### Bible Study Summary: 2 Corinthians 9:1-15

#### Overview and Context

The Bible study focused on 2 Corinthians 9:1-15, a passage that addresses the topic of giving to ministries and needs outside the local church. This chapter is part of Paul's second letter to the Corinthians, where he discusses various aspects of Christian living, including the importance of generosity and giving. The passage emphasizes the spiritual discipline of giving and the blessings that come from it, both for the giver and the recipient.

#### Key Points and Themes

1. **Paul's Instructions on Financial Giving**: Paul provides guidance on how to give to those in need, emphasizing that giving should be done with a cheerful heart. This reflects the broader theme of generosity and the importance of supporting those who are less fortunate.

2. **God's Provision and Multiplication**: The passage highlights God's provision and the idea that when we give, God multiplies our seed. This is a powerful reminder that our acts of giving are not just for the recipient but also for our own spiritual growth and provision.

3. **Spiritual Discipline and Stewardship**: Giving is presented as a spiritual discipline and a form of stewardship. It is not merely a financial transaction but a way of showing our faith and commitment to God's work.

4. **Reasonable Service to God**: The passage suggests that giving is a reasonable service to God. This implies that giving is not just a moral obligation but a joyful act that honors God.

5. **Personal Responsibility**: Each person is encouraged to give as they purpose in their heart. This underscores the importance of personal responsibility in giving, emphasizing that it should come from a genuine desire to serve and not from a sense of obligation.

6. **Saving and Preparedness**: The discussion also touched on the importance of saving and preparing for hard times. This highlights the practical aspect of stewardship and the need to balance giving with financial prudence.

#### Discussion Questions and Themes

1. **Attitude of Giving**: How does the attitude of giving impact the act itself? What does it mean to give with a cheerful heart?
   - **Discussion**: The attitude with which we give can greatly affect the impact of our giving. A cheerful heart reflects a joyful spirit and a willingness to serve, which can inspire others to do the same.

2. **Spiritual Discipline**: In what ways can giving be seen as a spiritual discipline? How does it affect our relationship with God?
   - **Discussion**: Giving can be seen as a spiritual discipline because it requires us to trust in God's provision and to prioritize His work over our own desires. This practice can deepen our faith and our understanding of God's love and provision.

3. **Reasonable Service**: What does it mean to give as a reasonable service to God? How can this perspective change our approach to giving?
   - **Discussion**: Giving as a reasonable service to God means that we recognize our giving as a way to honor and serve Him. This perspective can shift our focus from giving as a duty to giving as a joyful act of worship and service.

4. **Personal Responsibility**: How can we determine our level of giving? What does it mean to give as we purpose in our heart?
   - **Discussion**: Determining our level of giving should come from a place of personal responsibility and purpose. It is not about meeting a set standard but about giving in a way that reflects our heart and our commitment to God's work.

5. **Saving and Preparedness**: How can we balance giving with saving and preparing for hard times? What does this balance look like in practice?
   - **Discussion**: Balancing giving with saving and preparedness involves understanding the importance of financial stewardship. It means giving generously while also being prudent in our financial planning to ensure we can meet our own needs and those of others in the future.

#### Conclusion

The study of 2 Corinthians 9:1-15 provides a rich framework for understanding the importance of giving as a spiritual discipline and a form of stewardship. It encourages us to give with a cheerful heart, recognizing that our acts of giving are not just for others but also for our own spiritual growth and God's provision. As we reflect on these themes, we are invited to consider how we can incorporate these principles into our daily lives, balancing generosity with financial prudence and recognizing the joy and blessings that come from giving.

Okay, any other check-ins or prayer requests, come now. Alright, we are going to get started with our Bible study today. I'm just looking one last time at my SDR to see if I'm missing anyone. For right now, I don't see anyone that I'm missing, but I will check again in a little bit. Alright, this is WB7MAX, Net Control for the West Coast Bible Study. We are in 2 Corinthians chapter 9. This is a section that's dealing with giving. And it has to do with giving to ministries and needs outside of the local church in foreign lands or in areas outside our geographical area. So here we have people in what is modern-day Greece. The churches up in North, like Philippi and Thessalonica, the church down South, Corinth, and Paul is giving them instructions about principles for financial giving to saints that live elsewhere when they are in financial need. And so there was saints in Jerusalem. that were poor because of a drought and because of persecution, and the saints in Greece were gathering together money to send over to what is modern-day Israel, to the city of Jerusalem, to relieve those saints. So anyway, we've looked at chapter 8, and now we are moving on to chapter 9, where Paul continues to talk about the same subject matter. So we're going to be reading together 2 Corinthians chapter 9, And I think I'll go ahead and read that because the band is so poor today. And we'll open in prayer before we do that. And so, Beck, Alpha Alpha 5 Yankee, could you please open in prayer for us today? Sure. Let us all bow our heads. Good morning, Father God in Heaven. Thank you so much for giving us another day that we can all be here and rest in the peacefulness of the joy of the words that we read and share in your scripture. Please be with us and guide us. and give us the message that we need to share with one another. This we pray in Jesus' holy name. Amen. Thank you for that, Beck. Real good. Appreciate that a lot. The net would like to acknowledge Gene K7GWR. Gene, see you there in the Utah SDR. Thank you for being here with us today. That's Gene. Paul says, for as touching the ministering unto the saints, it is superfluous for me to write unto you. For I know the forwardness of your mind, for which I boast of you to them of Macedonia that Achaia was ready a year ago. and your zeal has provoked very many. Yet have I sent the brethren, lest our boasting of you should be in vain, in this behalf, that, as I said, you may be ready. Lest, happily, if they of Macedonia come with me and find you unprepared, We, that we say not ye, should be ashamed in this same confident boasting. Therefore I thought it necessary to exhort the brethren that they would go before unto you and make up beforehand your bounty, whereof you had noticed before that the same might be ready as a matter of bounty, and not as of covetousness. What is this I say? He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly, and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man, according as he purposes in his heart, shall let him give, not grudgingly or of necessity, for God loveth a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you. that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work. As it is written, he hath dispersed abroad, he is given to the poor, his righteousness remaineth forever. Now he that ministereth seed to the sower, both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seeds sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness, being enriched in everything to all bountifulness, which causeth through the thanksgiving of God. For the administration of this service not only supplies the want of the saints, but is abundant also by many thanksgivings unto God. Whilst by the experiment of this ministration they glorify God, for your professed subjection unto the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal distribution unto them and unto all men, and by their prayer for you, which long after you, for the exceeding grace of God in you, thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift. All right, any comments on this section, please come down with your call sign. All right, well, let me just start out with the last verse. All right. 2 Corinthians 9, verse 15, Thanks be unto God for His unspeakable gift. And of course, it's talking here about the Lord Jesus Christ. And a gift so wonderful, there are not words to describe it. And so there's some things that you just stand in awe of. There's some things you stand... dumbfounded at, there's some things you stand speechless before, because they're so overwhelmingly magnificent that words fail you to ever begin to be able to describe them. They can only be experienced. And that's what Paul is saying here in verse 15, is that this gift of the Lord Jesus Christ is beyond suitable words to ever be able to describe. And while we have some words to describe it, it's so much greater than those words that we feel wholly inadequate using those words to be able to try to express the measure and the degree of the blessedness of the gift of Jesus Christ to us. And if God has given to that degree and to that level and to that greatness then this provides a model for us in our giving to Him and to His people. For He says, inasmuch as you've done it to the least of these, my brethren, you've done it to me. And so we give to our poor Christian brethren. What Jesus is saying is that's the same as giving to me. So if you love Jesus and you want to give to Jesus, give to his brethren and he'll take it as a gift directly to him. All right, other comments on this section? Please come down with your call, sir. Call. KK7PDI? David, KK7PDI, please go ahead. Yeah, thanks, Max. I like the way that you brought that verse 15 in because of the indescribable gift, the gift of Jesus Christ that was given in our place. Excuse me. And I appreciate that because it sets the standard looking at everything, therefore, that was said previous to this. But what always comes to mind is verse 7, because I've heard this used so many times again. And you see, it's a problem in the world, because when you speak to people that are on church, have never been saved, one of the biggest problems they have is giving. All the church cares about, they say, is my money. That's all they want. that's because they don't understand the word of God. But verse 7 again, so let each one give as he purposes in his heart. And I like that, not grudgingly or of necessity, for God loves a cheerful gift. Because we understand he gave it all that we might live. He gave everything, and so everything that you have, is because of Him. And so when you give, don't be grudgingly about it. He provided you your daily bread. He provided you the clothes on your back. He provided you a home or whatever you have. It's because of His love for us. Kilo Kilo 7, Papagalpia, India. Back to you, Max. Yeah, well said, David. And it's not just about the amount of our gift. It's about the attitude with which that gift is given. And as you said, what do we have that we have not received? And if we have received it, because it's a privilege to be able to give. And it's a privilege and an honor to be able to serve God in that fashion. And so giving is actually a spiritual gift. It's actually a ministry that God calls us to and a stewardship that we have a responsibility with reference to. So if we're going to serve God, let's serve him with happiness. And that especially comes in the area of giving. So thank you for that. All right, I've got a comment here from Daryl WB7AOT. He says, Hi, Max. The reading this morning implies that the Christians in the early churches had jobs and were earning wages or else had businesses. That would have been the way the churches and offerings were financed. And that's exactly right. It was expected of the Christians that they would not only earn their own money, Darrell, but that they would then, out of their earnings, only provide for themselves but for others. For example, it says in 1 Thessalonians chapter 5, if a man doesn't work, he shouldn't eat. And so Paul had no time and no place for grifters and freeloaders. He expected everyone to work. Elsewhere he says that, you know, work with quietness and eat your own bread. Elsewhere he said, "Let him that stole steal no more, but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing that is good, that he may have to give to him that is in any need." So over and over again, Darrell, the Scriptures say a man needs to work, he needs to provide for his own, and then he needs to take what he has in excess of meeting the immediate needs of himself and his family, and utilize that in the service of the Kingdom of God. So, appreciate that comment, Darrell, spot on. All right, I got another comment here from Brian KJ7 PWM. In verse 10, it says, And he that supplies seed to the sower and bread for food shall supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the fruits of your righteousness. And then here's Brian's comment. God has all the seed. God will distribute it accordingly. See the parable of the talents. Brian, good comment. That's Brian, K7CIP. And basically what he's saying here is that in verse 10, God is the one who ministers seed to the sower. And so if we have any seed, he's given it to us. and our responsibility is to distribute it. He talked about the parable of the talents. And, oh, this is PWM. Ha! I need to look at my stupid phone. I knew it was Brian. Brian, this is Brian KJ7 PWM, not Brian KJ7 ZIP. I think that's the second time I've done that to you, Brian. You're going to have to mail me a letter bomb or something. In any event, yeah, Brian, KJ7PWM. He says, or the third time you've done it to me. Well, I get my Brians confused, you know. That's what you've got to put up with when you're hanging around with WB7MAX, a confused old man. All right. Okay, so. Yeah, God has seed, and he will distribute it accordingly. Parable of the talents, right? God gave one talent to one person and five to another and ten to another, and each one needed to be a steward of what God had given to them. All right, I will shut up before I dig myself into any deeper of a hole here. Brian, KJ7, PWM, thank you for that comment. All right, any other comments, please come now. AK6, OK. Alright, I got Jeff. AK6, OK. Go ahead there, Jeff. Well, as we all know, Malachi 310, bring all of the ties into the storehouse so there will be enough food for my temple. If you do, says the Lord of Heaven's armies, I will open up the windows of Heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won't have enough room. to take it in, put me to the test. You know what? We've experienced this in my family. Absolutely, we have tried to outgive God, and we have failed miserably, Max. Yeah, Jeff, what a great passage, Malachi 3.10, and that goes right along with with 2 Corinthians 9.10. He that ministers seed to the sower, both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness. So there's a double blessing there. There's a material blessing, multiply your seed sown, and then there's a spiritual blessing, increase the fruits of your righteousness. So the point that Malachi is exhorting us to and that Paul is exhorting us here to as well, and that is you can't out-give God. You know, God will be no man's debtor. And when we give to God, not only will he make it up, he'll multiply it on top of that. And so, Jeff, you know, I know that your life in ministry has been a real testimony to that. I think all of us who have been faithful in giving have experienced that. And, you know, I had somebody say to me one time, well, I can't afford to give. And my response was, you can't afford not to give. Because God will bless the 90% and make it stretch further than the 100% would if you tithe. Okay, one more thing. Go ahead, Jeff. Yeah, you know, I heard a pastor one time that really stuck with me when he said, you know, I'll tell you what, and he was speaking to me. He said, Jeff, what would happen if God provided for you just like you provided for him? Where would we be then? He can certainly drop your income based on what you give him. Yeah, that's an interesting challenge. And so, yeah, we need to reciprocate. And God tells us, you know, what he wants there. You know, the tithe is a biblical principle of giving 10%, and then, you know, we can give above and beyond that. I knew a guy who was single. He had no family. And he had a very high-paying job. He gave 90% of his income. I think R.G. Letourneau did the same thing. He wrote a book called The Mover of Men and Mountains. He was the first inventor of the bulldozer and heavy equipment. And so, you know, depending upon how much you're making, I mean, if you're making a million dollars a year, right, you can live on $100,000 a year and give 90% and still do just fine. So I'm not telling anybody how much they should give. Tithing is certainly a biblical principle. It's one that we've followed all of our lives and really seen God bless that. But at the same time, you know, I think each person needs to ask themselves, what does God want me to do in my situation with the resources He's given to me, and then just go from there. So anyway, Jeff, thank you for that. How well would God do based on your giving? I think that's a principle we can think about and incorporate into our thought process in making an evaluation there. Okay. Brian, thank you for this. Brian gave me some cover here. This is Brian, KJ7PWM. He said, in kindergarten, there were four Brians in my class. I am used to it. All right, Brian. Well, you're not going to escape in your old age, especially when you hang around with me. All right, I love my Brians. I only got two of them, but I'll keep them straight from here on out. Hopefully, God willing. All right, other comments, please come now. Steve, W6YSI, go ahead. I appreciate your comments, Max, and anybody else in that verse 7, because I've heard people, whenever we've gotten into discussions with them about why are you not giving, and they've come up with the answer, well, I can't do it carefully, so therefore I don't give. W6YSI. Yeah, that's just a lot of cop-out. Okay, that's just saying, I have a bad attitude, I'm justifying my bad attitude, and I intend to keep my bad attitude. And really what that is, that's a cloak of covetousness. Okay, and so Paul talks about that here in verse 5. In verse 5 he says, Therefore I thought it necessary to exhort the brethren that they would go before unto you and make up beforehand your bounty, whereof you had noticed before, that the same might be ready as a matter of bounty and not as of covetousness. And the idea there is that, you know, if you're giving and bitter about it, then you have a real problem. God wasn't bitter about giving you His Son. And certainly we should not ever be bitter about giving to God, but grateful that we can reciprocate, because, you know, reciprocation is a principle that's very powerful in the Bible. We see that in Romans chapter 12 and verse 1. I beseech you, therefore, in light of the mercies of God that have been shown to you in salvation, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable servant. It's a reasonable thing to give back to the God who gave to us, Paul says there in Romans 12. And so we not only give ourselves, but our resources as well. And really, they're not even ours. Our body's been bought with a price, all our possessions have been given to us as a stewardship. So the whole idea that we own stuff is ridiculous. We don't own anything. You don't even own your own life. It was given to you by God. You don't own your own soul. It was purchased by Christ. And you sure don't own your possessions. They were all given to you as a stewardship. So pray tell, what do you own? You don't own anything. And so the only question is, is how does the one who gave all this stuff to me, he gave me my life, he gave me my soul, he gave me my possessions, how does he want me to manage them? And, you know, when you let go of thinking you own anything, then you just become a manager. Right. and then you become someone who can joyfully do what the true owner tells you to do with your body, with your soul, and with your possessions. So, Steve, thank you for bringing that out, and that's an attitude that certainly needs to be rebuked in anybody who would ever express such a thing. I hardly think someone would be saved if they could say such a thing. All right, other comments. Please come now. 5 Yankee. 5 Yankee, go ahead. Yeah, one of the reasons I go by Beck is because everybody seems to be named Mike. One of the problems I had with giving is I want to give non-grudgingly and with an open heart and happily. But when at church, Sandy and I purchased microphones for the girls. And because we spent $400 or $500 on mics and stands and everything, we didn't give anything that week to the church. And basically, the preacher... made it perfectly clear that when you do something like that, you still need to give what's required to the church. And then whatever's left over from the church, you know, spend that on something else if you want. My problem with that is that makes me feel like it's a necessity. And if I'm going to give cheerfully, then I think that I should be allowed to give the money where I find it necessary to help the church. Alpha Alpha Phi Yankee. Yeah, Beck, you know, we can give money in the offering plate. We can give items and a gift in kind. I mean, what's the difference between you putting... $400 into microphones and stands, and you putting $400 into the church and them going with that money and buying microphones and stands. You know, unless, you know, they, you know, the pastor's not getting his rent paid that month, and they don't need microphones and stands, they need money for the rent so he can live for, you know, another month. So, yeah, Beck, I really sympathize with your position. I think that if we're going to give to the Lord's work, if we're going to give to our church, the question is, how is that money going to be spent? I think the elders in the church can best decide how the money given to the church should be spent. I've seen people donate very expensive items to the church, you know, pianos costing tens of thousands of dollars. And yet, you know, the church needs a siding, you know, or whatever, or needs a new roof. And so to preempt the priorities of the elders by giving items that are different than what they perceive to be the most important need, I can see where that would be a problem, but to say that you need to give on top of the items you've given, there's some principles there, Beck, and I certainly understand when I give gifts in kind, that's in addition to the financial giving because I know that nobody can pay that month's heat bills with a microphone and a music stand. And if there isn't money for that, then I can see why a statement like that would be made. But assuming there's sufficient funds to meet the basic needs of the church and the pastor, then giving items like that is entirely appropriate. So back to you there, Beck. Hi, Roger. I understand what you're saying. I still feel that where I want to spend my money on the church is my business. And I want to be a cheerful giver. And these five ladies sharing one microphone to me, which is ridiculous. And only the read the... praise team person was a person with his own microphone and that was it. And as far as me giving to the church to help support the pastor, how did that pastor make it before I came along? Roger? Yeah, I copy that. Well, I certainly sympathize with your perspective there, Beck, and understand the frustration that you were feeling. Anyway, thanks for expressing that. I think it brings out an interesting discussion and some good principles. All right, any other comments anybody wants to make on this passage, please come down. PDI. Okay, I heard a call sign. Go ahead. PDI. PDI, go ahead. Yeah, thank you, Max. When I look at our faith, our faith is a spiritual discipline that we must act on. And how do we build our faith? How do we build our, you know, relationships in Christ? It's through reading of his word, and we draw on that, and we build ourselves up that way through him. And so it's a spiritual discipline that takes place. Giving is no different. It's a spiritual discipline. And you give back as you purpose in your heart, and it should not be grudgingly. It should be a willful gift, understanding the great price that was paid and given to you. And, you know, when we have people that come to worship and have never visited in the congregation where I attend, when the giving is done, they It's made very clear that you're our honored guest. We do not solicit your funds. You're not a member here. It's the members that are responsible to give for the church there. And so we give as we purpose in our hearts and we give back. But I don't require it of any visitor. You're present. You just be there if you need enough. Now, should you later become a member, then you're obligated. But at the same time, that's something that each of us will give an account to God, and that be of judgment, how we gave back with what He's blessed us with. And that's something that is personal between you and God, and you will give an account for it, and I will give an account for it. 10-10-7, Papa Del Valle, back to you, Max. Yeah, David, really well said. And I agree, the members are the ones who are the responsible to support the church. The way we handled that is, in my 34 years of pastoral ministry, we never took up an offering warrant. We never passed the plate, ever. And the reason for that is, I didn't want to be sticking a plate in someone's face who wasn't ready to give, who wasn't prepared to give, maybe who wasn't even a Christian. So we just had an offering box in the back with a slot in the top. You guys are honored guests, and we don't expect you to give. We're here to serve you, not take from you. But the message needs to be that the church is not all about money. Churches require money to operate, for sure, but that's not what we lead with. We lead with the gospel. We lead with service and sacrifice. We lead with love and grace. And then if somebody wants to reciprocate that out of their own desire, well, fine. Here's the avenue to do it. And I can tell you, we never lacked for what we needed when we used that offering box in the back, because all the members knew it was there. And if visitors were curious, that was pointed out to them, but only when they initiated the conversation. All right, good comment there. And you're right, we're going to all give account for what we have given or not given to the Lord based upon what our circumstance and situation is. All right, I got another text message here. I got a couple of them. Keith, WB7RKR, good morning. We got you checked in. Appreciate you being there. And here's what Keith says. He says, "If we store money in food for giving, where is the storing food for seven years come into the personal need?" Okay, good question there, Keith. And what he's referring to here is Joseph in Egypt. Now, you remember how Joseph bought a fifth of the grain? in the years of plenty, stored it up, and then of course in the years of famine, they had to give. And you know, elsewhere in the Bible it says there's treasure and oil to be desired in the dwelling of the wise, but the foolish man spins it up. And so the Bible lays upon us a responsibility not to live just hand to mouth, okay? To have some reserve against hard times, so that we have the ability to take care of ourselves and even give to others who haven't prepared for those hard times. And that's what Joseph was doing. So the point is here is that it's perfectly fine to have a savings account, to be a prepper, if you will. It says, go to the anthill slugger, consider her ways and be wise. So having no guide or overseer, prepares her food in the summer so that she can eat throughout the winter. And so over and over again, the Bible encourages saving, preparing, having things in reserve so that we can sail through the hard times without being destitute or destroyed. So Keith, WB7RKR, great comment. All right, I've got another comment here from Dave, KE7WKI. Dave says, I don't tithe, but a pastor of a small church of about 25... 30 miles away and don't get a salary. You don't have to mention my name. I'm sorry. I should have read this before I spoke. But, yeah, you know, there's other ways to give. And, you know, when we're not receiving income, we're not expected to tithe, bottom line. And so if there is no income, then there is no grounds for giving. So thank you for that. I apologize for not reading that before I read it out on the net. Okay, other comments, please come now. KM5F, we had a double there. Go ahead, Will. Thank you. Thank you. AM5S, go ahead. Yeah, I know. Sounds like he drifted off frequency. Yeah, you were talking about Joseph. Well, he gave not just money, but he gave food for his family because they didn't have any. So we probably should be given, you know, of our resources that have been mentioned several times, which includes food or other things, clothing, things to plow the ground, etc. came by them. Yeah, that's exactly right. And along Beck's line, when the church needs a new lawnmower, you just go buy a lawnmower and give it to them. And so there's lots of different ways to give. We can give our time, we can give our resources, we can give our ministry, we can give our money, we can give our prayers. There's lots of ways to give. The focus of our section here today is financial giving. But just because we're focusing on financial giving doesn't mean there aren't other ways to give. All right, there was another station that had a comment. Other station, come now. That was 5 Yankee. Okay, 5 Yankee, go ahead, back, go ahead. Okay, I'll make it quick because we have the military net coming up. The thing about giving, I kind of have a stigma about it. And the reason why is my parents were giving envelopes, and those envelopes had numbers on them. And those numbers were related to the person in our family that was giving. And they would track how much money you gave. And at the end of the year, they would come by and check your taxes to make sure that you gave your 10%. And if you didn't give the 10%, they'd let you know how much more money you owed the church. I think that's why I have a stigma about giving. We'll copy that back. That is completely evil, and it's completely unchristian, it's completely ungodly for a church to ever do that. And it seems like to me you've got pastors there who are greedy, of filthy lucre, and aren't even qualified to be in the ministry. So, Beck, what happened to you was wrong, and it was evil, and I understand why that would be difficult. All right. Beck is right. We have the Vintage Military Radio coming up at 6:50, which is about nine minutes from now. Al, KJ7 to Q8, you go ahead and close the prayer for us right now, please. Thank you, Pastor Mack.
