Gracious Heavenly Father, we thank you for this day and for the blessings of being able to be on this West Coast Bible study and listen to your word and have a discussion about it, Lord. And especially for the prayers that we have starting the study in. for those at the end, which is the way we should start each day.

Start each one of those individual Bible studies and prayer times, Lord. We just ask for your blessing upon those that have health issues and for those caregivers, Lord. We pray that you would work on us as we witness to each other and to others every day.

we ask that you would keep evil out of our lives and just keep Satan at bay. We pray for our nation, Lord, and we just lift up those letters in battle at this time, Lord. We just thank you for your blessings.

All right, this is WB7MAX, and we just had Will KM5F open in prayer for us. Will, thank you for that. All right, we are in Psalm 31 today.

Psalm 31, like most of the psalms, is a prayer to God. by a man of God who is both confident and troubled at the same time. We often find ourselves in this kind of a situation, a situation where we're both very confident and also very troubled.

at the same time. Now our confidence, of course, is in God. We're confident in God's power, we're confident in God's goodness, in His mercy, His wisdom, His promises, His love, and all the things that God is to us.

And we know that God is gracious and faithful, we know God loves us, we know He's working everything together for our good, and He has a wonderful future for us in heaven. And we are confident in all of those things. But we're also at the same time often troubled.

Our personal circumstances are filled with stress. Our relationships perhaps are fraught with tension. And, of course, we always have our ever-present enemies who are aggressively seeking to harm us.

And so we struggle also with inward difficulties, maybe a convicting conscience. We're aware that we fall short of what we ought to be and do. Maybe we've got some physical infirmities.

We have emotional anxieties. And because of all these things, we feel troubled and unsettled. So what are we going to do?

Well, the answer is we're going to bring our troubles to the object of our confidence. And by that means, we're going to find peace regarding them. So, yeah, we've all got problems, but we also know of a solution to those problems and a solution that we are very confident in.

And so we go to God, who is the object of our confidence, with our troubles, which are the source of our anxieties, and thereby find our fears resolved and our joy restored when we cast our cares on Him. So that's what's going on in our psalm. We see strong expressions of confidence in God.

We see desperate expressions of... of trouble of heart and circumstance, and yet we see all of that resolved as those troubles are brought to God and cast on Him. And as the Bible says, cast your burdens on the Lord.

He will sustain you. He will never suffer the righteous to be shaken. So great passage here today.

Jeff, AK6OK, is going to read for us. Jeff, if you could read, please, Psalm 31. Psalm 31.

Okay, and good morning, Pastor Max and everybody else. Gorgeous day here in California. I'm going to read out of the NLT and start with verse 1, Psalm 31, verse 1.

Oh, Lord, I have come to you for protection. Don't let me be disgraced. Save me from what you do is right.

Turn your ear to listen to me. Rescue me quickly. Be my rock of protection, a fortress where I will be safe.

At verse 3, you are my rock and my fortress. For the honor of your name leads me out of this danger. Pull me from the trap my enemies set for me, for I find protection in you alone.

I entrust my spirit to your hand. Rescue me, Lord, for you are a faithful God. I hate those who worship worthless idols.

I trust in the Lord. I will be glad and rejoice in your unfailing love. For you have seen my troubles, and you care about the anguish of my soul.

You have not handed me over to my enemies, but have set me in a safe place. Have mercy on me, Lord, for I am in distress. Tears blur my eyes.

My body and soul are withering away. And verse 10, I am dying from grief. My years are shortened by sadness.

Sin has drained my strength. I am wasting away from within. And verse 11, I am scorned by all my enemies and despised by my neighbors.

Even my friends are afraid to come near me. When they see me on the street, they run the other way. I'm ignored as if I were dead.

as if I were a broken pot. I have heard many rumors about me, and I am surrounded by terror. My enemies conspire against me, plotting to take my life.

But I am entrusting you, O Lord, saying, You are my God. My future is in Your hands. Excuse me.

Rescue me from those who hunt me down relentlessly. Verse 16, Let your favor shine on your servants. In your unfavoring love, rescue me.

Don't let me be disgraced, O Lord, for I call out to you for help. Let the wicked be disgraced. Let them lie silent in the grave.

Since their lying lips, those proud and arrogant lips that accuse the godly, How great is the goodness you have stored up for those who fear you. You lavish it on those who come to you for protection, blessing them before the watching world. Verse 20, you hide them in the shelter of your presence, safe from those who conspire against them.

You shelter them in your presence, far from accusing tongues. Praise the Lord, for he has shown me the wonders of his unfailing love. He kept me safe when my city was under attack.

In panic, I cried out, I am cut off from the Lord. But you heard my cry for mercy and answered my call for help. And finally, 23, love the Lord, all you godly ones.

For the Lord protects those who are loyal to him, but he harshly punishes the arrogant. So be strong and courageous, all you who put your hope in the Lord. There you go, Max.

Thank you for that reading. Really appreciate that. So what we see here is David expressing his confidence in God in verses 1 to 8.

David casting his troubles on God, verses 9 to 18. And then David obtains peace from God, verses 19 to 24. So he starts out with God, he goes to his troubles, and he winds up with God.

So great example here of how to pray. And that is that we start out with our Father who art in heaven. And then we talk about our needs.

Give me this day my daily bread. Forgive my sins. right don't allow me to be tempted above that which I'm able and then closes and prays in confidence thine is the kingdom and the glory and the power forever amen so great pattern of prayer here alright any comments on this section Psalm 31 please come now if you call sign Red XM Kevin, KB7ZXN, please go ahead.

Good morning, KB7ZXN, checking in. And, yeah, good overview, Max. You know, this psalm is interesting and unique in some ways.

He really covers almost every aspect of the human experience of faith under pressure. And we see him go through so many different scenarios and the different pressures, the betrayals, the difficulties, the challenges that try our faith. And But under such pressures, under such difficulty, still reaching out to the, as you pointed out, the object of that faith.

And really, I think the highlight of this psalm is verse 5, where Jesus quoted that from the cross there. KB 7, Zedek Sinner. You know, Kevin, I really, really like the phrase you just said, faith under pressure.

And, you know, that's how faith grows. Faith doesn't grow if there's no pressure on it. And so God brings circumstances into our lives...

to cause us to turn to him, trust in him, reflect on his promises, remember his power, rejoice in his fatherly care, and thus deepen our faith and confidence in him. And, you know, what's interesting, Kevin, is... It says in verse 22, "I said in my haste, I am cut off from before thine eyes.

Nevertheless, you heard the voice of my supplications when I cried to you." And you know, we can draw hasty conclusions about God when He's got us under pressure, right? So we're under this pressure and we're thinking, "Wow, God must have abandoned me. God must not love me.

God must not be hearing my prayers." And we come to hasty conclusions. Well, it's not that God doesn't love us. It's not that he doesn't hear our prayers.

It's not that he's abandoned us. It's just that he's taking time for two things. Number one, for us to grow and mature because the struggles we're in need to go on for a period of time to accomplish their purpose in our lives.

And then number two, he's delaying because other things have to work out for him to work out his answer to our prayers. So let's not be hasty in judging God when we're under pressure. You know, the wife and I do quite a bit of canning, right?

We've got this pressure cooker. And we put the jars in there and crank it up to 7 pounds or 10 pounds or whatever it is. And we just let him sit there and marinate for hours.

five minutes or ten minutes or twenty minutes or whatever it calls for, right? And those poor cans inside that pressure cooker are thinking, when are they going to let me out? Well, when the appointed time comes, you know, we turn off the heat and we let the pressure go down.

Eventually we open the lid and pull those things out, and they're out from under that pressure. And in a better state than they were before. Before they were just empty jars, right?

And now they're full of good, beautiful applesauce, just looks fantastic, sitting there proudly on the shelf waiting to serve up a wonderful nutrition. And so those jars are way better off after the pressure than before the pressure. And so that's what fate does is it fills us with good things.

and we just have to be patient with the process. So, Kevin, thank you for that phrase, faith under pressure. I really like that.

Follow-up, go ahead. Yeah, I just wanted to, again... point out verse 5 here too this is Jesus quotes part of this verse in Luke 23 46 the last words he says on the cross here and talking about faith under pressure of course we know Jesus is 100% God but he was also 100% man suffering grace are suffering greatly and and um but yet never uh losing his faith from his human standpoint and um and even at that this expression in verse five of grace uh to you god i commit my spirit and uh and you know as it's pointed out too even prior you know You are my rock, the permanent expression of an objective truth, but yet you are also my rock, my refuge, is the application of that.

And so, on one hand, he recognizes the objective truth, but then he applies that to these circumstances. That could be said with that example. Yeah, Kevin, appreciate that a lot.

You know, yes, Jesus was in the pressure cooker, wasn't he? His faith was under pressure. And in fact, just prior to this, he said, my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

Right? And even though he felt forsaken by God and in fact was indeed forsaken by God, he he still kept turning towards God. You know, he still kept his faith in God, even though God had turned his back on him because he had become sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

And yet, you know, he says, you know, it is finished. And he says, Father, into thy hand I commend my spirit. So, yes, this is a messianic psalm.

And so there's much here in this psalm that Jesus himself was thinking and saying in his lifetime, and especially during the time he was on the cross. And so, yeah, you know, we have these objective truths. I know God works all things together for good to them who love the Lord.

And then we have that subjective application. God's working all things together for me. I love the Lord, and so I'm going to take this objective promise that's given to everyone, and I'm going to subjectively apply it to myself.

And so David could say, into thy hand I commit my spirit. Jesus can say, into thy hand I commit my spirit. And, you know, we can say the same thing because God has redeemed us.

And so God was going to redeem Jesus out of the grave. And so he could entrust his spirit, his soul, to God, knowing that God would care for him, take him to heaven, and then, of course, resurrect him in three days, and he would be in that condition forever. So thank you for pointing out the messianic aspect of this psalm, and also the personal application of these objective truths to our personal life.

and our personal situation. You know, it doesn't do any good to read the Bible if you don't apply it to yourself or to your circumstances. And so it's important to learn and then apply.

Great comment. Yeah, Lee was commenting on verse 19. Oh, how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee.

which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men. And so we just need to believe, as Lee said, exercise faith in God, and the fact that he has been very good to us, and he is going to be good to us, and we just need to continue trusting in him, fearing him. and looking to Him to meet our needs.

Great comment there, Lee, AL7KG. Thank you for pointing out verse 19 and the encouragement that is to us that God is good, and we need to just keep trusting Him and keep having reverence towards Him. All right, I also heard Beck, Alpha Alpha 5 Yankee.

Beck, please go ahead. now Roger I have a question on verse 6 it says I have hated those who regard useless idols and I'm confused with love thine enemy yeah great question Beck Beck brought up verse 6 I've hated them that regard lying vanities but I trust in the Lord and so Beck is saying okay so we're supposed to hate people and yet at the same time we're supposed to love people And so the idea here, Beck, is that we're not hating the people because they're people. We're hating the people because of the sinful behavior they have engaged in and the destructive actions.

Now, what is hatred? We have to define what hatred is. Hatred is a desire to see the destruction of another.

Okay? Hatred is a desire to see the destruction of another. Okay?

So hold that in your mind for a second there. What is love? Okay?

Love is a desire to draw the object of that love to oneself by removing the obstacles to intimacy. So God says, I've loved you with an everlasting love, therefore loving kindness have I drawn you. So it's the nature of love that always draws its object to itself, and if there's any barriers that are keeping us apart, We do what we can to remove those barriers so we can draw the object of that love to ourselves And of course when it says God so loved the world he sent his son Jesus to remove the barrier of sin that stood between us and God and and and thereby we could be close to him.

So let's take those two concepts and weld them together now, okay? So what I want to see destroyed, let's say you're an unsaved guy, Beck. I'll just use you as an example, okay?

So let's say Beck's an unsaved guy, and he's living this horrible, terrible life of blasphemy and hatred of God and persecution of Christians, right? Well, do I hate that? Yes, I do.

I hate the person who's doing that. I want to see that person destroyed, okay? I want to see the old Beck Destroyed.

I hate this guy who serves Satan And and is trying to drag people into hell and it was living a life of blasphemy against God, okay? I want to see that person destroyed But that doesn't mean that I want that person to go to hell. I What that means is I want that person to die, be born again, and be brought to new life.

And that's where the love comes in. Okay? So if any man be in Christ, he's a new creation.

The old things passed away. What is that? That's a death.

And all things have become new. What is that? That's a resurrection to life.

So yeah, I want the old back to be destroyed. But that doesn't mean I want him to stay there. I want him to be born again, changed into a brand new person, and turned into someone who loves Jesus.

So I want the old Beck to die. I want the new Beck to come to life by removing the barriers to intimacy. So I can hate you and love you at the same time.

I hate you in the sense, Beck, that I want to see that old man die. Okay? And I love you in that I want to see the new man be resurrected to life, made a new creature in Christ, and become somebody completely different than he was before through spiritual resurrection.

So that's how those two things work together. Beck, back to you. Roger, I totally understand now.

Sorry that I went with the physical body rather than the spiritual. Okay. Yeah, well, no worries.

You know, sometimes if God's not going to save somebody, it's better for them to be removed. You know, you think of somebody like Hitler, you know, who is killing six million Jews. If God isn't going to save him, then that guy needs to go.

So that the evil that he's doing will stop. And so while we love the unsaved in the sense that we want them to be saved, if they're not going to get saved, then the best thing is for them to be cut short so that they don't harm any more people, they don't blaspheme God anymore, and so they don't treasure up any more wrath for themselves. I mean, it's a mercy for a wicked person to die young rather than to die old because they haven't treasured up as much wrath.

And there are degrees of punishment in hell, right? And so because of that, you know, better for a wicked person to die young than to die old. so there's that back to you go ahead Roger okay well thank you for the explanation I really appreciate it one comment you did make and that was that sometimes things have to go awry or be bad and happen to us to bring us closer to God and I don't want to sound repetitive but this may be I can't remember everything that I've talked about in the last month or so but um Bert made a comment about how the devil was the one who got me in the accident.

And I think that it was God who saved me. And I think part of the reason why, it's all assumption on my part, because I really didn't know what God thinks or what's going on with that. with the angels or whatever.

But I think that if it was the devil that got me in this wreck, the reason why was because he really does not want me to put the song out that was given to me by the Holy Spirit. And I'm sorry that I say it over and over again, but that I really believe in this. and what he did was he tried to make me turn my back on God and say, "God, why did you let this happen to me?

I didn't deserve this, blah, blah, blah." And instead all he did was he strengthened me and made me want to do this even more and be more determined. And in the same sense, he's also made me appreciate more what I had, which was good vision and good hearing and an ability to do things. And right now, my main thing that I have in my heart is to get this song done and get this song out because it praises the Lord.

And I want everyone to know here, I appreciate your prayers, and I appreciate that you care about me. And I'm at a loss for words now. Alpha Alpha Phi Yankee.

Amen, Beck. Thank you for sharing that. That's not repetitive at all.

For many on this net, that'll be the first time they ever heard it. But yeah, you know, when you look at your situation, Beck, it's kind of like with Job, right? And so when you look at the situation with Job, did God permit and was God in control of all the terrible things that happened to Job?

Yes, he was. You know, God planned for this accident to happen, and in that sense, you know, this is God's working in your life. On the other hand, you know, Satan is involved in all injury and harm, because that's his goal is to kill and steal and destroy, right?

And so when you look at the story of Job, you see that, yes, Satan was involved, but also God was in control. And so, you know, what you say at the end of that is, you know, the Lord gave, the Lord took away, blessed be the name of the Lord. And that doesn't diminish the fact that Satan was attempting to bring harm, but it's also a recognition that God is in control.

So it's both ends. I mean, God meant it for good and Satan meant it for evil. What happens?

Satan always loses, right? Right. And so, as you said, more good has come out of this than would have ever come out before.

And so when Satan does his worst, it's counterproductive to his cause. And when God allows difficulty into our lives... It only serves his purposes, makes us more like Jesus, gives us stronger faith, and helps us to live a better life and be more glorifying to him.

You know, Job was way better off after he went through everything he went through than he ever was before. And so, yes, Satan means it for evil, Beck, but God meant it for good, and God always prevails, and Satan always fails. All right, Beck, thank you for sharing all of that.

I think that's really edifying and useful for us all. Okay, any other comments from anybody on this passage or anything that we've discussed? Please come now, it's your call time.

WB7VZL. Roger, WB7VZL, go ahead. Yeah, good morning, Bex.

I'm sure glad that you brought that question up. I was kind of, in a sense, working on that same concept. Before the Net, I was studying sin in the Church.

And the passage that would be, I think, helpful is how Paul, how Paul hates the sin but loves the sinner. But when they're combined in one person, it's 1 Corinthians chapter 5. 1 Corinthians chapter 5, where there was an incestual...

relationship within a household and they were members of the Corinthian church and how Paul deals with that touchy situation and he doesn't mince any words. So that will be helpful I when you hate the sin but love the sinner. And the recommendation is to cast the sinner out of the church so that ultimately he will repent, or that means turn, and respond in that discipline.

The other passage that came to mind when I was listening to the discussion is the most succinct... great controversy text from Christ himself and it's really a simple short text in John 10:10. The thief comes to steal, kill and destroy, but I have come to give life and that more abundantly.

That's always helpful to keep in mind to sort some of this out. Back to you, Max. Roger, thank you for bringing out those two passages.

They really do contribute to the conversation greatly. Yeah, 1 Corinthians 5 and verse 5, he says... deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, in order that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

So you've got both destruction and salvation. You've got both hatred and love working right there together in that same verse, in 1 Corinthians 5 and verse 5. Do we want to see sin and the old man destroyed?

You bet we do. we hate them do we want to see the soul saved and the new man come forth that loves God and glorifies God absolutely you know we love to see that happen and we love that person and so Satan comes to kill and steal and destroy Jesus comes that we might have life and have it more abundantly and so we recognize that there's this there's this kingdom of darkness We want to see it destroyed. There's this kingdom of light.

We want to see it flourish and grow and build. And so I'm thinking back of Saul of Tarsus, right? And he turned into the Apostle Paul, of course, and you remember the story on the road to Damascus, right?

And so we wanted the old Saul of Tarsus to die. We hated that guy. Why?

He's killing Christians. We need that guy destroyed. Well, he can be destroyed either by God just killing him and taking him off the earth, or he can be destroyed by conversion, by the old nature passing away and the new nature replacing it, so that now this person is a completely different person than he was before.

That old person is dead and gone and buried. And you've got this new person now who's preaching the gospel and writing half the New Testament. And so...

You know, when we pray for the destruction of the wicked, we want to see them saved. And so in salvation is the destruction of the wicked and their old nature and their old ways. And in conversion is that resurrection, the new life, a new person, and a whole new focus.

and behavior in the rest of their life. All right, Roger, thank you for that comment. Any other comments, please come down.

KM5S. Will, QM5F, please go ahead. Well, looking at the overall psalm, I've noticed that David complaining and praising God at the same time I'm going to ask him to come up.

Okay, I'm five minutes. Yeah, David is complaining and praising God at the same time, Will said. And that's true.

He's complaining about his situation. He's complaining about his enemies. But he's not complaining in a way of saying, "God, you're doing something wrong." He's complaining in such a way that, "God, I am in a terrible situation here." And so what he's doing is he's, yes, identifying all of his problems, so that he can cast those on God.

And so, you know, the Bible says, you know, cast your troubles on the Lord and he will sustain you. And that's what David is doing here. So that means identifying our troubles.

It means talking about how these troubles affect us And then asking God to deliver us from them So yeah, there's an element of complaining here I don't like this, I don't want this I want something different And then there's that element of faith God, please bring the remedy Only you can do that And I'm trusting in you to bring that to pass So that is the nature of prayer Will, thanks for that comment Alright, any other comments, please come down Well, let's focus here for a minute on verse 23 and the little bit of time we have left. Verse 23 says, Oh, love the Lord, all you his saints. For the Lord preserves the faithful and plentifully rewards the proud doer.

Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all you that hope in the Lord. And so the triumphant note that this psalm closes with tells us how that David's confidence in his God... causes him to cast his troubles on God with the result that now he has relief from God.

And even though he hasn't yet seen the answer, he's confident the answer will come because he knows God is a God who keeps his promises, right? So what should happen? We should love the Lord.

We should trust in the preservation of the Lord. We should continue to hope in the Lord, and what's God going to do? Well, He's going to take care of our enemies.

He's going to plentifully reward the proud doer. All those people that harmed you and seemed to get away with it, mark it down. They didn't get away with it.

God will deal with them. And then, you know, we have to maintain courage, which means that in the face of adversity, we stay strong. You know, we don't, in Hebrews it says, you know, lift up the hands that hang down and strengthen the feeble knees.

And the idea there is that we don't go to a quitter slump when things go bad for us. All right? We continue to rise up.

We continue to express faith and trust in God. We continue to cry out to him for justice. and for deliverance and for the defeat of those that are against God and against us.

And we continue to just cling to the Lord, love the Lord, put our faith and hope in the Lord, and go forward with life. So, you know, David sets a wonderful example, confidence in God, casting his trouble on God, and then having that peace from God that passes all understanding. Um, You know, verse 21, blessed be the Lord, for he has showed me his marvelous kindness in a strong city.

And, you know, as you look back on your life, you can say God has helped me so many times. Blessed be his name. He's going to help me now.

So don't stay in your haste. God doesn't care. No, he's just got you, as Kevin said, under pressure until the time comes that he's ready to bring deliverance and you're ready to be saved.
