Unfortunately, my son-in-law now has it. And my son-in-law's surgery is scheduled for June 22nd. And I will be asking for prayer when we get closer to that date. So we can praise the Lord for Carol KK7TPO's daughter feeling better. And we need to now pray for her son-in-law. that he will overcome what his wife had. So anyway, that's the request there. And, of course, he's also scheduled for some serious back surgery in June, but we'll pray about that when the time comes. So copy all, Al. Good talking, thanks. Thank you Al, appreciate that. All right Carol, we got that covered. Thank you for that. Okay, any other prayer requests or check-ins this morning, please come out. Morning, Man State K6O And good morning Jeff, AK6OK, how you doing brother? Just got going here this morning, half awake, I'm gonna be checking out early too, we got a cowboy church this morning at the rodeo. Copy that, so you're at the rodeo, we got you for an early out, Jeff, appreciate you being there and you guys have a great day. Alright, God bless Jeff, AK6OK. Alright, any other check-ins, please let them know. Right, the net would like to acknowledge Peter, KJ7BA. Good morning, Peter. See you there on the Utah SDR. Appreciate you being there, brother. And Peter says good morning to everyone. All right, real good connection there. Appreciate that. All right, let's go over here to Half Moon Bay and see who has showed up. I haven't seen Phillip here this morning, K6HSV. But anyway, maybe he'll show up in a little bit. But, yeah, we've got Peter, Dan. and Doc there on the half moon gate. Alright, any other check ins please come now. WB7VZL with a great signal, we praise the Lord for that, over. Yeah, amen, you are 5 by about 15 over 9, so Roger good signal on you as well. How are you guys doing? Yeah, this is very, very meaningful because of my noise level. It's always around seven, sometimes more. So, yeah, it's a good day to hear you and hopefully we'll hear some others as well. Yeah, well, as usual, we're better than we deserve for sure. had a, well, it's an alumni weekend here on the campus of Walla Walla University, and we've had some wonderful meditation on God's Word. Yesterday afternoon, presentation by one of the theology professors that he's been a real lighthouse here on the campus for the kids and for older kids like me. Yeah, I had a good day at one of my churches that I used to pastor, and they asked me to preach, so I did some preaching on Gael, the guy that had so much pride, the guy that had di-o-st-e-mia, um, boy, I guess my brain's not operating, over. Yeah, would there be diatrophies there in second John, over? Yeah, that's third John, over. Yeah, third John, that's, uh, okay, good. Well, thank you for that, Roger. Glad you were able to preach on diatrophies. And anyway, that's important that if we're in the ministry that we avoid any sense of personal self-importance or pride. You know, we have the example of the Apostle Paul, who, even though he was so central in the work of God, said of himself, that he is the least of all saints and not worthy to be called an apostle because he persecuted the church. So anyway, humility befits us for sure. Roger, good. I'm glad you had that great time of spiritual interaction, both in your preaching and also in that alumni weekend at Walla Walla University. All right, Roger, we got you checked in. I'm going to ask you to open in prayer when the time comes, so if you could be ready for that, that would be great. And we are in Ephesians 4, 17 to 24. Anyway, that's where we're at in our study together today. All right, any more check-ins, please come down. All right, the net we'd like to acknowledge Gene, K7GWR. Good morning, Gene. See you there on the Utah SDR. Appreciate you being there with us. Let's see, who else do we have on the SDRs? I think I've got everybody checked in. Yep, okay, real good. All right, we are ready to get started with our West Coast Bible study. As I said, we're in Ephesians 4, 17 to 24. And in this section, of course, we started at chapter 4, verse 1. Paul is talking about the unity that we must pursue. And we talked about the need to preserve this unity. We talked about the basis for the unity. And then we talked about the fact that participation in a local church is essential to deepen this unity and to develop it. so that the whole body is joined together by that which each gifted person supplies. Well, Paul changes tact a little bit here, and he goes from talking about unity to talking about our walk. And so he's going to talk about our walk with the Lord for quite a little section here, and that covers chapter 4, verses 17 through chapter 5 and verse 21. First of all, he says how we're not supposed to walk. We're not supposed to walk like the Gentiles walked. That's the section we're going to be looking at today. And then we're going to see that positively we're supposed to walk in love as Christ walked, walk in light as Christ walked, and walk circumspectly as Christ walked. Well, that's quite the section that we're going to be covering in succeeding days, not all at once, of course. So we're going to look at the contrast between how the Gentiles walk and how the believers walk. So that's the section that we're looking at. But before we get started with our reading and discussion of that passage, we want to open our time together in prayer. And so, Roger, WB7VZL, if you could open in prayer for us today, I'd appreciate that. Amen, real good. Okay, Will, Keelmike 5 Foxtrot, if you could read for us today, appreciate that. That's Ephesians 4, 17 to 24. Ephesians 4, 17 to 24 there, Will, go ahead. Okay, I'm sure, just give me a second. Okay, uh, seasons 17 through 24. Therefore I say this, and I'm reading in the, uh, whoops, I gotta change this for a second. Can't find it. Seasons 4. 17 through 26, and I'm reading in the NASD 95. So this I say and affirm together with the Lord that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk in the futility of their mind, being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart. And they, having become callous, have given themselves over to sensuality, for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness. But you did not learn Christ in this way, if indeed you have heard him, and have taught in him, just as the truth is in Jesus. that in reference to your former manner of life you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth. That brings us to verse 25. Okay, I'm glad that. All right, well, good. Well, thank you for that reading. Appreciate that. Okay, that's Ephesians 4:17 to 24. Any comments on this section, please come down to the call sign. Well, certainly, Max, WV7VZL, we have in verse 22 and 23, the new self and the old self there in just three verses. So that should be, that's pretty vivid. Over. Well, you know it is. And I think what we see here, Roger, among other things, is the transformative nature of conversion. That in conversion, there is a dramatic change in who we are, and of course, as a result then, how we behave. And so elsewhere, we have read in 2 Corinthians 5.17, that if any man be in Christ, he's a new creation. And the old things pass away and all things become new. And so, Roger, I've run across a lot of people who claim that they're Christians, and yet their life after their profession of faith is no different than their life before their profession of faith. And if there's no transformation, if there's no putting off that former walk as the Gentiles walked, and there's no putting on of Christ and His character and His conduct and His thinking, then there can't have been any kind of a conversion. And so I think this is really a pivotal point here that we need to focus on and we need to ask ourselves the question, Am I any different after I was saved than I was before I was saved? And if not, I think we need to go back and reexamine that salvation. Back to you there, Roger. That phrase in 22, when it talks about the old self, it enlarges on that. That is a powerful three-word phrase. And so often if there's any sort of relational deceit or disguisement, if the transparency is not there, you're most likely on the wrong side of the old self. Yeah, because, you know, it says regarding the unsaved heart that it's deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. And so one of the things we recognize is that Satan is a liar, and he's the father of lies, and his children... are those who engage in and express those kind of lies and that kind of deceit. And one of the things we see about God in Titus chapter 1 and verse 2 is that God cannot lie. And so His children are not deceitful. They don't lie to themselves. They don't lie to others. There are people who tell the truth. And, you know, we're going to see that in verse 25 when we get to it. We didn't read that today. But we put away lying and speak the truth. So, yeah, it's the nature of the unsaved heart. that it is corrupt according to deceitful lusts. And so the old unsaved person lies to himself and says, "I can indulge in all these sins and everything's going to be fine and everything's going to turn out fine and there's not going to be any accountability either in this life or in the next." And those are the lies that Satan tells us. Those are the lies we tell ourselves. It's the nature of the unsaved heart is that its fundamental characteristic is lying, because its fundamental connection is with Satan. It says in John chapter 8, Jesus says, You are of your father the devil, and the lust of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning and abode not in the truth. And so he's the father of lies. And those are the characteristics of his people. So one of the transformative things that really takes place when someone becomes born again, and that is they go from being a liar to being a truth teller. They stop lying to themselves, and they recognize themselves for who they really are, and they own that. Um, and then they stop lying to other people, and they start telling the truth. So Roger, great points there. All right, other comments on this passage? Please come down to the call side. All right, while you're thinking, let's talk about verse 23. It says we're to be renewed in the spirit of our mind. How do you renew the spirit of your mind? Can anybody give me some advice on that? Thank you, 602. Jeff, AK6OK, go ahead. You know, I just remade your thinking, changed your thinking in the way you think. This is a complete mindset change from what you used to be like to what you need to become. Yeah, copy that. And, you know, it reminds me of the book of Romans we just got done reading, Romans 12 and verse 2. Be not conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good, acceptable, and perfect will of God. And so, Jeff, I think that, you know, one of the things we can do to be renewed in the spirit of our mind is just to be saturated with the Word of God. You know, the problem is that Satan has filled us with his lies. God's Word is the truth. And so the best way to turn away from lies and deceit and to embrace and understand and articulate and live out the truth is by saturating ourselves with the Scriptures. And that's one of the things we're doing here in the West Coast Bible Study every morning. We open our Bibles, we read a section of Scripture, and what we're reading is the truth. And as we absorb that truth and remember that truth and are transformed by that truth, our thinking is renewed. And it's transformed. And so Christians think differently than non-Christians. Their mind has a different set of values. It has a different framework of understanding. And it has a different content. And so I think this is part of, you know, the putting off of the old and the putting on of the new. Is it starts in the heart, in the mind. It says, as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he. So, you know, time and again, Jeff, you hear these motivational speakers, especially at high school graduations. And, you know, the mantra is follow your heart, follow your heart. Look, following your heart is the very worst thing you could possibly do because the heart is deceitful, of all things, and desperately wicked. You don't want to be following that. You know, instead they should be saying, follow Jesus, follow his teachings, follow his word, follow his example. Live out the values that he articulated and exemplified in his life. And so we've got to look outside of ourselves. for the truth. We've got to look outside of ourselves for an example of how we should live. And where do we look? We look to Jesus and we look to his word. We look to mature believers who have long walked with Jesus and long lived out his word. and that's one of the ways that our minds can be renewed. So good comment there Jeff, thank you for that. Alright, any other comments or follow ups please come now. GWB 7VZL WB7VZL Okay I had a double there, first we'll go with Roger, WB7VZL and then other station will pick you up. Roger go ahead. Yeah, I just wanted to repeat the prayer that has really caught my attention that I've used several times here. In the morning, I recognize, as you said, Jeremiah 17, 9. Our heart is deceitful, so I pray, as you have heard, take my defective will. and send it back to me, purified and sanctified. I know I can't do it myself. And so that connection with the Holy Spirit, to that prayer, and accept it by faith, and do the things that are faithful. And then my words as you say, read the Word of God, and be part of that. WB7, visit us. Yeah, amen. And that is a great prayer, Roger, and one that's scripturally based. You know, it says in Philippians chapter 2 and in verse 13, For it is God who works in you both to will and to do. of His good pleasure. So God works in our will, and then He works in our conduct. And so that's a prayer that's in complete harmony with Philippians 2 and verse 12. And so to pray, God, take my defective will, purify it, and give it back to me so that I make right choices. is a great prayer. All right, there was another station that doubled with Roger. Other station, please come now. - K6LBP, Max. - Okay, K6LBP, JR, good to have you. Go ahead there, brother. - Yeah, this is a new man. You know, he speaks to me of my own experience as being transformed. into an individual who thinks differently and has a different heart today. You know, I've always learned that deep within me is where he who is dwells. The deepest part of me is not my head. Actually, the deepest part of me is my belly, but the deepest part of the human body is supposed to be the chest. Therefore it's protecting the heart, that's why it's the thickest part. The mind, I believe, is to be used as a tool, not a master. And the tool is handled by the heart, through the heart. And if I don't work those two things in conjunction, then my mind takes control. My mind is where my ego dwells, and that's where the devil hangs out. And what I find is it's similar to the old days when a guy had a plow and a horse. You know, he got up in the morning and he hooked the horse to the plow and he sunk that plow in the ground and he didn't go back in and drink coffee all morning. He had to stand behind it and keep that plow rolling straight. He had to rein the horses. I believe that the plow is the heart and the horses are the mind. And if we just let our mind run wild, we're going to have a messed up field. It's not going to have very straight furrows. It's been my experience, and it's proven in many areas to be accurate. Casey, tell me, Pete. JR, great comment. I really appreciate that. And that goes right along with Proverbs 4, verse 23, where it says, Keep thy heart with all diligence. for out of it are the issues of life. And so the heart is that place where we have that deepest connection and communion with Christ. It is, if you will, where our conscience dwells. It's where the Spirit speaks to us. And, you know, the heart and the mind work together. to either serve Christ, or if our heart is deceitful, and our mind is darkened, they work together to depart from Christ. So, you know, when you look at the inner man, you know, we have a conscience, we have a will, we have affections, we have thinking, And so all of these various components of the inner man operate. And they either operate together for good or they operate together for evil. But you know, Christianity is preeminently a religion of the heart. And there's a passage in Matthew chapter 15, I think, that really speaks to this issue. I'm trying to turn to it now with one hand. Matthew chapter 15 and verse 7, Jesus is talking here to the Pharisees, J.R., and he says, "You hypocrite, well, did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying, 'This people draws near to me with their mouth and honors me with their lips, but their heart... is far from me. So once again, you know, Jesus, just like Proverbs and Eltor in the Scripture, the focus is on the heart. Who are you really at the very core of your being? Do you love Jesus with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength? Or is your heart really attached to something else, and Christianity just kind of hangs on at the periphery? And so Jesus is either at the core of our being, or he's not in our being at all. So JR, great with you. Thank you for that. Appreciate that perspective and that emphasis. And I think that that's where we get the most honest with ourselves is right there in our hearts. Okay. Other comments or follow-ups, please come down to your call plate. AK6, okay. Jeff, AK6, okay. Go ahead. You know, this reminds me a little bit of this reading in the military. And if you look at, uh, if you guys look up Admiral McCreeman, Admiral McCreeman talks about, uh, what can make you successful in life. And he starts with his first comment, "Make your bed." if you want to change the world, you make your bed. And then he goes through, what is it about making your bed that's so important? Square corners, tight covers, center pillow, folded blanket. That's how you start your day. And when you look at the Ten Commandments, those are commandments, those are what God says will make life go well for you. And I believe that's what this is referring to, not that the military has it right, but this is how they train people in boot camp. And get your mind set so that the first thing you do is make your bet. This is, you know, the top ten things that will make you straight and make you a perfect soldier, a Marine, whatever it happens to be. That's how I put these two together in my own mind. Yeah, Jeff, I have seen that speech. It's an excellent speech, very well done. And, you know, basically what he's saying is that, you know, when you start out with the little things and doing the first things right, everything else follows. And if you had a bad day, at least there was something you did do right. And so here we are starting out with the West Coast Bible study. And, Jeff, this is like making our bed, okay? We get out of bed. The first thing we do, we fire up our radios. and we talk about the Lord. And, you know, I can't say how the rest of our day is going to go, but we started the day right. And at the end of the day, whenever we've gone through, whatever we've experienced, we can look back and say, you know what, I started the day with God. I started the day with those focused discipline of putting the kingdom of God first, putting my walk with Jesus first, listening to Jesus before I listen to anything else. And I think that... This is why the West Coast Bible study is so important, to begin our day so that we get started outright. And maybe we go wrong during the remainder of the day, but we've always got something to come back to at the end of the day. And that is the promises of the Word of God, the encouragement of the Word of God, and the fact that we were in connection with God through His Word when we started the day. And we can always go back to that. So, Jeff, thank you for that illustration. and that comment. Okay, any other comments, please come down. While you're thinking, I wanna comment a little bit on verse 17, which is the first verse we read today. This I say therefore and testify in the Lord that you henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk. And then he begins to describe what that walk looks like. He talks about the vanity of their mind, and then he talks about having their understanding darkened, and then he talks about them being alienated from the life of God. He talks about the ignorance that is in them, and he talks about the blindness of their hearts. And then he talks about the perversion of their affections to being past feelings. I have given themselves over to every kind of sensuality or lasciviousness, as the King James says, to work all uncleanness or impurity with greediness, that is, with great enthusiasm. So what we have here is a description of human depravity, what it looks like, how it's expressed, and what its characteristics are. And, you know, one of the things we can learn from is negative examples. You know, the Bible's full of them, right? There's lots of descriptions of people who made bad choices, who did bad things, and who had bad outcomes. And the lesson that God has for us in recording those things is that he's saying to you, Don't go there. Don't do that. This is what happens when you do. And so, you know, as you look at the unsaved folks around you, verses 17 to 19 is a description of who they are. It's also a description of who we used to be before God saved us. And the idea is don't go back to those things. Because the end of those things, of course, is death. And the other thing we see, this is the reason why evangelism is so hard. Because when you look at someone who is vain in their thinking, they're darkened in their understanding, they're ignorant, they're blind, and they have corrupt affections. Well, no wonder it's so hard to get through to them with the gospel. Unless God raises them from spiritual death to spiritual life by the work of calling and regeneration, they're just going to traipse right along in that same pattern of behavior. And, of course, then we have this huge word in verse 20, but... But you have not so learned Christ. And so what we are is the opposite of all of those things. So some perspective there on who we used to be, some perspective on the unsaved people we're witnessing to, and some perspective there on what we want to turn away from and cultivate the opposite of. All right, any further comments, please come down to the call line. WB7V0. Roger, please go ahead. Yes. In the New American Standard Bible, there is a word that has quite a bit of meaning for our group today. And I didn't hear it. And I guess I didn't hear it in your translation, King James. In verse 17, this I say therefore, and affirm this. together with the Lord. So in a sense, I'm enlarging the together to the group of us with the Lord. I thought that was a neat phrase to lift each other up in the togetherness. Yeah, copy that, Roger. In verse 17 in the King James, it says, If I say it therefore and testify in the Lord, that is, in union with the Lord or together with the Lord is the idea there. And so I appreciate you bringing that word out together because it certainly conveys what the original language is communicating there. And perhaps the King James doesn't state that as forcefully as your translation does. And so, you know, we don't come up with this stuff on our own. We're saying the same thing the Lord says. And so when the Lord says something, we're together with him in saying the same thing. And really what we are is an echo of what Jesus said. We don't come up with our own theology. We say, okay, what does Jesus say? I'm with him. I'm going to echo and speak what he says. So, Roger, thanks for pointing out that powerful word there. and that we are together with Christ. You know, it says in 1 Corinthians 3, we're laborers together with Him. And, of course, we're also preachers together with Him. Good comment, Roger. Okay, other comments come now. Brian, KA7CIP, go ahead, please. Yeah. every thing and everybody that has told you, told you more in the past in your life um I don't know if there is a one that could be making those terrible words this morning but it shows, like we said it shows the way of the Gentiles they've chosen a path or one we've been talking about they've chosen a path to turn away from God and they may never have something in their life that turns them back to the other way so this is where we can be so thankful that we have had I can guarantee that I'm not a finished product, but if I take those things and put them in my know-how and magnify them by what they would be if I didn't have the Lord, what a wretched person I'd be today. Brian, that was really, really well said. Very, very articulate. You know, Brian, as a pastor, I've been a pastor for a long time. Of course, I prepared lots of messages, and I have this big sign on my desk, and the sign says, so what? So I really echo what you're saying there, because if you can't apply to the personal life the doctrine you're teaching, why are you teaching it? And what benefit is it if it doesn't have any transformative effect on you? in moving you away from darkness and toward the light, moving you away from sinfulness to holiness, moving you away from selfishness to Christ-likeness. So I think that that's a grand question that we all need to ask as we read the Bible. You know, you read a section, and then you say, so what? What difference does that make? And you need to answer that question because that's where the application is, and that's where the transformation is. That's where the motivation is. And most importantly, that's where the worship is. And, you know, you mentioned the need for gratitude toward those who have led us out of darkness and into light. And as you said, were it not for the new birth, were it not for the indwelling Spirit of God, were it not for all the means of grace that God has supplied, we would be just as bad as this description in verses 17 to 19. You know, you look at how people who have no restraint give themselves over to all sorts of impurity and sensuality and wickedness. And you can see that in the homeless people on the streets, you know, just wrecks of humanity. because of the way depravity has driven them into the most awful choices. And, you know, everyone's on that journey who are not saved. And so the fact that somebody stepped into your life and shared the gospel with you, provided an example to you and encouragement and a helping hand so that you could come out of that horrible pit of depravity, and come into the light. Well, you're right. Thankfulness is in order. I think back to the person who led me to Christ, and I'm thankful constantly that that person opened his mouth and asked me a question, what's going to happen to you after you die? And that was the beginning of where I'm at today. And so let's be those people that Brian's talking about. You see somebody who's in terrible bondage to terrible sin, that's described in verses 17 to 19. bring the gospel to them. And perhaps God will open their eyes and open their heart and open their mind and turn them from darkness to light. So, Brian, great comments. Thank you for those. All right, any other comments? Please come down. Foxtrot. Foxtrot. We'll cue Mike 5 Foxtrot. Go ahead. Yeah, back to verse 18. We've been talking about the heart a lot. The heart is a pulse. In the olden days, you used to have to prime the pump, and you'd prime it with clean water. If you primed it with dirty water, it took a while to get the clean water out of the pump. Our heart is also a spiritual pump. And with this Bible study, we start our day or prime our pump with prayer, clean water, and with God's truth, God's word. And I thought that was a good analogy that came to mind. Yeah, Will, that's a wonderful analogy. Our hearts are pumped, and we need to prime that pump with clean water, and then it produces good water. So, yeah, let's prime our hearts at the start of the day with the Word of God so that it pumps, as it were, that truth into our minds all throughout the rest of the day. Great analogy there, Will. Thank you for that. Okay, any other comments on the passage? Please put an answer call, Mike. Well, let's focus for a minute on verses 20 and 21. After describing the depths of depravity of the unsaved person in verses 17 to 19, he has this word of contrast that you have not so learned Christ. Now, notice verse 21. It says, and have been taught by him as the truth is in Jesus. And so this is how our minds are transformed from having a darkened understanding and having ignorance and having blindness. So coming into the light and into the truth, we need to learn from Jesus. So we need to open our Bibles, we need to read the Gospels, and then we need to read what the apostles in their epistles have to say about the teachings of Jesus in repeating them and amplifying them and expanding them. And so everybody wants to teach you. There's all these social media influencers, and they want to teach you. There's all these newscasters, and they want To teach you. And then you've got people in schools and colleges. They want to teach you. And then you've got the entertainment industry. They want to teach you. And you could go on and on, right? There's lots of voices out there saying, "Hey, listen to me. I've got something to teach you." There's only one voice that we need to be listening to, and that's the voice of Jesus. The truth is in Jesus. We need to be those, as verse 21 says, who are taught by Him. And so we need to hear Him. We need to be taught by Him. We need to recognize that He has the truth. And anybody that agrees with that truth is teaching the truth. And anybody that contradicts it is to be pushed off as a false teacher and as a corrupt source of information. So that's why it says, "Be not conformed to the world." The world has a message, and they're saying, "Come, follow us." And Jesus has a message. He says, no, be transformed by the renewing of your mind by listening to me. So that's how we put off the old man. That's how we are renewed in the spirit of our mind. That's how we put on the new man, is by listening to Jesus, learning from Jesus, both his teachings and his example. And then, of course, praying. And like Roger said, Lord, take my defective will. and return it back to me purified so that I make good choices based on the teaching and example of Jesus. Because we still have that remaining sin in us that wants to do wrong. And there's this constant work at putting off this corrupt behavior like Brian was talking about, were it not for Christ's saving work, there's no telling where we would go and what we would do. So we need to turn away from that, and then we need to embrace the truth. And we're going to talk about that tomorrow. I would encourage you to read, after this Bible study, verses 25 to 32. because it talks about, and we're going to talk about, examples of what it looks like to put off the old ways and to put on the new. All right, any final comments before we go to prayer? Please come down with your call line. WV7, these are now. Roger, go ahead. your description brings to mind listening to the tour guide who was steeped in Greek mythology and she was the most enthusiastic promoter of the story of the culture of that part of the world and it was It was the most horrible, unsatisfying, ridiculous, traditional stories that I'm sure go back a long ways.
