So, Roger, we will pray for Arm and her future, and the blessing that you will now enjoy with having some privacy in your home and your ability to focus on your wife and to help her through this trying time that she's going through with her medical needs. Thanks for being there, just running through my list here, making sure I haven't missed anybody. Let's see, over here in Utah. I think we've got everybody checked in that showed up there with a call first. Okay, this is WB76. We're going to get started with our Bible study. We're in Ephesians 4, verses 1-6. And we're going through quite a transition now in the book of Ephesians. As you recall, in chapters 1 to 3, which we have just studied, we were taught about the salvation we have in Christ. And we looked at God's plan of provision for salvation. We saw that the Father elects, the Son redeems, the Spirit seals. We then looked at Paul's prayer for their understanding of salvation in the latter part of chapter 1. Then in chapter 2, we saw that God regenerates and saves the sinners. We were spiritually dead in bondage to the world, the devil, and the flesh, but we were regenerated by the power of God and saved by grace through faith in Christ alone. And then we saw that God reconciles Jew and Gentile together into one body and into one temple. And so that brought us then to the end of chapter 2, and then in chapter 3... we saw that this mystery of Jew and Gentile being reconciled together was revealed by the Spirit to Paul. He calls it a mystery that couldn't be discovered without revelation. And then once again, chapter 3 closed with a second prayer for the Ephesians. So having seen the salvation we have in Christ in chapters 1 to 3, now in chapters 4 to 6 we come to the second major division of this book, And that is the sanctification we have in Christ. And so we see that Paul builds a solid foundation of doctrine in chapters 1 to 3. And then he gives a solid application of that doctrine in how we live that out in our lives in chapters 4 to 6. So we have teaching and we have application. We have doctrine and we have practice. And that's the way it should always be. A lot of people exhort us to do this or do that. But if you don't provide a thorough doctrinal foundation for why you should do this or that, or you provide an inadequate one, then the understanding of what we're supposed to do and the motivation for what we're supposed to do is gonna be defective, and the ability to carry out well is gonna be defective. In any event, we need to follow the example of Paul here where we have sound doctrinal teaching and then personal practical application. So Paul gives us the why in chapters 1 to 3 and then he gives us the what. in chapters 4 through 6. All right, this is going to be an interesting section. We're going to talk about unity that we need to pursue, the walk that we need to cultivate, the relationships we need to manage, and the warfare we have to fight. And those are kind of the four major divisions of this last half of the book. Well, before we get started reading this, we want to open our time together in prayer. Okay, because I have some kind of problem with my radio. I'll go ahead with the prayer. Gracious Heavenly Father, we thank you for this day and for the blessings of the day. We ask for blessings on those that have a career or job situation that they're dealing with today and throughout the week. Lord, we just pray for travel safety for those that have indicated that they're going to be traveling. Lord, we lift up those that have health issues. There are so many of them, especially as we get older, Lord. We thank you for each and every one that's on the net today. We ask for your blessings upon us. That's Ephesians 4, 1 through 6. There's Steve, W6YSI. Go ahead. Okay, I'll be reading from the American Standard, Ephesians 4, beginning in verse 1. I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, entreat you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling which you have been called. with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing forbearance to one another, in love, being diligent, to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, one Spirit, which is also you recalled in one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of both, with over all through all and in all. - I stopped there for a second. - Steve, great reading. Thank you for that, excellent job. - Okay, any comments on this section, please come down to the pulpit. - Hey, K6, okay. - I got my coffee. - All right, you got your coffee. We got you checked in, Jeff, real good. You got a comment for us, go ahead. Yeah, it sounds like we're all one. Just like a marriage. Right. That's what this sounds like. Oh, sorry about that. Another radio up. We're all one in the Spirit. We're one in the Lord. We're one in faith and one in baptism and one in God the Father. That's how you follow your marriage as well, over. Copy that. And I appreciate that analogy. That's a wonderful analogy because, you know, we are the bride of Christ, aren't we? And so in that sense, we're married to Christ and we have union with him, just like we have these physical marriages here on earth. We have union with our wives or our husbands, as the case may be. And so what forms the basis for this unity? And, you know, I think this is a really important point that you bring up, Jeff, because, you know, a lot of people want to have a false basis for unity. And what we see here is unity is not just accepting anyone, no matter what they believe, and no matter how they behave. That's the false ecumenical unity of liberal Christianity that says, "Oh, we just need to love everyone." And be at peace with everyone. Have unity with everyone. Well, that sounds nice. But the problem is what fellowship has light without this? What communion has Christ with Satan? We have two kingdoms here on this earth. We have the kingdom of darkness, the kingdom of Satan. And we have the kingdom of Christ, the kingdom of light. And within that kingdom of light, there is a doctrinal foundation that we all subscribe to that then constitutes the basis for our unity. And that doctrinal foundation is set out very clearly here in verse 4. One body, one spirit. One hope of our calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and true all and equal. And so it's because of these common things or these things we have in common, those form the basis of our unity. And so, Jeff, I know that you and Patty have a ton of things in common with each other. and that forms the basis of your unity. If you didn't have anything in common with her, or if you believed completely opposite things about most of the affairs of your life, unity would be impossible. And so what creates this kindred spirit and this closeness among us is we all share the same salvation. We all share the same fundamental doctrinal framework that constitutes that salvation. And so unless we have that commonality, we cannot have that unity. So great call there, Jeff. Back to you. You know, that brings up something else as well. And that is the fact that we're not exactly on the same page on everything. But spiritually, we're on the same page. And that's how we have survived 50 years of marriage this June. Gosh, Jeff, what date was it? June 26th. Don't forget that on your 50th, over. Yeah, copy that. And, you know, we're never going to be in perfect agreement on all the things that are at the periphery and that are at the edge. But the core principles, the most important thing, that's what we do have unity around. And so in this Bible study, you know, our unity is that we all believe. in the inerrancy, in the infallibility, in the final authority of the Scriptures. And we all believe that salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. And that forms the core of our unity. And then, you know, we'll have some differences on other issues. Some speak in tongues, some don't, some are dispensational, some are covenantal, some worship on Saturday, some on Sunday, and there's lots of other differences. And that's perfectly fine, because our unity is based on we believe in the authority of the Bible and we believe that Jesus is our Savior, and that we're not saved by our works, we're saved by grace through faith in Christ. So it's the same way in marriage. Wife and I probably agree on 80% of all things, and then 20% she's way different from me. But that's at the edge, that's at the periphery, that's not at the core. And so we have this core identity and unity, and that's described here. in verses 4 through 6. So good comment there, Jeff. Back to you again. Yeah, thank you, Max. This is a great way to start this chapter. It just lets everybody know, listen, we're all on the same page. He's explained it all up through 1 through 3, and here in 4 he said, this is just a recap of 1 through 3. We're all on the same page, folks. Yeah, amen, well said. Okay, other comments on this passage? Please come down to your call point. Alright, let's go back and look at verse 1, okay? He says, "I therefore the prisoner of the Lord." Now, this is the second time he's mentioned he's a prisoner. Notice chapter 3 and verse 1: "For this cause I call the prisoner of Jesus Christ." So that's how we know this is a prison epistle. He wrote this thing while he was in jail. And these jails that they were in were not nearly as nice as the jails that our prisoners live in today. And so even though he was under extremely difficult circumstances, He's thinking of others. And he's not drawing attention to himself. He's thinking of others, and he's thinking about their chief primary needs. And they needed some understanding, and so he wrote chapters 1 to 3. And they needed some practical guidance, and so he wrote chapters 4 through 6. So here's a guy who's in prison, thinking of others, ministering to others. And you know, I know a lot of us on this net are in difficult circumstances. You know, we've got our aches and our pains. We've got our heartbreaks. with broken relationships. You know, we've got financial challenges, perhaps. Lots of troubles in our lives. Even in the midst of our troubles, let's look around us. Let's see who has a need. Let's reach out and meet that need. in the midst of our pain and our sorrows and our troubles, and still think about others. You know, I think about Jesus dying on the cross, right? If there was ever a person who had a right to self-pity, it would have been Jesus on the cross. And yet, what is he doing on the cross? He's thinking about others, right? He's thinking about those that are nailing him to the cross, saying, Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. And then, you know, he's thinking about the thief on the cross. You know, today you will be with me in paradise. And then he's thinking about his mom, you know, who's standing there, and he says to John, "Behold your mother," and to Mary, you know, "Behold your son." And so he's still in the midst of the greatest tragedy and sorrow you could imagine. Thinking about others, meeting the spiritual needs of others, and even the physical needs, by turning his mother over to John. and the need for salvation for those around him. So let's not be self-centered or self-focused. Let's think about others and their needs and strive to meet those needs, even when we're in the midst of suffering. All right, other comments on this passage? Please come down. WB-70, Zell. Roger, WB-70, Zell. Go ahead. We, of course, we've learned this metaphor of walking. And I don't know if we had the opportunity to have a yard break, you know, test one, like in the courtyard of the program. My feeling is, from what I've heard, probably not. They were miserable places. And usually, well, I guess in many prisons, if you didn't have friends and family bringing you food, you basically starved to death, basically. Well, often starved. And so, but walking and the men are worthy of the calling. So here we have a constricted person and of all these tall walking, literally thousands of miles. And those that have been over there were, they had to walk. Oh, the mountainous terrain is just unbelievable. And so that's quite a meaningful metaphor. The other thing of your description of the spectrum of differences, that requires the word which NASB uses, forbearance. That's right, forbearance to one another in love, like your demonstration with Cassie and with Gaylene, you know, in the marriage relationship. We really do believe in the core issues. But there's certainly variations on the theme. With patience showing forbearance to one another in love. That's a huge word, forbearance. Right. Right. And there's things that we forbear with, and there's things we don't forbear with at all. For example, when we looked at 1 Corinthians chapter 5, and we saw the man living in fornication with his father's wife. They were putting up with that. They were forbearing with that. And Paul says, absolutely not. You know, you should have mourned. You should have excommunicated this person out of your church. There are certain things you don't forbear with. There are other things that you do. And so when you have moral corruption, you certainly don't forbear with that. And when you have theological heresy, you don't forbear with that. If someone denies the virgin birth, if someone denies the deity of Christ, if someone denies salvation by faith alone in Christ alone, you don't forbear with that stuff. Those are things that you separate over. So just unity... What Paul is talking about here is not an absolute unity. There are certain things that are required for that unity. And so, for example, one of the things he says here is that there is one faith. And so we all have to share that common faith, that core body of doctrine that constitutes the gospel. And we all have to be saved by faith. So there are certain irreducible minimums that we require, and we don't forbear with those who contradict those. But when it comes to issues of theological error, we may think we're right and somebody else is wrong, but it's not the core issue. So it's, okay, I will forbear with this person. I will allow them to have their position. I'll have my position. We'll love each other. We'll work together in the... and the work of the gospel. And, you know, we'll teach others as brothers and sisters in Christ and show love and patience, recognizing that we didn't get to where we're at theologically in a day. And they're not going to either, and God's going to sanctify each of us so that we better hear the voice of Christ as time goes on and our theology and our behavior get better and better. So there's a place for forbearance. It has to do with maybe error and immaturity. and there's a place where there is no forbearance, and that has to do with gross immorality and theological heresy. Roger, back to you. Yes, Roger, Roger, on that. In fact, Paul, when he reflects in the second letter, it's under the class that that forbearance was classified by Paul as pride. Over. Okay, expand on that. I don't follow you. Go ahead, Roger. Yeah, well, they prided themselves in their forbearance, over. Copy that, yeah. So now the forbearance is born out of pride, not a forbearance born out of humility. Well said. Copy that. And so, you know, it's interesting how the wicked will forbear with everything except righteousness, right? And so... you know, inclusiveness and toleration, except for the folks who believe that, you know, the gospel is what it is, and they're not going to give place, not for an hour, in relation to those who would perverse the gospel. So, yeah, a lot of times forbearance is born out of pride, as opposed to forbearance born out of humility, which has different objects, it has different expressions, and it has different contours and limits. So there is a false forbearance. that is really a compromise of the essence of Christianity. And then there's a true forbearance that is born out of love while waiting for folks to grow and improve in their behavior and in their beliefs. Roger, excellent comment there. Thank you for that. All right, other comments, please come down. KJ7, PVT, go ahead, Mark. ♪ ♪ *Rolling* Yeah, Mark, great comment. that. Yeah, Mark is talking about John chapter 17, verses 20 and 21. And this is Jesus' high priestly prayer in the upper room the night before he was crucified, and he's praying for his disciples. And he says that, he says... Neither pray I for these alone, but for also them which shall believe on me through their word, that they all may be warned, as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be warned in us, that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And so Jesus is praying for this unity among all believers to be seen and expressed and experienced. It is the will of Christ that his people be unified. And Mark, you know, I was talking with somebody the other day, but in virtually every single epistle that Paul wrote, and Peter as well, and John, there are these exhortations to peace and unity and peace and unity and peace and unity over and over and over again. You know, because by nature we have some remaining sin, and that remaining sin can create some hostility and conflict. And, you know, it's something we have to work at. And that's why he says in verse 3 of chapter 4 that we're to be endeavoring, working hard at keeping the unity of the Spirit in the bar of the peace. So we communicate. We communicate with love. We are firm about the essence of the gospel. We're flexible about everything that's not of the essence of the gospel. We're patient. We're kind. We're gentle. We're forbearing. and not allow ourselves and our egos, as Roger was saying, to get in the way of that love that we have for each other. Mark, great comment. Thank you for that. All right, any other comments? Please come down. Mark, go ahead with the follow-up. *Loud Thank you. Hey there Mark, I completely agree with you. Thank you for those comments. And yeah, you know, we do come from different backgrounds, and that can be a source of a real blessing, because people with different perspectives can bring ideas and thoughts to our mind that we never considered before. And, you know, the only way we're going to grow is if we're willing to entertain something different than we previously believed and put it to the test like the Bereans did. You know, they gladly received what Paul was teaching, and then they searched the Scriptures daily to see whether those things were actually true. But while all that was going on, it says they were more noble than those in Thessalonica. and by revealing the truth to us and then by indwelling us. And that's why we feel this kindred spirit with each other, because we all have the Holy Spirit dwelling within us. And what is that Holy Spirit? Among other things, one of the fruits of the Spirit is peace. And so there should be peace. There should be long-suffering. There should be gentleness. All of those things. help create unity. And so let's have that spirit of forbearance. Let's have that spirit of patience and humility and meekness. And, you know, doctrinal controversy can produce good outcomes when it is discussed in a context of humility and meekness and patience and forbearance. I'm thankful for the people who were patient with me as I was making progress in my understanding of the scriptures. It's been a long journey, and we need to have that same spirit of humility and patience and meekness while we're waiting on others to grow as well. All right, real good, Mark. Thank you for that. Okay, other comments. Please come down. Uh, 16TWP70A Roger, WP70A, go ahead Yes, uh, that's... That is what has caused us to endure our situation and I would say thrive, is that there is a came from and the trauma and the challenges of raising an autistic child and the stress of what she's been through. It just gives us that transfer, that ability to put yourself in another person's place and family of origin and what the circumstances are. It's truly, if she hangs on her teacup, God will make a way And it was wonderful to see how, through her experience with the Lord, yesterday she was taken aback with some sort of presentation on Eve and the Church and the parallels there. So, you know, she's arriving at things of basis, but she does not interact, definitely. She just will not dialogue, but it's on her terms as to what she receives through SMART phone. So, you know, it's a different way. It's the duty of being hurt. You know, she's been through a lot. And so when you were talking about that transferring and being aware, that patience, the humility, the humility and gentleness just goes a long ways over time. Yeah, it does, Roger. And, you know, ultimately, you're not responsible for the conclusions she's arrived at and the choices that she makes. And if somebody cuts off your teaching and they insist on getting it from sources that are less than reliable, that's on them. It's not on you. You know, we do what we can. We endeavor to be loving, we endeavor to be patient, but we do speak the truth. Now, of course, we speak it in love, but in the end, our duty is to convey the truth. Our duty is not to persuade them of the truth. That's God's business. And, you know, He'll work in Autumn's heart as He sees fit, and even through these non-orthodox means, if God chooses, He can inform our mind with a proper understanding, And he can work in her heart to cause her to make proper choices. But that's up to him. I reminded Roger of that passage in 1 Corinthians 3 where it says, "I planted and Apollos watered, and God granted the increase." planted water and they go and uproot that and reject that, well, you know, you did what you were supposed to do and you didn't have to let that go. I wanted to return back to something you said earlier, Roger. You talked about Paul perhaps not being able to walk in the prison and you talked about, you know, the metaphor of walking. And, you know, that's an important concept here, verse 1. By therefore the prisoner of the Lord beseech you that you walk worthy of the vocation wherewith you are called. So God issued this effectual call. And, you know, it says in Ephesians, or strike that, 1 Corinthians chapter 1, Let me just read that there, 1 Corinthians chapter 1 and verse 9. It's taking me a minute to turn there. Here it is. Okay, 1 Corinthians 1 and 9. God is faithful by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. So there's the general call of the gospel that falls on the ear of every person inviting them to faith in Jesus. There's the effectual inward call of the Holy Spirit that brings regeneration, and it's hard to get to repentance and faith. Nevertheless, whether there's outward call or there's inward call, it's all into what? Fellowship with Jesus Christ, as it says there in 1 Corinthians 1 and verse 9. Well, our passage is saying we need to walk worthy of that calling. And so what that means is every day we walk in fellowship with Jesus Christ our Lord. And so when people look at us, they should say, that guy's walking with Jesus. And we have to ask ourselves the question, if somebody looked at my life, would they say, oh, he's walking in fellowship with Jesus. And that's what it means to walk worthy of this vocation. What does Jesus teach? That's what we believe. What is Jesus instructive to do? That's what we practice. And that's what it means to walk worthy of that calling. If a guy had a calling as a carpenter, what would it mean to walk worthy of being a carpenter? Well, it means that... He would know how to saw a board straight. It would mean he would know how to make a wall that was a plumb. It would mean he knew how to make a building that was square. It would mean he knew what kind of nail to use in what situation. And we would say, that guy is walking worthy of his calling as a carpenter. Well, here our calling is to be in fellowship with Jesus Christ our Lord. And so we need to walk in a way that is worthy... of that calling. And so the people would look at us and say, what they would say to the carpenter, he's a worthy carpenter. You know, he's worthy of that title of being a carpenter. And here this person is now worthy of this title of being a Christian who is in fellowship with Jesus Christ. And when you look at the life of Jesus... You know, he was very patient and forbearing with those who were struggling and had humility and were seeking to learn. And he was very abrupt and harsh and rejecting of those who had heretical doctrine and who were living contrary to the teaching of the scriptures. So he was very patient with the woman at the well. He had no patience at all with the Pharisees. and said to them, how can you hope to achieve the damnation of hell? He was very straightforward with them. So there's a time for being very meek and being very patient, and there's a time to stand up and say, that's far, no further. And so we need to understand that balance. We need to understand what it means to walk worthy of someone who is in fellowship with Jesus, behaving like he does, thinking like he does in each situation. All right, any other comments? So these are like primitive doctrinal statements. I think earlier Kevin had talked about certain passages being primitive hymns. And by primitive, we don't mean poor, we just mean from a long time ago.
