and we'll talk about that in a minute, but before we get started looking at our psalm, we want to ask God's blessing on our Bible study together. Beck, Alpha Alpha Phi Yankee, could you please open in prayer for us today? Alpha Alpha Phi Yankee, let's go into the Lord in prayer.

Dear God, we all thank you for another day that we get to rise up and see the sun and your blessings upon this earth and upon us. We pray that the Bible study be in your graces as normal and that we all glean something from it that we can carry through the day and through our lives until we come join you in heaven. and this we play in Jesus' blessed name.

I really appreciate that. All right, WB7MX here. We are in Psalm 21 today.

Now, I wasn't here yesterday. Jeff, AK6OK, handled the net while I was... teaching class there in New Jersey.

And anyway, Psalm 20 was a prayer that David taught to his people to pray for him. You know, oftentimes we have prayer requests here and people tell us, how they want us to pray for them. Well, you know, this is David's prayer request to his people, Psalm 20.

This is how I want you to pray for me as the king. And so anyway, then Psalm 21 is a declaration of praise of answer. for that prayer that was given in Psalm 20 so 20 would be something that they would pray before they went out to battle and then Psalm 21 is a prayer that is offered in gratitude for how the battle went so what we have here is an expression of thanks gratitude to God for what he has done and Then of course for what he's going to do.

We have a change in in verb tense here from the past tense to the future tense So anyway a great prayers one for success for the king in battle and now praising God for giving that King success in battle Psalm 21 all right with that understanding I Jeff if you could go ahead and read for us Psalm 21 Jeff ak6. Okay, go ahead Well, thank you max good morning everybody thanks for putting up with me yesterday and thank you guys for all your help While max was was off teaching yesterday So let's read the NSB That's a psalm 21 starting with verse 1. I Lord, in your strength the king will be glad, and in your salvation how greatly he will rejoice.

You have given him his heart's desire, and you have not withheld the request of his lips. For you meet him with the blessings of good things. You set a crown of pure gold on his head.

He asked for life from you and you gave it to him. Length of days forever and after. His glory is great through your salvation.

Splendor and majesty you place on him. You make him joyful with the joy of your presence. For the king trusts in the Lord.

And through the faithfulness of the Most High, he will not be shaken. Your hand will find all your enemies. Your right hand will find those who hate you.

He will make them as a fiery oven in the time of your anger. The Lord will swell them up with his wrath. and fire will devour them.

You will eliminate their descendants from the earth and their children from among the sons of mankind. Though they intended evil against you and devised a plot, they will not succeed, for you will make them turn back. You will take aim at their faces with your bow strings and be exalted, Lord, in your strength.

Wow. I really appreciated your intro regarding the sequence of these two songs, Max. That helps my mind as we process these two.

And it certainly clarifies a lot of what we're hearing. And... I love this, thou hast given him his heart's desire, and thou hast not withheld the request of his lips.

for thou didst meet him with the blessings of good things, thou didst set a crown of fine gold on his head. Do you think he's talking about a lot of the spoils of going to battle? Or how would you interpret that, Max?

Over. Yeah, well, when it says you've given him his heart's desires there in verse 2, the heart's desires that he wanted is expressed in the previous psalm. Verse 1 of Psalm 20, the Lord hear thee in the day of trouble.

The name of the God of Jacob defend thee. Well, when he was in the trouble of battle, God did defend him, and he did succeed. Send thee help from the sanctuary, verse 2.

Strengthen thee out of Zion. So God from his presence would send help. That was the prayer.

remember all thy offerings and accept thy burnt sacrifices grant thee according to thine own heart and fulfill all thy counsel and of course David was a man after God's own heart so his heart was that God's will and work would be done God's people would be vindicated and God's glory would show forth that was what was in his heart because if you look at verse 5 we'll rejoice in thy salvation and in the name of our God we will set up our banners the Lord fulfill all thy petitions And verse 6, why no, the Lord saves his anointed. And we're trusting in God. Verse 7, our enemies are brought down and fallen.

We are risen. Save us, Lord. Well, that was the request.

And so when it says in verse 2, you've given him his heart's desire, his heart's desire was expressed in the previous psalm. So I think that's what's going on here. And when it talks about, you know, you set a crown of pure gold on his head, I think it's just referring to the position he has as king over Israel.

And the fact that God, of course, was the one who sent Samuel to anoint him to that position. He didn't ask for it. It was granted to him as a gift of grace.

and sovereign choice. And so he's looking back, Roger, over what he's asked for, how God has answered those prayers, the position he's been placed in by God as an act of his mercy and grace, and he's just overflowing with rejoicing as he's retrospectively looking at God's providences. Go ahead there, Roger.

Yeah, thank you. Thank you, Max. Appreciate that.

Back to you. All right, real good. Okay, any other comments on Psalm 21?

Yeah, just a couple of observations and you know, correct me if I'm wrong, just a couple of observations and thoughts here. Verse 4, I'm reading from the New King James here. "He asked life from you and you gave it to him, length of days forever and ever.

And my thought is that, you know, obviously, I think this is alluding to, you know, Jesus in his, you know, I guess him being the king and he will reign forever and ever. That's my first thought. And then verse 11, it says, for the intended evil against you.

they devised a plot which they are not able to perform. And that just kind of takes us back, or takes me back a little bit to Psalm, I think it's Psalm 2, verse 1, where it says, where it says, "Why do the heathens rage in a van who can imagine a vain thing?" It's kind of like, you know, they had all these plans and schemes to kill and crucify Jesus and get rid of him. But really that was just the beginning, or actually that was the whole plan, is that Jesus would just willingly go and sacrifice his life for us and our sins.

So I'm kind of just thinking, you know, they thought they had won. you know the double party had won but in actuality it was actually a victory over yeah Eric you're exactly correct is in fact are are not only about David but also about the son of David the Lord Jesus Christ every single for in this psalm without exception can be applied to Jesus. And so, of course, this had real life application to King David during his lifetime.

These are things he experienced. But also in them we see an echo of the life experiences of the Lord Jesus and the triumph that he had over all of his enemies. So, yeah, in verse 4, he asked life of thee and thou gavest him even length of days forever and ever.

And so, of course, God saved David physically in the battle. God saved David spiritually. Verse 5, his glory is great in thy salvation.

And so he's got this double reference here to, God, you saved me physically, you saved me eternally. And then, of course, the Lord Jesus, the same way, you know, he prayed physically. You remember in the Garden of Gethsemane, and God answered his prayers for strength to be able to go through and drink that cup that the Father gave to him.

And of course, he was raised from the dead. and have life forever and ever as a man. As a man, he died.

As a man, he was raised from the grave. As a man, he lives forever and ever. Of course, he's God also, right?

But this is Jesus speaking in his humanity, and every one of these verses can be applied to him. So it's really important for us, Eric, to do what you just did, and that is see Jesus in the Old Testament because he himself authorized us to do that when he says search the scriptures for in them you think you have eternal life and they are they which testify of me so good observation there Eric appreciate you bringing that out Eric is there anything you want to add go ahead No, no further comments. But, yeah, I just saw that, you know, in verse 4 and then in verse 11.

But, yeah, I can see how what you were saying, every verse in here can, you know, be applied to Jesus, you know, as a parallel kind of a thing. And so, anyway, that was just kind of all I had right there for now. And I appreciate the comments as well from you.

727, is it Al? Roger, please go ahead. Yeah, I really appreciated the discussion, you and Eric, about our Lord.

and I sense that in the book of Hebrews, which highlights the humanity of Jesus and His position as our High Priest, that He will retain that humanity forever and ever. As you have highlighted in verse 4, that He is the... the second Adam, and he will be forever bonded to us.

And that's why we can say he's our huge elder brother, so to speak. And we reign with him out of his amazing, amazing grace. That's how I see it.

Over. Roger, you are exactly correct. Theologically and also exegetically, Jesus is the God-man.

And when He became flesh and dwelt among us and we behold His glory, the glories of the only begotten and the Father, full of grace and truth there in John 1:14, He will have that humanity forever. Of course, He had it in the resurrection appearances, right? and he says, you know, touch me.

You know, I have flesh, I have blood. Here, give me something to eat. They gave him a piece of fish and a honeycomb, and he ate it before them.

And John emphasizes that in 1 John. He talks about us touching him and handling him, that he's not just some ghostly figure. He has that real human body, the same kind of human body we're going to have in our resurrection.

So yes, Jesus will have his humanity forever. And so many of the things that are said about him are a reference to his humanity. And of course, other things that are said about him are a reference to his deity.

And so once he took to himself humanity, he will have that dual nature, both a human and a divine nature in one person forever. So we get to heaven, we'll be able to talk to the man, Christ Jesus, and touch him and be touched by him. And what a blessing that will be that he took our nature onto himself, as it says in Hebrews chapter 2, verses 14 to 16, so that he might deliver us from the fear of death and destroy him.

namely Satan, who had power over death, and bring us into that state of eternal life. Roger, thanks for that comment. So back to you there, Roger.

Yeah, due to noise it's marginal for me too, likewise I'm sure. Well, Mark was highlighting some of the dialogue historically between the Jewish understanding of this psalm and the Christians highlighting it as a Messianic psalm. And so obviously there's a bit of a tension there.

of applying the Messianic Psalm to Jesus in the history of that. That's a very noisy interpretation of me not being able to hear Mark well. Maybe, is he getting into any other SDI?

Yeah, I was able to faintly hear him on Half Moon Bay, which is where I generally hear him best. Can anybody else provide us with a relay of what Mark was saying? Any other station?

Please come down with your call sign. All right, Mark. So anyway, as we understand it, by way of relay from Roger, you were talking about the Jewish understanding of this psalm versus the Christian understanding of it.

And that's a common problem, okay? the Jews don't see anything about Jesus in Isaiah 53, and we see him as clear as crystal there, right? The bottom line is is that the Old Testament must be interpreted in light of the New Testament because the New Testament is a divinely inspired interpretation of the Old Testament And so if we just had the Old Testament without the New we would not understand the Old Testament in the way that we are able to now because of we have the divinely inspired authors of the New Testament interpreting and explaining these Old Testament passages to us and for us.

So, yeah, obviously the Jews have rejected Jesus as their Messiah, so they're going to do everything they can to explain away his presence in any of these Psalms. All right, any other comments on Psalm 21? Please come down.

I'll try to capture the essence of what you're saying there. If you can text message me that, and I'll relay it on the radio. Okay, sometimes bad conditions are such we can hear Mark fine, and other times we can't.

Alright, let's get back to our psalm, Psalm 21. You know, here's the deal. When God answers our prayers, we we need to respond with thanksgiving.

You know, here on the West Coast Bible Study, you have quite the prayer list, right? And we pray about these things. And, you know, as God answers these prayers, we always try to return thanks to God for answering those prayers.

And that's what we see David doing here in Psalm 21. And so he is looking back at what God has done. God met him with blessings of goodness.

God preserved his life in battle. God blessed him with his presence. Verse 6, For thou hast made him most blessed forever.

Thou hast made him exceeding glad with thy countenance. So the idea there is that when someone's face is toward you, they have goodwill. If they turn their back on you, obviously they have ill will towards you.

And what David is saying is that God's face is towards him. God's smile is upon him. God's blessing has been given to him.

And he's just praising the Lord. Verse 7, for the king trusts in the Lord. And through the mercy of the Most High, he shall not be moved.

And so that's where our stability is. That's where our confidence is. about our circumstances and what's going to happen to us in the future.

We're trusting in the Lord, and God is going to show us His mercy, and He's going to give us stability, strength, and the notion that we won't be moved away from our faithfulness to Him anymore. and our walk with Him. And then we see that tremendous shift at verse 8, from the past tense to the future tense.

Verse 8, Thy right hand shall find out those that hate thee. So, you know, when you see the way God's taken care of you in the past, right, that gives you confidence regarding the future because God's consistent. He's the same yesterday, today, and forever.

And so as we reflect on his past goodnesses, we can count on his future goodness because... Alright, WB7MX here, Net Control for the West Coast, following the study. Quite the contrast here between what David has received and what his enemies have received.

Notice that it says in verse 2 of this psalm, "Thou hast given him his heart's desire, he hath not withheld the request of his lips." And then we have those who are opposing the people of God and also the will of God, as Eric brought out Psalm 2. Why did the heathen rage and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves against the Lord and against this anointed, saying, let us break their bands of thunder, let us cast their cords from us.

"He that sits in the heavens shall laugh." And so we see that same theme echoed here, where we have the outcome of the wicked, and then we have the outcome of the righteous. We have the outcome of the friends of God, and we have the outcomes of the enemies of God. And so it doesn't pay to be on the wrong side of God.

And we really see that in verses 9 and 10. It's a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the Lord, and we don't want to be in that category or status. So as we see here that they intended evil, David of course intended to praise worship and obedience all right other comments on this song please come out that would you be seven of these at L Roger please go ahead well since you've written 900 plus pages on the book of Revelation.

It does really remind me as I was reading it, reading it to the wrap up of the book of Revelation before the new heavens and the new earth. Over. Yeah, so, yeah, Revelation 20, it talks about people being cast into the lake of fire.

And then it talks about those who go into the new heavens and the new earth. What a contrast there, Roger, between the end of Revelation chapter 20, where there's that great judgment, and then there's the disposition of the wicked into the lake of And there's the disposition of the righteous into the new heavens and the new earth. What a contrast.

And so this is the difference between being under the wrath of God because of our rebellion and defiance and wicked sins against him and us being under the grace and mercy of God. because of our humility, our repentance, and our faith in Jesus as our Lord and Savior. And you know, when you look at those things, verse 13 really comes to mind here.

Psalm 21, 13, Be thou exalted, Lord, in thine own strength, so we sing and praise thy power. So when we look at the power of God to determine outcomes and to bring to pass his purposes, to protect his people and to bring judgment on his enemies, we realize that there is no higher power in the universe than God. And because of the exercise of that power in conjunction with God, his righteous character.

He never abuses that power or uses it wrongly. He is the one to be exalted. You know, a lot of people when they get power, they use it to serve themselves and to harm others.

But God, when he has power, he uses it to serve us and to bring blessing into our lives. and that's what David is seeing and that's what David is worshipping God with reference to I remember in Bible school we used to sing a song called Be Thou Exalted Forever and Ever what a wonderful hymn that was and what a joy it was to do what David is saying here, be thou exalted, Lord, for who you are and for what you have done. So singing is a wonderful way to respond to the blessings God brings into our lives.

And so, you know, I was talking with somebody the other day saying, you know, you're having some struggles, put some music on and listen to hymns and get your mind focused on the things above and the things in the scriptures and it really helps bring peace into one's life. Alright, any other comments on this passage? Please come down.

Roger, please go ahead. Yeah, your last comment. speaks of the tremendous accountability that the Scripture places upon the believer.

And the only way we can face that accountability and the judgment is through the foot of the cross. when we see the character of love displayed on the cross that is the only way we can face the accountability that we see pictured in the scriptures so yeah in order to face these fearful statements we have to know what the cross means of it amen yeah the fact that our sins were placed on Jesus He bore the wrath of God against them so that justice was satisfied regarding them. And now God is free to be just and the justifier of those who believe in Jesus.

So the good news is that substitute has borne the wrath of God against our sins. so that we might be delivered from them through faith in Him. And so the Bible says, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.

What are we saved from? We're saved from our sins and their consequences. So what are the consequences of sin?

The wrath of God. being against us for eternity and so what does it mean to be saved from sin it means to come into the smile and the blessing of God and to know his redemption his forgiveness and be given the gift of eternal life and living out that eternal life in the new heavens and the new earth that he's going to make out of the current heaven and earth when He returns the second time. So, yeah, you know, John 3:16, "God so loved the world, He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish but will have everlasting life." great promises of redemption and salvation.

And you know, what's interesting too is that all the things that the wicked plot, whether it's Satan and his demons or whether it's people who serve him, it always fails. Verse 11, they intended evil against us. They imagine a mischievous device.

but they are not able to perform it. And so God has Satan and his servants on a leash. They would do much more evil than they do, but God restrains them, and in that is a lot of our peace.

We know that... The God's enemies and our enemies are known to Him, they're under His control, they're limited in what they're able to do, and all they're allowed to do only serves for the salvation of His people, the glory of His name, the building of His kingdom, and the development of our character. Jesus, of course, learn maturity through suffering and so we do as well and as we come out on the other side of those sufferings by the grace of God with the help of God giving thanks to God for it then we are echoing in our lives the words of this psalm alright any other comments please come down Follow up?

Follow up, go ahead Roger. Yeah, I really, really like how it's your expression, "Satan is on a leash now after the crime." Well, he's always been, so to speak, allowing apparently his view of how the universe ought to be operated. He's always been on a, well, if you think you had a better idea, see.

And so the whole universe is, you know, we're kind of spectacles of how Satan, and his quote's been an idea that worked out without God. Anyway, I like that phrase, he's on a leash. Over.

Yeah, thank you for that, Roger. I just got an email from Mark, KJ7PVT, and he says here, I'm just reading you his email. He says, just some notes on how this passage was seen as a picture of the Messiah for a long time.

The Targum, which is the Chaldean paraphrase of the Old Testament, and the Talmud teach that the king mentioned in this psalm is the Messiah. Okay? And more evidence, Rabbi Solomon in AD 1040, there it's suggested that it should be given up because the Christians made use of this psalm as evidence that Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah.

Mark, thank you for those comments. And so Mark is drawing out of Jewish literature evidence that indeed even they understood that this Psalm 21 was a psalm that referred to the Messiah, to the Lord Jesus Christ. So, Mark, thank you for sending that email, and thank you for that information.

So, yes, as we read Psalm 21, we can see it's about Jesus. Jesus, show joy in thy strength, O Lord, and in thy salvation. How greatly shall he rejoice.

You have given Jesus his heart's desire. We can certainly pray for his family for sure. And yes, it's good to know that those antennas are picking up things that we don't. So yeah, if there's a way to lift him in on that, that would be great.

Our kind and gracious Father, we thank you so much for this passage. And indeed all of us, Father, what an encouragement they are to us personally, and what a prospect they set before us of what we shall experience when we're with the Lord Jesus. Father, we just want to pray today for Carol, KK7TPO, for healing of her lower back pain.

And Lord, we do pray for the control of her son-in-law, Chris, with diabetes, so he can have his back surgery on July 30th. And Lord, we're just so glad that our brother Tom, WW7T, checked in with us this morning. Father, he's had a rough go here.

Lord, he lost his wife, which is crushing. Father, he needs comfort and peace in the loneliness that is there. Lord, just surround him as long as your comfort lifts him up, Father, and draw him near.

And give him a soft sense of your presence. And then, Lord, he has some physical disabilities. He's in a wheelchair.

His legs are not working. He mentioned they're ice cold. Lord, I just pray that this final surgery that he has would be used by you to bring healing to his lower body.

And, Lord, I pray that he would be able to get up and walk and give praise to you. Lord, we know you healed a paralytic during his lifetime. And he got up and picked up his bed and walked.

And so Lord, we're just praying for Tom that you would be pleased to heal him and give him once again the ability to walk that he used to be able to have. Lord, we pray for Jerry, 87ER. We thank you that his sister-in-law is doing better, Toni.

and Lord we just pray that you continue to heal her from multiple myeloma. Father thank you that Becca's home, that she's healing up. Thank you for the good report of the doctors.

Lord we pray that his vision would become clear and sharp. And, Lord, we just pray that any remaining infection would be eliminated and, Lord, that his ear would heal up. Lord, just thank you for the mercy you've shown Quebec.

We ask that you would continue to show more. Lord, we pray for George, K2KJX, and the healing of his shoulder. And my pastor, Jeff Black, Lord, have mercy on him.

Raise him up from his severe ulcerative colitis. Father, we just want to continue to pray for Cody KS7TR's Uncle Doug. Lord, pray that he would be able to recover from his severe head injury.

Lord, as he continues to have surgery, Lord, continue to bring healing. And then our dear brother Keith WB7RKR, Lord, we just pray that you would give him wisdom and strength in the circumstances he's in. Lord, I pray that there would be peace, and I pray, Lord, that there would be just your presence in that home, resolving the challenges that are there and bringing direction and guidance.

Lord, I pray for Keith's health, Lord, that you would be pleased to heal him of his heart condition, help him to keep his balance, and help Ronnie to be calm and peaceful. Lord, I just pray that you would be there and that that home would know, you and your presence and your goodness. Father, we want to pray for our brother Darrell WB7AOT and the Midwest Bible Study.

Lord, may your good hand be upon those people and as they study the Word of God, use them, Father, to transform them into the image of Christ. Father, we continue to pray for Bailey and Joey. that their business would go well, their new construction business.

And Lord, Eric's mom is having a pacemaker installed July 15th. I pray that you would give her peace. I pray the procedure would be successful.

And Lord, I pray that she would know her heart functioning well. Lord, we continue to pray for Jay and his healing from prostate cancer. and for Harvey to have wisdom in managing his wife Karen and her health needs and also her Alzheimer's.

Father, we just want to pray for Ed Insex, X-O-H's brother-in-law, also named Ed. who's having a heart ablation on the 15th for the third time. Lord, I just pray that you would heal his heart.

We pray, Lord, that he and his wife would be able to sell their house and be able to complete this move. Lord, our dear brother Jerry, KG6J, is really stressed at work. He's having to work a ton of overtime because his boss, ordinarily would share that workload, has been facing her own cancer with battle.

Her own battle with cancer, I should say. And, Lord, we just ask that you would be pleased to HEAL RACHELLE OF HER CANCER, HELP HER TO BE ABLE TO BE BACK AT WORK AND TAKE SOME OF THE LOAD OFF JERRY'S SHOULDERS. GIVE JERRY MENTAL CLARITY.

GIVE HIM SHARPNESS OF MIND, AND MAY HE MAKE GOOD DECISIONS TODAY. AND THEN, LORD, WE PRAY FOR ROGER AS HE VISITS HIS STROKE VICTIM IN THE HOSPITAL. LORD, WE JUST ASK THAT YOU WOULD PLEASE GIVE ROGER WISDOM IN DEALING WITH THAT PERSON.
