell. It says, The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation.

And he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascends up forever and ever, and they have no rest day or night. who worship the beast in his image and whosoever receives the mark of his name.

We see the rich man in hell, and he is speaking and asking for a drop of water on his tongue. And so the lake of fire is just simply the extension and the intensification of the torment of hell, death and hell are cast into the lake of fire. And the other passage that talks about destruction, I think, that is really helpful here is in 2 Thessalonians chapter 1, where it says...

In verse 7, 2 Thessalonians 1, 7, it says, And to you who are troubled, rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, taking vengeance on them that know not God and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. Now, here it is. verse 9 who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his power so the idea of destruction there is that we are forever separated from God not that we are annihilated and so annihilation has been annihilation of the soul has been a doctrine that's been taught by some Christians But I think the vast weight of biblical evidence is against that.

And it says these shall go away into eternal life, but the rest will go into eternal punishment. And so thank you for pointing that out, the word destruction. I think there's a couple of different ways that word destruction can be viewed.

But when it's used in the Bible, it's not used of annihilation. It's just used of being... destroyed from its original purpose with that fellowship with God and now they're eternally separated from God Roger thanks for your comment all right any other comments on this passage please come now Lamar KJ7PVT please go ahead The Thank you.

Thank you. Thank you. Yeah, thank you for bringing out that illustration of someone who fears God and someone who doesn't in the story of the publican and the sinner.

And yes, you see the pride on the part of the publican. He has no fear of God. All he has is praise for himself.

And then we see the sinner whose focus is on God, and he has nothing but condemnation of himself. And there is a very clear illustration of the contrast between those who fear God and and those who do not. And so thank you for pointing that out.

Yeah, the man who doesn't fear God flatters himself. He says, you know, I'm a good person. And, you know, when I've been sharing the Gospel, Mark, with people, it's like, well, you know, why should God be upset with me?

I'm a good person. And they flatter themselves because what they do is they hold themselves not to God's standard but to their own standard of what they think a good person should be. and they meet their own standards, and so they flatter themselves that they're a good person and God should be real happy with them.

And so because they don't look at what God has to say and what God's standards are, They don't see themselves as sinners and therefore they don't see themselves as being in need of salvation So, you know a lot of evangelism mark. I think is helping people to Fear God and to recognize number one. He has a law number two I violated that law and number three there's severe consequences for doing so and those consequences are both in time and in eternity and that you know we need to flee from the wrath to come and we need to flee to Jesus in order to have forgiveness and everlasting life because you know as it says there Matthew 25 that there's only two ways in which people are going to be disposed of on the day of judgment It says, let me just turn to that passage and just read it.

Matthew 25 and verse 46, it says, And these shall go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into life eternal. So anyway, those are the two choices. You know, the publican recognized that, and he wanted to go away into life eternal.

And the Pharisee thought he was good stuff, and unfortunately he was going to go away into everlasting destruction. Mark, thank you for pointing out that story and the wonderful contrast it presents. between those who fear God and those who do not.

Thank you. Yeah, amen. The new birth marks the division between those who don't fear God and those who do.

And what a transformation that results in. All right, we are running out of time. And Mark, thank you for pointing out...

as thou shall make them drink. Verse 9, with thee is the fountain of light. In thy light we shall see light.

Verse 10, continue in thy loving kindness. And so what we see here is that this guy in verses 1 to 4 is all about himself. And the guy in verses 5 through 12 is all about God.

And that's the difference between someone who doesn't fear God and who does fear God. The person who doesn't fear God is very self-centered. And the person who does fear God is very God-centered.

And he doesn't want to talk about himself. He wants to talk about God and who he is, what he's done. the blessings he's brought, the goodness he's showed, the mercy he's displayed, and most of all, the salvation he's provided.

And so the contrast here couldn't be sharper, just like the contrast that Mark pointed out between the publican and the Pharisees. But the good news is that, as Kevin pointed out, there's salvation for the worst of the Pharisees. as Mark pointed out Kevin pointed out Manasseh, Mark pointed out Nicodemus and so how do we cultivate the fear of God in people well we talk about his existence we talk about and trust in Jesus.

Father, may his words lead them to that light of Christ that would cause them to understand him, love him, obey him, serve him, and follow him. Lord, bring salvation through Jeff's preaching to the kids there at the camp. Lord, we just want to pray for Jim's M7BKE as he's talking with Jay.

Father, Jay has expressed fear of death. and the day of judgment, and I pray, Lord, that you would bring Jay to salvation. Help him to see that by trusting in Christ, he can have peace.

Father, and just for a complete recovery, from this accident that he was in. We pray for their neighbor, Naomi, Lord, to be pleased to work in her heart and bring her to salvation.

Lord, I continue to pray for my pastor, Pastor Jeff Blackwell, severe ulcerative colitis. Lord, we pray for his healing. Lord, may you raise him up and restore him back to his pastoral position and responsibilities and ministry soon.

Father, we just continue to pray for Cody K7TRF, for his father, Roger. for healing from his stage four colon cancer. Lord, we also pray for his uncle Doug, who had a severe head injury.

Father, we pray for his ongoing treatment and recovery. Lord, thank you that he's awake now and that he seems to be able to mentally handle his situation with some degree of peace. Pray, Lord, that his feeding tube would be able to be removed and that he would be able to eat normally again.

And it reminded me of Jesus. And, you know, we talk about how Jesus is reflected in these psalms. Well, he highlights that in Matthew 23 at the end where he says, I'd like to gather you under my wings like children.

You know, like a chick handles the chicks under her wings. So I just couldn't help but think of the classic hymn, Under His Wings, over. Roger, thank you so much for bringing that up.

And yes, that New Testament connection is really an important one. Oh, Jerusalem, Jerusalem, how often will I have gathered thee, as a chicken gathers her chicks under her wings, and you would not. Therefore your house is left to you desolate.

And yes, under his wings. You know, we had ducks that we had to raise eggs. And they had their little ducklings.

And I saw that exact thing where they would spread their wings out and the little ducklings would get underneath there and mom would protect them. And so what a wonderful passage. And, yes, I'm very familiar with the hymn, Under His Wings, Under His Wings.

And his wife Pam had lupus. Do you remember him at all there, Roger? Yeah, I remember him checking in.

What reminded me of what was quite significant to him is that he was always reaching out for people for the sake of Christ. and he had a big heart over it yeah that example praise the lord hopefully we'll hear from him when he gets his antenna up uh he emailed me right and he said hey um you know i was on the west coast long study about seven years ago um and uh he thought maybe jerry 87 er remembered him uh but um long story short um He's still listening. And a tree fell on his ham shack and took his antenna down and destroyed his ham shack.

He got his ear out, okay, but he's got to get an antenna up. And anyway, he had asked for a lot for his wife Pam, who has lupus. autoimmune disease where your immune system attacks your own body, you know.

Anyway, they've been married for like 30 plus years, something like that. Just pulling this stuff out of my memory from the email. I don't have it in front of me right now.

So, yeah. And it sounds like the kind of guy that would reach out to others. So, yeah.

He's a pilot team. He talks about his wife, Kim, which I've already discussed. Yeah, they've been married 41 years.

Yeah, and for 35 of those, she's been chronically ill. Anyway, he talks about his Amshack, whatnot. So anyway, that's what I know about Scott.

Don't even know his call, but he's just one of those aging ham, like all of us, I guess, that was actually serving the church, connected with the Seventh-day Adventist church in Hong Kong for many years.
