If I don't, please forgive me. I'll check them again in a little bit. But we do need to get started with our Bible study. I've not heard from Roger, WB7BZL, yet this morning. Roger, are you out there? Okay, negative contact on Roger. Okay, we're going to get started with our Bible study. And we are in 1 Corinthians chapter 5 verses 1 through 13. Now what I want to do is give a little introduction to this passage since it's been a little while. Since we talked together we weren't able to be on the radio. And as we've studied chapters 1 to 4 together, we've seen Paul's reproof of the Corinthians for their pride and their self-importance. That pride and self-importance led them to embrace worldly wisdom, and the result, as we saw, was strife and divisions in the Church. And so some were saying, I'm a Paul, I'm a Paulist, I'm a Peter, etc., But this was not the only problem that was produced by those who were puffed up with worldly pride. Not only did that worldly pride produce divisions in the Church, there was a number of other problems that also occurred because of that pride and worldly wisdom. And Paul deals with them throughout the remainder of this book. So after having dealt with the problem of strife and divisions, the next problem the Church at court has that Paul deals with is their toleration of sexual immorality within the church. And so here in chapter 5, Paul opens up the subject of corrective church discipline in relationship to the man who is committing open and ongoing fornication. And the problem is that the church knew about this behavior, and they did nothing to confront it or correct it. And not only did they do nothing to confront it or correct it, in fact, they were proud of themselves and puffed up over the fact that they were tolerating it. And so Paul tells them in no uncertain terms that such toleration of sin is not good for the one who is committing the sin, because it's destructive to his soul. It's not good for the church, because it introduces corruption into the church, and other people will imitate that behavior if it's not corrected. It's not good for their testimony to the lost because it's going to destroy their credibility with the community. And it's not good for the reputation of God. It makes them think God tolerates sexual immorality within his covenant community and that he is an unholy God. So Paul tells them that they have to deal with this person and his sin, and he tells them how they must do so. And the way they are to deal with this man and his sin is through the process of corrective church discipline. So that's why a new subject is being introduced here in chapter 5, but it is connected with a previous subject in that there's one more manifestation of unbridled and unrestrained pride in the following of human wisdom. instead of humility and following God's wisdom and the way in which the church functions. All right, well, that's a little bit of a summary of what we've seen here in this passage. I'm going to ask Scott in 7NPA. Scott, if you would open in prayer for us today, please. Yeah, you bet, Max. Let's go to the Lord in prayer. Father, as we gather around this table, we just grab the eraser and we clear everything that was bombarded into our mind yesterday. We thank you for a new slate bringing us through this night season. And as we prepare to open up the Holy Word. the scripture that you breathe life into, Father, we invite you into our heart. We invite you into our minds. Father, as these words that's laid here in this book, Father, I just pray that what you have for each and every one of us around the table, that Those words will illuminate up out of the pages and sear the thoughts of those words deep into our intellect. So, Father, we just pray for your, that you will be here among us. And we thank you and we glorify you, all coming through you. In Jesus' name, amen. Back there to you, Max, in 7 MPH. All right, Scott, real good. Thank you for that prayer. All right, any comments on this section? Well, I guess we've got to read it, don't we? Ha! Haven't read the section yet. Okay, I'll go ahead and read this since the band is so poor. You can all hear me on the Utah with Asim, the SDR, or perhaps some of you can hear me directly. All right, we're in 1 Corinthians chapter 5, and beginning at verse 1, I'm going to read the whole chapter. And I'm reading out of the King James Version. All right, 1 Corinthians 5, verse 1. It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife, and you are puffed up. and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you. For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present concerning him that hath so done this deed. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you are gathered together, and my spirit with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, to deliver such a one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. Your glorying is not good. Know you not that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? Purge out therefore the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, as you are unleavened. For even Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. Therefore, let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth." I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators; yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters: for then you must needs go out of the world. But now I have written unto you not to keep company with any man that is called a brother. be a fornicator or covetous or an idolater or a railer or a drunkard or extortioner what's that you want no not to hate for what have I to do to judge them that are without do not you judge them that are within But them that are without God judges. Therefore, put away from among yourselves that wicked person. All right, that brings us to the end of Chapter 5. Any comments on this section? Please come down with your call sign. KB7, Zedekson. KB7, Zedekson, go ahead. Boy, the band is deteriorating, but I'm hearing you okay on the Utah there in Mac. ...actuality, and according to the first one, the main one that he's pointing out here is which is the second taking place, and according to the Bible, that's a lot to say about that kid, that's it, that's Leviticus, uh, Leviticus, uh, Leviticus, uh, what, 2011, Deuteronomy 2230, I think it is, and, and, and another place... as well. The incident that was taking place. Even, this was so shocking because even Roman law did this. This was even beyond the, you know, the most acceptable in the pagan culture. And then to be proud of this within the church, Paul definitely calls it out for what it is. And sadly, we see this kind of mindset today. I know someone that friends with on Facebook who's homosexual. She posted this on Facebook actually yesterday. She said, oh, I just love everybody. It's so kind of people condemning our lifestyle because of their interpretation of the Bible. But it's not their interpretation of the Bible. The Bible clearly speaks to these things. And it's sad that they do. They just don't see this recognized as death. 87.9. Yeah, Kevin, good comments. Completely agree. You know, a lot of people try to avoid what the Bible says by saying that's your interpretation. No, it's not my interpretation. It's what the Bible says. And thank you for pointing out the fact that fornication is a broad term that encompasses every form of sexual deviancy. And so here we have a man who is having sex with his father's wife, his stepmother. And, you know, the church is tolerating this, and that's exactly what the church is doing today with homosexuality and with heterosexual fornication, where a couple is shacked up together, they're not married, and they're just living together, having sex, but not married. And so all of this sexual deviancy is labeled as fornication. And fornication is a term that encompasses homosexuality, incest, bestiality, any kind of sexual deviancy, rape. It's all included under the term fornication. And so the Church is putting up with this. Well... The Church should not put up with it, and that's the point Paul is making. The Bible is not ambiguous at all about what is permitted sexual behavior and what is not. All right, other comments. Thank you, Kevin, for that good introduction. All right, other comments. Please come down. Papa Alpha. Papa Alpha, go ahead. Yeah, I think it's really important. How did this immorality slip over into a sin such as this? And why was that not nipped in the bud there, Max? So I think what we can glean out of this is it's of the ultimate importance that each and every one of us around the table examine ourselves on a daily basis, whether we go into the quiet place or wherever it is. and seek God's face in our sins and turn 180 degrees away from that. You know, as it goes into a little unleavened ruins of the leavened bread. And how I look at that, Max, my analogy is that every single day, Every single day, I climb up on the steer tire of the truck and check the radiator. I take the cap out of the radiator, off the radiator, and I take a flashlight and I look down into the radiator. And they say, "Well, why do you do this, Scott?" And I say, "It's because of the oil cooler." The oil cooler can rupture and then you allow oil into the radiator. And when this happens and you run it, you can A, ruin an engine, or B, it's a huge clean-up mess. You have to pull out the radiator and completely go through it, separate the oil from the water and the whole engine. And just this last summer, That thing happened. I went to fire the truck up in the morning. I crawled up. I opened up the radiator crop, and I looked down in there, and there was oil in the antifreeze. I didn't even fire up the engine. I called for the mechanic, and we took care of it. And they said by doing that, the maintenance to get this fixed was an extreme minimal. because we didn't put oil throughout the engine. And the same thing is 11 and 9-level head. But this is how it works in my life there, man. Back it comes into the MPA. Scott, what a great analogy. Thank you so much for that. You know, when you take care of problems when they're little, they become much easier to deal with. And that is sure the case with us and our descent into sexual immorality. We have to nip those pots in the bud. We have to cut off those things that lead us into temptation. We have to cultivate faithfulness to our life. We have to stay close to the Lord. And so that's a great question, Scott. How did it get this far? Well, there's a Corinth was an extremely immoral city. And in fact, they worshipped the god Aphrodite, the goddess of love. And they had a huge temple on the hill overlooking Corinth. And temple prostitution was a big deal, very common. Corinth was known as a city of rampant immorality. And so the people of Corinth had been desensitized to sexual immorality because it was so pervasive in the culture. And prior to their conversion, they had committed so much of it. And so I think that's part of what's going on here. But nevertheless, we don't go by cultural standards of toleration. We go by what does the Bible say proper sexual behavior is. And the Bible makes it real clear that proper sexual behavior is contained to sex between one man and one woman within the marriage covenant. And so the Bible says marriage is honorable in all, and the bed is undefiled. But adulterers and whoremongers God will judge. So God invented sex. He thinks it's great. He told Adam and Eve to engage in it. He says be fruitful and multiply. So God is not against sex. He's against sex that is destructive of the family, sex that's destructive of individuals, sex that's destructive of children, and sex that's destructive of the culture. And so this is the reason why he has these senses, because the only way you can build a culture and a family and have joy and peace and happiness is through heterosexual covenant marriage between one man and one woman, together raising kids and teaching them in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. And all other forms are aberrant and destructive of individuals and societies. So anyway, Scott, great point there. Thank you for that. We need to nip this stuff in the bud before it gets out of control in our own lives. We need to put those fences up and cut out the people, places, and circumstances that are going to lead us in the wrong direction and cultivate those things that lead us in the right direction. Scott, N7NPA, thank you for that comment. All right, other comments, please come down. Okay, and fly those? Team, fly them. Please go ahead. Hey, uh, I wanted to say that we make any comment about the, uh, stepmother's actions or parking that really focuses on the man. For example, in first flight, the stepmother delivered over two things for construction. Yeah, the reason why the woman is not mentioned here is because she was probably not a Christian and not a member of the church. Obviously, she would be subject to church discipline if she were in the church. You'll notice the will over in verse 12 says, It says, "What have I to do to judge them that are without?" That is, those who are outside the Church. The Church is not in the business of exercising pronouncements on unsaved people who are outside the Church. But this man apparently was a member who was within the Church, and that's the reason why he's addressed and the woman is not addressed. Back to you there, Will. Thanks for that help, Gabe, my man. Okay, thank you for that, Will. So, anyway, any other comments on this passage, please come down. Zedekson, go ahead. Yeah, very good comment, and Scott, thank you for being like earlier, and your comment is very good. And this is the point, you know, as we picture morality, I hope we picture morality like this as rebellion. Now, this wasn't a guy struggling with definition. This guy is hoping rebellion of God, of God, of God, of God, of God, of God. The dumpster was held within your weekly off-going product. Where you can get the plug-in to the World Wide Web. Why not sin all the more? Because God's grace will surely cover what we're not convinced. Sin, open sin is a sin to God. And when we, knowing that you willingly and greatly sin against God, especially with sexual immorality like this, it is open rebellion to God. you know, sin is so bad, it separated us from God for eternity, and if not for Jesus, then it's not finding itself in our place. God, which was cruel, cruel, I should say, under God. So for us, this, this, this, this, this, that is something might, is, is just, global experience. But to your point Scott, I think we are already caught off because the point of that is we have to have church faith. And it's not only because a lot of us would much rather talk about God's love, His grace and mercy, Ephesians 2:8 and 9, but also we have to deal with sin in our lives and sin as believers. And that is the process that takes place. So for all Yeah, once again, good comments, Kevin. You're spot on. And, you know, the important point here is that if you tolerate sin in the assembly, it spreads within the assembly. And that's why he uses this illustration of leaven. You put a little piece of yeast in a lump of dough, and eventually it spreads throughout the whole thing. And if this behavior was tolerated... by this man in the church, then it would pretty soon be pervasive throughout the church. And that's why we have to exercise church discipline. If you tolerate bad behavior in one of your children in your home, pretty soon all the children are engaging in the bad behavior. And so this is why he says, in verse 6, know you not that a little leaven leavens the whole of, purge out therefore the old leaven that you may be a new love as you are unleavened. So leaven here is a picture of sin and that's why you've got to get sin out of the church in terms of, as Kevin well said, This is not someone who's struggling with sin and trying to overcome it. This is someone who is open and willful to fire and self-justifying in their sin. All of us struggle with sin in the church. You don't put people out of the church because they're struggling with sin and trying to overcome it. You put people out of the church who are unrepentant and rebellious. and defiant and self-justifying in their sin. And that's what this guy was doing. The net would like to go to Gene, K7GWRC there. Gene, thank you for that. All right, I have a comment here from Keith, WB7RKR. Keith brings up an interesting point. Now, we said what this man was committing was incest. That is... There is -- marriage is forbidden or sexual activity is forbidden between those who are too close in blood and those who are too close in affinity. Affinity means that they're too close in marriage, okay? So... you don't marry your father's uncle or your father's sister. Not because, you know, there's a blood relation or you're, pardon me, you have a father and a mother. You don't marry uncles and aunts is the point that I'm trying to make there. So that's being too close in blood, too close in affinity. would be marrying someone who's too close by way of marriage. And so Keith brings this up. He says, "That brings up an interesting question from the old days. How many children did Adam and Eve have in the beginning?" Well, the answer is Adam and Eve had a bunch of children, and in the beginning, brothers married sisters. That's the only way it worked, okay? In the first and second generation, by the time the third generation came along, that was no longer necessary. And so marrying a sister or a brother is a positive prohibition. It's not a moral prohibition. What I mean by that is it wasn't a sin for Adam's children to marry each other. But as the effect of the fall came along, God issued the command. You're not to marry brothers, you're not to marry sisters, you're not to marry aunts, you're not to marry uncles, you're not to marry children or grandchildren. Those are too close in blood, and so therefore those marriages are prohibited. And then marriage is too close in affinity. We're prohibited. And all of that is back in the book of Leviticus, chapter 18. In any event, Keith, the answer to your question is initially brothers and sisters did get married. Eventually God prohibited that practice by way of positive command, and so therefore it is forbidden today. All right, any other comments on this passage? Please come down with your call sign. Bob Alvin. Talk on for the rest. Max, I think we have a look at the last half of... Well, maybe it's not the last half. I guess it would be, yeah, the last half of 7. In that for Christ, our Passover also has been sacrificed. So when we sin... As Paul's putting out, what are you guys thinking? The Passover lamb, Jesus Christ, was sacrificed, and now you're stomping on top of him. You're stomping on top of him. You're pulling the wings off butterflies, and you're stomping on baby rabbits. That's what you're doing. That's what you're doing when you sin there, man. In 7 MPA. Yes, God, well said. We are trampling on Christ, His blood, His sacrifice, His purpose for being here. That would like to acknowledge George K2KJX. Good morning, George. See you there on the afternoon day SDR. You're right. You know, Jesus died to save us from our sins, not only from their penalty, but also from their practice. And when we sin in order that grace may abound, or when we sin because we think, well, those sins are paid for anyway. I can just set up a storm and get away with it. You're right, Scott, that's trampling on Christ. I wanted to also point out this verse 10 and 11. well 9, 10, and 11 in chapter 9 verse 9 he says I wrote unto you an epistle not to company with fornicators now that's a letter that we don't have obviously God didn't intend to save it and include it in the canon of scripture and it's like the letter to Laodicea we don't have that either um Of course, they're mentioned in the book of Revelation, but there was a letter Paul wrote to the Laodiceans that we don't have either. So, not all of Paul's writings were preserved by God to be included in Scripture, which is fine. We've got all we need. But he wrote in a previous letter to them, don't company with fornicators. And now he's clarifying what he said. He's saying, look, I'm not telling you not to have any interaction with the fornicators of the world, or the covenants, or the extortioners, or the idolaters, for then you'd have to leave the world. The only way you're not going to have contact with unsaved people who behave this way, in this way is to not live in this world, because the vast majority of the people are unsaved, and we interact with them every day in business and in social situations, and the only way we're going to ever carry the gospel to them is to have some contact with them and to witness to them. But what he's saying here in verse 11, don't keep company with someone who claims to be a Christian, someone who's called a brother, and he's living in willful, open defiance of God's laws. He's a fornicator, he's a covenants, he's an idolater, a wrangler, that's somebody who tells other people off with violence and anger, a drunkard, an extortioner, with such a warrant don't even eat. And so the idea there is that we're to cut off fellowship with people who claim to be Christians but who live in open, willful defiance of God's moral guidelines for how Christians ought to behave. Now, all Christians are sinners. We all struggle with sin. He's not talking about separating from growing Christians who are struggling with sin and trying to overcome it. We're all plagued with sins. We all struggle with sins. But what do we say about those sins? I wish I wasn't doing those things. Like Paul says in Romans chapter 7, he said, I wish I wasn't committing these sins. He says, in my heart of hearts, I don't want to do this. Well, you can call a fellowship from a person like that. That's the person you come alongside. You take in as a fellow church member. You love them, and together you overcome sins together. He's talking about people who, like Kevin was talking about earlier, You know, oh, I'm committing this sin of homosexuality, people just need to understand, blah-de-blah. Those are the people that we do not view as fellow Christians, and we do not extend Christian fellowship to them. They are objects of evangelism. We do not take them into the church. So that passage is an important one we need to understand before we leave this text. All right, other comments, please come down. Okay. Alright, any more comments? I'm not hearing anybody. Any relays? All right, I'm still not hearing anyone. Okay, well, this passage is an important one, and it tells us that the church needs to be kept morally pure. That doesn't mean it's full of sinless people. What it means is that it's people who are not engaging in willful, open, defiant sin against God, and then justifying it and encouraging others to engage in it. Those kind of people have to be disciplined out of the church for the preservation of the church, and for the good of the soul that you discipline. You know, a lot of people think, oh, church discipline is so mean, it's so cruel. No, it's the most loving thing you can do to call someone out of, this behavior that is leading directly towards apostasy, and ultimately damnation if they don't repent of it. And so he says in verse 5, you're to deliver such a one unto Satan, that is, out into the world, where Satan is out of the protection of the Church, for the destruction of the flesh, that is, the destruction of the sins of the flesh, that the Spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. So the goal of Church discipline is salvation. It's not condemnation. It's saying, brother, your behavior is not exemplary of someone who has genuine saving faith, I was calling N7NPA, is anybody hearing me? Yeah, yeah, I'm sure they are. I can hear you just fine. 5 Yankee is. Okay, I just wasn't hearing anybody else, and that's kind of unusual. Okay, let's go ahead and go to prayer then. Are there any final prayer requests, anybody out there? Okay, we're going to go ahead and pray. Our kind and gracious Father, we thank you for this passage. Father, we're sorry for the poor bank conditions today, but Lord, you're in control of that too. And Lord, we pray that you would give us good bank conditions and that you would cause... us to be able to hear each other clearly. Father, we just thank you for this passage. Help our churches to be pure and not tolerate open, willful, defiant sin that invites others to participate in those sins. Father, give our pastors courage to call out such individuals, name their sins, and call upon the congregation to put them under church discipline. That is, put them out of the membership. Declare them to be unsaved people. Jesus himself authorized this in Matthew chapter 18, where he says, if he doesn't hear the church, let him be undue as a heathen and a publican. Treat him as an unsaved person until his behavior conforms with his profession. And so, Lord, I just pray that you would help us to have churches who are repentant, churches who are pursuing holiness and sanctification and godliness, and churches, Father, who are wise in discerning between someone who is struggling with sin and someone who is justifying sin. Lord, I just pray that you give us wisdom in not comforting other Christians wherever they are. if they are living in open, willful, defiant sin, whether a heterosexual sin, a homosexual sin, or any other type of sexual deviancy. Father, we recognize that our culture is shot through with tremendous sexual wickedness. Father, it's easy to become desensitized to that. Help us, Father. to be offended and horrified at the evil conduct that is justified in our culture and is normalized in our culture. And Lord, I pray that we would continue to uphold biblical standards of sexual morality. Father, we just want to pray today for Pete W6AOX. His friend Bill passed away at 86 years of age. Father, we pray for Bill's family. Lord, that you would bring peace and comfort to them. Pete tells us that Bill was a believer. And Lord, we trust he's with you. Lord, we thank you for... Pete's friendship with him. And Lord, we pray that you would comfort Pete. We pray that you would comfort all of those who knew Bill and cause each of them to reflect upon their need for redemption and reconciliation with you as well. And Father, may they not trust in themselves or their own self-righteousness, but in Christ alone and his forgiveness for their sins. Father, we pray today for our brother, Glenn, KJ7UMW. His left eye lens was replaced yesterday. Lord, I pray for healing in that eye that he would be able to see well. As he has his right eye lens replaced in February, Lord, I pray that that would go well and that his vision would be restored. He wouldn't need glasses anymore. And that, Father, he would be able to see in a clear and balanced way out of both eyes. Father Jim, in Southern DKE, asked us to pray for Israel. Lord, we do pray for peace in that land. We pray for wisdom. Lord, we pray for the people of Iran, that they would be able to throw off that wicked Islamic government who has no compunction about slaughtering their people and demanding that they bow down to the satanic religion of Islam. Father, I pray that those people would have freedom from that tyranny, and Lord, you would be pleased to bring that to pass. Father, we thank you for Haley and for her improvement in her personal life and walk.
