Will, KELOLAND 5 Foxtrot, please go ahead and open in prayer for us. KM5F, gracious Heavenly Father, we thank you for this day and ask for many blessings upon it. Lord, we just want to lift up Carol today as she is not feeling very well.

And just pray that you would bless her and her health issues, Lord. We thank you for this West Coast Bible study, Lord, and for the prayer time that we have both at the start and at the end, which is the way we should start our day, Lord. We just pray as we put on our armor each and every morning.

Lord, we just thank you for those that have health issues, Lord, and for those caregivers, Lord. We just lift them up. We pray that you would keep the evil ones out of our lives.

Ask for your guidance and for your working in our lives as we witness to others, that we may bring others to you. In Jesus' precious name we pray. Amen.

We are in Psalm 5 today, and we're going to ask Jerry AE7ER to go ahead and read for us. Jerry, if you could read for us please Psalm 5, go ahead. Give ear to my words, O Lord, and serve my groaning.

Hear the sound of my cry for help, my King, and my God. For you I pray. In the morning, O Lord, you will hear my voice.

In the morning I will order my prayer to you, who verily watch. For you are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness. No evil dwells with you.

The boastful shall not stand before your eyes. You think all to do iniquity. You destroy those who take falsehood.

The Lord abhors the man of bloodshed and deceit. Let out from me, and by your abundant love and kindness, I will enter into your house. At your holy temple, I will bow in reverence to you.

O Lord, lead me in your righteousness, because of my faith. Make your way straight before me. There is nothing reliable in what they say.

Roger. Please go ahead. Well, I'm not quite awake yet, but it seems like...

I was hearing in verse 9 some of the descriptions of how we are in and of ourselves in Romans 3, the first part of Romans 3, and how we're, like I say, just in and of ourselves, we're that's horrible, but I don't see a reference to that on the side margins. But anyway, it reminded me of the dire straits that we are at before the wonderful righteousness of God appears. Over.

Yeah, and you're exactly right, Roger. Verse 9 of Psalm 5 is quoted in Romans 3 and verse 13. Romans 3 and verse 13 says regarding the unsaved, their throat is an open sepulcher.

It's like an open grave. And so it says here in verse 9 of Psalm 5, there's no faithfulness in their mouth. The inward part is very wickedness.

Their throat is an open sepulcher. They flatter with their tongues. So a sepulcher, of course, is a grave, right?

And so they used to bury people in little caves. Our Lord Jesus was buried in a cave, a tomb hewn out of the rock. or they would bury them in the ground in any of it you remember that when the time came to raise Lazarus from the grave right he Jesus said roll the stone away and and Martha says Lord by this time he thinks he's been dead four days you know nevertheless I'll do it so the whole idea of an open grave was just a horrible, horrible prospect, both visually and also in terms of the smell.

And to use this powerful of a metaphor to describe the ungodly and how they stink in the eyes of God and how deformed morally and spiritually they are, in the sight of God shows the profound impact that sin has on the human condition and how God views those who are defiled by sin, who have been corrupted by sin. And, you know, elsewhere he says to those who say they're holier than others, he says these are a stench in my nostrils. and smoke in my nose.

So, very powerful metaphor there, Roger. Back to you. Well, thank you for that confirmation.

I've decided to just side reference he's not going toward the... the newer testament it's not going forward in the bible you have to go to Romans 3 and then pick up Psalm 5 that way as you see it quoted that I guess that's the intention but anyway I was looking looking for Romans 3 of this margin anyway thank you for that confirmation it sure sounded familiar over yeah you bet it is there and so what's happening there in Romans 3 10 and following is the description of human depravity and the helplessness and inability that people are in, as well as the defilement that they are in as a result of sin, and why they need a Savior. You know, in Romans chapter 1, 2, and the first part of chapter 3, Paul makes a powerful case for the need for salvation.

by describing the condition of the Gentiles, the condition of the Jews, and then, of course, the condition of all men. There's none righteous, no, not one. And so what Paul does is he constantly reaches into the Old Testament and draws out passages like this.

in order to reinforce and express the point that he's trying to make in the New Testament as he writes under the inspiration of the Spirit. And one would expect that if you're writing or operating under the influence of the Holy Spirit, you're going to be referring a great deal to the Scriptures, which the Holy Spirit himself inspired. And that's what Paul is doing here.

All right, Roger, thank you for making that connection. between our psalm and the New Testament, particularly Romans chapter 3 and verse 13. All right, any other comments on this passage?

Yeah, KB7 Zed XM. Well, I really like Roger. and I know you've made the point before how you refer to as the newer testament and but that is true anyway and along with it I would just point out too as in Romans 3 where it is declared that our righteousness is as a filthy rags well this are the filthy rags of the dead uh you know of the dead man's uh clothes if you will you know of the shroud that that person is wrapped in so as that body decays it leaves a pretty ugly image uh in our minds that our righteousness would be that far removed from the holiness of god and paul and um And David really kind of makes this contrast in this text here.

This is a powerful, I think, early morning prayer. I think there's a few things that stand out to me. One is the purposeful nature of setting time aside starting the day early in prayer.

PURPOSING THAT SPECIFIC TIME. WE KNOW THAT WE SAW DAVID IN THE LAST PSALM WITH AN EVENING PRAYER. BUT HERE WE SEE AN EARLY MORNING PRAYER, DEVOTED DIRECTLY BETWEEN EARNED TIME TO HAVE COMMUNION WITH GOD AND PRAYER.

And I think this is something that's so valuable to us as an opportunity. And I don't know, I'm not as consistent as I would like to be sometimes with this, although I'm getting better. I know there are some that just have been, noted through the years to be so faithful.

Leonard Ravenhill spent a lot of his time writing about, well, revival, but about prayer as well. He cited a man that would start his days in the morning and pray for an hour or two on his knees on an old wooden floor. And when he died, they basically showed the marks of that prayer.

Others known as "Tamilese." I know Martin Luther was known to spend two or three hours a day in purposeful prayer. My dear wife, she gets up, she goes to bed very early. She's usually asleep by 7:00 or 7:30 in the evening.

But she's up at 3:00 every morning and praying for at least an hour. before the Sun comes up and praise and she's always done that with those that she's raised in her life in her home she's always after she prays for a good hour to show awake the household up and then pray together and so purposeful prayer is such an important component and support and privilege but then I think one quickly My other point that we see here with David, as he points out and he prays for those of the world around us and those that are evildoers, if you will, which is pretty much all out there, those that will speak eloquently but have evil in their heart, those that have, you know, just wickedness of different levels. and he prays for the protection from them.

But you think, how could David, such a sinner, someone that has had an affair with a married woman and then kills her husband, how could someone like that approach God? Right. Well, we see that answer in verse 7.

And by appealing to God's mercies and God's righteousness, that he appeals to God for that access. And, of course, we know that it's because of a repentant heart of David's. And God always responds to a repentant heart.

KV7, is that acceptable? Yeah, you know, Kevin, you make a couple of really good points there. Thank you for that.

First of all, let's talk about morning prayer. Of course, Kevin's referring to verse 3, My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord, in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up. And so basically we need to start the day with God.

When we first wake up, you know, we first focus on our Heavenly Father, And the blessing of bringing us through a night safely. I know many people who have died in their sleep. And it's a great mercy of God to awaken.

And then, you know, to pray about the needs of the day that lie ahead of us. And to pray about the people that we're interacting with. Maybe a husband, wife, children.

neighbors church members those on the west coast of Boston you know you wake up in the morning first thing and you pray for Carol and back and and those like that are struggling with physical maladies that are just ongoing and more give them a good day today you know Kevin talked about the length of time people pray And you know, it's wonderful that people can spend extended time in prayer. But even a few moments in prayer is certainly valid and it's certainly appropriate. Sometimes when the alarm goes off we've got to get up and go to work.

We can't spend an hour in prayer. But one of the things that I try to do is every day I get dressed, right? Every one of us, every day we get up and we get dressed.

And so that's, when you tie your prayer time to something you do every single day without exception, then you always remember to pray. And so as I'm dressing, I'm silently praying to the Lord, clothe me in your righteousness, clothe me in your armor. Help me, Father, today to represent you well.

to all of those around me. So I find that when I'm struggling with a spiritual discipline, if I can tie it to something I do every single day without exception, then I tend to get that discipline done. For example, I eat dinner every day without exception.

And so what we always did is we tied family Bible time to dinner. And so as soon as dinner was over, we all went in the living room, we sat down, we had family Bible time. And so it was a daily thing you do every day becomes a trigger then to tie to that spiritual discipline.

So anyway, a little suggestion there. And Kevin, I really appreciate you pointing out those. who were real prayer warriors because prayer is a real ministry.

And there are an endless number of things to pray for. There's an endless number of people to pray for. And to use that as a ministry is a wonderful thing, especially as we age.

Maybe we're not able to physically minister the way we used to. Maybe we're, you know, in bed, but we can always pray. So thanks for pointing that out, Kevin.

The second thing you pointed out here is that the enemies that David has here, the descriptions are quite robust as to these people he's dealing with. In verse 4, he talks about them being wicked and evil. In verse 5, he talks about them being boastful and foolish and workers of iniquity.

In verse 6, he talks about them being liars and being bloody and deceitful. Bloody means they go around killing people. Deceitful, of course, is lying.

And then he talks about, verse 9, there's no faithfulness in their mouths. their inward parts are wickedness, their throats an open sepulchre. And so that's quite the description, which then leads us to verse 10.

Destroy them, O God, let them fall by their own counsels, cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions. for they have rebelled against thee. Now, you know, you might think, verse 10, man, that's a little harsh.

Why isn't he praying for their salvation? Well, you know, that's an issue that comes up quite frequently in the scriptures. And so here are people...

who have willfully committed a multitude of transgressions. Here are people who have knowingly and defiantly rebelled against God. They are hardened, they're defiant, they're rebellious, they're implacable enemies of the people of God and work for their destructions.

And so here are people who have not only repeatedly rejected the gospel, but they're actively persecuting Christians, and they're actively and knowingly blaspheming God. When a person gets to that point... then there's a basis for a cry for justice, a plea for God to vindicate His holiness and His law and His righteousness in bringing judgment on those who, number one, viciously defy Him, and number two, actively work at destroying His people.

And so when people have spurned God's gracious invitations for salvation and reconciliation, When they continue on in implacable enmity against God and his people, then it's a righteous thing to pray for their destruction so that their evil may be brought to a halt, because it appears it won't be brought to a halt by conversion. All right, so any comments on anything Kevin said, I said, or any other passage in the psalm, please come down to your call sign. KM5F.

Go ahead there, Will. Yeah, I noted in the first three verses, three times, out of the 12 verses, three times he asked God to hear him or listen in verse... One, he says, give ear to my words.

And two, he says, heed the sound of my cry. And then three, he says, you will hear my voice. So it's interesting that he spends a lot of time asking God to listen to his prayer.

KM5S. You know, Will, I'm glad you pointed that out. I thought Will was pointing out that Three times he asked God to hear his prayer.

He's quite intense about that. And, Will, I think that manifests a couple of things. Number one, God's not obligated to listen to us at all.

Number two, we are unworthy to come into his presence. And so, number three, there is this extended pleading for God to graciously condescend to hear us and answer our prayer. These kind of expressions show that we're not in a position to be demanding anything out of God.

Number two, God doesn't owe anything to us. And if God does answer our prayer, it's a gracious condescension of mercy and grace on his part. And so what David is doing here, Will, is he's taking a position of humility before God.

And you know, the Bible says that God gives grace to the humble while he resists the proud. And so a posture of humility and of meekness and of imploring, recognizing that we are poor in spirit and have nothing to bring to God or offer God, defeats us. And I think David really manifests that in this language he uses and the posture he takes as he comes before the Lord.

I've got to you, Will. KM5S, go ahead. My guess is if we become humble in asking, our prayers might have more effect.

KM5S. Amen. Well said.

Humility brings answers to prayer. Pride brings only silence. So, Will, thanks for pointing out that posture of humility.

And, you know, you see that. You know, Daniel falling on his face before the Lord, crying out. The constant manifestations of humility, of contrition.

of recognition that I deserve nothing, God owes me nothing, and yet God, please have mercy. So, yes, the attitude of prayer here is brought out. It is a powerful lesson for all of us.

Does that make sense, follow-up? okay i'm sorry i had my radio turned down i heard a voice voice come again uh kb7 that extended just following okay kevin go ahead please well into that yeah i think you're absolutely right in that and that's good to observe because we certainly must come through god with humility and in my point before it wasn't so much in the quantity of prayer but the quality that where our heart is in relation. Now, here we see clearly David is greatly burdened by those.

When you're in a leadership position, even in the corporate world, we see how people backstab each other and malign one another. and you know so discord and what have you to to to climb the corporate ladder sometimes well certainly as king i'm sure that was on a magnified scale of those around him and those that were less than honorable here and we should reflect it but i think one of the points i wanted to make on on that on the early morning prayer. And I don't accept the fact, well, because if you have a job and work, that is an excuse.

My wife, she had to travel an hour and a half when she lived in Africa there. a city of 21 million. It took her an hour and a half to get to work each day and an hour and a half to get back from work.

She taught a long day of school. She taught classes of 50 high school or middle age, from junior high to high school students. over 500 per week and she taught a full day but yet she still purposed in her heart it was her priority and she had planned in her day around that priority of having that particular prayer time and she did it also through the day and at night too But I'm just saying, so yeah, it's what we purpose now.

It's not the quantity, and that wasn't my point. But our heart, and that's what I really, really, I think is special about our Bible study. We begin with that prayer.

And as we open God's Word and we look into it and we study. And we have the privilege here of... OPENING, CLOSING THEIR PRAYER AND LIFTING THOSE UP WITH NEEDS AND BURDENS THAT WE CAN PRAY FOR.

AND THEN WE DO THAT THROUGHOUT THE DAY AS WE PRAY, YOU KNOW, AS WE GO THROUGH THE DAY THAT WE PRAY FOR, WE'RE REMINDED OF DURING OUR DAY. THIS PRAYER DOESN'T ENCAPSULATE IT SO MUCH, BUT I THINK ONE OF THE WONDERFUL PRAYERS IS A PRAYER OF GRATITUDE, OF GIVING THANKS. AND THAT'S A WONDERFUL DAY TO both end and start our day.

But here we see a prayer of raw need and emotion from David. And this is, again, I think, as we saw in Job, God prefers honest communication. It's not about our eloquent speech.

It's not like the... publicans that we read about in the newer testament that uh like to be seen for their for their many words and and their beautiful prayers it's about our heartfelt communication with god in humility and uh depending on god's mercies to address that and and so anyway i think that's an excellent point you made there max on that kb7 is that a chance Yeah, Kevin, appreciate the emphasis on scheduling time for prayer. If we don't make time for prayer, we don't do it.

And it's because there's so many things that we can do where we can actually see the results, right? Get up and make breakfast. Well, you can see there's food on the table, right?

You get up and pray for 20 minutes and did anything happen, right? And, of course, we know something did happen because we believe by faith the promises of God. that the effectual fervor of prayer of a righteous man avails much.

But, you know, when you pray and you don't see, like, instantaneous results, then you start to question, well, did I invest this part of my time wisely and well? And the answer is, absolutely you did. You know, there's not an instantaneous cause and effect outcome from prayer.

as we well know on this Bible study, there's certain things we've prayed for for a long time, and then God answers. So let's not grow discouraged in prayer. Let's schedule time for prayer, as Kevin said.

Make it a priority. Get up early enough. to be able to spend some time in prayer.

You know, one of the things, Kevin, I have a problem with is if I get up and I start praying, I go right back to sleep. So I have to actually get up, I have to get dressed, I have to get waked up, and then I'm actually able to pray. with some intelligence, continuity, and awareness.

So every one of us is built different. And so whatever works for you, just do that. But as Kevin said, schedule time for prayer.

You read about the disciples in Acts chapter 3 that they went up to the temple at the hour of prayer. So there was a scheduled time for prayers. And we do well to schedule time as well.

And then, as you said, it isn't about eloquence. It's about honest communication, and it's about humility. So you don't have to be, you know, flowery in your speech.

Just stay it out straight, just like we talk to each other, talk to God, and just pour out your heart before him regarding the needs you have or the needs of others that you're bringing before him. And God hears the simplest prayer from a sincere heart. And he doesn't hear the most eloquent prayer in the world that proceeds out of a proud and boastful heart.

You've got to step up to the plate and say what you had to say. Go ahead. Okay, KG6J, and again, being immature in the words but trying to learn, there are things I remember from years ago in church, and I did some quick Google searching, so hopefully where I'm wrong.

About prayer in general, this is a learning experience for me as well. Matthew 6, 17, Jesus speaks about not praying blind repetition. Yet in 1 Thessalonians, 5:17 it talks about a group praying unceasingly.

So a quick look up of that online, and I think I may have got my own answer, but I wanted to share it and then be corrected if I'm wrong. That's more like the constant conversation going on with God, where you're praising things as you go through your day, and then lifting things up, but not in blind repetition, as Jesus cautioned us again. Do I have this basically right, please?

Correct me if I'm wrong. Yeah, you absolutely have it right. And what Jerry is referring to there is Matthew chapter 6, where Jesus is teaching on prayer.

And he says in Matthew chapter 6 and verse 7, it says, But when you pray, use not vain repetitions as the heathen do, for they think they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore like unto them... For your Father knows what things you have need of before you ask Him.

Well, Jerry, the key word there is vain. There's nothing wrong with repeating the same prayer over and over, provided that each time there's a genuine engagement of the heart and the mind in that prayer. And that...

we ask for the same thing again because we have yet to receive an answer for it. And the classic example of this is our Lord Jesus Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane, right? So he goes into the garden When he prayed, Father, if it be thy will, let this cup pass from me.

And then he prayed a second time, Father, if it be thy will, let this cup pass from me. And then he prayed a third time, Father, if it be thy will, let this cup pass from me. It specifically says in the Gospel that he said the same words.

So here's our Lord Jesus praying the same prayer three times in a row, and clearly he was not engaging in vain repetition. Yes, he was engaging in repetition, but there wasn't anything empty about it. It wasn't just a formality.

And, you know, some people think if they just recite a prayer over and over and over again, like the Lord's Prayer or whatever, without the engagement of their mind... that somehow they're going to beat down the gates of heaven with their much speaking and their constant repetition. So, yeah, when it says pray without ceasing, that means don't let periods of prayerlessness come into your life.

Okay. So we don't want to go a day or two or three without praying and then pray. Also, when it says pray without ceasing, it's talking about all throughout the day as events and circumstances come up, talk to the Lord about it.

So don't let periods of prayerlessness come into your life, number one. Number two, as you're going throughout the day, you know, you can't formally stop and get on your knees and pray, but you can talk to God in your heart. And we see Nehemiah doing this, right?

When he was coming before the king and the king says, "Why do you have such a sad countenance?" He says, "I was afraid." And he says, "I prayed to the Lord and then I answered the king." That's a little heart arrow prayer that he threw up where he prayed before he had this conversation with the king. So, Jerry, you have it nailed. Nothing wrong with saying the same prayers over and over again.

We have the same requests here on the West Coast Bible Study, right? We have our prayer list. And a lot of times, every day, we will pray for the same thing for quite a while.

That's not vain repetition. Jerry, KG6J, back to you. Well, I just want to thank you for filling in the blanks for me and the excellent explanation which references making notes.

As of late, several indications for prayer, desires to pray, that my friends will be protected, especially the one that came over to my house to discern. and pray as to whether his emotional connections that have led to many, many thousands of dollars going to this phantom person who has a picture on the internet. This person, this phantom person has gone into some horrible experiences, all moving this person's emotions, and of course there is the money that flows.

And I was thinking this passage really highlights the area of deceit and discernment and practicing iniquity and mystic falsehood and the drama that has... played on this person's mind and the person's family says it's a scam and this person is kind of betrothed whether it is or not. We basically prayed a prayer yesterday that the person will show up, the real person will actually show up physically.

What is happening on the Internet? to people and and hopefully we're not involved with the characteristics that unfortunately are unaided nature without the holy spirit apparently we can all get to those horrible stages of affairs So... What is happening described in this psalm is all about us.

I mean, it's affected my prayer life because of those that have been involved and been deceitfully used. It's just a wild west of untruth out there, Elvin. Yeah, Roger, thank you for that.

Yes, God hates liars. We read in Titus 1:2, "God cannot lie." And it says in verse 6, "Thou shalt destroy them that speak lies. The Lord will abhor the bloody and the deceitful man." So lying and deceit are things that...

We need to be extremely careful not to engage in ourselves. And those who do that and scam other people and steal money from them by lying to them, those are people who are under the wrath of God. It's a very evil thing the way folks convince and persuade others.

to give them money and then, you know, on false promises and then of course disappear with their funds. You know, we're getting close to getting out of time here. I want to emphasize verse 4 and 5.

It says here in verse 4, "Thou art not a God that has pleasure in wickedness, neither shall evil dwell with thee." Here's the attitude of God. As a holy God, He hates anything that's contrary to His holiness. And so it says in verse 5, "The foolish shall not stand in thy sight; thou hatest all workers of iniquity." Now, that's really strong language.

God hates workers of iniquity. You know, a lot of people say, well, we've got to hate the sin and love the sinner. Sin does not exist apart from people who commission sin.

It's not like you can go out there and find a pile of sin somewhere and hate it. Sin only exists as people commission it. And so you can't separate the sin from the sinner.

The iniquity is attached to the worker of iniquity, and God hates both equally and together. And so, you know, we need to understand that God hates people. and he hates them because they're workers of iniquity.

And he says in verse 6 that he's going to destroy them. And then verse 10, David prays, Destroy them, O God, let them fall by their own counsel. Cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions And I know a lot of people say, well, God loves everyone.

Well, this passage says God hates workers of iniquity. And that needs to be a balancing point of theology that we understand because God's very explicit in what he says here. And we're going to see the same thing over in...

in Psalm 7 and verse 11. God judges the righteous and God is angry with the wicked every day. If he turn not, he will wet his sword, bend his bow and make it ready.

So we need to be warning the lost who are living in willful defilement, careless rebellion against God is that you're under the wrath of God. God is angry with you. It's a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

And if you do not repent, God's going to come in flaming fire, taking vengeance on those who know not God, and to those who obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because without this fear of God's wrath and God's hatred and God's judgment, people aren't motivated to seek salvation, number one. And number two, when we recognize that we were saved, from God being angry with us, of God hating us, and God casting us into hell.

It makes us really appreciate and value our salvation and be thankful to our Lord Jesus for what He did for us. So, some very powerful statements in this psalm that God makes and David makes about the wicked and about the danger they're in, the condition they're in, the hostility God has towards them, and their need for repentance, get right, and get saved. And if they don't, terrible things await them.

So here is the bad news. The wages of sin is death. But then here is the good news.

The gift of God is eternal life for Jesus Christ our Lord. So it's a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God, and we need to not soft-pedal that in sharing the gospel with folks. Because I know for myself, it was my fear of damnation and judgment that caused me to flee to Christ.

And if I wasn't afraid of the wrath of God and the anger of God, toward me, I would have never thought salvation. I would have thought I was okay. All right, we are out of time.

I just wanted to bring that emphasis out there in this psalm because it's so plain, right on the surface of it. All right, any final prayer requests before Al leads us in prayer? Please come down to your prayer request.
