### Bible Study Summary: 1 Corinthians 14:1-26

#### Morning Reflections and Personal Insights

The study began with a reflection on the challenges of waking up in the morning, with a comparison to Will, who consistently wakes up at 4:30 AM. This discussion highlighted the diversity of sleep schedules among individuals, emphasizing that each person has a unique rhythm and that understanding and respecting these differences is vital for personal well-being and community harmony. The morning routine serves as a metaphor for how we approach our spiritual lives, with some finding early morning devotionals more conducive to spiritual growth than others.

#### Radio Check-ins and Prayer Requests

The study session was facilitated by WB7MAX, with various members checking in, including Keith K7NEB, Jim N7DKE, Jerry AE70R, and Will (Kittalake 5 Foxtrot). Jim shared his background from Sandpoint, Idaho, while Jerry mentioned the need for prayers for Brian KJ7PWM's father who was undergoing surgery. Will requested prayers for missionaries Jeremy and April Langley in South Africa. These check-ins and prayer requests set a tone of community and mutual support, reflecting the importance of prayer in the lives of believers.

#### Bible Study Focus: 1 Corinthians 14:1-26

Steve W6YSI read from 1 Corinthians 14:1-26, focusing on the regulation of spiritual gifts within the assembly. The passage emphasizes that spiritual gifts are given for service and edification, not for personal glory. The gifts must be used in an orderly fashion to ensure that they contribute to the edification of the church. The discussion centered on how these gifts function as signs to both believers and non-believers, reinforcing the idea that the church should operate as a cohesive team working towards a common goal of edification.

#### Discussion Points and Themes

- **David KK7TDI** highlighted that spiritual gifts serve as signs to both believers and non-believers, emphasizing their role in witnessing and evangelism.
- **Steve W6YSI** emphasized the church as a team, working together for edification, underscoring the importance of unity and cooperation.
- **Jeff AK6OK** expressed concerns about the misuse of spiritual gifts, specifically speaking in tongues without interpretation, which can lead to confusion and division.
- **George K2KJX** clarified the role of prophets and the importance of the Bible as the ultimate source of truth, ensuring that prophetic messages align with scriptural teachings.
- **Mark KJ7PVT** provided context for 1 Corinthians, noting its relevance in addressing issues of division and disorder within the early church, which remains applicable today.
- **Brian KJ7PWM** raised questions about the use of prophecy in the past and present, encouraging a thoughtful and discerning approach to prophetic messages.

#### Prayer Requests and Community Support

The study concluded with a series of prayer requests, including Kevin KJ7 and his church welcoming a new pastor, Glenn KJ7 for healing after eye surgery, Brian KJ7PWM's father for a successful surgery, April Langley and Jeremy for safety as missionaries, and Tyler for overcoming drug addiction. The group also prayed for unsaved individuals and communities to hear and believe the gospel, for marriages to be loving and respectful, and for chapels and Bible distribution efforts in 86. Pastors were prayed for wisdom and spiritual protection, and the Christ ministry through the fellowship of Christian lawyers was also mentioned. Scott M7NPA requested prayers for unsaved individuals in the community.

#### Closing Remarks and Encouragement

David KK7PDI thanked WB7MAX for navigating the discussion, and Carol KK7TPO and Dave KE7WKI were acknowledged for listening. The group discussed the importance of patience and trusting in God's timing, especially in light of the challenges facing healthcare and the plans for Bible printing and chapels in Navy ships. The closing remarks emphasized the importance of perseverance and trust in God's plan, even in the face of uncertainty.

Are there any relays? I haven't heard from Mark, KJ7PVT, any relays? Okay, not hearing any relays. Okay, I am going to go ahead and get started with the West Coast Bible study. And Steve, W6YSI, I'm going to ask you to read today when the time comes. We are going to have a fairly long section here, Steve. 1 Corinthians 14, 1 through 26, that's 1 through 26. and I'll explain in a moment the reason why that reading is so long. But, Steve, are you going to be able to read for us? Amen. Okay, Steve. All right, so we got you at the gate there. All right, this is WB7MAX, Net Control for the West Coast Bible Study. We are in the section of 1 Corinthians that's dealing with the exercise of spiritual gifts. And in chapter 12, Paul dealt with the distribution of spiritual gifts in the assembly. And he said that the Spirit sovereignly decides who gets the gift and what that gift is. No one has all the gifts, but everyone has at least one. And so we are interdependent on each other. We are unified with each other as a single body of Christ, with each person bringing to the table that which God equips them. to be able to serve others. So spiritual gifts are a God-given ability for service, and so they are given to us by God to enable us to serve others in the assembly. Then in chapter 13, he dealt with the limitations of spiritual gifts, and he showed us that spiritual gifts were limited in their value and also in their duration. They're less valuable than love and less important than love, and they will eventually cease to function, but love will function forever. we saw the limitations of spiritual gifts. So having seen the distribution of spiritual gifts in chapter 12 and the limitations of spiritual gifts in chapter 13, now in chapter 14 Paul deals with the regulation of spiritual gifts in the assembly. And there's two issues that he deals with. First of all, he makes it clear that spiritual gifts must be used in an edifying manner. And that's the section we're going to be looking at today. and that is all things are to be done to edifying. So however you use your spiritual gift is not for you. It's for others and the building up of others. So the principle of thinking of others and being selfless and ministering to others is the principle theme there in these first 26 verses. And then, secondly, he deals with spiritual gifts being used in an orderly fashion. So we have the principle of edification in 1 to 26 verses, And then we have the principle of order in verses 27 to the end of the chapter. So this would be dysregulation of spiritual gifts that was going on in the assembly. People were being selfish, and people were being chaotic in the way in which they exercised spiritual gifts. And he says, no, no, no, no. Stop being selfish. Think of others. Exercise your gifts in a way that blesses them. And then don't be chaotic. Do everything decently and in order. So that's what's going on here. You can't have everybody doing their own thing in their own way for their own advantage in the assembly. and you can't have people doing things in a disorderly and dysregulated fashion. So that's our passage that we're going to be looking at. Before we read that passage, we want to open our time together in prayer. And so, Jim, in 7BKE, if you could open a prayer for us, I'd appreciate that. Go ahead. Hi, thank you very much. In 7BKE, we'll say the prayer this morning. Look to the Lord, fellas. Let him know that you're willing to talk with him. Don't ever hesitate. Be able to speak with him any time you need him. He's there for you at all times. So look for us at Stay Father Watch over each one of us, whatever we do. This is Valentine's Day. I remembered I was engaged to my wife. It must be 80 years ago. So have a real nice day. Protect us each day, Lord. Guide us, whatever we need to say, as we go out and visit with others. Protect and keep. And I heard there was people who have a needing prayer for cancer. Protection in Africa. Father, that's the same that you need to protect your loved ones as we ask for protection. Make sure they're safe this day. Guide us, Father, and get us through the day. We give you the praise and be with all our loved ones. Amen. Amen, Jim. Thank you so much for that prayer. Yep, the throne of grace is always available, and praise the Lord for that. All right, we have a long section here. It's a single-thought unit, actually, where Paul addresses matters in various ways. He establishes principles. He illustrates principles. He applies principles. And of course that principle is summarized in verse 12 there, where he says, "...seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church." And I want you to notice all the times the word edify and edification is used as Steve reads here. All right, Steve, W6YSI, read for us 1 Corinthians 14, 1-26. All right. Okay, I'll be reading from the New American Standard, Chapter 14, 1 through 26. "Pursue love, yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, especially as you may prophesy. For one who speaks in a tongue and does not speak, then does," let me try that again, In a tongue does not speak to men, but to God. For no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries. But one who prophesies speaks to men for ratification and exhortation and consolation. One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself. and one who prophesies edifies the church. Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy. And greater is one who prophesies than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interpret, so that the church may receive edifying. But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what shall I profit you, unless I speak to you either by way of revelation, or of knowledge, or of prophecy, or of teaching. Yet even lifeless things, either flute or harp, in producing a sound, if they do not produce a distinction in the tone, how will it be known what is played on the flute or on the harp? For if the bugle produces an indistinct sound, who will prepare himself for battle? So also you, unless you utter by the tongue speech that is clear, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be speaking into the air. There are perhaps a great many kinds of languages in the world, and no kind is without meaning. If then I do not know the meaning of the language, I shall be the one who speaks a barbarian. The one who speaks will be a barbarian to me. So also you, since you are zealous of spiritual gifts, speak to abound for the edification of the church. Therefore let one who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret. For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. What is the outcome then? I shall pray with the spirit and I shall pray with the sound, with the mind also. I shall sing with the spirit and I shall sing with the mind also. Otherwise, if you bless in the spirit only, how will the one who fills the place of the ungifted say the Amen that you're giving thanks since he doesn't know what you are saying? For you are giving thanks well enough, but the other man is not edified. I thank God to speak in tongues more than you will. However, in the Church I desire to speak five words with my mind, that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words. the tongue. Brethren, do not be children in your thinking, that an evil be bathed, and in your thinking be mature. For the law it is written, By men of strange tongues and by the lips of strangers, never and even so they will not listen to me, says the Lord. So then, tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe, but to unbelievers. The prophecy is for a sign, not to unbelievers, but to those who believe. If therefore the whole church should assemble together and all speak in tongues, can ungifted men or unbelievers enter? Will he not say that you are mad? But if all prophesy, but if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an ungifted man enters, he is convicted by all. He is called to account by all. The secrets of his heart are disclosed until he will fall on his face and worship God, declaring that God is certainly among you. What is the outcome then, brethren? Can you assemble? Each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a time, has an interpretation. Have all things. Be done for edification. I'll stop there at 27. W6 Wi-Fi. Yeah, Steve, great reading. Thank you for that. Much appreciated. WB7MAX here, net control for the West Coast Bible study. All right, this is quite an extended section that we read. My goal here is not to so much plunge into the details, although I'm happy to do that if anyone wants to, but look at the big picture of this passage. All right, any comments on this passage, please come down to your call line. TDI. David, KK7TDI, please go ahead. Yeah, thank you, Max. I think the picture here, based on what was just read, is very clear. Paul had to address the spiritual gifts within the church that were there. And context again is king. And you have to remember the fact that the church was still in its infancy. And the church needed to grow and have the knowledge. And these tongues were necessary. But the key point that is brought out here is that the spiritual gifts were a sign. not just to non-believers, but to the believers themselves, as prophecy was to the believers, but the tongues and stuff were a sign. And they were to point, obviously, when you go down the road and you see a sign, it tells you whether to turn right or left, or at three miles you turn this way or you turn that way. Well, these signs were all to point to Jesus. And it was to show that he was the Christ, the Son of the living God. That he was God with us, God incarnate. And these signs proved that. And they were for a purpose. And so it's important to see those things. again because the church was in its infancy, but you see again also in the scriptures and Acts and elsewhere that the laying on of the hands of the apostles were able to do these signs to others that they could not pass them on to anyone else. It was the apostles who laid on the hands. And then secondly, when you look at that, John is the last apostle that we understood that died on the island of Patmos in probably 68 AD. And because when he wrote Revelation, we see that judgment in Revelation coming in AD 70. So when the apostles reached out, so did the science. We don't see sacrifices anymore. We don't see any of that anymore. So it was all for a purpose, to point to Jesus. And the Church in its infancy needed the signs to prove all of these things. We have everything. Paul says, "You can understand my mysteries," that was given to him. So we understand it through the reading of the Gospel. QQ7, Papa Delta India, back to you, Max. Thank you, David, for those observations. Really appreciate that. All right, so the gifts are to exalt Jesus, and the gifts are to edify the saints. The gifts, many of them were for authentication, so that people knew who the true spokesmen for God were. So gifts had a number of purposes, and it's important that they be used according to those purposes and understood in light of those purposes. Gifts are out there all by themselves. they have a relationship to the larger theological context, the larger historical context, and to the declared purpose for which they were given. So I think those are really important points that you make there, David. Appreciate that. All right. Any other comments, please come down. Go ahead. Yeah, I think the picture that I get from this is Paul, he's a coach. And we've got this church here. It's the body of Christ. It's his. And we're all team members here on this team. And we've all got a responsibility. We've all got a duty. We've all got gifts. And the bottom line is we have to work as a team. And I think verse 26 is a very important one, and maybe for me it sums it all up. It says, Let all things be done for unification, building up of the body of Christ. And to me that's the most important thing there is for the church to be about, is the building up of the believers in the body of Christ, so that the work of God, the glory of God, the growth of the church is done in such a way that God will be pleased with us and the people will grow and be strong in their walk. Be a six-mile-tide. Yeah, Steve, that is a great illustration. You know, you think of football players on a football team, and I think, as I recall, not expert on this, but there's 11 players on the team. And those 11 players each have their own gifts. Some of them can throw the ball really well. Some can catch really well. Some can block. Some are excellent runners. And the team has to work together for the common goal. of getting that ball across the line. And in the same way, the church is like a team, and this one has this gift and the other one has that gift. And as you well said, Paul's the coach, and he's saying, hey, look, this is how you use the resources and the abilities and the skills that you have for the purpose of building up the church. And while he focuses in here on two gifts in particular, the gift of prophecy and the gift of tongues, these principles can broaden out to apply to the exercise of any gift. And the point is that all of them are to be used for the same goal. And that goal, as you well said, Steve, is edification. And you'll notice in chapter 14, in verse 3, It says, but he that prophesies speaketh unto men unto edification. Verse 4, he that speaketh in a tongue edifies himself. But he that prophesies edifies the church. Verse 5, which is you all spoke with tongues, but rather that you prophesied, for greater is he that prophesies than he that speaketh with tongues, that he may interpret that the church may receive edifying. And then notice verse 12. Even so, for as much as you are zealous of spiritual gifting, that you may excel to the edifying of the church. Verse 17. For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified. And then, of course, the verse that Steve quoted there. the very last one, verse 26, let all things be done to edification. So you see this word edify occurring over and over and over again. Those are the goalposts. That's the goalposts right there. And as you said, here's Paul coaching the team saying this is the goal we're headed towards. How should we exercise our spiritual gifts? to maximize the degree of building up in the faith, building up in Christlikeness of the assembly. And so it's all in this context of love. In the previous chapter, love is about how we deal with others. And then he says in chapter 14 and verse 1, follow after love. And then he applies the principle of love to the goal that we're trying to achieve with the exercise of our gift. Not self-glorification, not even self-edification, but really the edification and the upbuilding of other people. So this attitude of selflessness, this attitude of thinking of others, this attitude of showing love, in the way in which we exercise our gift in the assembly is the main theme and the big principle and the overarching idea that we need to take away from these first 26 verses. All right, other comments on this passage, please come down. AK6OK. Jeff, AK6OK, go ahead. Yeah, one observation here, which is really interesting. I've been in churches before, and it was very uncomfortable, where a bunch of people are speaking in tongues with no interpretation. And that seems, from what I've read, to not obviously be correct, backed up by what is being said here. And there are some churches I know that believe if you don't speak in tongues, you're not a Christian. What do you think about that, Max? Yeah. Yeah, those are great questions. Number one, the tongues that are spoken in churches today are not biblical tongues. Biblical tongues are known languages that are spoken somewhere on the face of the earth. The gift of tongues is the ability to speak a known language without having learned it. For example, I have never learned Japanese. If I had the gift of tongues, I would perhaps be able to speak Japanese to a Japanese person so that he could understand and hear the gospel. And so the gibberish that is spoken in our day and age is not tongues. So that's the reason why you've got people exercising this so-called gift in the fashion in which they do because it's not the biblical gift of tongues at all. Every time we see the word "tongues" used, it's either glossolalia or dialectos, both of which speak of known languages. So, ecstatic utterances, you know, are what pagan people do in their oracles that they engaged in with their worship of false gods in Greek culture. some of that was being brought over into the Corinthian church. We saw back in chapter 12 where people were saying, supposedly, with these ecstatic utterances, that Jesus is a curse. And Paul says no one speaking that Jesus is a curse is speaking by the Spirit of God. And then the disorderly thing, yeah, it's all about me and how I feel when I speak in tongues. And instead of basing their exercise of spiritual gifts on biblical exegesis, they say, I had an experience. And because I had this experience, therefore I have to bend the scriptures to justify, defend, and explain the experience that I had. We don't start with experience and go to the scriptures. We start with the scriptures and we interpret our experience in light of the scriptures. And so, you know, as I listened... and as linguists have researched tongue speaking throughout the world there's not enough phonetic variance there for any of that to be a language and so when people just speak in tongues without an interpreter that's clearly unbiblical and when they do it all at once it's just chaos and so what's being done in those situations Jeff is exactly contrary to what is being taught in this passage, both as to what tongues are and also as to how they are to be practiced. Back to you there, Jeff. Okay, sounds good. Yeah, I've run across this before. It was very, very strange. It was a very strange passage. to hear this, and I thought, man, I'm in the wrong place, I think. In the Haley's Bible Handbook, it says something very interesting in here. It says, The discussion of the role of women in the church verses 33-40, which we're not to yet, is a continuation of 11, 2-16. Paul here forbids what What seems to be, let me turn the page here, seems to allow in 11-5, there must have been some local circumstance unknown to us that gave point to these instructions, possibly some bold women unbecomingly putting themselves forward. I didn't quite understand that perspective of Mack. Yeah, that's correct. And we'll talk about that tomorrow, God willing, because that will be the second half of the chapter. You know, spiritual gifts are supposed to be done to edification, and then tomorrow spiritual gifts are to be conducted in an orderly fashion. And, you know, we'll see that order with reference to the prophets, with reference to the tongue speakers, and with reference to the women. The role of women is a hot-button topic, but Paul's quite clear about it in 1 Timothy 2 and also in 1 Corinthians 14. And we'll discuss that tomorrow. But yes, Jeff, I understand the uncomfortableness because it's not what they did in Bible times. You remember in Acts chapter 2 when they spoke in tongues, the people said, we all heard them in our own languages, and about 15 different languages were mentioned there, and they heard the wonderful works of God. So if I had the biblical gift of tongues, that would mean I would be able to speak in a language that was known by somebody somewhere in the world that I had not learned. But then they could hear the gospel. And so that's what the biblical gift of tongues is. All right. Great call, Sergio. Appreciate that. All right. Any other comments? Please come now. k2kjx uh okay we had a double there k2kjx i got you go ahead um i had as a young man on my late teens i had gone through a spiritual gift seminar and um uh i um not i'm not really comfortable with the whole um speaking in tongues thing but i would like to shift gears and talk about the prophet of the old testament and new testament And the prophets were confirmed by truth, and if it was not fulfilled, the repercussions were severe. And so I got out of it is that anybody that is a prophet must declare the truth and use the Bible as the source. and not their opinions, which I do see a lot of people on... listen to a lot of people on YouTube, and they make all kinds of crazy dates and things like that about what they believe the truth is. But I think our clarification is the Bible. that if they think they're a prophet, then they should be using the Bible to declare the truth. Over. Yeah, well said. And, you know, that's the reason why we talk about the salvation of revelatory gifts, George, is because the gift of prophecy is the ability to receive direct revelation from God. Well, if you're receiving direct revelation from God, it's going to be infallible, okay? And how many of these people claim to have a prophetic gift, and then what they prophesied doesn't come to pass? which demonstrates that they're false prophets. Once the Scriptures were completed, the need for the revelatory gifts ceased. And that's why, and of course the authenticating gifts as well. And that's why now, if we want to compare, if we want to determine whether what somebody says is true or not, we look at what does the Bible have to say? You know, it says, "...when Paul came and spoke, the brain searched the Scriptures to see whether these things were so." And that's what we do today, is we have a completed revelation. We don't need anything more than the Bible. And our job now is to expound what the Bible says. And if people are receiving new revelations from God, then those would be infallible, and they would need to be added to the Scriptures. So anyway... You're right, George. We don't need prophetic gifts. We don't need prophets. What we need is expositors of the prophecy that has been given, which is the Word of God. And so the scriptures are sufficient. They are complete. They are adequate to fully equip the man of God for every good work that he needs to do. as it says in 2 Timothy 3 and verse 17. All right, I think I heard Mark KJ7PBT in there. Good morning, Mark. I got you checked in. I'm sure you have a comment. Go ahead. Hey, good morning, Max. Thank you. I'm, of course, going to give a different opinion. And so we're going to start with context. I'm sorry, I'm hearing things. from my FDR. That's kind of confusing. But let me continue. Maybe I should will. Let me turn this down one second. You can continue. I'll come back. Okay, Mark. I will come back to you in a minute. Any other comments from anyone else, please come now. K87ZIP. K87ZIP, go ahead. Good morning, this is the last gentleman, I'll just give you the name and call sign back down I'm talking about the policy and all the stuff going on YouTube, the social media platforms and stuff like that The one thing I have noticed between the 2925 and those is that those all seem to be Proxies that are going to be tomorrow or next week. The time is very close by. Correct. A lot of the cross-playing that I can think of, that I've read in the old Has there been a change in how prophecy has been used or how it can be used, what's the cover that's right, or has there always been something that could be some kind of prophecy, have there always been something for tomorrow or for hundreds of years from now? Yeah, Brian, great question. The gift of prophecy involves two things. both of which are direct revelations from God. Number one, to get the prophecy involves foretelling the future. And that future may be, you know, next week, next month, next century, next millennium. So the time frame has always been very flexible. And you can see the prophets in the Old Testament prophesying of things that happen, you know, the next day. You see them prophesying of things that are going to happen for 2,000 years. But it's an accurate foretelling of the future. The second aspect of the gift of prophecy is the ability to just give a teaching that is new revelation from God. So, for example, the Spirit said that he would take the teachings, or Jesus said the Spirit would take his teachings from, and expand them through the prophets. So prophecy involves teaching, it involves foretelling the future, but what marks both of those is that they are new revelations from God to the prophet that has been given to the people. The gift of teaching is the exposition of the prophecy that's already been given. But prophecy itself is divine revelation. Does that make sense, Brian? Roger, Roger. Thank you, Max. Yeah, so the gift of prophecy in the Old Testament and the New Testament are the same gift. All right, let's get back to Mark, KG7PVT. Mark, go ahead. Thank you, Max. I want to address the idea of context. We don't have to... I've heard what context is from people, from men, and so we are always challenged to test the spirit and to see, is what I'm hearing in line with? scripture. So I did that and I thought, well, what is the context for the book of Corinthians? What is the context that Paul is talking about? And so I went to my concordance and I ended up finding what that is. and We passed right over it. It's in the very first chapter of 1 Corinthians. And Paul tells us exactly what the context is of this entire book. And he says as follows. It's in 1 Corinthians chapter 1. It is a number of sections here that he... that creates the context. The first one is, he is writing to the church of God, which is at Corinth, okay? We all agree on that. We're reading, and by the way, we are still reading the book of Corinthians, which we judge as the word of God. It comes from God, it comes from Paul. And so we can believe this, to the church of God, which is at Corinth, he was writing this to the church of God, which is at Corinth. And that the church is no longer there. Possibly, I'm not sure historically if it's still there, but I... This is who it was written to. Correct. And then it goes on to say, "Those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus are called to be saints." Well, wait a minute. I'm sanctified in Christ Jesus, and I'm called to be a saint, and so are you, Max, and so is everybody who is listening to my voice here, that we are... We have been sanctified with Christ. Now he's talking to us and with all who are in every place who call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours. So he's talking to everyone. Now the point that I want to make here is that. We could have many teachings about the Word of God, but we're supposed to line those up very, very much of what you're saying here. All of the aspects of the church that are supposed to be correct and that you and I say are correct. And I agree with some of these things that are said in chapter 14 because the church that I attend does that. we are very careful with all of this and we do follow the scripture that we are now reading and we are judging ourselves by these things as it all asks us to and I do know and I have been You know, I do know that there are churches that don't do that, and that's terrible to me as well. But that doesn't say that just because somebody does something wrong in one church, That should be the attitude against all others who don't do that. We do actually follow this very well. And everything is in order. So I'm not going to address all of the various points. And I hear what everyone is saying. But I would say also that as you say things, you are talking about many of them. of your Christian brothers and sisters here. And this is where we need to follow what we're talking about and better speak about each other as we learn. And don't generalize. You may have seen some errors, as I can point out, some errors as well. And I think what happens here is when we do that, all counsels are not to act that way, because that's not the way we are supposed to act as Christians. So I choose not to throw volleys at my Christian brothers. A, because I'm not supposed to, and B, we're supposed to act in love. But the crowning jewel of what I'm trying to say here is that I am reading this Bible, and currently I don't talk to it. I don't talk about these scriptures in past tense. because it is scripture and I don't treat the Bible that way when I read it. I read it to the best of my ability to try to understand it in the way that it is stated and how it is said. So that's it in a nutshell. KBWB, thank you. All right, Mark, well said and clearly said. Thank you. And I agree, just because one church twists the doctrine doesn't invalidate the doctrine. We can all point out examples of various teachings and practices that are perverted in some assemblies. That doesn't mean that there's a problem with the doctrine. That means there's a problem with that particular assembly and the way they twist either the practice or the teaching. So I really appreciate that point, Mark. I think that's excellent. You know, as far as these practices that were in the past, are they still valid in the present? You know, there's other considerations that we have to use to judge that. You know, we've been talking about in Chapter 8, meat offered to idols. You know, that's not a problem today. I don't think any of us have to worry about meat offered to idols. But there's principles in that passage in which those things happened in the past that we bring into the present. And so the question is, is have the revelatory and the sign gifts ceased or not? If they have, then, you know, we speak of these things as being in the past. And if they have not, then, as you said, we speak of them as being in the present. So thank you for those comments and really appreciate your spirit and respect your position. and thank you for expressing it. Really grateful, Mark, for your voice here on the West Coast Bible Study. All right, we are clear out of time. We will stop with Mark's comment, and we will pick up this passage tomorrow. We talked about the principle of edification in our exercise of spiritual gifts in this first section. Tomorrow we will talk about the issue of order in the exercise of spiritual gifts in the next section. So however you exercise spiritual gifts in the church, Remember, it's for other people, and it's to build them up, it's not for you and your self-glorification. And that's the big principle of our passage today. Alright, are there any final prayer requests before Jerry leads us in prayer? Please come down with your prayer request. Alright Jerry, 887ER, go ahead and lead us in prayer, please. Hello, Ray. Almighty God, we come to you this morning grateful for another day and for this next. I'll be returning this frequency now to regular amateur use. This is WB7MX. I'll be clear and standing by. KK7PDI. David, KK7PDI, go ahead. Yeah, good morning again, Max. I appreciate so much your doing the narration of all the comments made. I appreciate it and enjoyed the study as well. And it was just good to be here today. And you know, it's not control. I have to... navigate some pretty choppy waters from time to time. And I just appreciate your chin-up and, you know, the passage I remember somebody coming to me one day and they said, "Keep your chin-up, David the Lionheart. You just gotta keep pressing on." And these are areas that some people struggle with, but I, like you, encourage them to study more and more and look at the history, look at what we have in our history, look at the of the Church and look at how it has changed over the years. I just want to be part of the New Testament Church, but at the same time I want to make sure I practice and do what they did and understand what they did wrong. And I appreciate today so much because the study addressed the problems that were happening within the Church which Paul addressed, and that was the infighting that took place as well, and the difference between the gifts, because some wanted more preeminence. and he had to address it because there's problems. And I'm glad that we don't have that today. And I'm glad that we can be unified, that we can be together and understand what the scriptures teach and to follow it accordingly. But anyway, I appreciate how you navigated all that today. And again, thank you for all your efforts, Max. Just appreciate it so much. Back to you, Kilo Kilo 7, Papadelti, India. All right, David, thank you for the encouragement. Yep, sometimes it's like riding a bucking bronco here, but you know what? We stay in the saddle, and we just keep going forward. So anyway, thanks for the encouragement and the affirmation and the God be the glory and just try to do the best I can and to help us all grow in our walk. And we're not always going to agree, but we all are always going to try to edify each other and love each other and build each other up in the faith. I would like to acknowledge Carol, KK7TPO. Carol, I see you there on the Utah SDR, and also Dave, KE7WKI. Sometimes when I get going here on the Bible study, things are so busy, I don't have time to look at my SDRs, but I see you both there and appreciate you being there. So anyway, that's Carol, KK7TPO, and Dave, KE7WKI. We got you both checked in. Thanks for being here. All right, WB7MX is going by. 5 Yankee. 5 Yankee, go ahead. Why can't pigs play soccer? Why can't pigs play soccer? Ummm, I don't know. Go ahead. Because they hog the ball. Because they hog the ball right. Hey, Beck, you know, I finally sold my vacuum cleaner. Do you know why? I have no idea. It was just gathering dust. Ha ha ha ha ha. Thanks for sharing. Yeah, thank you too. All right, real good, Beck. Appreciate you being there. How you guys doing? How we're doing. Sandy's been working on trying to make the sourdough bread rise and trying to... Today she's going to make a flop. It's not working right, but we're going to see how it turns out anyway. Bert said we're going to have little stone biscuits that we can use to throw at the enemy, I guess. And I've been working on putting that HF radio in the jeep. Talk about work. A lot of pre-fab stuff, but I'm enjoying it. Yeah, copy that, copy that. Well, you know, the sailors used to eat something called hardtack. And what hardtack was is it's flour and water. That's all it is. You mix it together. And then you bake it at a fairly low temperature in the oven for three or four hours. And the idea is that you get all the moisture out, okay? And then because it's dry, it doesn't mold or anything, and as long as you keep it dry, it will keep forever. And then when you go to eat it, you know, you can either break it off in your mouth and moisten it with saliva, or you can use some water. And it's a way of keeping flour for a long, long, long time when you're going on journeys. Well, you guys sort of kind of, in a way, have heart attack. So consider yourself historical adventurers who are going back in time. and experiencing what the pioneers did, and you can really feel virtuous about eating that hard bread. Over. Hi, Roger. You know, you started talking about that. Have you ever watched the movie True Grit? No, I think that's a John Wayne movie, isn't it? Yeah, Roger. Okay. It wouldn't do any good to explain it then, except for he had some things... I think his little cook was Yen Lee, made a thing for him called corn dodgers. And for some reason, when you were talking about that bread or biscuits, it made me think of corn dodgers. - Yeah, well, you know, the thing about it is that even if your bread is a little bit hard, it's still nutritious. and just go ahead and eat that and enjoy it and moisten it with a little bit of water or milk. You can put it in a bowl, pour some milk on it, and, you know, eat it that way. There's lots of ways to eat hard bread. The other thing you can do is make French toast with it. And there's nothing like sourdough French toast. So however it turns out, it's still, you can eat it one way or the other. Over. Roger, that sounds like a good idea. I'm going to find out today. The first test we can see how hard it is. I know it's not too hard. I'm going to warm it up a little bit in the microwave or the oven and put a little butter and jelly on it. Yep, sounds good, sounds good. Any movement on Sandy's hip surgery, has she gotten an appointment for that? I have not heard a word. Sounds like you gotta ring their bell. Yeah, and I finally have an appointment to have my knee worked on. They're going to do therapy, and it's not until May the 1st. Can you believe that? Wow. Yeah, I don't know what's going on with our healthcare system, but they're managed to systematically destroy it. You know, I remember when Kathy and I first got married, You know, we were able to buy health insurance, you know, with maybe 5% of our income, full coverage, great health care, same-day stuff. Health care used to be fantastic. And now I think especially with Obamacare and all the government meddling, they've pretty much destroyed it. And it's really sad to see how that when the government gets involved in the free market, they just wreck and ruin it. And I guess the idea is to make the whole system so bad that then people will cry out for national health care, which will be an absolute disaster. But anyway, that's my two cents on the health care industry. Over. Roger, well, your two cents is exactly what I feel and what I think, including where it started from and the name that it's tied to. I was going to say something. I can't remember what it is now. But it's terrible. Absolutely terrible. You're right. We did have better health care. All right, Beck. Well, real good. I'll continue to pray that you guys get an appointment. This is WB7MAX with Alpha Alpha 5 Yankee. Thank you. I appreciate that very much. And hey, guys, you and Kathy have a wonderful day. And again, happy Valentine's Day to her. I don't know if you bought her a card or not. My wife bought me a card, and I've been so busy with working on the car and stuff, I didn't buy mine one, and I'm feeling guilty over it. But I'll survive. Hopefully, there'll be another Valentine's Day for me to make up for it. Roger? - Copy that. Well, just tell her every day is Valentine's Day, and so you can take her out any old day, over. - Every day but Sunday. - Copy that. That's the Lord's Day, yep. - AK-6, okay. - AK-6, okay. Jeff, go ahead. Thanks for that text to let me know that stuff arrived yesterday. Really thrilled to hear that. It actually got there pretty quick. Yeah, I did. It was in good shape, and I've got it sitting here waiting for my radio to arrive. I tried to get on their website and figure out what their shipping schedule was and wasn't able to figure that out. I'm sure I could call somebody, but probably they're getting 800 calls a day. You know how that goes. It'll be here when it gets here, but thank you for that, Jeff. That is going to be so helpful, and it's going to be huge in terms of not having to run that radio with a computer. Over. Yeah, no problem. And I can probably get you checked into our remote here at some point if you want. I would like that. Yeah, that would be great. Over. Okay. There you go. You got a voice from California there. All right. Sounds good, Max. We'll work it on and figure it out. All right, real good, yeah. There was no manual in the box at all, so I'm not sure what all the buttons and switches do, but I'm sure that I can get on their website and there's no doubt a manual there. Is that correct, over? Yeah, you can download the manual online. It's just you're looking at the front panel of the radio is what you're looking at. Yeah, copy that. Okay, well, real good. Yeah, if we could get hooked up with your remote, that way, you know, I'd have options. If for some reason the station went down or the antenna went down or whatever. Yeah, that's a pretty good alternative. I'm not sure it might get you hooked up also with Idaho. That is an incredible system we have up there. Yeah, right. So you got one in California, one in Idaho, is that correct? Yeah, one in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. That one has a 600 foot loop antenna 100 feet near. Unbelievable. And you'll hear that one. Oh yeah, no, it doesn't get any better than a loop antenna up in the air like that. That's just, I think, the best of the best. It truly is. Works fantastic. So we'll talk about that and figure that part out, but certainly at the very least you can write it all in. Yeah, copy that. So how's the Bible printing going? Did you get enough funds to go ahead and initiate a printing? How are things there? We're not there yet, and still working on it. I'm actually making a trip out to North Carolina on March 26th, and I'm going to go visit the Graham family, a friend of mine out there, Billy Cranston, and meeting with them. And actually, I am in discussions with them about taking over this ministry when I get too old to deal with it. doing that meeting with the pastor of Elevation Church out there and then also going to Fort Jackson to meet the chaplains out there. Well that sounds good. You know, succession plans are always important. I'm glad you're working on that and getting that in place because I absolutely don't want that thing to die, you know, when the time comes. along with your death. And so I'm really, really glad to hear that you're going that way. Now, last I heard, you had a bunch of Navy ship chapels that you were lined up to put in. How's that going, Mark? Well, It's on hold for the time being. There is a chaplain that we've been working with in Japan, and he is being transferred to San Diego to be in charge of 40 ships and 80 chaplains. That is a massive open door, and his goal in life is going to be to get chapels in every ship he can. Yeah. Yeah, copy that. So we're kind of waiting on him to come and take his command and be able to start doing things, is that correct? Yeah, that's correct. That's Chaplain Brown. And what a sweet man of God. He's just all over the God side of things, which is awesome. Well, that's wonderful. Yeah, I know that chaplains can vary in terms of their quality and commitment. And it's good to hear that there's a sincere, genuine man of God that's actually interested in the spiritual welfare of the troops. Yeah, you know, I can't imagine that they didn't plan for chapels in the ships when they built them. You know, these guys are out at sea like for nine months at a time. And some of them, you know, it seems like they need to have a place to have a church service. Do they have church services in the men's halls or something? Or how does that work? That's a great question. When they don't have a chapel, I think there's a little bit of gathering here and there, but nothing planned at all. Now, of course, where we have put chapels, they've got full-blown services going on. And we've also supplied them with a laptop full of Christian music, videos and everything so that they've got music that they can worship the Lord with. Also, we've supplied them with instruments and sound equipment, a projector and all that kind of stuff in most of these. So we have a little bit of a plan together. We're getting it set up so that people can actually donate a chapel on a ship. We'll tell you what ship is going on. We could even put a plaque on there with your name on it if you like, whatever. But we're setting that up as well. So we've got a few things in the plans, over. Yeah, that sounds great. So what's it cost to put in a chapel, about $15,000 to $20,000? Well you hit the nail on the head. Yeah, we're figuring about 15,000. The labor of course, no big deal because we just get volunteers and we go do it in one day. We're the one day chapel guys. Yeah, copy that. So it's just a matter of purchasing the equipment and then volunteers get it installed and make sure it's functional, turn it over to the chaplain. I imagine each ship has its own chaplain. Is that correct? They do. Sometimes they have two. And these carriers that we've been doing have 4,000 men and women on it. And come on, you've got to believe there's some who need some worship in there. Well, copy that, yeah. So anyway, yeah, if the chaplain can use the chapel to have services away from all the distractions and machinery and all the other stuff that goes on that ship, that's great. Because, you know, people need a place that's separate for worship so that they can... Focus on the Lord in an undistracted fashion and in an environment that's conducive to that. So, Jeff, that's a wonderful ministry. Keep us updated on when you're able to get started on that. I will do that, and hopefully the Lord keeps me healthy and encouraged also. You know, discouragement is always a factor, and I actually suffer from that once in a while. when things are moving along as quick as I like. I love seeing things happen in a real hurry. And in my life, that doesn't happen very often. And for example, the funds have to come before we order Bibles. And we're not quite there yet. We're certainly getting there. And God will make that happen when it's supposed to happen. So not concerned about that at all, but because I've seen the history. We've been doing this since 2006. There has not been a single time when the Lord didn't come through and head over. Yeah, amen, and he will. And, you know, that's the whole issue of timing. God's timing is so much different than ours, you know. And he works in longer time frames, and we tend to want to see things happen. And, you know, patience with God's providence. is something that I know I have to cultivate because, like you, I'm a doer. I want to see things happen. But we've got to be careful not to do that in the flesh and push things that God's not ready to push yet. So, you know, it says in Isaiah 40, they that wait on the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings as eagles. They shall walk and not be weary. They shall run and not faint." And so that's something I've had to learn is just sit back, wait on God and the unfolding of His plan and not have anxiety about the fact that things aren't happening as fast as I would like to see them go. God is infinitely wise in the way in which He manages His kingdom, its resources, and the things that occur within it. And we have to trust in the Lord with all our heart and lean not on our own understanding, because our own understanding says, "Let's get this done yesterday." And God says, "Um, you know, maybe six months, maybe two years, maybe two decades." And, you know, we just have to bow to His wisdom and say, "Lord, not my will, but Thine, be done." Over. Yeah, I've had to get used to that. But, you know, look at the results. I mean, even though it's 10-0,
