### Bible Study Summary: 1 Corinthians 3:16-23 and Church Unity

#### Introduction
In this Bible study, participants delved into 1 Corinthians 3:16-23, focusing on the importance of unity within the church and the significance of the church as the temple of God. The discussion was led by Max (WB7MAX) with contributions from various members, including Kevin (KB7ZXN), Jeff (AK6OK), Beck (WS7-SAB), and others. The study emphasized the need for believers to trust in Jesus and not in ministers of the gospel, and the importance of not defiling the church, which is the temple of God.

#### Divisions in the Church
The group discussed the issue of divisions within the church, a recurring theme in 1 Corinthians. The passage highlights that the church is the temple of God, where the Holy Spirit resides. This metaphor underscores the sacredness of the church and the need for its members to treat it with reverence. The discussion pointed out that divisions within the church can defile this temple, and that believers should strive to maintain unity and peace. The group emphasized the importance of reorienting one's thinking to the foundation of the Bible and trusting God for what is not known.

**Discussion Questions:**
- How do divisions within the church affect the spiritual life of its members?
- In what ways can we promote unity and peace within our local church communities?
- How can we ensure that our actions do not defile the temple of God?

#### Faith and "Why" Questions
The group also discussed the theme of faith in relation to "why" questions. Drawing from Habakkuk 2, Romans 1, and 1 Corinthians 3:18-20, the discussion highlighted that God's answers to "why" questions often involve faith. The group noted that the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God, and that living by faith is essential. This theme encouraged members to trust in God's wisdom and not rely solely on human understanding.

**Discussion Questions:**
- How can faith help us navigate through difficult "why" questions in our lives?
- In what ways can we grow in faith and trust in God's wisdom?
- How does living by faith affect our relationships with others and our approach to life's challenges?

#### Church as the Bride of Christ
The study also covered the metaphor of the church as the bride of Christ. The group emphasized that the church is not a building but the assembly of baptized believers. This understanding underscores the importance of treating the local church with reverence and protecting it as the bride of Christ. The group discussed the consequences of defiling the church, which can incur the wrath of Jesus.

**Discussion Questions:**
- How can we better understand and appreciate the church as the bride of Christ?
- What actions can we take to protect and honor the church as the temple of God?
- How does this metaphor influence our behavior and attitudes within the church community?

#### Prayer Requests and Closing Prayer
The study concluded with prayer requests for various individuals, including Chris (KL5 Sugar Charlie) undergoing an angioplasty, Ed experiencing a cold and poor band conditions, Darrell with urinary tract complications, Lucas with hearing degradation due to a mask, Alice, Haley, Cody, and Anthony (W7DGM) on a long road trip. Scott (N7NC, 7MPA) led the closing prayer, covering harmony in families and communities, civil unrest, and the need for peace. The prayer also included specific individuals and their health concerns, and grace and mercy for daily living.

**Discussion Questions:**
- How can we support and pray for one another in times of need?
- In what ways can our prayers contribute to peace and harmony in our communities?
- How can we incorporate the themes discussed in our daily lives and prayers?

#### Conclusion
This Bible study provided a rich discussion on the importance of unity, faith, and reverence for the church as the temple of God. The group's engagement and contributions highlighted the relevance of these themes in today's world and encouraged members to reflect on their personal practices and attitudes within their church communities.

Hi, this is WB7MAX, Net Control for the West Coast Bible Study. We are in 1 Corinthians chapter 3, 1 Corinthians chapter 3, and we are looking today at verses 16 to 23. So we're going to finish up the chapter today, and we're going to talk about what is in this passage. And Paul is continuing to deal with the issue of divisions in the church. And He has been talking about the foolishness of focusing on ministers of the gospel as being the objects of our trust, and as the ones that we look to for our leadership instead of making Jesus the object of our trust, and the ones we are looking to for leadership. And so he continues that theme. He talks about the fact yesterday that the when we trust in men instead of trusting in the Lord. It's not a neutral thing. It's a thing that brings judgment and failure. So let's trust in the Lord, trust in the Lord alone, and not trust in anything or anyone else but the Lord. Great comment there, Jeff. Thank you for that. All right, other comments, please come down. There's a temple of God. The designing place of God is the Lord's Church. And the Holy Spirit resides in each of us. This is the creator of God's kingdom here. Right now that day is the Lord's Church. And what God's vision shows us. You know, I appreciate you pointing out that first phrase in verse 16, know you not. He's saying, you already know this stuff. Why have you forgotten it? And, you know, it reminds me, Kevin, of the passage there in Hebrews where it says we ought to give the more earnest things to the things that we have heard or more earnest attention to the things that we have heard. unless at any time we let them slip away. And so, I mean, my memory is a sieve. And I put something into it, and a few weeks later I've forgotten it, and I need to go back and be reminded of it. And, you know, that's one of the reasons why we read the Bible over and over and over again and why we study the same doctrines over and over and over again. And, you know, Peter says, In one of his epistles. You know, I know you already know this, but I'm stirring up your pure minds by way of remembrance. And so we have these constant statements in the scripture of the need to not forget and to revisit the things that we already know, to rebuild. that former understanding. And you know, in the midst of controversy, Kevin, it's really easy to forget some of the principles that we knew, because we get emotional, or we start focusing on the person or the argument. It's like, wait a second, let's stop here. Let's go back to our foundation. What does the Bible say about this? And reorient our thinking. So thanks, Kevin. Excellent point. Really appreciate that. All right, other comments, please come now. AK6OK again. serious question marks that always hang over my head. I remember when Billy Graham was being interviewed one time by the press, and somebody in the press asked, why do babies die? And Billy said, no, that's one of the questions I'm going to ask when I get to heaven, because I have no idea. Lots of mystery and not a ton of answers, but we have faith, Max. Yeah, you know, thank you for bringing that up, Jeff, because you're not the only one who struggles with that. 100% of Christians struggle with that. And, you know, the best answer I can give you is contained in Deuteronomy 29 in verse 29. In Deuteronomy 29, 29, it says, The secret things belong to the Lord our God. that the things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law. So while the knowledge we have is true knowledge, it's accurate knowledge, it's not exhaustive, and it's not comprehensive. God tells us explicitly, I've revealed some things to you. I've revealed enough things to you so that you can live as I want you to live. There are certain things you told them and certain things you didn't tell them because you knew either they couldn't understand it or it wouldn't be good for them to know that at this stage of their life. And that's the same way God deals with us. And, you know, somebody said something once that stuck with me to this very day. And what he said was this. He says, all I have seen. teaches me to trust the Creator for all that I have not seen. And so, you know, it's like we have seen a lot, and God has proven Himself to us so much and so many times, and especially in the gift of His Son, that He loves us that he has goodwill towards us and that his thoughts towards us are thoughts of peace and that nothing can separate us from his love. And yet there are a lot of things that we don't know, and that's okay. All that we have seen teaches us to trust the Creator for all we have not seen. I like Billy Graham's answers. You know, there's some stuff we don't know. It's okay, because we do know that even though God cannot be understood, God can be trusted. And that's all we need to know. Back to you there, Jeff. Very true, but one thing that just came up in my spirit when you were talking about this, I don't want it to be that way. That's the nature of man. I want to know, Max, what's up with that? Well, what's up with that, Jeff, is the same thing in the Garden of Eden, you know, where God said to Adam and Eve, don't eat the tree of the knowledge of God of good and evil. And Satan comes along and Satan says, oh, go ahead and eat, and you'll know a bunch more stuff that you're not supposed to know, namely the personal knowledge of good and evil. And so what we have to understand, Jeff, is that, yeah, we want to know, but... And sometimes that desire will lead us into things that it would be better off if we didn't know them. And so, you know, there are certain things that you didn't tell your little children because you knew they would be better off to not know about all the ugliness that is out there. You're shielding them from that because you love them. And so it's fine to have a desire to know stuff, but where God says, "I'm not telling you that," then we need to quiet ourselves. and behave ourselves before the Lord. It reminds me of a psalm. I think it's 122. Let me just turn to it for a second here. It, yeah, here it is, Psalm 131. Psalm 131 in verse 1 says, Lord, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eye lofty. Neither do I exercise myself in great matters or in matters too high for me. Surely I have behaved and quieted myself as a child that is weaned of his mother. My soul is even as a weaned child. Let Israel hope in the Lord from henceforth and forever. And so in Psalm 131, what we have here is, is the expression of a humble, submissive spirit that does not argue with the ways and the will of God. And so David is saying, look, I know there's some stuff that's above me. I'm just like a little child that's barely stopped nursing on his mother's breast. I'm just going to trust in the Lord and not demand out of God answers for things. that he's not willing to give me the answer to at this point in time. So don't fall into the temptation of the Garden of Eden where you want to know more than God wants to reveal. That's how the fall of the human race happens. Just embrace everything he has revealed and then trust him for the stuff he hasn't revealed. Over to you, Jeff. Okay, great answer. And for everybody listening, that was a hypothetical question I presented. I certainly know who the Lord is. I trust him implicitly. But, boy, that's a question that we all have to ask once in a while. Like, hey, wait a second. I want to know. Yeah, copy that. Hypotheticals are fine. You know, Paul asks all sorts of hypotheticals in the Bible. For example, in Romans chapter 6 and verse 1, he says, What, shall we sin then that grace may abound? Now, Paul didn't really believe that, but he's throwing out that hypothetical just like you did so that we can discuss the issue. So, Jeff, thank you. for positing those questions and expressing those conundrums, because it's good for us to talk about these things and to obtain some answers with reference to them, or at least some perspective, even if we don't have answers. All right, other comments, please come down to your call sign. WB7VZL. Roger, WB7VZL, go ahead. There are about three passages that have helped me with the pastor to restrain from asking too many "why" questions. And the three passages that come to mind: John 10:10, Christ's most succinct view of the "why" questions. He answers it by saying, "The thief comes to steal the Bible." kill and destroy. I have come to give life and that more abundantly. So Jesus, certainly with the temptations, knows we're involved with a universal controversy between good and evil. And of course, it's reflected by, unfortunately, the movies. But the real conflict is centered in Jesus and what He came to do to, in a sense, answer those wide questions. The other passage that I have taken great comfort is John 5:28 where He says that the day is coming. "Marvel not at this: don't be surprised that when the Son of Man comes, He will, every person who has gone to the grave will hear my voice. Whether it's the first or second resurrection, everyone who has died, including the babies, the hypothetical questions, will hear my voice. And the other wonderful parable that Jesus tells about, about the tares, about the tares in the field. And the disciples ask, well, what do we do? How, who did this? And Jesus says an enemy did this, kind of an image and a portrayal of what Jesus is putting up with in the universe. He's the sower, as Max, you pointed out. The Garden of Eden is a tremendous microcosm of what we've got going in the universe. Back to you, Max, WB7VZL. And we see that in Genesis 3.15 where God says, I will put enmity between the seed of the woman and the seed of the serpent. And the seed of the woman is going to crush the head of the serpent. But the serpent's doing a great deal of damage. He comes to kill and steal and destroy. And Jesus comes that we might have life and have it more abundantly. And so this... death and destruction and ruin, and Christ is coming to produce life and blessing and redemption. And as long as we understand that big picture, that explains the why to an awful lot of smaller things. So thanks for pointing out those passages. An enemy has done this. I like that. I think that's a good explanation for why there's evil in this world. It's because Satan brought it. Satan's responsible for it. And we, of course, bear our own responsibility. But the good news is there is hope, there is redemption, there is deliverance out of this present evil world and into the new heavens and the new earth wherein dwells righteousness. So there's deliverance out of all of this and that also answers a bunch of why questions. So thanks for that Roger, appreciate that. All right, other comments, please come now. Okay, I just got a text message from Mark, KJ7PVT. And Mark says, "Someone mentioned this morning that the idea of having a foundation. Our foundation and our rock is Jesus. I will liken him unto a wise man which built his house upon a rock. And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house, and it fell not, for it was founded upon a rock. And everyone that hears these sayings of mine and doeth them not shall be likened to a foolish man which built his house upon the sand. and the rains descended and the floods came and the winds blew and beat upon that house and it fell for great was the fall of it. And so that goes right along with our passage here in first Corinthians chapter three, where, you know, we are told to build our lives. on the rock of Jesus Christ. It says in chapter 3 and verse 11, For other foundation can no man lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus. So he's the rock upon which we build our life. And his wisdom is that which guides that life. And so that's what we're being told here in the passage that we're studying today, verse 18 and 19 and 20. Verse 18, let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seems to be wise in this world, let him become a fool that he may be wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. The wisdom of this world is like building your life on the sand, like Mark is talking about. For as written, he takes the wise in their own craftiness. That's a quotation from Job 5.13. And again, the Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, they are vain. Therefore let no man glory in men. So Mark, thank you for pointing out that if we build our lives on men and human wisdom, we're building our lives on the sand. If we build our lives on Jesus and His wisdom, then we're building our lives on the rock. Okay, other comments? Please come now. Is that XN? Is that XN? Kevin, please go ahead. Yeah, very good. Good discussion. And initially just reflecting on the question Keith had of why. I think God always answers the why questions, it seems, with just, you know, have faith. Trust me, whether Habakkuk 2 or Romans 1, we're reminded the theme is that just shall live by faith. But in the context of this verse here, for this text here that we're looking at. And, you know, Paul, and I appreciate Mark mentioning that because this is what this text is, the foundation of this text is focused on, is we're building our life upon the Lord, His church, Matthew 16, 18, Isaiah 28, 16, and other areas of text. You know, the church is not a building, as I'm sure we all know. It is the assembly of baptized believers gathered together in a covenant relationship with our Lord here. And that holiness, the care, we do not take it lightly, and we need to not defile that. You know, in the Old Testament, they used to go through a process of purification before they go into the temple where the Lord resided. Well, we know the Lord resides, as He promises us, two or three are gathered in my name, in my authority. There I shall be also. And so we should take that with the same approach, that with the same reverence. And when we walk into, you know, a church or assemble together with others, we should be mindful of that, that this is a holy assembly. And that we should seek to have that unity, not to file that assembly together with personal... divisions or conflicts or what have you. But humble ourselves before God and recognize that we are only here by the grace of God. KB7, Zedek Sin. You know, Kevin, you bring out a really important point that's in our passage, and I'm really thankful for that. We kind of wandered away from the passage a little bit, but you're bringing us back. Thank you for that. You know, in verses 16 and 17, um, It says, Now what's important for us to understand is that in the Greek here, the word you is in the plural. And so he's talking about the collective church of the local church there at Corinth. Now we individually are temples of the Holy Spirit and that the Holy Spirit dwells in us individually. But when the church body gathers collectively, it forms a temple. And what he's saying here is that, you know, under the Old Testament, if somebody went and defiled the physical temple like Solomon's temple, man, they were put to death, right? You just didn't go in there and, you know, start having a party or something. And in the same way, the New Covenant Temple, which is the local church, when it's gathered together for its stated meetings, is a temple of the Holy Spirit. And so we are not to defile our local church meetings, with bad behavior, with bad teaching, with bad attitudes. And so he's warning us here that when they're having these squabbles, well, I'm of Paul, and I'm of Apollos, and I'm of Peter, and there's all this self-dealing, self-serving, divisive behavior, that's how the local church is defiled. That's how you get church splits. That's how you get people turning against people instead of people loving each other. If someone does that to Christ's church, Christ says, I'm going to bring judgment upon him. Verse 17 is very sobering. If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy. For the temple of God is holy, which temple ye, plural, are. And so Kevin brings out a really important point here, and that is we need to treat the local church with as much reverence as they treated the Old Testament temple. Because Jesus says where two or three are gathered together, there am I in the midst. When two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst. And so Christ is in our church, and it's his temple, and his presence is there, just like the presence of God was in the Holy of Holies. then we need to approach church with reverence and not with frivolity, not with silliness. It's a serious thing to be in the presence of Jesus Christ in his temple as priest, offering him spiritual sacrifices. This is not a game. And so we take our local churches very seriously, and we take the worship that goes on there very seriously. We take the teaching that goes on there very seriously, because this is at the very core of what it means to be a New Covenant Christian functioning in the New Covenant Temple. All right, well, I've rambled on for a while here. Any other comments? Please come down. Thank you, Max, WB7VZL, for reminding us about the plural, the collective plural, and the U. Over. Yeah, you bet. And so we're individually temples of the spirit, but we're also collectively temples of the spirit. So, Roger, thank you for that. All right, other comments, please come down. Okay, I have a comment here from McKeith WB7RKR. He says, "I must have misunderstood. I thought the way it was explaining was the temple was our bodies, and that we take care of God's temple because He dwells within each of our bodies, and therefore we don't defile it with drugs and smoking and bad food and all those things. Keith, you are exactly correct. That is one aspect of the doctrine of the temple of God. on earth under the new covenant. You're exactly correct, Keith. Our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit, but the local church is also a temple of God. It is also a habitation of the Holy Spirit and of Jesus Christ. But, you know, it's hard to witness those things when you see them publicly just teaching and preaching pure blasphemy and defiling the Lord's church. And I think one of the things that bothers me is it confuses people and turns people away from Christianity. They think, well, if this is Christianity, if that's what Christianity is, I want no part of it because... That guy's just a charlatan, you know. But the truth is, if we are faithful and we give the reverence and the respect to God's assembly in church as we should, and the love that our Lord commands us to have for one another, that's what the people will recognize. That's what will draw people to hear the gospel. That's what will open their heart. is, you know, they will know you by the love that you have amongst yourselves. And that comes from a position of reverence for God's assembly and holy people he brought together. Just briefly, I'll share. Thank you. My wife and I are talking the other day. I said, you know, I love the Lord's church in one aspect, too, because he brings together the most unlikely group of people, always, as we see in the first century church here, as we see in our churches today. You know, if you were to... get a group of people together, a club or an organization, you probably wouldn't pick the people that are in church at first until you are saved in it. But God puts us all together in what a glorious way. And we have wonderful fellowship and worship of God together. But, you know, from the world's perspective, quite an unlikely cast of characters. KB7 is that example. Yeah, Kevin, well said. You know, most of you on this net are married and most of you are men and most of you have a wife. How protective are you of your wife? You love your wife, and if someone comes along and starts to assault your wife, man, you're going to stand up on your high legs, and you're going to destroy that person. Well, the church is the bride of Christ. And for someone to come and defile Christ's bride is to incur the wrath of the husband. And Jesus is furious. when people defile his bride, his church. And so these false teachers you're talking about, Kevin, have a severe judgment. It says in James 3.1, And so it's a fearful thing to be a pastor and to be ministering to the bride of Christ and to take care of her in such a way. that Christ will be pleased with how we protected and provided for His bride, rather than being furious for the way that we defiled and corrupted His bride. So it's an awesome thing to be in that position of having an influence and impact on the Church, and every one of us do, to a greater degree or a lesser degree, right? So as you go to church, realize, "This is the bride of Christ, and I need to protect her and I need to bless her. in the same way I would if her husband were standing right next to her. So that's an important concept. And yet, what an unlikely group of people Christ welds together into the body of Christ. Jews and Gentiles, abundant, free, male and female, old and young, black and white. It doesn't matter. We're all one in Christ. Mark, KJ7PVT brought to our mind this passage in Matthew 1820, where two or three are gathered together in his name. There is he in the midst. So Mark, thanks for that passage. And we've alluded to that previously in our discussion of why the local church is a temple. All right, we are out of time. We're going to stop right here today. Great discussion. Thank you all for your contributions. And I think that we understand the passage better now than we did when we started, which is a whole idea. So let's love the Bride. Let's protect the Bride. Let's minister to the Bride. Let's reverence the temple, respect the temple, conduct ourselves as priests within that temple to offer spiritual sacrifices to God and recognize the church belongs to Jesus, and therefore we need to treat it in light of that. All right. Any final prayer requests before Scott in 7NPA leads us in prayer? Please come with your prayer requests. OK. I've heard a voice there. Any relay? Yeah, Carol's in there. Carol, go ahead. Yeah. OK, Carol, unable to copy Scott. Could you copy that? I'm trying to put it together. Turn up. We're we're going to lift up. Chris this morning, is that who you're referring to? KL5 Sugar Charlie. And he was going through an angioplasty, is that right? Is this dovetailing into today's request there, Carol? Over. Okay, got it, Carol. Got it. Thank you. Appreciate you so much, sir, Carol. 7 MPA, back to you, Max. Yeah, Scott, in 7 MPA, go ahead and lead us in prayer. And, Carol, if you could text message me that, I'll put it on the list, please. Go ahead there, Scott, in 7 MPA, lead us in prayer. All right. Let's go to Lord in prayer. Father in heaven, as we gather around as a band of believers, saints, brothers and sisters, we come to you, as Will pointed out this morning in the opening prayer, we come to you to glorify you and to honor you.
