Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness. Thou hast relieved me in my distress. be gracious to me and hear my prayer O sons of men how long will my honor become a reproach how long will you love what is worthless and aim at deception and deception but know that the Lord has set apart the godly man for himself and The Lord hears when I call to him.

Tremble and do not sin. Meditate in your heart upon your bed and be still. Offer the sacrifices of righteousness and trust in the Lord.

Many are saying, who will show us any good? Thank you, Roger. Great reading.

Yeah, KB7ZXN. Good introduction there too, Max. You know, there's really a lot here, but a couple of points here too.

It is wonderful. We see the David's faith revealed here and as we know that salon not only was after him militarily now but he had been as we read about in them as you point out section Samuel 15 he had been trying to undermine David for a good four years trying to smear his name and a you know had put forward a quite a propaganda campaign against David and But yet, we see a couple of things here right off the bat. One, that verse 1, it begins with trusting God.

And in the last verse, it begins with David's, trust or faith in God as well. So we see that congruent throughout the psalm. But one of the other things, too, is David's gift of taking his own pain and sublimating his own pain into public praise.

you know claiming of his righteousness but it's claiming that god who makes him righteous if you look at it in the original text it is pointing to the god who is who justifies him that god is the one that has made him righteous god is the one that justifies and this is the same theme that uh Paul spends Romans unpacking for us throughout the book of Romans, we are justified by faith. Well this is what David is pointing to here right out of the gate, even under this great enormous stress. Another interesting point as I looked at this too is as far back as the fourth century, the early Eastern and Western churches would...

recite this as an evening prayer as them from Psalm 3 as a morning prayer but Psalm 4 as an evening prayer so that was kind of a liturgical tradition for a number of years and maybe long before that as well KB 7 is that example Yeah, Kevin, really good points there. Thank you for that. You know, I really appreciated what you said about David sublimating his pain into an occasion for praise to God.

Here's David in terrible distress. And he's still thinking about, well, how can I glorify God in this terrible distress? And, you know, we see Jesus doing that on the cross, right, where he is giving glory to God in those statements that he makes while he's suffering on the cross, thinking about God, thinking about others.

And so when we're in pain, we ask ourselves, how can we give glory to God? And that's what Beck was saying in his message this morning to us by way of his voicemail, is that even though he's in a wheelchair and he's going down the hallway, he's given glory to God for all those years of marriage and for God's grace and mercy to him. So, yeah, let's use our pain for an occasion to praise.

And then secondly, Kevin, you made the point about David acknowledging the fact that God was the one who made him righteous. If you all look at Psalm 4, verse 1, he says, Now notice, And so... He calls him the God of his righteousness, that is, the God who has supplied him with the righteousness that he possesses.

Now, Old Testament saints understood very well the doctrine of justification by faith on the basis of the impudent righteousness of God to them. And, for example, it says in Isaiah 54, verse 17, This is the heritage of the saints of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord. So God declared, and the people understood, that it was the imputed righteousness of the coming Messiah that was going to save them, not their own righteousness.

And there's a wonderful passage, Kevin, along this line, Isaiah 61 and verse 10. Isaiah 61 and verse 10 says, I will greatly rejoice in the Lord. My soul shall be joyful in my God for...

He has clothed me with the garments of salvation. He has covered me with the robe of righteousness. And so David is sitting here in terrible distress, but also in great confidence.

And the confidence is that God has saved him. God has imputed the righteousness of the Messiah to him. and he stands before God justified.

Now, certainly not perfect in his own behavior, but that behavior had all been atoned for and forgiven, and the behavior of Christ had been placed to his account, and therefore he was justified by faith. He had peace with God through the Lord Jesus Christ, just like we do. So, Kevin, that's an excellent point there.

We don't want to blow right past that statement. David was rooted and grounded and filled with peace and confidence because God saved him. and God had given him the righteousness he needed to stand with confidence in the presence of the righteous God and bring this prayer before him.

All right, any other comments on this passage? Please come down to the call center. KD7ES?

Eric, KD7ES, go ahead. Yeah, just a question. Verse 4.

And I usually, when I'm listening to that, I have my King James Version and my King James Version open. And in verse 4, in the King James, it says, Stand in awe and sin not. But I believe in the UK James Version it says "Be angry in St.

Knott" and I'm just kind of, um, period. This is a different word there. Cause St.

Knott seems like it's a different, um, view or standpoint. versus being angry. Yeah, copy that.

Well, this is the passage that is quoted in Ephesians 4.26 where it says, Be angry and let not the sun go down upon your wrath. And I haven't looked into the Hebrew in Psalm 4, but I believe the translation stand and all is a legitimate translation. It can also be translated, you know, be angry.

The idea there is of our inward heart condition. And I think what's happening here and what the King James authors, or translators I should say, are bringing out is David's counsel to his enemies. David is speaking, notice verse 2.

He's addressing, oh you sons of men, how long will you... turn my glory into shame. So after making this wonderful declaration in verse 1 about how that God has provided him with righteousness, about how God has delivered him at past times, you remember when Saul was chasing him around, back then he called upon God when he was in distress.

and God had mercy on him and God heard his prayer. Well, in light of the fact that God is made of righteous and in light of the fact that God has delivered him in the past and set him on the throne, he now turns, as it were, to his adversaries, to Absalom and his people, and he starts addressing them. Oh, you sons of men, how long?

Okay, verse 3, but know that the Lord has set apart him that is godly for himself. In other words, David was the anointed king, right? And because he was the anointed appointed king, you remember, he had just like seized the throne.

Remember, Samuel came and anointed him with oil and said, God has chosen you, the last of Jesse's sons, to be king. And so he's speaking to his enemies, and he's saying to his enemies, stand in awe of who God is, what God has done, the choice God has made. And when you're attacking God's anointed king, recognize that it's very foolish to fight against him.

You need to stand in awe and sin not and commune with your own heart upon your bed and be still. That is, at night when you're laying down and thinking about your behavior during the day, you need to reflect on whether you're headed in the right direction or not, whether you're doing the right thing or not, whether you're fighting against God and his people or not. So I think that's why they went with the stand in awe.

However, the reason for the translation, "be angry and sin not," is because this is how the New Testament author interpreted it and quoted it in Ephesians chapter 4 and verse 26. And beyond that, Eric, I can't offer any help. I didn't really look at that closely.

So if somebody else can supply some insight in answer to Eric's question, please come down to call us. Is that XF? Kevin, KB7 is that XF.

Go ahead. Well, and I believe that that is the same word that's used in someone to meditate, to ruminate on. And as you well pointed out in Ephesians 4, this is the same principle, to be angry.

There's a room for righteous indignation, to be upset about injustice, but at the same time to not sin. And the point here is he's, instead of meditating and dwelling... on the in becoming bitter which is our kind of tendency to dwell on wrong and injustice and become very bitter and just tainted by that and sin he's focused on God and in awe that deep rumination and meditation on God and that is that is what the spirit would have us do instead of focusing on bitterness and letting that take root as a toxic weed if you will uh the rumination that the awe the deep thought of david is on god himself kb7 is that example Yeah, that does make a little more sense.

Um, and I do recall the passage, or the, the, the quotation in the New Testament, um, and, uh, but I guess, reading from here, you know, my King James, I just don't remember ever standing off, and, um, WB7VZL. Roger, WB7VZL, go ahead. Yeah, the phrase in verse 2, O sons of men, how long will my honor last?

to sit on the throne. I mean, that's a point of glory that God would choose you to sit on the throne of Israel. And of course, he's been kicked off the throne.

So he lost that glory. And so he's addressing his enemies and he's saying, how long are you going to rob me of the glory that belongs to me, that's been given to me by God? How long will you love vanity and seek after lies?

That's what the word leasing there means to King James. And so he is saying to these guys, you are really headed in the wrong direction here. Verse 3 describes what that glory David is referring to in verse 2 is about.

But know that the Lord has set apart him. that is godly for himself. David's speaking of himself in the third person here.

And then we know that because the next phrase says, the Lord will hear when I call on him. And so because God chose David and God placed him in that position, God's going to hear what David calls and woe be to those who are attacking God's appointed king over Israel. And you remember David was unwilling to attack Saul for that very reason.

When Saul chased him around, David had, I think, three opportunities to kill Saul. And he says, I'm not going to touch the Lord's anointing. Because, in fact, God had chosen Saul to sit on the throne.

And so now David has been chosen to sit on the throne and he states that he has the same rights and privileges and prerogatives and protections that Saul had. And he's saying you should show the same kind of respect to me that I showed to Saul because really in doing so you're showing respect to God because he was the one that made the choice. Back to you Roger.

Yeah, thank you very much for that. A very good clarification, because it did become part of, well, how God was actually asking whether you would rebel against His appointment, His anointed. And so it was dividing, as we see here in this psalm, very much so.

You had a verse in Isaiah 54, that was parallel to my righteousness. I got Isaiah 61, verse 10. What verse?

I checked Isaiah 54. Which one? It's so rich.

Which one did you choose? Over. Yeah, that was 54, 17.

54, 17. And then 61, 2. Thank you very much.

I looked that one up. Thank you very much for clarifying the context of this problem. Over.

Yeah, copy that. And, you know, something else I was going to say in response to what you just said. Yeah, so, yeah, so he's counseling his enemies here, right?

And he's saying to them, look, you're attacking God's anointed servant. The Lord has put me in that position. You need to stand in awe, verse 4, and not sin against God's appointed servant.

And you need to have a little chat with yourself when you're laying in bed about the folly of living in rebellion against God's appointed servant. And verse 5, here's the remedy. Offer the sacrifice of righteousness and put your trust in the Lord.

find forgiveness through atonement and then start obeying the Lord instead of transgressing against him. Well, I think, Roger, that we could say that this really applies to the Lord Jesus. The Lord Jesus could be saying these words.

Here he is. He's lived a sinless life. He's gone about doing good.

And Jesus says to those who are crucifying him, "Oh, you sons of man, how long will you turn my glory into shame? How long will you love vanity and seek after lies? Know that the Lord has set apart him for himself." And the Lord's going to hear when Jesus calls to them.

And so with reference to Jesus, stand in awe and stand not. Offer the sacrifice of righteousness and put your trust in the Lord. So really what's happening to David here is a foreshadowing of what happened to Jesus.

And we would offer the same counsel to those who are rebelling against Jesus. You need to stop that. That is a dead-end road that's going to lead to disaster.

Have a chat with yourself and repent and put your trust in Jesus and look for forgiveness through his atonement. All right. Any other comments on this passage?

Go ahead. I'm going to read out a message just three through five here. Look at this.

Look who got picked by God. He listens the split second I call him. Complain if you must, but don't lash out.

Keep your mouth shut and let your heart do the talking. Build your faith before God and wait for his verdict. Well said there.

Yeah, amen. Wait for his verdict. You know, people pass their judgment, but in the end, Jeff, it doesn't matter what verdict they pass.

All that matters is the verdict that God passes. And what verdict did God pass on his son? This is my beloved son in whom I'm well pleased.

What verdict did the wicked pass on him? Crucify him, right? Well, whose verdict stood?

God raised his son from the dead, exalted him at his right hand, and every knee is going to bow and every tongue is going to confess that Jesus is Lord to the glory of God the Father. So, yes, let's not jump to conclusions ourselves, but say to ourselves, Well, what conclusion has God come to with reference to this situation? And, of course, we know those conclusions based on what the Bible says about what God thinks about this or that or the next thing.

So good reading there, Jeff. Thank you for that. All right.

Yeah, I have verse 17 in Isaiah chapter 54 before me, and it is a very wonderful passage. Thank you very much. In fact, I had put arrows next to it, but I don't know what context, but it sure is applicable to this psalm.

Over. Yeah, it really is. Would you please read that verse for us, Roger?

No weapon that is formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue that accuses you in judgment you will condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their vindication is from me, with a capital M, me, declares the Lord. Over.

Yeah, their vindication or their righteousness or their acquittal. The idea there is that they're going to be justified by God. Their righteousness is of Him.

So anyway, right, here's someone who's being attacked. The attack is not going to succeed because God is for them. And if God is for us, who can be against us successfully?

We have plenty of people against us, right? But all of their opposition fails in the end. And all of the goals they're trying to achieve are completely forwarded.

And, you know, you see that with Joseph and his brothers, right? He says, you meant it for evil, but God meant it for good. And so Satan and his people mean evil to us.

And God, who sits in the heaven, laughs, as we saw in Psalm 2. The Lord has them in derision. And his purposes, his plans, and his people always prevail and are vindicated in and through their faith in Jesus.

Good questions, good comments, and I was just thinking here too, you know, when David asked who will be the first to come in, I think it's going to be who will how's it pressed down it's up to away from my screen here but who will who will do us any good and who will provide any good depending on your translation there but then he goes on to talk about the light of the continents of shining upon him. And it's not the solution, the good that is available, ultimately is not from an economic plan or a political solution or more. abundance of wealth, what have you, that light of condense that shines upon you is from life itself.

It is from Jesus Christ, and it is the person of our Lord. John 4 kind of opened up and reflected in in in Psalm 18 and Psalm 19 I know max you pointed to a wonderful verse some wonderful text in Psalm 18 that has been really significant in your life But I think we see the elements of that in this text here too and really opened up in Psalm 18 and 19. But anyway, what a wonderful prayer that David prays here.

And I would concur and agree that, I can't remember who it was that made the point, that David is recognizing that God has anointed him. He is God's called. And we are as well.

When we are persecuted, you know, you are called by God, the kingdom of priests. And so the world can be hostile to you. You can face a lot of difficulty, betrayal, and what have you.

As I think, Max, you pointed out, our Lord and Savior did, which is also represented here. But we can trust in God in that. KB7, is that acceptable?

Yeah, Kevin, well said. You know, that verse 6 is a really important verse. Thanks for drawing our attention to that.

Verse 6 says, "There be many that say, 'Who will show us any good?' Lord, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us." And so, even David's friends, you know, that he fled from Absalom with, they were are in a bit of despair. I mean, they're looking at their situation. They're looking at Absalom's situation, the fact that he seems to have the whole nation behind them while they've got a small army that has fled into the wilderness to try to escape.

And when you look around horizontally, you say, well, there's no one. There's no source of human deliverance here that I can see at all. And David is saying, you know, here's the answer to your question when you say, who will show us any good?

The Lord will lift up the light of his countenance upon us. And so he goes on to say in verse 7, Lord, you put gladness in my heart more than in the time that their court and mind were increased. I will both lay me down in peace and sleep, for thou, Lord, only makest me to dwell in safety.

So the answer to the question in verse 6, who will show us any good, is in verse 8, Lord, you will make us dwell in safety. So what Absalom had was a huge army of people, but he didn't have the Lord. And David had a very small army of people, but he had the Lord.

Well, guess who's going to win? And that's where our confidence has to lie, is in our vertical orientation and trust in the infinitely powerful, omnipotent God. as opposed to looking around at the arm of flesh.

It says somewhere in the Bible, cursed is the man who puts his trust in man and makes not the Lord his trust. And so... David is saying to even those among his group that are discouraged and are wondering, how are we ever going to be delivered out of this?

David said, the Lord will deliver us. Let's all go to sleep. And that's the attitude of faith that says, I can't see the way out of this, but I can see the God who can see the way out of this.

I'm going to just cast it into His arms, I'm going to lay down, and I'm going to go to sleep. And you know, oftentimes at the end of the day, we are full of turmoil over what happened during the day, And, you know, the Bible says, cast your burden on the Lord, and He will sustain you. He will never suffer the righteous to be moved.

And so that's what you do at the end of the day. You take all your troubles and all the problems and all the adversities, and you just transfer them to the Lord for His care and for His resolution, and then you go to sleep. All right, any other comments on this passage?

Okay, so let's put this in the message format where Jeff can understand it. Six through eight. Why is everyone hungry for more, more, more, they say.

More, more. I have God's more than enough, more joy in one ordinary day. than they get in all their shopping springs.

At the day's end, I'm ready for a sound sleep, for you, God, have put my life back together. There you go, Mac. All right, real good, Jeff.

Yep, that's a good interpretive application of what the passages say. And, yeah, you know, at the end of the day, it isn't material things and it isn't people that produce peace or joy. It's our relationship with God and our walk with God and our trust in God that brings true, lasting joy.

And the reason why is because everything else is transient and temporary. I mean, people come and people go, right? And possessions come and possessions go, and health comes and health goes.

none of that is a source of stability. The only source of stability is Jesus Christ, who's the same yesterday, today, and forever. And he's never going to change.

He's never going to come and go. He says, Lord, I'm with you always, even to the end of the world. So I don't need to fear what man may do to me because the Lord is my helper.

And He has said that He'll never leave us for forsaken. So recognizing what the true source of stability is, what the true source of joy is, what the true source of peace and safety is, and putting all of our trust in Him. That is what allows us then to have that inward peace even in the midst of completely chaotic circumstances.

And David was certainly in the midst of chaos here. But in the midst of the chaos he had peace because the object of his trust was one that transcended all of that chaos and provided protection, peace, stability, and of course deliverance. So we know how the story turned out, right?

God's story always turns out with His honor being vindicated and His people being delivered. The wicked never win. All right, we are out of time.

WB7MX, I want to read this text message that doc w6rlj said we've been praying for him and his kidney issues for a long time and he sent me this text message he said at the va they found i have multiple myeloma which inhibits kidney function were a result of the multiple myeloma, which is a blood cancer. And it was producing things that were making the kidneys really unhappy. And so now that they're addressing the multiple myeloma blood cancer, the kidneys are happier, and Doc is now home.

They just had to figure out what the problem was, and it took them a while to get that done. All right, so I just wanted to relate that, and that's what was behind Jerry's prayer today for Doc W6ROJ. Okay, so this is WB7MAX, Net Control for the West Coast Power Study.

because once your kidneys go, that's a pretty vital system there. But God had mercy on him, and he's in recovery now. So praise the Lord for that.
