We barely begin to touch on it yesterday. Lots more there to talk about. I got some questions I need to answer from yesterday that I didn't answer, so we'll be working on those as well.
Okay, any other check-ins, please come down. WB7VZL. Well, good morning, Roger.
All fresh and clean out of the bathtub. How you doing, brother? Good.
Boy, it sure feels good. I planted a lot of beans yesterday in the garden. And it demanded a lot of leaning over.
It's harder than going to the gym. Yeah, copy that. Plus, you get all the dirt in your hair and under your fingernails, and it takes a long time to get cleaned up.
Over. Well, we have what I would call an old garden with a lot of organism, so I planted Yeah, I planted seeds that were, that had poison around them, so I used plastic gloves. Okay, well, real good.
I'm glad that you kept your hands clean anyway. That's a smart move. Yeah, you don't want bacteria getting into cuts on your hands.
That's no good. All right, Roger, we got you checked in, WB7VZL. All right, any other check-ins this morning?
Please come down. All right, it is 6 o'clock. It is time for us to get started with a West Coast Bible study.
We are in the book of Job, chapter 1. And we're going to be reading that again today. Roger, you did such a great job of reading it yesterday.
I'd like to ask you to read it again. I know you read out of the New American Standard. That's great.
And a good, clear reading yesterday. So if you could do that again for us today, for those perhaps who weren't here yesterday, and orient us to what the passage is. Anyway, this book of Job is a book dealing with the issue of suffering and the problem that that is in the minds of so many people.
Why does God allow good people to suffer? Why does God allow Christians to suffer? And so this book really answers the question.
It's about the suffering of a righteous man and why he was going through that and what that was about and how we should view our own sufferings and how we should view God in our sufferings and how we should relate to him. So we have a lot of people and a lot of pain on this Bible study, and so these are really relevant questions. that we're going to be looking at here.
Before we get started with our scripture reading, we need to open our time of prayer and ask God's blessing upon our understanding and study of his words back out, Alpha Phi Yankee. Could you please open in prayer for us today? Arazurad.
Everybody, let's go to the Lord in prayer. Amen. Dear God, today's a new day and chance for a fresh start.
We are grateful that last night when we went to bed, we were able to pray for forgiveness for our sins and have a fresh start to a new day. We look forward to listening to the Bible study today and the scripture. We hope that like Roger planting seeds yesterday to have new growth and have something to feed us or feed himself physically, that the word that we started today can feed us mentally.
And we know that we live in your spirit and have a fresh start every day. In Jesus Christ's name we pray. Amen.
Amen, Beck. Thank you so much for that prayer, Alpha 5 Yankee. All right, WB7 and the X here.
And what we want to do today then is read the book of Job, chapter 1, the entire chapter. And so we'll read together all 22 verses. Here we go.
And then I'll answer some questions that were left over from yesterday, and then we'll have some discussion. All right. Roger.
WB-7VZL, please go ahead and read that first chapter for us. WB-7VZL, reading NASB. There is a man, or there was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job.
I'll start over here. There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job, and that man was blameless. upright, fearing God, and turning away from evil.
And seven sons and three daughters were born to him. His possessions also were 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yokeloks, and 500 female donkeys, and very many servants. And that man was the greatest of all the men of the east.
And his sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one on his day. And they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. And it came about when the days of feasting had completed their cycle, that Job would send and consecrate them, rising up early in the morning and offering burnt offerings, according to the number of them all.
For Job said, Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them. And the Lord said to Satan, from where do you come then Satan answered the Lord and said from roaming about on the earth and walking around about it and the Lord said to Satan have you considered my servant job but there is no one like him on the earth he blameless and upright man fearing God and turning away from evil Then Satan answered the Lord, "Does Job fear God for nothing? Has thou not made a hedge about him, and his house, and all that he has on every side?
Thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. But put forth thy hand now, and touch all that he has. He will surely curse thee to thy face.
Then the Lord said to Satan, Behold, all that he has is in your power. Only do not put forth your hand on him. So Satan departed from the presence of the Lord.
Now what happened on the day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house, that a messenger came to Job and said, "The oxen were plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them, and the Sabaeans attacked and took them. they also slew the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you. While he was still speaking, another also came and said, The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you.
While he was still speaking, another also came and said, The Chaldeans formed three bands and made a raid on the camels and took them and slew the servants with the edge of the sword. And I alone have escaped to tell you. While he was still speaking, another also came and said, Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house.
And behold, a great wind came from across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people, and they died. and I alone have escaped to tell you. Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshipped.
And he said, Naked I came from my mother's womb, Roger, thank you so much for that reading. WB7MAX here. Alright, now yesterday we gave an introduction to this book, as you recall, and we also read the chapter, but the introduction took up quite a bit of time and we didn't have a lot of time to look at the passage and entertain all the comments and perspectives that the were expressed regarding that because we just ran out of time.
So that's why we're back rereading the same chapter, and now we've got some time to discuss it. Now, I did get some questions yesterday that I promised that I would answer today, and we can discuss these answers together. So Keith, K7NEB, said this: In verse 7, it says that Satan is roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it, back then, as he does today, question mark, and how many other demons besides Satan are doing the same?
That's quite a visual with immense implications. So Keith, yes, when God asked Satan what he was doing, He says, "I've been going to and fro in the earth and walking up and down in it." And we know that Satan is the god of this world. We know that this world constitutes his kingdom.
You'll recall that in the temptation in the wilderness in Matthew chapter 4, that Satan offered to Jesus all the kingdoms of the world if he would just bow down and worship Him. And so Satan's kingdom on this earth consists of all of the people who are unsaved. And it consists of the institutions of anti-Christian civil government, anti-Christian religion, anti-Christian society and, of course, as I said, the anti-Christian populace.
So he has free reign to move around on this earth. He has an innumerable company of demons. We don't know how many fallen angels, but certainly millions, because there's multiplied more millions in heaven.
We have an indication in Revelation chapter 12 that he took a third of the angels of heaven with him in his fall. And so there's a vast number of demons, Satan himself, who are administering Satan's kingdom here on the earth. So yes, Satan's not omnipresent, but he does have representatives scattered all around doing his evil work, inspiring his people to persecute Christians, spread his lies, corrupt people through immoral influences, And that's the enemy we face.
We see there, Keith, in Ephesians chapter 6, that we wrestle not against just flesh and blood, but against Satan and his demons who are behind those. We really see how that dynamic works in Revelation 12. where it says that the great red dragon, who represents Satan, stood before the woman, who represented Israel there, who was bringing forth the man-child, Jesus, through Mary, to devour him as soon as he was born.
Well, who was standing there? It was Herod. and Herod wanted to devour Christ as soon as he was born.
And of course he didn't succeed. But we see Satan working through human instruments to attack the people of God, the kingdom of God, and especially the Son of God. So behind all human actions, behind all human institutions...
other than those that are dedicated directly to God. Satan is working in and through all of that. So yes, Keith, he's still walking around.
It says in 1 Peter chapter 5 that he walks about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. But the good news is we can resist him steadfast in the faith. And we, like Jesus, say to Satan, get me behind me, Satan.
"You savor not the things of God, but the things which be of men." And sometimes Satan even speaks through professing Christians as he did with Peter in that situation with Jesus in John 16. In any event, yes, we're involved in warfare. Satan wanders around on the earth with his demons, doing all the destructive work he can.
But the good news, Keith, is that he's on a leash. And we're going to talk about that in a minute. but he can't do anything without God's permission and since God is a faithful father he protects his children and while he does allow Satan limited access to assault them for good and wise purposes which we're going to be talking about here in a minute nevertheless he can't do anything without God's permission and so it's important for us to understand that between Satan and a stand a loving Heavenly Father who will allow us to be tested but not destroyed, and he'll allow Satan to tempt us but not to...
that temptation will not be greater than we're able to bear, but will, with the temptation, provide a way of escape. So, Keith, I hope that answers your question that you wrote to me yesterday at the end of the Bible study. Keith, K7NEB, over to you.
All right, I think Keith is just back to listening on the SDR. Anyway, any other comments on what I talked about or anything else in the passage that you would like to talk about, please come now to your call time. Roger, please go ahead.
Did you give it to me? Roger, WB7VZL, please go ahead. Yeah, one of the passages that has really blessed me, and I really appreciated Keith opening up the discussion with his question yesterday, but I have used Jesus' a comment in John 10, verse 10.
The thief, meaning Satan, the thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy. Well, that sounds like what we just read. in Job.
But I have come to give life and more abundantly. So it's clarified. Sometimes we see the sovereignty of God to the point where it's all coming from God.
4. For I think God has exhibited us apostles last of all as men condemned to death, because we have become a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men. And so when we see these kind of natural disasters occurring, of course, there were two of those here, and we see the lightning falling from heaven, and as a result, a bunch of...
his sheep were burned up and then we see the tornado striking the four corners of the house and collapsing it on his kids and killing them all. What's behind natural disasters? Well, let me just ask you this question.
Were there any natural disasters before the fall? The answer is clearly not. All these convulsions of nature, these are all the results of sin entering into the world.
And Satan has apparently the ability to control some of these things with the permission of God. to bring about destructive influences on people. And so he does come to kill and steal and destroy.
We see the Sabians and the Chaldeans stealing. We see him killing Job's children and Job's servants. We see him destroying Job's wealth.
what a classic illustration here of the work of Satan as described in that passage you quoted, John 10.10. But the good news is the other part of that verse says Jesus says, I'm coming as they might have life and have it more abundantly. So every good gift and every perfect gift comes down from above, from the Father of life, with whom is no variable, with neither shadow of turning.
So we have the Father blessing us, and we see him blessing Job here with tremendous wealth. We have Satan trying to destroy us. And, of course, that's the explanation behind all of the evil things that happen.
You know, people tend to get mad at God. It's like, you know, why did God allow this to happen? Well, you know, instead of blaming God, let's blame Satan.
He brought the fall into the world. He's the one who's actively stirring up evil events and evil people to do evil things in our bodies and in our lives, in our circumstances and in our finances. And so Satan is the one who's at blame here.
And we're going to talk next about why God allows Satan a free hand. Not a free hand, but a controlled hand, I should say, to do certain things. But the point is that we see what is going on here.
And so when bad things happen, let's blame Satan. When good things happen, let's give glory to God. And even when bad things do happen, we can thank God that they weren't worse than they were.
I remember a story about Matthew Henry and how he got robbed on the road. And he says, I thank God that they took my money, but they didn't take my life. And so he recognized how that God had restrained and limited the evil that was done to him, and he was praising God for that.
And as far as the money went, you know, that's a stewardship that God gives to us, and the Lord gives, and the Lord takes away as he sees fit. And our responsibility is just to be faithful stewards with it in our hands. And if he removes it from our hands, well, that's because he wanted somebody else to manage it in some way.
Anyway, Roger, I've rambled on here long enough, but yes, we are a spectacle to angels. Angels are watching. And as we look at this story in Job, right, I mean, God is watching.
The angels are watching. And Job is like on center stage here. And what he does and how he responds is going to speak volumes to the universe, to angels, to demons, to all the rest of humanity.
What a critical point this is in Job's life and how important it is. that he respond well because he is on stage being watched. Roger, great comment.
All right, other comments please, come now. - ZXN. - I think I heard ZXN, Kevin, if that's you, come ahead.
Yeah, I guess I'll turn a little power on. Good morning. Checking in.
KB7ZXN, yeah. And I'm glad we're going back and taking a look at this. One thing, though, I, you know, it's kind of current today, but I think it's worth noting here.
There's a big push right now, and there's a process being, you know, developed. played out of disclosure of UFO files and UAPs and all these different anomalies and things that the government has been involved with for and observing for decades now, if not centuries. But anyway, I would be very careful about that because there is a very dark spiritual component to many of those.
And those that are in that field and study that will be the first to acknowledge that, that there is a, you know, I've heard even some say, if you want to understand those things, you really need to understand the ways of Satan. And so be very careful as these things are revealed. And Satan is a great deceiver.
And they might not be so much extraterrestrial as interdimensional or spiritual, manifesting in physical form sometimes. So I'd be cautionary. But what I wanted to take note of on the text here is just the very first verse.
or the same in private as he was in public and uh but here we see a man that i mean what wonderful attributes and and uh boy wouldn't that be wonderful to have those uh be recognized for those characteristics as well so this evil upon him uh is is is uh like i said a little to understand some of the nuances that we're going to be looking at as revealed to us from these events. But he really, truly endures this in a remarkable way and in one encouraging way. KB7, is that acceptable?
Yeah, Kevin, thank you for those comments. I would certainly agree with the whole UFO thing that there's a lot of demonism that's involved there, and I think we need to not buy into the lies that are being perpetrated about that. I think that's a lot of demonic activity.
and/or some propaganda deception. You know, it says in the last days that things will occur that will draw men away from the Lord. And whatever is happening in relationship to any of that, it doesn't change our theology one iota.
It doesn't change the revelation of God in any way, nor does it change the method of salvation. at any point. But yes, this man, Joe, blameless, upright, feared God, shunned evil, that's a standard that we need to pursue ourselves.
And that's the mark of a mature, godly man. And so that is how we would measure ourselves. Certainly our pastors should be people who are blameless and upright and who fear God and who turn away from evil and lead us in that direction.
So thank you for bringing that up. And I would like to acknowledge JR, K6LVP. Good morning, JR.
See you there on the SDR. Also, Dave, KE7WKI. Good morning, Dave.
Good to see you there as well. I want to take a minute before we run out of time to answer Dan N6T&I's question. Yesterday, Dan N6T&I brought up a question.
I promised him I would answer it today. That question revolved around verse 12. Verse 12 says, "And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, all that he has is in thy power, only upon himself, but not forth by hand." And Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord.
And Dan, in 16, I was asking the question, Why did God allow Job to be put into Satan's power? Now, I'd like to say, first of all, it's a great comfort to know that Satan is not able to carry out all the malice that he would work, if he could, toward the people of God if he had his way. the devil is chained by God he's unleashed by God and he can do nothing without God's permission and so we see here that Job was not just an open target God metered the negative events that happened to him very carefully, and he limited what happened to him very carefully because God had purposes that were completely different than what Satan had.
And that's the thing we have to understand is that there's often two motives behind what happens to us. God has a motive. He's going to work it together for our good.
Satan has a motive, and that is to kill and steal and destroy. And God amazingly is able to take his worst enemies, use what they want to do in such a way as to bring himself glory and work things together for the good of his people. Now, you and I have a hard time getting stuff done.
through other people when they want to help us with our goal and agenda. God gets stuff done through individuals who have no intention of helping God with his goals and agenda. But nevertheless, his infinite wisdom and power enables him to be able to work even through the worst of characters to bring about the best of results.
So... You know the question that was asked by Dan In 16, I is why here's a man who by God's own testimony Is serving him faithfully living obediently and conducting himself blamelessly? Well, I'm just three reasons why God allowed this man to be put in a limited way into Satan's power.
And the first reason he did it was for his own glory, okay? And it was to show that it was his own person that Job loved, not just the gift that God extended Job. That was the blasphemy, right?
Job only serves you because you give him a bunch of stuff. If you quit giving him stuff, he wouldn't serve you and he wouldn't love you because in and of yourself, you're not fit to be loved or worthy to be loved, nor is there any value in loving you in your person. And so God is saying, okay, let's take away everything Job has, and let's see if Job sees in me enough value and worth to love me for who I am, not just for what I provide.
And so I think also he was showing that his work in Job's heart was real and genuine. And it is powerful. And his work in our hearts is able to preserve us in our faith in the worst of circumstances.
And so if what God had done in Job's life was real, and if God truly did transform people into his own dear children, then that would be manifested by taking away everything and still seeing the loyalty. So I think God did it for his own glory. He was demonstrating that his person is worthy to be loved.
He was demonstrating that his saving work in Job's life was real. And therefore, even though everything was taken away from Job, he would still see the worth of God and the work of God in Job's heart would be seen to be genuine and real and not just an illusion based on Job's mercenary desires for blessing. I think secondly, he did it for the honor of Job.
Now, it was a great honor to be entrusted with the reputation and the glory of God. Job's response would either put the lie to the devil and redound to the glory of God, or it would vindicate the devil and bring disgrace to God. And so it was an expression of the confidence God had in Job, that he was willing to entrust his own honor before the entire angelic host to Job and say, okay, let's see what Job does here and let's see what Job says about me by the way he reacts to this circumstance.
Furthermore, Job's own motives have been impugned. And Satan had accused him of just being a user. And so it was to vindicate Job's own honor and reputation that he was not a mere mercenary user that this trial was entered into.
So it brought glory to God. He was worthy to be worshipped in his person, irrespective of his gifts. and that his work in Job's life was genuine and real and not a sham.
He did it for the honor of Job, to give Job the privilege of having entrusted into his hands the honor of God and also to vindicate Job from the slander that he was just in his religion for the money that he could get out of it. And then I think the third reason why he did it, Dan, was for the instruction and encouragement and comfort of all of his afflicted people throughout all the centuries. This event helped us.
Here we are, what, 4,000 years later, to help us understand much about the ways of God. and the workings of providence and the purpose of negative events in our lives. And so Job's trials have been a great guiding light for all the saints who have been wherever shall be tried.
And so it helps us see the nature of spiritual warfare we're engaging in. It helps us see that there are rational reasons behind seemingly irrational circumstances. It helps us to see that God will bring a good result out of evil circumstances.
So there's a bunch of reasons for us. why God put Job through these sufferings. Now, a lot of us on this net are going through a lot of suffering right now, emotionally, spiritually, physically, financially, whatever it may be.
And, of course, God is putting us through that for his glory. He's putting us through that for our good and for the honor of standing with him in difficult circumstances. But also he's doing it for other people that maybe you don't even know about.
Maybe your circumstances are going to affect your grandchildren or your great-grandchildren. And so the ripple effect of God putting Job through this has been echoing through thousands of years to the blessing of the people of God. And I'm sure Job now says, Thank you, Lord, for putting me through that and using me to be a blessing that multiplied millions of people because of what you put me through.
This is WB7MAX, Net Control for the West Coast Bible Study. Dan, in 16, I hope that answers that question to some degree. and helps you gain some perspective that this was not just an arbitrary thing that God did, nor was it cruel, nor was God abandoning Job.
But actually, he was doing something extraordinary here when he allowed Job to be placed in a limited way into Satan's power. All right, WB7NX here. Any further comments, please come down.
Thank you Pastor Max, I think that makes it a lot clearer for me, I appreciate it, N6T and I Yeah you bet Dan, N6T and I, good Alright, any other comments, questions, observations on the passage, please come now AK6OK Jeff, AK6OK, go ahead Well, this chapter is an eye-opener for me. And this was all done for the glory of the Lord. And aren't we blessed that the Lord does not allow this type of stuff to happen to all of us?
Because we would fail miserably, obviously. And Job was so upstanding that... He got through this somehow, as I was telling you.
I read forward, I think, six chapters this morning. It's just astounding. You know, and I was thinking about the whole UFO question.
And remember that the moon shot that we just took where the four astronauts-- were able to go around the moon. One of them, as I recall, became a believer by just looking at what God had created. And should we not all take note as well and realize...
who God is and I'm just blessed that that job was able to take this on and survive himself and still stay true to the Lord when all the rest of us would not have had a chance over Yeah, amen. And you know, God will not allow you to be tempted above your personal individual level of strength. But will, with that trial, provide a way of escape.
But we all have different capacities, Jeff. I don't know that I would have stood like Job did. And that's why God takes his most mature, seasoned saint for this most intense and difficult trial.
And he passed the test. And, you know, the good news is, Jeff, is that God works in us to will and to do of his good pleasure. And he which has begun to perform a good work in us will continue it until the day of Christ.
He will strengthen us in our trials. And, Jeff, you know, look, you're old enough to look back now and see how many times God stained you. Yeah, you stumbled.
We all do. that are in a level of awe, and I equate that almost to the level of worship. And I guess I love that childlike reaction that helps me when we receive the back story of too and I couldn't anyway Jeff thank you so much for being candid with us that was a blessing to my heart to hear you give your reaction this morning like a worship experience I couldn't help but think as I was reading this passage that we have the news media, the five-minute newscast, without any sort of back story, without a complete picture, but just the raw news.
Now, I think the person that in our text says that I alone The emphasis on the alone is multiplication, you know. In other words, it's almost like the person has the scoop. I alone, and I think a lot of the news media, is getting the scoop exclusively, and that perverts the background story.
You know, it takes away. And it's--I think that may have been used to emphasize the total devastation, but I couldn't help hear the media as it plays out for us. and the negativity of sin that the devil lays on this nation every time a broadcast happens.
Over. Yeah, thanks, Roger. Yeah, we get this constant bombardment of bad news.
Job got a bunch of it, one right after the next, right? In an embalmabment of bad news that you hear every day on the media, it's easy to lose perspective. And you know what's amazing is Job turned from the bad news to his God, exercised faith in that God, and fell down and worshipped that God.
And, you know, every day as my wife and I discuss, you know, the news and what's happening, we try to then look at it from the perspective of God's work, God's truth, God's purposes, God's plan. And even though there's a lot of it we don't understand, you know, why did that happen? You know, why did that evil person get into power or that judge make that ruling?
We come back to this. The Lord gave, the Lord took away, blessed be the name of the Lord. And that's the response of raw faith.
If some of our rights are taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord. If we're given some advantage or some material thing or some new liberty, blessed be the name of the Lord. And the thing that I like, Roger, about this, is that in verse 20, Job was not insensitive.
He fell into tremendous grief here. But he didn't just grieve, he also worshiped. And so, yeah, when bad things happen to you, by all means grieve.
By all means cry. But at the same time, worship. Turn from your grief and your pain to God and acknowledge his love for His grace, His mercy, His goodness, His sovereignty, and His wisdom in the way in which He's managing things.
Because God can be trusted even when He can't be understood. Job didn't understand what was going on here other than he saw the outcomes. But, you know, he knew that God knew what he was doing.
And so cry and worship, I think that's the balance there. And then he acknowledged that he was owed nothing and that he had nothing in and of himself and everything he possessed. you know, his health and his wealth and his children and his servants.
It was all a gift of God. And if God gave it, then God has the prerogative to take it away. And as Paul said in 1 Corinthians 4, let a man throw a count of us as stewards of God.
That's all we're doing is managing God's stuff. And if he gives it to us, great. Let's manage it for his glory.
And if he takes it away from us, great. He intends for somebody else to manage it, and he wants us to do something with what's left. Or if nothing's left, he wants us just to worship.
So the thing about Job is in the face of bad news, He always turned to God in his grief over that bad news. And so the thing we need to ask ourselves in any circumstances is simply this. I don't want to sin in the way in which I respond to this negative circumstance.
Instead, I want to worship God. in the way in which I respond to this circumstance, even through my tears. All right, we are out of time, way out of time.
We're going to have to stop here today. But, boy, is there ever a lot of perspective in this first chapter. Are there any final – oh, let's see.

What do you call an angry carrot? Wow. What do you call an angry carrot?
Anybody want to make a guess on that? Go ahead. I don't know.
Back, tell us the answer. I don't know. A steamed vegetable.
A steamed vegetable. Yeah, what do you call an angry carrot? A steamed vegetable.
You know, I way prefer raw carrots to steamed carrots. You know, the wife sometimes puts them in a soup or something, right? The little baby carrots.
and they get all soft and mushy. I like them hard and crunchy. So anyway, that's good, Beck.
Thank you for that. All right, anyone else want to chat? WB7MX is standing by.
Thank you, Beck. Appreciate that. That was fun.
Thank you. Alright, I think I heard Jerry, KG6J. Jerry, go ahead.
Yeah, the band is falling apart, but I wanted to get something in here that really wasn't time during the study. Verse 21, "A Joke's Prayer to the Lord." First I better ask, are you hearing me well enough? Uh, yeah, go ahead.
I think I can get most of it. Carry on, Jerry. Yeah, verse 21, the end of his prayer, blessed be the name of the Lord.
And of course, we hear that. I think there's a contemporary Christian song by that name, and it gets repeated in other places. In that time, in ancient times, your name meant something.
It had a meaning. It was a description. And here we see that Job is saying, blessed be the name of the Lord, and the rest of it, blessed be the Lord.
Am I reading that correctly? Does that also mean blessed "Blessed be all you are, Lord, everything you are." "Blessed be everything you are." Yeah, so he's saying, "Blessed be the Lord." And that phrase means that he wants to speak well of God, He wants to give credit to God. He wants to give esteem and honor to God.
And so blessed be the name of the Lord. Of course, the name of the Lord is the same as the Lord himself, right? Your name, J-E-R-R-Y, is a representation of your person.
So when I say Jerry, you know, we don't think about, you know, a five-letter symbol. J-E-R-R-Y. When I say Jerry, everybody thinks about you and all you are and all you've done and all you are to them.
So when it says, blessed be the name of the Lord, the focus isn't on the name just as a name. The focus is on the person who's represented by the name. And so the word here for Lord is Jehovah.
It's God's personal name. It's the name he uses when he makes covenants. He's also called Elohim, and he's also called Adonai, but Jehovah is a name that's only applied to the God of the Bible and to no one else.
Yeah, he's blessing the God, not just any God, which could be referred to by Elohim, but he's referring to the covenant-keeping God, the God who made covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. And so the focus isn't on the title. The focus is on the person who's represented by the title.
Go ahead there, Jerry. Roger that. Yeah.
Yahweh, Jehovah. I'm curious what the original word was. Usually in the Old Book it's Yahweh or as you said, Jehovah.
But the name of the Lord, there are scriptures in the Bible of the name of the Lord. So that's... why I kind of deflated that to blessed be everything you are Lord but that could be off in the wrong direction I thank you so much for answering that question yeah amen you said it well blessed be everything you are And that's the reason why there are dozens and dozens of names given to God and dozens of names given to Christ.
Because no one name can possibly comprehend all that they are. And so these names are descriptors of various attributes. And so like Jehovah Jireh, you know, the Lord will provide, etc.
So anyway, it's fascinating to study the names of God because of how much they reveal about God. But you are exactly right. It has to be everything there is about you.
And the name is just, she doesn't comprehend those sort of things. But I really respect her nevertheless. But thank you.
That was a wonderful explanation. Over. Yeah, you know, a lot of people get all hung up on, you know, using the Hebrew titles for the deity, okay?
And, you know, there's nothing wrong with translating a name. As long as the translation is faithful. And so we see, you know, all the Hebrew names of all the people are translated into English.
And so it's perfectly fine to translate the name of God and use that, just like it's perfectly fine to translate the name of Abraham out of the Hebrew into English and use that. And so the fastidiousness that some people have about singling out God and insisting on using only Hebrew or Greek terms, for them while translating every other word, I think is really inconsistent and completely unnecessary. And it's not something that, it seems spiritual, but there's no spirituality really attached to that at all.
Go ahead there, Roger. Yeah, well, that I could wish. that I was able to, like I say, have the gifts that you have experienced.
But I never made that through the threshold of autumn. But bless her heart, she... She gave us a message on our phone machine of just wonderful empathy toward our family's memorial service to my dad.
She did meet my dad at a birthday party. and had enough of it to know that, and she acknowledged that she had been acquainted with us. So anyway, she's got a heart.
I told Daylene, I said, "Oh my, this is wonderful. Her heart is there." after having so many disappointments in her heart late, you know, through her life. So I praise the Lord for what she has left.
Anyway, yeah, Max, thank you so much for leading out and all the questions. I was just so thrilled, as you could tell, to have Jeff. share with us about his reactions to the passage.
That was just so beautiful, over. - Yeah, it sure was. And you know, I think that,
========== ### Scripture Reading (KJV) Job 1:1-22 Then there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them. And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought? Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased. But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face. And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD. And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house: And there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them: And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house: And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped, And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD. In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.
### Study Summary
The passage from Job 1:1-22 is a powerful testament to faith and the sovereignty of God, particularly in the face of trials and suffering. Job, described as a blameless and upright man who fears God and shuns evil, faces severe trials when Satan, with God's permission, tests his faith. Job's possessions and children are taken away, yet he responds with faith and worship, saying, "The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord."
The study delved into several key themes and questions. First, the role of Satan and his influence was discussed. Satan is not omnipresent but has a vast number of demons working under him, enabling him to move around and inspire evil actions. Satan's actions are limited by God's permission, and his ultimate purpose is to destroy. However, God uses these situations for His glory and to demonstrate His power, as seen in Ephesians 6:12, 1 Peter 5:8, and Revelation 12:9.
The group also discussed the role of Satan in natural disasters. These events are a result of sin entering the world, and Satan can influence them with God's permission to test and refine believers. Satan's goal is to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10), while God's goal is to give abundant life.
The purpose of Job's trials was also examined. God allowed Job to be put into Satan's power for three reasons: for God's glory, to show that Job loves God for who He is, not just for His gifts; for Job's honor, to vindicate Job's faithfulness and demonstrate the reality of God's work in his life; and for instruction and encouragement, to provide a guiding light for future generations.
Job's response to his losses was a model of faith and worship, even in the face of overwhelming grief. His reaction to his losses shows his faith and trust in God, and his words, "Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD," serve as a powerful example of how to respond to trials with faith and trust in God's ultimate purpose.
The study concluded with a reminder of God's sovereignty and the importance of faith and worship, even in difficult circumstances. ==========
