We're going to open in prayer here in a minute. We're going to read a passage of scripture, and then we're going to talk about it. So, Sig, good to have you with us.

We generally get started right at about 6 o'clock thereabout. And we're always on 3975. We don't own the frequency, but that's the frequency we always show up on.

And God is gracious to give us a clear channel. Okay. and folks that stand by and allow us to use this frequency.

So thank you to all of you who stand by for the West Coast Bible Study Net. All right, we are in Psalm 6, and this psalm is often called the penitential psalm, one in which David is repenting of some sin. And while that may be the case, there's no internal evidence to prove it.

In this psalm, he never confesses any sin, he never mentions any sin, and he never asks for forgiveness. But what he does ask for is moderation and gentleness from God in his providential dealings with him. So what this is, is a cry of one who feels himself overwhelmed.

by God's providential dealings with him when God allows his enemies to gain such great advantages over him and thereby inflict grievous injuries upon him. So in the balance of his enemies, David sees the chastising, correcting rod of God because he knows the cause and control of his enemies. And David understood, and we need to understand as well, that the voice of reproof and the rod of chastisement are not employed by God exclusively for dealing with unrepentant sin.

In fact, most of the time, God's reproof and chastisement are not for unrepentant sin, but rather they're for humbling us directing us, restraining us, instructing us, maturing us. God has a whole bunch of purposes in bringing adversity into our lives. So we can't just immediately jump to the conclusion that, oh, I'm having some tough times here.

God must be upset with me. No, you're having some tough times here because God is maturing you and He's guiding you into a path you wouldn't choose for yourself, but nevertheless... is what you need in order to be able to grow to the next step, or be equipped for ministry, or be turned away from some potential sin you could get into in the future did you not go through this experience, or whatever.

So, in a word, rebuke and chastisement are primarily formative, not corrective, not punitive. Now, oftentimes, when you can cast judgment, it's very mild. It comes as a twinge of our conscience, or maybe a frustration in a task, or maybe a problem in a relationship.

But sometimes, It's very painful, almost overwhelming, and that was David's condition here. He's crying out to God for relief from his tribulations that are so great, he feels like he's going to die from them if he doesn't have relief from them. And so this struggle has lasted a while.

He's emotionally exhausted. He's physically ill. And out of that brokenness, he cries out to God and asks for mercy.

All right. That's a little background to our psalm. We're going to open our time in prayer, and then we're going to read the psalm.

And so, Roger, WB7BZL, if you could read, if you could open a prayer for us today, I'd sure appreciate that. Go ahead there, Roger. Heavenly Father.

Uh... you for bringing us together around your holy word. We are moved as we have pondered even already through this psalm and the introduction to this psalm.

And I, Lord, I see that it was actually accompanied by string instruments. And as your servant gave it, who in a sense is a significant portrayal of our Lord and Savior. Give us your Holy Spirit again to be able to identify with the emotions that we see expressed here.

And Pastor, again, even our experience with Job, we are so moved and have the privilege of pondering these for these few minutes this morning. Thank you for leading us on this new day. In Jesus' name, amen.

Kevin, please go ahead. I'll get the ball rolling a little bit. Yeah, good introduction, Max.

You covered some very important points with this. You know, this is a penitential psalm, the first of about, I think, seven identified in the various psalms here. And it's one kind of reminiscent, too, of some of the feelings that Job felt here.

But first of all, as he, David, well, let's talk about the instrument first. I'm glad... Roger, you mentioned that.

The instrument, from what I understand, is an eight-stringed instrument that has kind of low tones to it, maybe like a cello or a viola. But anyway, it's clearly a solemn instrument. slow kind of song and prayer if you will and the way David introduces himself here and his appeal to God is for God's mercy he's not denying in this case that he is deserving of discipline but he is pleading to God because of his mercy as you pointed out Max that he is really feels at the end of his rope and we see here that God is exercising again his silence And, you know, there will be periods of time, if you haven't experienced it already, I'm sure you will in your life where you just feel quite alone.

You feel that God is not listening, that God is not responding. And, you know, here he is certainly spiritually listening. But he's also clearly physically ill.

And what a time to not hear from God, to feel alone, to feel isolated. Now, David knows and we know that we're never completely alone, even in God's silence. But it's almost more than David can bear here.

And we see others that have experienced this silence from God. Of course, we saw it in Job 23, verse 3. Job expresses this silence from God.

In Lamentations, Jeremiah experienced this. See in chapter 3 and verse 8, Jesus on the cross. experienced this failing of abandonment no he's make it clear god that did not abandon any of them the feeling of being alone and the silence from god in matthew 26 27 verse 46 where jesus expresses that and but yet God is present and the way David deals with this is he appeals to God's loving kindness.

What a great attribute of God is His loving kindness. HE KNOWS THAT THAT IS A CHARACTER OF GOD, AND HE'S PRAYING AND APPEALING TO THAT LOVING KINDNESS OF GOD, THAT SAME GRACE THAT HAS BROUGHT HIM THROUGH MANY OF TRIAL BEFORE, THAT SAME GRACE THAT HE KNOWS GOD POSSESSES. HE'S APPEALING TO GOD TO EXERCISE THAT SAME GRACE, NOT BECAUSE DAVID DESERVES IT, BECAUSE OF WHO GOD IS, that he would extend that mercy, that loving kindness, that grace to him once again.

KB7 is that extent. Yeah, Kevin, great comment. Thank you so much for that.

Yeah, you know, when we're in the midst of distress, it seems like that, you know, we ask ourselves, where is God? Why the silence? And as you said, many people have struggled with this issue of the silence of God.

in that they are in distress. They've been in it for a while. They feel completely overwhelmed by it.

They're crying out to God, and yet it seems like there's no answer. There's just violence. And so when we are in that situation, that's where faith comes in, faith in the promises, faith in the God who sent his son to die for us, If he has given us his son to redeem us, certainly he loves us, certainly he cares for us, and certainly he's aware of what our situation is and is managing it for our good.

And so, yeah, you know... During those times, we've got to just rest on the promises and rest on the character of God. Now, Kevin, you brought out his loving kindness, and that's a really important thing for us to reflect on.

In Romans 8, it says, what can separate us from the love of God? And the answer is nothing can. It says if God be for us, who can be against us?

And we know that God's going to work all things together for good. We know he's going to supply all of our needs according to his riches in Christ Jesus. We know that he that has begun a good work in us will continue to perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.

And over and over again, we have these promises. that God makes. And we have to interpret our circumstances in light of the promises.

We don't interpret the promises in light of our circumstances. So we start with the promises, the rock-solid foundation upon which we interpret and understand our circumstances. And then we just have to wait.

You know, Isaiah 40, they who wait on the Lord will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings and eagles. They shall run and not be weary anymore.

They shall walk and not be faint. They shall run and not be weary. And so, yes, having that patience, and that's what David is doing here.

He's crying out to God, and he's saying, Lord, I need some help. And what's interesting to me is that you look at verse 8. And after this, verses 1 to 7, we have David's cry for mercy.

Then we have David's confidence in God's answer. Notice verse 8. Depart from me, all you workers of iniquity, for the Lord has heard the voice of my weeping.

And so it's while he's praying. that he suddenly becomes flooded with the assurance that God is there, God is hearing, and God is going to do it. And so while this psalm opens with a cry of anguish, it closes with an expression of confidence.

And that's what prayer does. When we cast our burden on the Lord, what happens? He sustains us.

He will never suffer the right to continue to do that. Sometimes the relief we need from the circumstances we're in is not so much a change of circumstance, but an inward peace about that circumstance that comes to us when we pray. It reminds me of that passage, Kevin, in Philippians where it says, Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving that you request to me, do as God says, with God.

that passes all understanding will fill your heart and mind. And so I think that's the transition we see here, is he's appealing to the loving kindness of God, and then his soul is flooded with that inward peace and assurance that, yes, God does love me, God is kind, God is going to deliver me, and my enemies, who are God's enemies, will go down to defeat. Kevin, great comment there.

Yes, just a follow-up from what you said yesterday in Psalm 5, the very first three verses, he was crying out for God to listen to him. Here in the last two verse well verse 8 and 9 he indicates that he understands that or knows that God did hear him and heard his supplications and heard received his prayers. I just note here in front of us.

Yeah well good observation. Yeah well we're pointing out yesterday in Psalm 5 we were looking at that and notice the first couple of verses. Give ear to my words O Lord consider my meditations.

hearken to the voice of my cry my king my god friend of thee will i pray my voice shalt thou hear in the morning oh lord in the morning i direct my prayer to thee and look up that was quite an introduction to prayer right and he's going on a little bit there about lord please hear my prayer and then will is pointing out here in psalm 6 that he had the assurance god did hear his prayer and so uh You know, prayer is not an exercise in futility. It's an exercise in communication in which we talk to God about our problems and we receive from God sometimes external help, but we always receive internal help. And that internal help is what we need most.

We need that peace that passes all understanding. We need to remind ourselves of who God is, that he's loving, that he's kind, as Kevin pointed out, his loving kindness. We need to be reminded that he sent his son to die for me, that he's adopted me as his child.

He's transformed me by his grace. He's working things together for my good. And he's continuing that good work which he's begun in me.

No one can pluck me out of his hand. And we reassure ourselves with all of those promises of God. And then that peace comes when we believe, as Will says, by exercising faith in those promises.

All right. Well, great comment. Thank you for that.

Go ahead. Yes. Isn't it lovely when you see David in all of his grief, and he does this throughout the psalm, where there is a turnaround, always a turnaround.

Get down to verse 7, 8 down there. Well, let's see, let's get further than that. Department, for me, all you workers of iniquity, the Lord has heard the voice of my weeping and so forth.

and then here's the turnaround at 9:00 the Lord has heard my supplication the Lord will receive my prayer let all the enemies be ashamed and greatly troubled let them turn back and be ashamed suddenly I love the one with that and I don't know how he says it but years however I or the word "but," but he gets through whatever his passage is and he says, "However, everything's okay." So, love to see this. Yeah, copy that. And well said.

And you're exactly right. We see that over and over again in the Psalms where Jesus is stressed, David turns to God, David prays to God, and there's a huge turnaround in his attitude, in his perspective, in his assurance, in his confidence, in his peace. And that's what prayer does.

Prayer reorients our perspective because now instead of looking horizontally at all the people and all the problems, we're looking vertically at God and we recognize his sovereignty. that he is in control of all of this. We recognize his power.

He can turn it around on any wishes. We recognize, as Kevin said, his loving kindness, that his thoughts towards us are thoughts of peace and not of harm. People may mean it for evil, but God means it for good.

And so as we get that perspective right on who God is, what God has done and what God has promised and what the future certainly holds, then that peace comes in the midst of the turmoil. So this turnaround, Jeff, you're talking about happens when people exercise faith in God, his character, his promises, and especially his son, Jesus Christ. and we come away with peace, not because our circumstances have changed, but because our perspective on who is managing those circumstances has changed, and we exercise faith in those promises, knowing the promises will be kept in due time.

And a lot of that's... and just having patience with God and confidence in God that in his time and in his way, he's going to fix this. And so David hadn't yet seen any relief, but what he did see is the fact that God was going to provide relief in the future because he had promised to do so.

Roger, WB7VZL, please go ahead. Yeah, thank you very much for the comments and patience and knowing that ultimately the promises of God will never fail. But he's kind of in between.

You know, he's been anointed, if I recall, you know, to be king. And he's being chased all around by another king that has been anointed. He's a fugitive.

And basically, you know, how long is this going to happen? I'm between. I'm between the anointing, between the anointing.

And I've kind of seen this as what some of the saints of the early church went through when they thought that Jesus was going to come back soon. And then, like in the Testimonian church, they said, "Wow, he's going to come back soon." you He promised him, and has to say, hang in there, you know, the promises of God are sure, but not all things have been fulfilled. There's prophetic aspects that need to be taken care of first.

But yeah, the in between, that's the tough time between what's easy. A fugitive has to be in the right position. And when he finally becomes king, it doesn't mean he doesn't have any problems after that, but in between.

Over. Yeah, Roger, thank you for bringing out the concept of in between. That is such an important biblical concept.

And you know, one of the reasons why we have such a big Bible, and one of the reasons why it's filled with so many stories of people's lives and God's dealings in their lives, is to provide us with an example of how to manage the in-between. The in-between is the in-between between the promise that's given and then the fulfillment and the accomplishment of that promise. And, you know, we tend to think, well, if I put a quarter in the vending machine and hit the button, I should get the item out the bottom.

you know, in just a second or two. And we tend to think prayer is that way. It's like a vending machine, right?

You throw up a prayer to God, and you say amen, and you turn around, and the prayer is answered. It doesn't work that way. Oftentimes there are long periods of time between the promise and the fulfillment.

That's the in-between. And the virtue that we have to exercise during that in-between is faith and patience and persevering and doing the right thing ourselves until that promise is fulfilled in God's time and in God's way. And, you know, I think for all of us, I mean, you know, well, let me just go to this.

When we look at the biblical stories, we look at the life of Joseph, all right? His in-between lasted anywhere from 17 to 20 years. From the time he was given the dream, you know, that he was going to be ruler over his mother, father, and brethren, and the time that actually was accomplished, well, that was a long time, and there was a lot of difficulty.

He got sold into Egypt, he got betrayed by Potiphar's wife, he got thrown into jail, he got forgotten by the baker and the butler. And then finally, God kept the promise, and there he was, sitting on the throne. His father and his brethren came down.

They all bowed to him. But that took a long time. And when you look at your own life, you can see that...

things, you know, went sideways, you prayed, and maybe it was ten years before God brought that sideways situation around and resolved it or brought something better to pass than you could have ever imagined because of it. And so that's the difference between those who have faith and those who don't. If people of faith are willing to be patient, with that in-between time that sometimes goes on and on.

And as you pointed out, Roger, he says here in verse 3, Oh Lord, how long? My soul is sore vexed. I'm in a state of distress.

and Lord, I'd like you to fix this yesterday. And Lord's saying, you know, I think we're going to let you be chased around for another three or four years before we actually put you on the throne. The blessing of that is we almost gave it.

What? What? What the hell?

... The point is to throw the towel at this thing and what I want. I want the point to throw the towel.

Oh, you know what would that be? Oh, oh, lucky car. The point, the point is true.

Well, then we'll put it on it. Okay. Now, let's put it in position.

Thank you. You know, it's quite cold up there. You heard what you heard, eh, Tony?

You know, that is the thing, okay? We've never thought, what is God doing? Well, the answer is, and you'll point that answer, working things together for good.

So we're saying, what is the good? That is working things together for good. Oh, yeah.

And so, if you look at all of the 28, and since we know all things work together for good, to then the whole thing works in a bad cold according to its purpose, as proposed to Christian. And then verse 29 is a very nice verse, told as what it's going to be in, they work in all things together for good. It says, "Doing this will make you "use this pronouncement of a noun narrative "to be conformed to the image of God." So that's the good.

The God is working all things together. Yeah. And we would be always together.

Both for future, in our thinking, in our speech, and in our conduct. Yeah. The card here is a card.

The card is a kingdom of God, but it is no position, nor power, nor power. No. The currency of the King goes in a group of jesus.

In a group of jesus. Well, which one you want, the one you want, choose the people you want. Oh, you don't want?

economic system, if you will, works probably different from the world. The world makes a great gain of your income. And yet, the world has a lot of other contentment that's going to gain.

And so, if we're closely and look at there, both of which are accomplished in the course of the food and the coal. So that's what we have here. To move this we have a treasure chest.

This we can use to create a character. This is a good little toy fight. So all of the pain and sorrows and difficulties and struggles we've gone through are all given to us by a loving God.

with managing the level of distress in the water. At the point and to the degree that we become all white-tipped, and of course the whole redemption, right? And first to attack.

When he appears, we shall be white-tipped. We shall take him at the end. This vocal wants to be like you and it's in the voice.

So it means it's fast and over. But towards there it's the direction. And we can pick up as always the world.

If you're pretty smart, Flop, you probably won't be shy. They can't help me. The only question they are on, the only extra credit they want to leave on the call is that they want you to run.

So which is the whole call? The whole call is that they want to thank you for letting you know what the call is. That's a stretch working all things together.

Oh, yeah. This is 2-2-3-7-8. The call is to load the passageway to build your corporate.

Oh, maybe I'm in running air. Watch your place, Quint. Well, we were talking about the character of God.

Yeah, that. That's just amazing. So, you know, that's a very good idea.

Could be up to two or three, but it's only ten feet. Yeah, I'm not saying it's enough. But then, I was thinking of It's a patient's good mercy that he's trained for.

He is a celebrity. And he has a real voice. He's a friend of mine.

He's a champion. He's a great man. He's a great man.

And he is a great one. With all of his favorite things. He's a great man.

Oh, you must have. Oh, there he is. That was an opportunity.

Oh, an opportunity to tell you. Yes, I told you. It's him.

David is the spirit control template of the demonic heart. The most insane that was is late in the war. I mean, this is just what he demonstrated in the real world.

I am the good old patient, and the simple boy, the famous patient. The good old patient, the old boy, the old boy, the old boy. Hey, Roger, and you bring out such a cool point there.

Oh, yeah. Don't take yourself for short, dude. Take it yourself.

Go to your difficult man, and earn our folks. What would you do? So, you know, David could have killed four on one occasion.

Oh, that would have been the end of him being chased around and fighting and living his life for the great. But he recognized that wasn't going well and that wasn't going the way. And what to do with all of the situation he's in.

And so we can, you know, pay with our circle of family. There are definitely... Uh, be tempted to.

Uh, take advantage of the opportunity. The numbers don't run. You're in the financial district?

You can call Uncle Ben, Gray. Oh, that's not a good point. Uh, we pray.

We look for a job. Maybe good. And someone to show mercy on.

And a life of fun. Uh, in order to improve and improve our situation, if I walk, I am in a quite good mood, right? Uh, and then in the other way of the day, okay, uh, if I steal or if I lie or if I kill, Okay, me too, is that acceptable?

Uh, can you hear me? Kevin, please come in. Yeah, wonderful comments and wonderful thoughts.

I can't be so unaccented. One of the things that, just reflecting on here, in the very first, first, just to back up a little bit, David really destroys two biological errors. And so we have number one, that David circumstances he's dealing with are there because of social disciplining you.

But he was calling for guns. Measured response and the discipline. I mean, the suffering that he was going through because of that discipline.

Which brings me to the other point that is the logical error that has destroyed him in the first verse too.
