And what we want to do is continue together our study in the book of Philippians. We are in chapter 1, verses 21 through 30. So we're going to finish the chapter today.
And in this section, Paul is talking about his present circumstances. He's in prison. Nevertheless, he continues to preach the gospel.
seeks to magnify Christ, seeks to have Christ preached. And his attitude is really reflected there in verse 20, which we finished with yesterday. He says, He says, Christ shall be magnified in my body whether by life or death." So his whole concern was that Christ was magnified, Christ was glorified, Christ was preached.
And he didn't much care whether he lived or whether he died, as long as Christ was glorified in whatever happened to him. So his grave concern was not, "What's going to happen to me?" His grand concern was, how is the reputation of Christ going among those that I have contact with? And how can I better represent him, better exemplify his character, speech, and behavior?
And how can I better preach him to the lost? So that's where we wound up last time. Now today, we're going to be looking at verses 21 to 30, where he continues on the same vein of thinking and preaching.
And of course, there's that grand verse 21, for me to live as Christ and die as gain. So we'll be talking about that as well as what's in the rest of the chapter today. in verses 21 to 30.

Father, we just pray that our fellowship would be sweet, that we would be glad in the Lord. and that we would each draw near to him in our heart and reflect and preach him in our lives through the remainder of this day.

Yeah, well said. The Christian life is not a bed of roses. There's a lot of thorns there as well.
And so you're right. We have good times. We have bad times.
We should expect that because that's what happened to our Savior. And, you know, Jesus said in the upper room discourse there in the Gospel of John, in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on Him, but also to suffer for His sake, having the same conflict which you saw in me and now hear in me. So suffering and conflict are a normal part of the Christian life.
And so we have to earnestly contend for the faith, and we have to put on the whole armor of God as we saw back in Ephesians, and we have to stand in the face of that conflict. So yes, it's given to us to believe in Him, which is wonderful, that's our salvation, It's because you still have ministry to do. You still have people to reach.
And you need to ask yourself, Jesus, you know, who do you need me to reach today? And how do you need me to minister to them? And employ our time wisely and well while we are waiting for that summons to enter into glory.
So later on in Chapter 2, he's going to talk about, "Don't look on your own things, look on the things of others." And that's kind of what he's referring to here. I can't just focus on what I want. I need to focus on what other people need.
And you know, mothers do this all the time when raising young kids, right? It's like, "I would really like to get some sleep and know my child needs me at this moment, so I'm going to put aside my needs and I'm going to minister to my child. And that's the nature of all Christians, is that we put others first and ourselves and our desires second.

In verse 27 it says about striving together for the faith of the Gospel, and in 29 it says, "For ye have been granted for Christ's sake not only to believe in him, but also suffer for his sake." Well, there's a lot of religions that don't put their faith in Christ or in the Gospel, but in a man, usually the leader of a congregation or a church sect or a church group.
other persons can for this. Yeah, well, thank you for bringing out what is the object of our faith. The object of our faith is no human.
And, you know, that's kind of what I was sharing with a guy the other day when he was talking to me about these professing Christians who were behaving poorly, and I said, you know what? Christians are always going to disappoint you, but Jesus will never disappoint you. So you've got to put your faith and your trust and your confidence in Him.
And so, yeah, we don't look to any kind of a human leader. We look to Christ. We look to His Word.
And to the degree that other people help us draw near to Christ, to the degree that other people help us understand His Word, fine. I mean, that's what we're doing here on this Bible study, right? We're helping each other toward Christ.
We're helping each other better understand His Word. But nobody's trusting in anybody on this net, especially me. You are trusting in Jesus Christ, and you are looking at His Word as the final source of authority.
And so, yeah, it's really important that we put our focus where it belongs, and not put our confidence in an individual, but put our confidence in Christ alone. Will, thanks for that comment. All right, another comment.

And great discussion, great points made, Max, and by others as well. And, you know, this dynamic, Paul's perspective, what a beautiful and godly perspective and example we have here. You know, through the beginning in this chapter from the persecution, creating boldness, to hear the proclamation and the truth that in Paul's heart, he's not defined by the circumstances by any means.
He's full of the Spirit of God and his fullness in life is to share the good news, the gospel of Christ. And He exemplifies that in his life. This verse, to live is Christ and to die is gain, really is one of the key principles that really gave the martyrs, I think, the strength and the example to endure all they did.
as you look back at the first century churches especially, but even throughout the first, second, third centuries and throughout the Dark Ages and even through the Reformation, so many faithful Christians were persecuted in horrific ways, killed by the tens of millions, What gave them that courage? What gives them the courage today? Well, it's this principle of Paul.
He was full of the Spirit, and his purpose was to share the good news. And we see this. And then as he concludes, you know, in the last couple of verses, we see even the encouragement for us to the, you know, whether your translation is conduct or whatever.
It's really, he uses the same word as citizenship. You know, we should honor that. our Lord as citizens of God, as citizens of the heavenly kingdom.
He's using kind of the analogy of Rome that they would recognize, you know, really in the context. If you're citizens of Rome, you're going to live with recognition of those responsibilities. But, you know, Paul is really pointing to as believers, as those saved in the kingdom of God, we should live and represent and have the responsibility representing as citizens of, of the kingdom of God.
But what an encouraging chapter and book, really. But just the depths of this first chapter alone are just something to behold. KB7, is that okay?
Yeah, Kevin, really well said. I like one of the opening statements you made just now And that is that Paul was not defined by his circumstances, but by his faith. That's a wonderful statement.
We can't be defined by our circumstances. We have to be defined by our faith. Kevin, thank you for that.
That's really good. And in the context of citizenship, you know, not only are we citizens of the kingdom of God, as you well said, but Paul says we're also ambassadors. which means that we have a responsibility to represent our nation, which is, of course, the kingdom of God and our king, who is Jesus Christ, with the message that Christ has sent us to proclaim, which is the gospel.
And so, you know, we have to step back from the material reality being, you know, American citizens. We have to say, you know, above and beyond that, I'm a citizen of the kingdom of God. And I'm an ambassador of that kingdom, and I need to live by His laws, and I need to represent His message to the world.
Because we are reaching into, of course, the kingdom of Satan in an effort to bring them out of darkness and into light and away from the evil one and over to Jesus. So, you know, as we do that, wow, we're going to have some suffering for His name's sake. We're going to have conflict.
We're going to find ourselves tempted to be terrified by our adversaries. Notice verse 28, they did nothing to terrify by your adversaries. And so if you're terrified by them, they think, ah, their faith doesn't amount to anything.
But if we have boldness, even in the face of terrifying circumstances, what that means is that we're not being defined by their threat. We're being defined by Christ and His commandments. So great comment there.
All right, let's get over to Jeff, AK6OK. Jeff, were you just checking in, or did you have a comment for us? Both.
I'm woefully late today. I just left in, which I really need, so that's a good thing. You were talking about how we can be wronged by Christians, and oh my gosh, how that is true.
The power, we're good at it, just like everybody else is. But I was thinking, you know, as another part of that though, wouldn't you rather be hanging around with people who are working the right direction? We're not perfect at all.
Christians just aren't perfect. I know we're striving to be. I would sure rather be hanging out with people who are working on it than people who are denying it, over.
Yeah, copy that. And, you know, we have to understand, Christians are not perfect people. They're people who are moving toward Christ-likeness.
They haven't achieved it yet. And so we need to be loving and patient in this whole process of growing up together into Christ. And so, yeah, you know, it's like, oh, you know, Christians don't live out what they claim to believe.
Well, guess what? That's the norm. And does the world do any better?
It actually is a little worse. And so I would rather be around a bunch of imperfect Christians than be around a bunch of blasphemous, wicked, ungodly, unfaithful people. And, you know, Paul says, "When fellowship hath light with darkness," right?
that light has fellowship with light, and the light may flicker a bit, it may not be as bright as we would like, but those are our brothers and sisters in Christ. And we need to love them, and we need to resolve our conflicts with them, and we need to go forward in grace together, striving for the faith and the Gospel together. So, Jeff, thanks for that perspective.
Yeah, we give offense, we receive offense from Christians, But we need to work those things out and we need to stick together. All right, any other comments, please come down. How's that, X-Man?

I just, you know, I reflect when I think about the boldness that Paul had and really this, as we learned earlier in this chapter, you know, this perspective, this faith of Paul that he lived out really brought boldness to, as we're told, to other saints and other churches elsewhere. And, of course, he points out there those that have their own agendas and try to use it to look, oh, look, Paul, he's just a failure, you know. Follow me and give me your money like we see today.
But, Paul, he points out even those that aren't, you know, have their own agendas. They're mentioning the name of Christ. And we pray that people will, you know, by that alone they will find true teaching, true gospel understanding, true transformation in Christ, and, you know, to God be the glory in that.
And then this, the strength of his faith here, too. As we know, there's so many that are persecuted around the world daily. Not long after I had met Bosé online and began my wife talking to her who lived in West Africa there.
And in Nigeria, I remember hearing a story that – just really touched my heart and just, you know, there was a young girl in the university that just passed a difficult test. I mean, she had just really, she'd been studying and And anyway, she just simply posted on, I think it was Facebook or WhatsApp, one of the little social media groups, and she just posted, and she thanked Jesus for, gave Jesus the glory for helping her pass that test. And for that, she was drug outside because she would not renounce what she said.
in Jesus, she was stoned to death, she was burned, she was drug around and desecrated in horrible ways because this is a school up in northern Nigeria where the Muslims are quite extreme. They're not that extreme in the southern part of the country, but up north, the extremists are just very violent. But this is just one example.
She refused to denounce Christ. and giving him the glory for her achievement there. But it cost her her life.
But that's just one example. So many times you'd see kidnappings up there, and a woman would have her children kidnapped and have to watch them tortured and killed one by one just to try to persuade her. Father, we thank you for the promise that the die is gained.
We thank you for the blessing that when we depart and be with Christ, it will be far better than we are now. And so, Father, may we keep that blessed hope bright and in front of us. And may we recognize that suffering for Christ is a privilege and a gift.
Help us to not be terrified by our adversaries. so that you would give us a crown of life. Father, we pray today for our brother Jerry, 87-ER.
Father, there's a couple in his church who has a pregnant granddaughter who's traveling from Arizona to Roseburg. I'm really concerned about the Sharia law thing. It seems that Congress doesn't seem to think that it's an important enough issue that we should pursue the no Sharia law in the United States of America. And I was looking at the list of people that are supporting it, and they're all Republicans.
I didn't see one Democrat that supports it. Yeah, well, the thing about the Democrats is that they've made an alliance with the Muslim community. in our constitution and the freedoms that it grants us.

I really think that we need to get a little more specific in the prayer. and save the nursery a lot of assets. and bring that to our legislature recognizes that we just have a religion.
They keep pushing in the positions of religion and under the First Amendment, we have the right to pass any free speech in religion that we choose. And they're using that as a tool to try and fix real law in the United States of America and then have progress with it. Did we really need to add that to our prayer list and say it's up to you?

But certainly the antidote to Islam is the gospel. And so that's why we need to be bold and we need to convert Muslims to Christ. But that's really the solution to the problem.
Of course, the government has its role to play in stopping criminal activity. But you know, you're exactly right, Bec. Islam is a totalitarian tyranny masquerading as a religion.
And they use the religion as the excuse to justify the imposition of their tyranny. But it's communism, you know, which is totalitarianism, with... a religious dimension, which makes it even more dangerous.
You know, one of the reasons why communism failed is that it was atheistic, and there wasn't a altruistic motivation for the people to persist in it, and if it didn't deliver material goods and equality, which it doesn't, and it can't, then there was no other reason to adhere to it. And even though Islam produces terrible outcomes in the nations in which it deserves and practices, people continue to cling to him because this outwits the big motivation they have that we're serving Allah and we're going to wind up in heaven with 72 virgins. And even though we're experiencing terrible outcomes from following this, we've got this hope of some sort of a sensual self-indulgent heaven.
So, yeah, you know, the bottom line is you don't tolerate a religion that does not tolerate other religions. And so, yeah, I'm all for freedom of religion. I'm firmly committed to that and left.
It's a religion that doesn't tolerate other religions and demands that if you don't adhere to its religion, we will either enslave you or put you to death. That's not a religion that deserves protection under the First Amendment. Back to you there, Beck.
