### Bible Study Summary: Galatians 4:12-20

#### Introduction

This Bible study focused on Galatians 4:12-20, a passage where the apostle Paul addresses the Galatians, expressing his concern over their changing attitudes and the influence of false teachers. The study was led by a group of participants including Daryl, W7AOT, and others, with a strong emphasis on prayer and discussion. The group prayed for various needs, including the Holy Spirit's guidance, a girl undergoing radiation treatment, and Roger's church prayer meeting.

#### Paul's Appeal to the Galatians

Paul opens his appeal with a heartfelt plea to the Galatians, asking them to become like him in the liberty of the grace of God (Galatians 4:12). He recalls his initial visit to them, noting that despite his physical ailments, they received him as an angel of God (Galatians 4:13-14). This memory serves as a poignant reminder of the deep bond and mutual respect that once existed between Paul and the Galatians. However, Paul's concern is evident as he questions whether his truthful teaching has turned him into an enemy in their eyes (Galatians 4:16).

**Themes:**
- **Liberty in Christ:** The importance of understanding and embracing the freedom that comes with the grace of God.
- **Physical Suffering and Ministry:** The idea that physical ailments should not hinder one's commitment to serving God and others.
- **Truth and Relationships:** The tension between speaking the truth and maintaining relationships.

**Discussion Questions:**
- How does the concept of liberty in Christ impact your daily life?
- How can we maintain our commitment to serving others despite physical limitations?
- In what ways can speaking the truth affect our relationships? How can we balance truth-telling with love?

#### False Teachers and Spiritual Warfare

The passage highlights the presence of false teachers who are attacking both the doctrine and the messenger. These individuals use ad hominem attacks to undermine Paul's credibility, seeking to isolate the Galatians from his teachings (Galatians 4:16-18). This situation mirrors the tactics of cult leaders, who often seek to isolate individuals from other influences and sources of truth. The group discussed the importance of not limiting relationships and information to a single source, emphasizing the need for a balanced and diverse spiritual diet.

**Themes:**
- **False Teaching:** The dangers of false teaching and the importance of discernment.
- **Isolation and Control:** The tactics used by false teachers and cult leaders to control and isolate individuals.
- **Spiritual Warfare:** The ongoing battle for hearts and minds and the importance of prayer in this fight.

**Discussion Questions:**
- How can we recognize and guard against false teaching in our lives?
- What are some practical ways to ensure we are not isolated from diverse sources of truth?
- How does prayer play a role in defending against spiritual attacks?

#### Love and Selflessness

Paul's appeal to the Galatians also touches on the theme of love and selflessness. He reflects on the deep love and selflessness the Galatians once had for him, expressing his desire to see Christ formed in them (Galatians 4:19-20). This passage encourages believers to lay down their lives for others, just as Christ did for us. The group discussed the importance of being willing to do anything for others, emphasizing the selfless love that Christ exemplified.

**Themes:**
- **Selfless Love:** The importance of laying down one's life for others.
- **Christlikeness:** The goal of having Christ formed in us and how we can work towards this.
- **Perseverance:** The need to persevere in our faith and service despite challenges.

**Discussion Questions:**
- How can we cultivate selfless love in our lives?
- What does it mean to have Christ formed in us? How can we work towards this?
- How can we persevere in our faith and service despite the challenges we face?

#### Closing

The study concluded with a prayer led by Jerry, 870R, thanking God for the insights gained and asking for His continued guidance. Participants were invited to join the study daily at 6:00 a.m. for further scripture reading, understanding, and application. The group expressed gratitude for the opportunity to study God's Word together and encouraged each other to return to the frequency for regular amateur use.

**Themes:**
- **Community and Fellowship:** The importance of studying God's Word together and the value of community in faith.
- **Daily Devotion:** The importance of setting aside time daily for scripture reading and reflection.
- **Gratitude and Fellowship:** The value of expressing gratitude and fostering fellowship among believers.

**Discussion Questions:**
- How can we maintain a consistent practice of daily devotion?
- What are some ways we can foster fellowship and community in our faith?
- How can we express gratitude in our daily lives and in our study of God's Word?

This Bible study provided a rich and engaging discussion on the themes of liberty in Christ, false teaching, love and selflessness, and the importance of community and fellowship. Participants were encouraged to continue their study and application of these themes in their daily lives.

Yeah, Daryl, W7AOT. Okay, thank you for that. Daryl, W7AOT, good morning to you. How are you doing, Daryl? All right, well, good, Daryl; we got you checked in. Thank you for being there. All right, well, good. I'm going to take a look at the radio. I appreciate hearing your voice and I really enjoy your fellowship there, Daryl. Uh, back to Puzzle 5, Yankee, thank you for that relay back. I got you checked in and I assume Sandy W has another SAB, is that also correct? Uh, Jerry, good morning. Uh, good morning, any prior requests back? No, sir, thank you. Alright, I think there was another station that was trying to check in there also. Other station, please come down. Well, we have a prayer meeting this morning, and I'd certainly love to have prayers for the Holy Spirit to give us building faith experiences, for sure. Copy that, copy that. And how's our girl doing with the radiation treatment? You know, I think your prayers have really been a blessing. She hasn't experienced a vast amount of weakness yet. So, anyway, thank you for your prayers for us daily. Copy that real good, okay. All right, I want to get my SDR shared for a minute. I want to acknowledge Peter, KJ7BA. Good morning, Peter. See you there on the Utah SDR. And let's see what else do we have here. There's Brian, KJ7PWM. Peter says good morning to everyone. Good morning to you, Peter. Brian, KJ7PWM, if you're on your radio, come back to me. Good morning, this is KJ7PWM. the website here in a minute. As soon as we get all the check-ins done. Okay, that's Brian, KJ7 PWM. All right, any other stations, please come down. KB7, is that a chance? Okay, there's Kevin, KB7, is that a chance? Good morning, Kevin, how are you doing? Good morning, Max. All right, we're going to open in prayer here in a minute. Now we've got a guy who knows how to manipulate stuff on the net. And in particular, the archives have been updated. And Brian, what he does is he not only has the audio recording there now, he also has an AI summary that's written, which is really good. So if you go to the archive list and just click on any of those days that are there, you'll see what he has done, if that's of interest to you. And a lot of times people miss the net, but they're able to go to the archives and listen to the audio recording and catch up on what was said that day. So Brian, KJ7BWM, thank you for that upgrade. And there will be other upgrades going on. And so we're going to modernize the site a little bit. And so anyway, that's much appreciated. So that's a resource that the West Coast Bible Study has for all of you. And that is our website, and that's westcoastbiblestudy.com, West Coast Bible Study, all one word. All right, so that tips us up on that. We want to open our time together in prayer. And so Jeff, AK6OK, if you could open prayer for us, that'd be much appreciated. Thank you, Matt. Good morning to everybody. It was great. Thank you so much for your wonderful restoration and our family. Thank you for the people around the round table here this morning. There's a lot of them and it's so good to see this growing every week. We see more and more. and uh, please guide us along. Um, I've been having trouble understanding some of these passages. Help us to be able to take all of this in and understand it more and remember it. And thanks to Max and his family who put them in getting up so early every morning. We're blessed in Jesus' name. Amen. Amen. Thank you so much for that, Jeff. Jerry, are you back with us? Okay, no worries. Okay, all you guys, prayer requests for the word I ran. For that to come to a peaceful conclusion. from Steve W6YSI, I think you might have gotten that one, and then Roger W7ZL. He's having a prayer meeting in his church this morning. He just asked prior for the prayer meeting at his church that it would go well. All right, real good. Thank you for that, Jerry. Appreciate you representing us before the throne of grace. All right, our passage today is Galatians chapter 4, verses 12 through 20. That's Galatians 4:12 through 20. And this interesting passage, because we know that the church at Galatia was under attack from false teachers who were perverting the gospel of Christ, as Paul says back over there in chapter 1 and in verse 7. And so he's been establishing... The biblical doctrine of justification by faith alone in Christ alone. And by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. That's been the theme. However, it's the nature of false teachers that they don't just corrupt the doctrine as bad as that is. they also have to attack the teachers who are teaching the true doctrine. And so the subversion of the Galatians is not merely a matter of false teaching. It's also a matter of ministerial manipulation and ministerial abuse. And so not only is their doctrine evil, their method of dealing with the Galatians was evil as well. And so that's what Paul is addressing here. They attack the true message of the gospel with false teaching, and they attack the true messenger of the gospel with slander and character assassination. And we saw Paul dealing with this extensively in 2 Corinthians, which we just went through. where he had to spend practically the whole book defending himself against these false, slanderous accusations, because this is the old argumentum ad hominem, a little Latin there for you. Argumentum ad hominem is just an argument against a man, right? So when you can't answer somebody's argument, you have to attack the person and label them with all sorts of pejorative terms. to make people as confident in their character and their qualifications, and then their message can just be dismissed without having to answer it, because after all, look who it came from, right? So that's what they're doing. It's an age-old technique, and people still use it today. And, you know, that's what Paul's combating here in this passage. So with a little background there, let's read this passage. And, Roger, I would like for you to read for us. I know you read out of the New American Standard. That might be a little easier for folks to understand. There, the King James here would use some rather unusual language. All right, Roger, that would be some vizial. If you could read for us, please, Galatians 4, verses 12 through 20. That's 12 through 20 there, Roger. This is WB7VZL. Using a 1965 New American Standard Bible, it was not meant to be smoothly read compared to more updated, but this is a kind of rigid translation, trying to be best, putting an English word for a Greek word. So here we go. I beg of you brethren, become as I am, for I also have become as you are. You have done me no wrong, but you know that it was because of a bodily illness that I preached the gospel to you the first time. and that which was a trial to you in my bodily condition, you did not despise or loathe, but you received me as an angel of God, as Christ himself. Where then is that sense of blessing you had? For I bear you witness that if possible, you would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me. Have I therefore become your enemy by telling you the truth? They eagerly seek you, not commendably, but they wish to shut you out in order that you may seek them. But it is good always to be eagerly sought in a commendable manner, and not only when I am present with you, My children with whom I am again in labor until Christ is formed in you, but I could wish to be present with you now and to change my tone, for I am perplexed about you. I talk about revealing his emotions here, and probably we trust and based upon the fact that really only the Holy Spirit really knew about you, Max. Roger, thank you for that excellent reading. Really appreciate that a lot. And I would like to acknowledge Carol, KK7TPO. Carol saw you show up there on the Utah SDR. Appreciate you being there with us. All right. Any comments on this section that Roger has read to us, please come down here. Call right. Is that an action? Kevin, KB7Z, go ahead. 57, but I said, I'm going to get things started here. Yeah, we see a transition here in Paul. You know, he's to this point dealt pretty toughly with the Galatians because he dealt with a serious issue in a perversion of the gospel, as you pointed out, Max, as he is Adam about an age prior to his one back of life. For the Hebrews to Abraham to make the point that it's faith is on our part, and it's grace on God's part that brings us salvation. And though he's really provided a brilliant theological argument, but he's not simply just an apologist for the faith. He's also a shepherd and has a heart of a pastor. And here we see the transition really to, I think, the heart of Paul as he, first time in this letter, calls them brethren, or brothers. And it says, he's a genetic term meaning brothers and sisters. He's speaking to all of them. And to become more familiar with Paul's letters, his epistles, he often starts the letters with that affectionate expression of brethren. But here, he's a ways into it. But he appeals to them, first of all, as brothers. and a call to them to be like him as he has been like them. And it sounds maybe a little bit like a riddle, but it's really not. What he's talking about to them is to be like me in the liberty of the grace of God in the faith. You know, it's not about keeping these rules. It's all about faith and receiving the gift of God's grace. And as I became IQ, I set aside all the dietary laws. I enjoyed the Greek and Roman food. I didn't, you know, just eat kosher. I didn't eat the laws of the Sabbath. I didn't eat all the worship of God. I didn't ask anybody to be circumcised. I, you know, it was... strictly about faith. And so I want you to, you know, as I set aside those restrictions in the light of the grace of God, and as you pointed out there that they recently, the new covenant, then I want you to also set aside and be like me and live free in the liberty of the gospel there. I'll stop there for now. Take these sevens out of town. and then he, that last phrase, you've not injured me at all. In other words, I'm not offended at you, but don't be offended at me. And of course, in that launch, and into the rest of this discussion, how he talks in those subsequent verses about how the relationship used to be. And, you know, whenever there's a breakdown in a relationship, you know, it's useful to say, okay, we're having this conflict right now in the moment, but let's look back over the last two or three years of our relationship and remember how good it was, remember the peace and the unity we had between us. And let's go back to that. And, you know, resolve this conflict in light of how we used to deal with each other and view each other. Because, you know, it's really easy in a moment to get upset about this or that. And we need to put that in a context. And that's the context of what that relationship has been like over the years. And so that's what Paul is doing here. As Kevin said, not only is he asking them to behave, with reference to the gospel, like he behaved, but also to view him as he viewed them. And he said, I'm not mad at you. I don't feel injured by you. You know, don't be mad at me. Don't let these false teachers pervert you. your view of who I am and what my conduct and character is. Kevin, great comment there on verse 12. Thank you. All right, other comments, please come in. I have WB7, Lisa, and Roger. Please go ahead. I am sure all of us have experienced the Holy Spirit feeding back to us as Christians. to respond to people that are outwardly disgusting. I mean, you know, judging from the way they are. And I am just like him. I'm shocked at how Kevin, that Kevin Paul is, with his recognition of how bad he was. and of course he mentions it in verse 13 bodily illnesses but his debut like if I was going to preach somewhere and I was had a Kleenex with me and coughing You know, it's just an incredible description, verse 14, that was a trial to you in my bodily condition, and you did not despise our love, but you received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus himself. I think that's an amazing passage for Paul to recognize that they overlooked all the outward issues. And he is absolutely amazed as well. It's an astounding passage. And he certainly encourages us if we're with the Holy Spirit in our hearts that we can make an impression even though our bodies are a mess of it. Yeah, copy that, Roger. You know, this passage has been quite the rebuke to me, personally. You know, verse 13, you know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first. And so Paul's talking about his own personal infirmity of the flesh. And he's saying, you know, I had medical issues. But he said, I didn't let the medical issues stop me from engaging in ministry, reaching out to people, and serving Christ. And, you know, so often it's the case that, you know, we get a little bit sick or we're a little bit tired or maybe we're a little bit achy. And we use that as an excuse to pamper ourselves. and to withdraw from ministry and to say, well, you know, I'm unable to do this because, you know, I have this little twinge of pain or I have this little upsetness or whatever. And I'm not saying we should go to church when we have the flu, okay? There's definitely a time to say, I am too sick to minister for the Lord or to be among God's people. You're not talking about that. But what I'm talking about is here's the condition Paul had which was very limiting to him. Let's say he had back pain, okay? And a lot of people will use something like that as an excuse not to minister, or maybe they're in a wheelchair, and they think, well, you know, because I'm in a wheelchair, I can't do anything. Or, you know, maybe some other thing that's not going to affect other people, but it does hinder us. Can I still serve Christ even with this limitation I have? And am I using this as an excuse for not serving Jesus when I really could? And, you know, I know for myself as I age and as my, you know, mental acuity declines, and my body doesn't respond with the same kind of balance and various things that I used to have? Is that an excuse for me personally to stop traveling and preaching and stop getting up early in the morning and doing Bible study and all of those things? And I think we live in a culture where we tend to pamper ourselves and make excuses as to why we can't. And I think we need to ask ourselves, why can't I? Why shouldn't I? And then to go forward with that. So let's push through the infirmities of old age. Let's keep on ministering as fast as we can, as much as we can. And instead of using illness as an excuse, let's push through that and still reach out and serve the Lord so Roger that really spoke to me and to my need to persevere to push through to keep going and to serve as best I can in spite of whatever physical limitations I may be experiencing back here there Roger Oh yes, oh my. It must have been so terrible that Paul had missed this so candidly, and yet they received him like an angel of God, as Christ himself. What strong language! And then, because this really relates to my visitation on Easter Sunday, where I hadn't seen Terry for several years. Just the way I did. And when I got there, the first thing I noticed is that she was missing an eye. And I found out in my visitation with her, that still the same sweet lady in the need of the grace of God, she had had eye cancer. They had removed her eyeball and had experienced radiation. And I knew nothing about this until Sunday. And so here I was looking at a lady who had her eye plucked out. There's just 15 talks about it. And what a description. Here's a comment. Give it. You plucked out your eyes and given them to me. How about that, Maxwell? That is impressive, Roger. And, you know, I had a guy come up to me once in my church and say to me, what about organ donation? Is that legitimate? And I turned to him through this passage and I said, you know, if organ donation were possible back in Paul's day, he would have commended that. And so I've always been an organ donor. And, of course, I'm not going to go handing out body parts willy-nilly at this stage in my life. But at the end of life, if somebody can use something out of my body to make their life better, then I'm all for that. And so, yeah, Roger, this is a situation, I mean, when you were standing there looking at that woman, would you have taken out one of your eyes and given them to her? You know, that's, we just recoil at the thought, right? But Paul was using this as an explanation of the degree and the depth of love and selflessness. that they had towards him, the degree of appreciation they had with him, that they would do anything for him is the idea. And so that's the kind of love we need to have between teachers and those who are taught, is that Paul was willing to lay down his life for them, and they were willing to lay down their lives for him. Yeah, I give you seven zeddies and not very excellent comments. I couldn't agree more. On all this, on the points made here, you know, there are some false teachers out there that would say, well, you know, if you just had enough faith. God would have healed Paul. What do you mean Christians that are ill? It's just a lack of faith. Well, no, we know from the Word of God that is heresy as well. And Paul, the very fact that he came to Galatia in the first place may have been because of these infirmities that he's speaking about. Now, he writes later to Timothy, who's from this area. I think it's 2 Timothy, what is it, 310, I believe, where he talks about going through these areas and, you know, all that he went through. And, uh, yes, it's probably likely. You know, he could have been, who knows, in eye condition. That could have been, you know, a pussy or something. You know, there's other speculations. But he was not in good shape. And apparently, his appearance was somewhat offensive as well because of the condition. He was in, and he, you know, we just read about him in 2 Corinthians 12, what, 7 or 3? He went up 12, 7, I think, where he talks about, you know, he asked God... multiple times, three times I think he says there, for relief from this, that God says, "My grace is sufficient." And here's, I think here's one of the important principles here, well two, one, is that all allowed God to use him, even with his physical ailments as they are. You know, we as believers are sometimes going to go through life as injured athletes, if you will. There's going to be things that beset us. And as you point out there, Max, are you going to let that stop you from being faithful? Are you going to let that stop you from sharing the good news, being a messenger, as Paul described as an angel of the Lord, a messenger of the Lord for the good news? Are you going to let that stop you? Well, you could. But God would not have us do so. And there's going to be periods of life where we struggle with things, and it might be physical things. And Paul said, like I said, the problem is likely to get you here, it was diminished. You know, we see in chapter 6, he kind of points to that as well, that I wrote, "Hey, I'm going to miss myself in great big letters for you." But that's something I can be familiar with. And I'll tell you what. There is, you know, they recognize that that did not diminish his heart, his love to share the good news, his intellect. It did not. who Paul was as a person and as a Christian. And they received that message of the Gospel and embraced Paul and reciprocated with the love that you would expect from new believers. And what a lesson. And I just kind of, from my gut feeling, had gone through what Paul had, but I remember when I was called me a pastor before church there. You know, and I was really blind myself. I was somewhat surprised. But, you know, the whole congregation... His heart is to be faithful and true to him and serve the others. Katie 7, many thanks. Yeah, Kevin, thank you for sharing that. For those of you who don't know, Kevin's legally blind, and yet he continues to write books. He continues to, um... publish a website. He continues to minister in his church, and so here's an example of a guy who's in the same situation Paul was in. In many respects, he continues to say to the Lord, Kevin, thank you for the fact that through the infirmity of the flesh... you continue to preach the gospel. Good for you. All right, let's move on in our passage here. We're starting to run out of time. There's a transition here in verse 15. And the transition is, Where is then the blessedness you spoke of? So I bear your record that had it been possible, you would have plucked out your own eyes and given them to me. Now verse 16, am I therefore become your enemy because I tell you the truth? And so, you know, we talked about this wonderful, loving relationship between Paul and the Galatians. And then he says something's changed you. Now you're viewing me as an enemy. And you seem to have abandoned that love and affection that you had for me before. Now what was the cause of this? Well, these false teachers that were coming in and trying to drive a wedge between Paul and the Galatians. And I've had that happen to me. Every minister of the gospel has many times where people come in and try to drive a wedge between the pastor and the people and create a division and disaffection and ultimately a separation of relationships. And so that's what Paul is talking about here. Whereas before there was a solacidness in their relationship, now there's suspicion and withdrawal. There's, you know, a hostility. And he talks about what the source of this is in verse 17 when he says, They zealously desire to draw your affections to themselves, but not because of good motives. They seek to exclude you from any contact with any teacher but themselves. Back to this section, any comments, points, comments? Alright, well, let me talk a little bit more about verse 17 then. Okay, so what's going on here, verse 17? is that, you know, there's a lot of people who have the attitude, "Well, if you're my friend, you can't be anybody else's friend, or else you're not my friend." Right? And it's the nature of Christian love that we love lots of people, and if I love George, that doesn't take away from my love for Jeff. Okay? Yeah, I can love Jeff with all my heart, and then I can turn around and love George with all my heart, and that doesn't diminish the love I have for Jeff. Right? And so it's the nature of Christian love that we love everyone. And, you know, we don't say, well, you know, because love is not a zero-sum game. Like, if you give love to one person, then that means you have to be taking it away from another person. That's how Christianity works. Love is not a zero-sum game. The more you love, the more love is multiplied, right? Well, that's not the way of the cultic leaders. The cultic leaders say, you know, all of your affection, all of your focus, all of your loyalty needs to be to me. and you can't have any love, affection, or loyalty for anyone else. I need to be the sole source of your teaching. And it's the nature of cult leaders. And one of the things they do is they have this radical doctor separation where if you're not part of our cult, then we don't even have anything to do with you. And so they cut people off from family members, they cut people off from friends, they cut people off from former pastors who were a blessing in their life and maybe even led them to Christ. And it's like, you need to focus just on me. And so cult leaders always limit the information and the relationships that you have. Now Paul talks about the fact that he's not asking for that. and that's the nature of biblical Christianity. So anyway, he's really concerned about their spiritual welfare. Anybody want to comment on verse 19 and 20? Please come down. Okay, thanks. Okay. Jeff, thank you. Okay, go ahead, brother. Yeah, back in the 70s, I was a police officer in Davis, California. And one of our jobs was working against this cult Scientology alarm hub. And actually holding people against their will. She was a doctor. She was a doctor with the philosophy that they stopped these people from living their lives. They were not children for one. They were just athletes taken from their parents and so on. And we were constantly out there trying to extract people out of that, that's what we take home with us, that code. And I think that's sort of what Paul was talking about here. That's an extreme example, but it was a 3 in 2 reality back then, remember? Yeah, well said. And that is a classic example. You remember Jonathan Applewhite, you know, in the comic cult, you know, where they all committed suicide. And, of course, there was Jonestown, right? Down there in Guyana where, what, 900 people, Jones talked them into committing suicide. So, yeah, these cults are passionate. And one of the things they do, whether it's Scientology or any of these other cults, is that they say, you know, they cut people off from anything that would correct or expose the false realities that they're imposing on them. And so, thank you for your work in rescuing people out of that cult. Because Scientology is a terrible cult. It's really, really destructive to people. And basically, they financially abuse them, they brainwash them, and they literally turn them into slaves. And so this is exactly what Paul is talking about. And thank you for that real-world illustration that is being right in front of our eyes. You know the hard crystal cliffs that used to hang out at the airport, same thing. We had the Bhagwan Sri Rajneesh right here in Oregon, same thing. So the Pali books are always the same, and that's what Paul is addressing here. All right, other comments, please come down. Is that it, again? Is that it, again? Go ahead, Kevin. that you determined that, you know, this is such an important issue. And I love this because you definitely see the heart of Paul here. And, you know, you remind him, you know, when you are saved, and the burden of your sin is lifted, and the joy you feel, the excitement, because you have been freed from that burden. You have been born again new. You are sealed and have the blessing of the Holy Spirit. You have been changed, and that weight... that comes off of you when you know Jesus as Savior and as love. And then, to come along then later and say, "Oh, well, that's wonderful, but now, here, let me tell you, you've got to lift your promise here. You've got to follow." It didn't take away that experience of what they, you know, at the time of salvation. But it can rob a believer of the joy of that salvation. Now I've got to keep all these rules. Well, that's not Christianity at all. And I just love 1 Corinthians 16 because he just cuts to the chase there. And it is that love, that joy. you know, that salvation brings, and that liberty. It's not about a list of rules. That Holy Spirit will begin to work in you and change your focus, change your priorities. And again, that's the brilliance of God also in His churches and the fellowship and accountability we have with one another in walking in Christ. and walking in the spirit, if you will, and walking in the word. But it's not a list of rules. And Paul just, in part, says so beautifully with that expression of that brotherly love. Thank you, Karen. You're right. It's a hit. It's faith in Jesus and not faith in my performance, uh, to some rules. So thank you for that. Alright, uh, verse 19 and 20: "My little children, of whom I travail in birth again, until Christ be formed in you, I desire to be present with you and to change my voice. For I stand in doubt of you." And so here Paul, uh, uh, pictures himself metaphorically as a mother giving birth. And that's what we do when we preach the gospel. We recognize that we're trying to bring about, if you will, the new birth for people to be born again. And so that's one of the powerful metaphors that's used to describe conversion. is a new birth. And in fact, in Isaiah 53, it says that he shall see the crown of hell in his soul and be satisfied for Jesus. As it were, on the cross, we're going through birth pains to bring to birth a multitude which no man can number. into the kingdom of God. So this metaphor is frequently used here. And you say, look, I went through the process once of seeing you born. Do I have to go through that process again because you really were stillborn? You know, you weren't born alive, and now I've got to lead you to Christ a second time. is the idea here. He says, you know, I really, he says, I'm doubting. Were you genuinely saved? If you're genuinely saved, how can you be going off after this false gospel? Don't you remember what the true gospel was? Don't you remember what I taught you, and now you're going to go off after these false teachers? And you know, it's the nature of a true believer, okay? Jesus says in John chapter 10, "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me, and the voice of a false shepherd they will not follow." And while a true believer can get off into the weeds in terms of the bad doctrine, it's not going to be long before he goes, "This is not the voice of Christ I'm hearing here," and he goes back to the truth. And so... That's what's happening here. And he's using all these arguments and all these reasons to say to them, "Look, come back to the original gospel that you originally embraced and believed in and rejoiced in, and you've been drawn away now, that's the other voice of Christ. You need to come back, because if you don't come back, then you're unsafe." and if you don't come back, then you're going to have to get saved, and I've got to go through the process of bringing you to the new birth all over again through the preaching of the gospel. So anyway, he's going to then continue his theological argument in verses 21 and following, which we're going to be looking at tomorrow. But that's the argument of our passage, alright? We are clear out of time. It is time for us to pray. Jerry, 870R is going to lead us in prayer, but before he does that, are there any final prayer requests? Please come down and call us. Alright, Jerry, 870R, go ahead and close your prayer portal. Hello, I'm Fred, the car owner here. And I'm going to tell you what this thing really is. It's a brand new ride. It's called the JG. My brother said he'd be ready to jump out of the water. And I said, what? What's the question? I said, we're going to ask people. Thank you all for giving so much information to each one of us over this very fantastic flight. I really appreciate that. And, um, if you just a second, let me get my SGR turned off, Jerry. There we go, got it done. All right, Jerry, thank you so much for that prayer. Really appreciate that a great deal. This is Max, WB7MAX, at control of the West Coast Bomb Up Study. I want to thank all the stations who checked in this morning and those who stood by to give us a clear operating frequency. We meet here seven days a week at 6:00 a.m. in order to read the scriptures, understand their meaning, message, and application. and to pray for grace and mercy to be able to live out what we have learned and for God to meet the needs of those that are in our circle of fellowship. I'll be returning this frequency now to regular amateur use. This is WB7MX. I'll be clear and standing by. I don't know what you're talking about. be shown how much he should suffer for Jesus. And this passage is called in agony and suffering because he's having to feed up the fruit of of the Judaizers and in a really real sense he was one of them before Damascus and the irony of that so he he knows that world all too well that of a Yeah, well said, Roger. And, yeah, that passage in Acts 9 and verse 16, I will show him how great things he must suffer for my name's sake. And, you know, we tend to think of suffering, Roger, in terms of pains in our body. But I'll tell you the pains in our heart. and in our souls and in our emotions are so much greater. You know, just like Jesus suffered on the cross, physically that was terrible. I don't want to minimize that at all, but the suffering he experienced by the rejection of God, his Father, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" And the suffering in his soul is far worse than in his body. And so here's Paul. Yeah, he's got suffering in his body. He's got this eye ailment. And in 2 Corinthians, we read a couple of lists there about him being beaten and being shipwrecked and being stoned and having deprivation of food and clothing and warmth and shelter and all those things that physically happened to his body. And then he says, and beside all these things, the care of all the church is coming upon me daily. And so I think, Roger, he hurts way worse from the Galatians going sideways. I'm following these false teachers, and this eye problem ever hurts him. And I know for myself, my deepest wounds are not physical. My deepest wounds are spiritual and in your soul and in your heart. And when you've seen people that you love turn on you, attack you, and reject you. And so that's what Paul was experiencing here at the hands of these people, one of whom he used to be. And as you say, you know, when you're unsaved, the setting is saved, Rajasthan 17, right? So I know what it's like to be unsaved, and I know the attitude. I know the kind of hostility and the darkness and all of that. So when you see, you know, unsafe, false teachers trying to heal you, you go, well, that's what I used to be. And you understand that. You don't accept it. You know, you don't... You have to war against this, you sure understand because you were once there and Paul as you said was certainly once there. Back to you then Roger. Oh well described, very beautifully described. Yeah, you know. You know what the life of what this is like. You know what this is like. You know what this is like. the non-pure approach to the gospel. And where I talked to Craig's mother yesterday as well, and encouraging her, and her talking about a pain in the heart. to give birth to one who has gone from the freedom of the gospel? If he ever knew that, oh my, that's a big question. Like Paul was saying, when he goes back to the Bible, so to speak, goes back to those elemental issues of the world, that are trying to earn their way through work and all the rich man, and then to actually accept himself as a follower of Ignatius Marauder, the... absolute 180 degree away from a Protestant gospel perspective, you know, thanks to vacancy and obviously instability. Max, I've got another pile on here. Yeah, go ahead, Roger. Well, there was a lot of stuff, and when I preached this sermon for the communion service, I was directed by going through a John 17 with Alistair Begg. For the first time in my life, I focused in on Diocese. Diotrephes in 3 John he didn't elaborate much but he caught my attention and when I was studying him to Diotrephes he had that same attitude in verse 9 of 3 John he loved to be first among them now this this is This guy is a bull in the china shop of this church. He wants to be first and does not accept what we say to a crisis of authority. He is a hedgehog. He must be 80 plus right now, 80 years old, and he's got this young guy, Tracy, who thinks he's really in on that. He wants to be the first, you know, the first sin. It's the mother of all sins to want to be first, the best, and distinguished, and lacks humility for sure. And I couldn't help but think about Paul, excuse me, about John who has to write about him, Agaius, in this letter. And I imagine John was thinking, well, when I was young, I had a mother in Matthew 20. who wanted to have me and my brother first in Jesus' kingdom, on the left and the right of Jesus. And then Jesus makes his remarkable statement at the end of Matthew 20. about the principles of the kingdom, of being servant to all. So here we have St. John in his old age, writing to this guy that wants to be in charge totally, polluted, spirituality. And he comes back on you about what you once were before you really met the principles of Jesus, of it. Yeah, well said. Man, you touch on some really important points. It's often been said that Diotrephes was the first pope in the church. And that's what he was behaving like. I am the authority. Everybody listen to me. I'm infallible. Don't listen to anybody else. I'm the sole source of spiritual truth. And so what a contrast between Doctrophae, who has a preeminence among them, and then you're right there in Revelation, you turn to Revelation chapter 1 and verse 9. John says, I, John, who am also your brother and companion in tribulation. and in the kingdom of patience of Jesus. And so here's John. He could be, you know, trumpeting, you know, who he is and his importance. And, you know, he wrote the Gospel of John. And he wrote these other letters. And he's an apostle, blah, blah, blah. But no, he calls himself our brother. And so he puts himself right down on the same plane as the other believers. Did he have apostleship? You bet he did. Did he have authority and wisdom and experience and knowledge and maturity? And is he high, far above them beyond any of us? You bet he did. But he didn't pray to them, he didn't trumpet them, he didn't give them for self-promotion. And that's the nature is that, you know, as you said, Jesus says, If you believe in the greatest among you, let him be servant of all. And one of my favorite verses, Roger, Mark 10, 45 says, where Jesus says, "Even a son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many." So it's the nature of true teachers, that they make themselves a servant to those that they are teaching, instead of making themselves a master or a lord. And, you know, the other passage that immediately pops to mind is 1 Peter 5, where Peter says, "The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, to put themselves right on the level of the other elders, and witness to the sufferings of Christ, and also partake of the glory that should be revealed." to the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly, not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind. Now here it is, verse 3, 1 Peter 5. Neither is being lords over God's heritage, but being example to the flock. And so whenever you see this attitude of lordship, you know, I'm above you guys. you know you've got a doctor who's on your hands. And while certainly it's legitimate to recognize that this person is more mature than that person, this person has more knowledge than that person, this person has more experience than that person, that doesn't intrinsically make them a master in terms of self-exaltation, self-importance, and practically a worship. of those that are in a leadership position, because no true leader wants to be worshipped. No true leader wants people to implicitly trust him. They want people to implicitly trust Jesus Christ. And with reference to himself, it's like, "I'm your servant, I'm preaching the word of God to you, yes, I have some knowledge and experience here, and therefore I'm qualified to do this." But in the end, the Scriptures is a source of authority, not any man. and every person is equal in Christ Jesus. And while there are differences in roles and offices, that doesn't change the fundamental equality and indeed the spirit of servitude where we place ourselves under others that the gospel calls us to. That's Peter Rutherford. Oh, thank you, Bob. I have no disease next to the passage of the scripture. And, yeah, that passage of the Peter 5.3 was just perfect. Well, then, the next time I college, the book I'll have to read. I'll tell you who I'm looking at. Um, yes, I am. I'm loaded further thinking that. It's really been great to hear these passages. And, uh, you know, I can tell you the more the louder. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You, after all those years, you wind up having to interact with all those passages. And that's the beauty of doing consecutive expository preaching is you cover the whole scope of biblical revelation on any topic. And that's kind of been my stock in trade is preaching through books of the Bible. and it exposes you to passages you never would have thought of, with reference to subject matters. You know, it's just like when I was preaching to Galatians, right? And I came to this passage on, you know, Paul saying, "You would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me." That was the first time I ever thought about, well, there's a lot of transplusion going on there. That Paul's committing and encouraging. And it just gave me a solid ethical answer for the subject of should we let other people chop up our bodies and distribute body parts to other folks? Is that a moral thing to do? Is that a biblical thing to do or not? So yeah, there is a meaning situation in life that the Bible doesn't have something to say about. If we read the Bible enough and study it enough, all the answers are there. I'm grateful for that. Thank you, Roger. Well, I'm very blessed. And of course, I'm both great. All this good that we have, it's a universe, isn't it? It's a very, it's a powerful universe that we have before us. But the Holy Spirit can bring to our minds True fellowship with one another too Thank you very much, Max Hey, don't we have a Did Beck check out today? Uh-huh Beck is there and Beck is ready to talk to us Beck, I'll call for 580, go ahead Well, he dabbled with you, Roger, when you first came on So I know he was there You may be taking care of Sandy, I don't know Or cooking up something My back is through there. Come on the radio. So, Roger, I guess we'll have to catch up with the back tomorrow. In any event, Roger, good talking to you. 7-3 to you, and we'll see you tomorrow morning, God willing. WB-7, you may exit the standing by. Thank you for that, Kevin. A larger, really, Kevin's comment. He says that you and Dewey are both in his prayers. And he really appreciates you and your contribution to the net. He said that verse 16 of our scripture reading today really impacted him. And, um... He just talked about the importance of truth, and how we need to stick with that, and no matter what the opposition is. So that's a relay from Kevin KB7. Roger, WB7B0. Go ahead, Roger. Oh, yes, thank you, thank you for this wonderful press release. I'm going to go back to the fair, but I'm sorry to let it make you panic. Thank you so much. I do pass out in my life. Every now and then I leave, and I always leave behind. But, well, let's talk about the spiritual issues. All right. the issues of prayer. I have a statement of prayer that I have upstairs in my bedroom that came to me recently about what prayer is. And it's just that I am secure with you, at least outside the time. And if you would tell me, it's quite an amazing place. description of what the spiritual warfare is of prayer. And maybe I'll break it down in a minute.
