### Bible Study Summary: 1 Corinthians 1:1-9

#### Introduction

This Bible study focuses on 1 Corinthians, a letter written by the Apostle Paul to the church in Corinth. The Corinthian church faced numerous challenges, including divisions, immorality, and doctrinal misunderstandings. In 1 Corinthians 1:1-9, Paul sets the tone for his letter by addressing the church and expressing his gratitude for their faith and calling them to remember their foundation in Christ.

#### Detailed Summary

**Verses 1-3: Paul's Greeting**
Paul begins his letter with a formal greeting to the church of God in Corinth. He identifies himself as an apostle called by the will of God, emphasizing his authority and the divine origin of his message. He also acknowledges Sosthenes, who may have been his co-worker or amanuensis. The greeting is a standard practice in ancient letters, serving to establish the writer's identity and authority.

**Verses 4-9: Gratitude and Acknowledgment**
In verses 4-9, Paul expresses his gratitude to God for the faith of the Corinthians and their fellowship with Christ. He acknowledges God's faithfulness in calling them into this fellowship and promises that God will continue to sustain them. This section highlights the importance of God's grace and the assurance of salvation for believers.

#### Themes

1. **Foundation in Christ**: The key verse, 1 Corinthians 3:11, underscores the importance of building the church on the foundation of Christ. This theme is central to understanding the need for unity and adherence to Christ's teachings within the church.

2. **Divine Calling**: Paul's acknowledgment of God's faithfulness in calling the Corinthians into fellowship with Christ emphasizes the divine nature of salvation. It highlights the idea that salvation is not a human achievement but a divine calling and gift.

3. **Gratitude and Fellowship**: Paul's expression of gratitude and his recognition of the Corinthians' faith and fellowship with Christ underscore the importance of community and mutual support among believers.

#### Discussion Questions

1. **Foundation in Christ**: How does the idea of building the church on the foundation of Christ impact our understanding of unity and doctrinal consistency within the church? How can we ensure that our practices and teachings are grounded in Christ's teachings and example?

2. **Divine Calling**: What does it mean to understand salvation as a divine calling rather than a human achievement? How does this perspective affect our approach to evangelism and our understanding of the role of the Holy Spirit in salvation?

3. **Gratitude and Fellowship**: How can we cultivate a spirit of gratitude and mutual support within our church communities? What practical steps can we take to strengthen our fellowship and ensure that we are supporting one another in our faith journeys?

4. **Behavior of Saved Individuals**: How do we reconcile the idea that saved individuals can still behave badly with the need for patience and understanding? What role does the Holy Spirit play in the lives of believers, and how can we support one another in our spiritual growth?

5. **Impact of Environment**: How does the environment and teaching around us influence our acceptance of the Lord? What are some practical ways we can ensure that our surroundings and influences are conducive to spiritual growth and understanding?

6. **Prayer and Support**: How can we better support one another in prayer, especially in times of need such as health concerns or personal challenges? What are some ways we can pray for our community and the wider world, as exemplified by Jerry's prayer?

This study highlights the foundational importance of Christ in our lives and the church, the divine nature of our salvation, and the importance of community and mutual support. As we reflect on these themes, let us seek to deepen our understanding of Christ's teachings and the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

All right, there is George, K2KJX. Good morning, George. How you doing? Doing well. We had 10 degrees this morning, so it's a little chilly. But I have a quick -- I dropped a pastor in South Carolina. They're pretty open to -- And this is a public school. It's pretty open to having a guest devotional in the elementary school. And I'll be real quick, but a mom died. And his statement at the devotional was, "Healing comes when we go to heaven." And that's, his, thought process through the devotional was about healing. And the mom died, and the dad was afraid to tell a kindergartner and a second grader that their mom had died, and he finally told them, and then I guess he was there, but... He said that mom's in heaven now, and I believe that the healing part was when they go to heaven for all the pain and suffering. I don't know what her issue was, but anyway. Not to get too deep into it, but other than that, that was the first. He just called me, and I thought I couldn't check in. But anyway, he was telling me about the principal called him, and he was nervous about what he said. But anyway, that's all I have, K2KJX. All right, George, real good. Thanks for that report. George, K2KJX, his son is a pastor. There was a woman who died who had a child in school. I think the child is in kindergarten or first grade, young child. And he was allowed to speak at the service there. And he said that the mom, a healing takes place in heaven and that the mom is blessed. now healed and the little kindergartner boy was taking comfort in that and the principal was giving him a hard time about talking about religion in school. So anyway, that's George's comment as best I was able to understand it through the static. And so we need to pray for that little boy that lost his mom and we need to pray that the gospel will penetrate into that school. Does that pretty well reflect it there, George? Come back to me. Oh, Roger, yeah, it was two children, a kindergartner and a second-grade And the, actually the principal called him and was kind of in tears about the situation with mom dying. And she was happy that he, that my son talked about healing in heaven. And so he was nervous when she called him, the principal, but realized that it was a joyous thing that he was able to communicate to the school, and this is a public elementary school, communicate to the school that mom's in heaven and she's healed. All right, real good. So the school was in support of that. All right, good. Thank you Appreciate the fact that the principal had a positive attitude towards that. All right, let's pray for that kindergartner and that second grader that lost their mom, that they will derive comfort from the Gospel and the fact that their mom is in Heaven, and that they will see her again. And we really need the Gospel in these public schools. You know, when you look at the suicide rate of young people that's skyrocketing, the reason for that is because there's no hope. And the Gospel provides hope, and kids need hope. They need a hope and a future, something to look forward to, something to live for, something to comfort them in their griefs, and only the Gospel can supply that. I was talking with a guy the other day, and I said to him, you know, his son had died, and so I was trying to talk to him, and he said, "I don't believe the Bible, and I don't believe in life after death and all of that." in the face of the death of your son. And he was silent. He had no comfort. And so it was a sad, sad situation. In any event, George, thank you for that. All right, are there any other check-ins to the West Coast Apocalypse Study? Please come down. All right, the net would like to acknowledge Gene K7GWR. Good morning, Gene. Good to see you there on the Utah SDR. Alright, I am just running quickly through my SDRs here to see if there's anybody I missed. I think I've got everyone on Utah, and let's see what Half Moon Bay looks like. Yeah, Phillip, yeah. Let's see. We've got Roger W6RLJ. Good morning, Roger, to you. Roger, are you on the radio? All right, and there's Joe, KD7WBV. Joe, I love it when you show up. You're an old friend of mine. I haven't heard your voice in forever, but I love to see your call signs. That's Joe, KD7WBV, up there in the state of Washington. Battleground, Washington. That's where he is. Ha! I always remember that, Joe, because Christian life's a battleground, isn't it? We're engaged in spiritual warfare. So that's Joe, KD7WBV, an old friend. All right. from way back on the West Coast Bible Study. All right, we are going to get started with our Bible study. And we are starting today in 1 Corinthians. We finished Romans, a wonderful book, probably the most important book in the Bible in terms of setting forth So the key verse to this book, really, is 1 Corinthians 3.11. In 1 Corinthians 3.11, it says, For other foundation can no man lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. And so these folks were trying to build the church together. Let's build our church on His teaching, His example, His character, and let's have a Christ-centered church instead of a people, faction, and issue-centered church. So that is a brief introduction to the book of 1 Corinthians. This is WB7MAX, Net Control for the West Coast Bible Study, and we are going to open our session today by reading... verses 1 through 9 of chapter 1, but before we do, we want to open our time together in prayer. So I'm going to ask someone to open a prayer for us who is well acquainted with church and church problems, since he is a pastor, and that's David KK7 PDI. David, could you please open in prayer for us? regarding us launching into this new book of 1 Corinthians. Go ahead there, David. Okay, Max, again, I'll make the opening prayer. Would you please bow your heads as we approach the throne of grace? Heavenly Father, as we bow our heads this morning and... Considering the church in Corinth that Paul addresses and the issues that are in the church that face every congregation today, they are relevant and that we can learn from the New Testament church there in Corinth that Paul established. The Corinthians and all that they face that we might consider first, which you say is starting off this chapter, that it is the church of God, that it belongs to you, it is your church, and we need to give that designation and that understanding. that you are the head through Jesus Christ. He's the head of the church, and we're members of the body. And I pray, Father, that as we study this book, that we will always remember to put you in your proper role as God Almighty and your son as King of King and Lord of Lords. Amen. Real good there, David. Thank you for that prayer. Much appreciated. All right. Well, I know that many of you in the past have gone to churches, and you've had problems in the church. And you think, well, what's going on here? And the answer is the same thing that has been going on for 2,000 years. The church is made up of sinners. And because the church is made up of sinners, and everybody's growing, and there's immatorities and ignorances, by these conflicts. Well, let's do our first reading here this morning. We're going to read verses 1 through 9, and what we have here is Paul's greeting, and we have Paul's gratitude. His greeting in verses 1 to 3, his gratitude in verses 4 through 9. And so, Scott, in 7 NTA, if you could please read for us 1 Corinthians 1, verses 1 through 9. All righty, Max, and I'll be reading out the New American Standard version this morning. And good morning to everyone. 1 Corinthians 1, verse 1. Then Paul called as an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, to the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus. Now God is faithful through whom you were called into the fellowship with his son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. And that brings us up to verse 10, Max in 70. Yeah. All right. Real good. Scott, before we comment on the reading, then that would like to acknowledge Joe K F seven, a U O Q. Uh, Joe has been in correspondence with me. Um, via email, and this is his first check-in. So, Joe, thank you for being here. KF7 UOQ in Ridgefield, Washington. Sorry, I got your name wrong in the initial check-in. A lot of stuff floating around in my head, and sometimes I don't keep track of it too good. All right, Scott, thank you for the reading. All right, any comments on this section, please come down to your call sign. Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved. Come to faith in Christ. But then there's the internal call of the Spirit, which is provided to God's elect, to those who are predestinated to be saved. And that inward call is what is being spoken of here. And you'll notice, Jeff, in verse 9, it also says, God is faithful by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ. And so twice in this section, he says they were called, in verse 2, to be saints, that is, to be those who are saved, sanctified. Every saved person is a saint. They're sanctified and separated from the world. And when they are called, they are called into fellowship with Jesus Christ. That is, they have union with him. So, Jeff, accurate observation and a good point. Thanks for bringing that up. So that's the confidence we have. When we go scatter the seed, there is some good ground out there. And that good ground is the ground that God has chosen and plowed up and prepared to receive the gospel. So we indiscriminately... cast the gospel seed out there, and we're looking for those in whose heart God is working who will receive the message. The rest will not, but those shall. All right, Jeff, great comment. Thank you. Other comments, please come now. Zedek Sin, go ahead. Yeah, KB7, Zedek Sin, several points here, but I'll just start with as believers, but we've certainly seen that in our lives too sometimes. And those around us that are saved, just not living as such, TV7, that exact. Yeah, Kevin, you make an excellent point there, and that is that saved people can behave pretty badly at times. And he even calls them carnal at one point in time. And of course, we know carnal people are unsaved people. He's saying, in this area, you're acting like unsaved folks. Stop it. And, of course, that had to do with their party spirit, I'm of Paul, I'm of Apollos, and all that nonsense. And, yeah, you know, and so when we look at folks in our church assembly, you know, some people can be genuinely born again, genuinely saved, genuinely justified, but their sanctification has some serious holes in it and some serious weaknesses. And so we have to love these folks. We have to work with them patiently. We have to help them move forward, you know. But as long as they're professing faith in Jesus and trusting in Him alone for their salvation, we assume in the judgment of charity that they're saved folks and that they just need to grow. And so, Kevin, I appreciate you pointing out the fact that, you know, we need to be patient with our brethren and not assume because somebody isn't squared away all the way around in every area of their life that they're not saved. So, good point, Kevin. All right, other comments. Come now. AK6, okay. AK6, okay. Jeff, go ahead. To take this a little bit further, as you read down your right in 9, God is faithful through whom you were called into fellowship. You're right. Max, we're all called. However, not everybody answers. And as we all know, everybody knows who God is. Every person on the planet knows that there is a higher power, obviously. But not everybody decides to go that direction, Dover. Yeah, well said. And you're exactly right. Everybody's called, but not everybody answers the call. And the call that... is being spoken of here is that inward call where God is speaking in the heart and not just on the ear. And both of those have to happen. We have to hear the call on the ear, and then God has to work in our hearts. And when He does, then we respond to that outward call because the Spirit's working and we come into fellowship with Jesus. So you're right. Both of those things have to happen. If the outward call comes and there's no moving of the heart, there is no salvation. And so we're depending on the Spirit to convict of sin and of righteousness and of judgment to come. We're depending on the Spirit to open the eyes so that we might see the truth of the Word of God. And we're depending on the Spirit to regenerate the heart and to impart the gifts of repentance and faith. And when all that happens, then there is that positive response. Back to you there, Jeff. Go ahead. That's correct. And I look at all that's going on in the world right now, and a lot of this has to do with what you're taught. And we were talking this morning about that for our concern. We talked to her about that before they ever got married, and she decided to go a different direction. And at this point, she's sorry she did that. So anyway, it's really interesting who accepts the Lord and who doesn't and how they're impacted by people around them and not necessarily making that decision on their own. Over. And I started talking to him about what the Bible says about honoring your mother and father. And their behavior, they're both believers, but their behavior has caused him to kind of go sideways a bit. And he was dishonoring his parents. And I finally pulled him aside and said, look, you need to honor your parents because it's biblical. It's a commandment, right? Honor your mother and father so that all will go well with you. You're way out of line here. You need to love your parents. You need to communicate with them. And you need to honor them because that's what the Bible requires of every child. There's a reason the fifth commandment is there. And the reason why it's there is because children are so prone to rebellion and defiance and self-will and selfishness and self-importance. Yeah, as you point out, we'll read about him in Acts 18 too, as the second leader of the synagogue that was saved and became part of the church at Corinth and also persecuted for defame. He introduces himself as an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God. He's got people with him who are helping him in the work of ministry. And this man has been called and commissioned by Jesus Christ very explicitly to bear witness to his word and his will. And so the idea here, as Beck is pointing out, is that we have not only been given salvation, we've been given spiritual gifts, we've been given a knowledge and an understanding of the scriptures, and we've been given skill and ability in ministries. in glorification. All right, other comments? Please come now. WB-7BZO. WB-7BZO, roger, go ahead. I really have appreciated in the last few minutes the underlining of Sosthenes that Kevin highlighted. And I did go back to the chapter he recommended, Acts 18, which is in my margin. Marginal reference is verse 17. Sosthenes... Amen. Well said. And yeah, we see softening is mentioned in Acts 18, 17. And he was converted during Paul's ministry in Corinth. And now he's a companion with Paul in his journey here five years later. He's persevering in the faith. And I'm so glad you were able to visit Corinth and stand in this place. in that day. And so, while you're in this battle of sanctification, we're going to see a lot of ugliness here as we go through this book. Nevertheless, because of the saving work of Jesus, all of their sins are forgiven, cleansed, and covered, and they will be presented as blameless and faultless before His throne with exceeding joy. So, Alright Jerry, 887ER, please go ahead and lead us in prayer. Let us pray. Our Father in heaven, we come and pray to you with our faith and honor for you being our God.
