You know, she's I think quite good in spirits, which is the answer to our prayers. Thank you. All right, this is WB7MAX next to the West Coast Bible Study. We're going to begin our Bible study today. We are in 1 Corinthians 9, verses 24 to 27. That's 1 Corinthians 9, 24 to 27. And Paul continues to talk about the disciplines of the Christian life and the He's talking in particular about exercising self-control and self-restraint in the area of Christian liberty for the sake of others and for reaching them with the gospel. And so Paul exercises a restraint on Christian liberties in order to ensure... that he as a person has credibility and is able to have a response to those who falsely accuse him. He's also restraining his Christian liberties in order that the gospel might be more effective and reach more people. So that's our context. Well then he launches into a general discussion about self-restraint in the area of doing battle with sin. And we're going to see this in chapter 9 and verse 24 all the way to chapter 10 and verse 15. And then after that, he's going to return to this issue of Christian liberty. So this is a big deal to him. And so he started it in chapter 8. He continues it in chapter 9. and then he will finish it out in chapter 10. But in this section, 924 through 1015, he's dealing with our personal battle against sin and the importance of exercising self-control there and self-denial there as well. so that we defeat sin and sin doesn't defeat us in our personal walk with the Lord. And he reaches way back into the Old Testament there in chapter 10. I could pull out some illustrations, but in our passage today, he's using the illustrations of an athletic contest to talk about the battle, the race, if you will, between us and sin. And either sin is going to win the race or we're going to win the race. And so he talks about the self-disciplines that are necessary to defeat sin in the race of sanctification. All right, that's our section today we're going to be talking about. I'm going to ask George, K2KJX. George, if you could open this platform today, please. Roger, Roger, K2KJX. Our Heavenly Father, thank you for your love and kindness and patience and mercy with us and for providing a way for redemption through the Lord Jesus, who took our punishment, our sin, and shed his blood for the forgiveness and rose from the grave to defeat our death sentence. Help us to put our faith and trust in you, Lord Jesus, as our Savior. You give us your spirit, you guide us in truth, and you heal us as we live. We pray for our leaders that they make decisions that honor you. Help us to look for opportunities to share your love with others that don't know you, to be looking out for you, and we desire most that you would come and take us away. Keep us in your word, Lord Jesus, as we walk with you. In your name, amen. Amen. Real good, George. Thank you for that prayer. May God be pleased to grant each of those requests. All right, that is George, K2KJX. All right, we are going to read together in 1 Corinthians 9, verses 24 to 27. I'll be reading here today. And I'll be reading out the King James Version. Verse 24, Paul says, Know you not that they which run in a race run all, but one receives a time to run that you may obtain. And every man that strives for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now, they put a corruptible crown on me, an incorruptible. Therefore, so run. I therefore, so run, not as uncertainly, so fried I, not as one that beats the air. but I keep under my body and bring it into subjection, lest that by any means when I have preached to others, I myself should be cast away. And that brings us to the end of Chapter 9. All right, any comments on this section, please come out your call card. Papa Alpha. and wait. And that's something that I have to double, double down, double, double down. And this goes right along with your spiritual walk, evaluating your spiritual walk, evaluating all aspects of your life. And you know, the point that you're making here that I think is so important, Scott, and that is that self-control is pervasive across our lives. You know, we've got the picture of an athlete, and he not only exercises self-control when he's running on the field, but also when he's off the field. And every part of his life is disciplined around one goal. And that is the goal of winning the race. And so here we've got this race, this battle against sin that resides in our flesh, in our bodies, as Paul says. And you know, Scott, in a lot of ways, this passage is just like Romans chapter 7 and chapter 8, where Paul talks in those passages about the struggle against remaining sin. And here he likens it to a race. And so self-control? Yeah, if we're not self-controlled in one area of our lives, we're probably not going to be self-controlled in any area of our lives. So it's a virtue we have to cultivate across all areas. You know, it's like if a man is not honest at work, he's also not going to be honest at home, he's also not going to be honest in the church. And if a man isn't self-controlled in the area that you used as an illustration, and that is eating, he's probably not going to be exercising self-control in other areas of his life as well. So it's something we have to recognize that we're in a race elsewhere. Paul calls it a battle, a war. And so there's this competition between sin and us, and sin wants to have the mastery. And we've got to fight harder for the victory than it does. and thereby defeat it. Alright, other comments, please come down. WB7VZL. Roger, WB7VZL, go ahead. Yeah, I wish I could hear people better, but this passage reminds one, and I dare anybody to watch it. It's the movie, I think it's on Netflix, it's called "The Game Changer." Yeah, Roger, thank you for that recommendation. Roger was talking about a movie on Netflix called The Game Changer and how the football team wanted to win, and so they made some dramatic changes in what they were doing, which enabled them to win. And, you know, the thing about this battle against sin is Thank you. ...with others to encourage others to guide and lead people to Christ. KB7, ZXM. Yeah, Kevin, thank you for bringing out that important concept of training, self-discipline, and focusing on the goal. How important that is, and we really see that in athletic contests where this one thing they do, and that is they prepare for their contest and everything else in their life in the lives of men like Samson and Solomon and Lot and David and Moses. And even though they were believers, they all suffered life-altering consequences because they lost some of the races against sin. And they suffered some severe consequences. And then there's those who completely lost, you know, and those are people who... people like Simon the Sorcerer and Judas and Esau and Demas and Ananias and Sapphira. These are all people who completely lost the race against sin and wound up going to hell. So this is not something that if we lose, well, it's no big deal. It's a big deal, because if you lose, there's consequences. I don't need to be here. And he just got up and walked out. And I'm going to compare that feeling with crossing the final in a race where you're running and running and running and you're exhausted. And you can see that up ahead of you. One day... Thank you. And he is there. And you might be in a fight. You might feel that you have been involved in whatever this is for so long. You are hopeless. You are not hopeless. And don't ever give up. Keep running. Okay. regardless of what the outlook looks like, because he is not unfailing towards you. He is watching you, and he will save you, and he will change your life. JJ7PVT. Mark, thank you so much for that extended explanation of not only the battle, but also... perspective that brings the victory. So grateful for that, Mark. Well said. Mark was just talking about the issue of besetting sin. He talked about the prodigal son and how the prodigal son one day realized, you know what, I don't have to be here. I have a father. And he just looked to his father, and he went back to the father. And, you know, that's what we have to do when we're in our worst circumstances and our greatest failures. remember you have a father remember there's no condemnation to those who are in christ remember that father loves you and just turn your focus on him go to him across that finish line with your eyes on him and god can and will and does bring deliverance so mark thank you for that encouragement that exhortation and sharing that personal testimony in your own life Okay, I have a comment here from Will Keetleike5Foxtrot. He says, Okay. Okay, I'm finding it. Yeah, well said. Well, you're either running towards heaven or you're running towards hell. There are no other destinations. There is no middle ground. And the question you have to ask yourself is, what is my direction? And our direction needs to be toward the Lord. Jesus says, come unto me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. take my yoke upon you and learn of me for my yoke is easy and my burden is light and you shall find rest for your souls for my yoke is easy and my burden is light so yeah you know we're all going to struggle and the question is are you going to struggle against sin or are you going to struggle under the consequences of sin? And it's really a no-brainer. It can be reduced to something as simple as what Will said. You're either running towards heaven or you're running towards hell. All right, other comments, please, come now. Is that X-Men 5-0 keys? Is that X-Men? Go ahead. Yeah, and Beck is also in there too, I think I doubled with. You know, and I was going to follow up, and I appreciate the comments, because they are all tied together in this. As you made the point, you know, I think Max said, you know, he's not going through the motions in training. He's not just airboxing. He's in the ring in a heavyweight match, as we all should be. And this also kind of ties to really the particle sun in a sense, too. In his preparation of training, you can also look at Ephesians 6, because we are dealing with spiritual warfare. So it is a day-by-day thing. process, our sanctification, and our, you know, staying on track, staying in the race, staying prepared, and, you know, in preparing for that spiritual warfare on a daily basis is so important. And again, that's why in the Lord's wisdom and His providence, the Spirit of God will always guide us to a local church. to be part of the fellowship of a local church. But I appreciate Mark's sharing too, because when you don't, when we do drift, and we often sometimes find ourselves drifting if we're not mindful of these things, and then pretty soon we're lured and tempted by the ways of the world. And I, you know, there's a period of my life that I thank God so much for taking me away from from bringing me out of, because I certainly drifted as well. You know, I was blessed to have some, you know, position. I was really wanted. It was a lot of hard work, but I thought, well, if I work hard, I can play hard. It gave me some blessing, I said. and being able to play guitar and play music. So, you know, that led into a lifestyle of, you know, at the time it was, you know, sex, drugs, and rock and roll was the world's philosophy. And, boy, you know, you could really indulge in those things if you weren't mindful. You got to have attention from the ladies. You were drawing everything away from God in every way. And so, you know, this is circling back. This is not just going through the motions. When we live our life as believers, it's a very serious, sober manner, but important for us to understand the importance and the value of each day by day, renewing our faith in Christ. KB7 set example. Yeah, Kevin, well said. Thank you for that. I know there was another station that had a comment that was trying to make a comment. Other station, please come down. 5 Yankee? 5 Yankee, go ahead. Yes, there's been a lot of explanations of what this passage is saying spiritually, and I appreciate that, and I see that. And what I'm trying to point out is on a worldly basis, on the 24th, It says, "Do you not know those who are in the race all run, but only one receives the prize?" Which has been mentioned two or three times. And this to me, I read it as kind of like a message to those that think we're all like the board, you know? We're all the same. Each one of us are different, and your commitment towards Christ determines if you're going to get to be with Him or not. And this poor mentality that we all get the prize is a bad thing, because if we don't learn that you can lose, there's no incentive to go for more to get the prize. And I really don't know any other way to explain it other than this is a good message for the left and to let them know that we're not all the same. We're not all going to get the same thing based on little commitment or moderate commitment or a lot of commitment. Only those who really try harder are the ones that are going to win. Yeah, that's correct. There is no universal salvation where everyone gets the prize of eternal life no matter whether they tried or not. And while we don't earn our salvation, it's given to us as a free gift, yet nevertheless we have this battle with remaining sin. And, you know, it's important for us to understand in this passage we're not racing against each other. We're not fighting against each other for the mastery. All of us are racing against sin, and all of us are fighting against sin. And so there's just two people in this race. There's you and there's sin. And so it's those who... give that focused effort to the process of sanctification are those who persevere in the faith. And so the point is simply this pulpit wastes time and energy in non-spiritually productive activities. Every action, every word, every choice was viewed as a blow struck in the battle against sin. And he didn't waste his time doing things that had no impact on winning that battle against sin. And so if an effort is not productive towards beating back sin, and if it allows sin to advance and strike its own blows, then that effort needs to be redirected so it does effectively beat sin back. And so it's really important for us to engage in things like Bible reading and Bible study and and prayer, because all of those things are involved in obtaining the victory. And so the flesh says, oh, you know, sit down and watch that TV program. And the Spirit says, no, open your Bible and read that. Which one is going to be the most spiritually productive for defeating sin and drawing near to Christ? Which one is going to turn our eyes on Jesus and turn our eyes away from the world? And so those are the questions that we need to be asking ourselves. And so, yeah, Beck, you know, some people have the attitude that everybody deserves an A on their exam no matter how they did. That's not how God works. And so it's really important for us to show our faith by our works, and to show our faith by our constant battle against sin, and our constant focus, as Mark said, on Jesus, and our constant discipline of our lives, asking ourselves, how do each of these things in my life either contribute to my victory over sin or detract? from my victory over sin. And that's the discipline of the athlete. If something doesn't contribute to his conditioning and to his success in his race, then he's not going to do it. And so everything in our lives needs to be oriented around contributing to our spiritual walk and our spiritual success. So, yeah. Victory isn't given to the lazy, and it's not handed out indiscriminately. It's given to those who fight and who struggle and who war and who keep their focus right and their disciplines up. Thank you, Beck, for that comment. All right, other comments, come now. Mark, KJ7PVT, go ahead. Go ahead. Go ahead. Go ahead. Go ahead. Go ahead. Go ahead. Go ahead. Go ahead. - neglected to bring up was there were two life forms in that pig pen. One was a pig and the other one was a son. When you find yourself in that pig pen, you might be with a bunch of pigs, but you are not a pig, you are a son. And when that is the reason that you're a son, is that you have a relationship with the Father. And you may have thrust yourself away from that, or you may have drifted away, but you are not without hope. Don't let that come into your mind. And as we said before, when we turn around and change direction, that's the word that we use as Christians to be a good word. And you can use number 810 to keep your 1. I'm sorry. But you can't take the action in one direction and turning around and going completely the opposite direction. You might be a bunch of miles from your father, but that walkback is what we're talking about here at the race. And when you cross that finish line, so to speak, you go into the-- ...the father and there's all of the benefits of that. So, remembering that you're not a pig, you are a son. You're completely different. You might be an infant, but you are completely different. And then the other point that I want to make is that once you're out and it's not 3 and 2, you want to play it clear. But the statement always, when he loses, he doesn't give up. And every once in a while, you might be tempted to turn back. Remember where you came from. Remember that statement. Remember what that was like. For me, that's one thing that I never want to turn back to. And it forces me even deeper into the hunt with my favorite. Mark, thanks for that additional explanation of the story of the prodigal son. Really well said. You know, we may have involved ourselves into really bad company, but as Mark says, we're You know, the son was a son, and the pig were pigs, and the son was not a pig, and he needed to remember that. He belonged to the father. And so you can walk away from the pigs. You can walk away from those people, places, and situations that want to wallow in sin. And don't ever give up. of death and entrance into heaven, then you can, as it were, collapse into the arms of the Father. The race is over. The battle is done. And you have gotten the victory. So we have to remember what it was like in the Big Ten and remember not to go back there. You know, SIN wants to pretend like it didn't harm you the last time you did it. Well, it did. And if we remember that, that is always really helpful. All right. I have another comment here by way of text message. Let me see who that is, and we'll go from there. Okay. Let's see, what do we got here? All right, I don't see... Yeah, Will says, "Repentance is running towards Heaven instead of Hell." Okay, I think that must have been something else. All right, this is WB7MX. We're way out of time. We've got to stop here in about seven minutes. So I'm going to go ahead and close in prayer. I appreciate all the comments. We just need to be sure that we don't wind up like Balaam and Judas, those who preached to others and then they themselves were castaways. So let's continue to turn our faith towards the Father, go towards Him, fight the good fight of faith, use all the means of grace that are available to us, and keep our focus on the Father. All right, this is WB7MAX. Let's go to prayer.
